2021 UI PHYSICIANS CLINICAL AWARDS The University of Iowa Physicians (UIP) Clinical Awards were established in 2011 to honor clinical excellence among members of UI Physicians.

Nominations are accepted annually from any UIP member or participant and evaluated by the UIP Clinical Awards Selection Committee. Names of the top two candidates in each category are forwarded to the UIP Executive Committee for secret-ballot vote.

CLINICIAN OF THE YEAR Awarded to the clinician that most embodies those aspects of a truly great patient service provider, including technical skill, humanism to patients and families, collaboration with colleagues and advocacy.

INNOVATIONS IN CLINICAL CARE Given to an individual and/or team for implementation of an innovative new program or process which improves service to patients.

PATIENT SATISFACTION AND SERVICE EXCELLENCE Given to an individual or team in recognition of outstanding patient satisfaction. Metrics can include Press Ganey Total Score, most improved score and/or other patient feedback.

EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY Awarded to an individual and/or team in recognition of outstanding quality of care provided to patients.

Recipients will have demonstrated excellence in reportable measures of quality, benchmarked patient outcomes, or improvements in internally measured outcomes.

EXCELLENCE IN OUR WORKPLACE Given to a medical director, whose leadership and innovation demonstrably improves the “practice life” and satisfaction of providers in the delivery of clinical care.

BEST CONSULTING PROVIDER Awarded to an individual in recognition of his or her outstanding consulting or specialized services to the inpatient and ambulatory patients of UI Health Care.

Jonathan Klein, MD

Dr. Klein has dedicated thirty years to the mission of the University of Iowa and has acted as the medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the University of Iowa for 15 years. His passion for clinical excellence and optimization of the delivery of quality healthcare is unparalleled. He has dedicated his life to building an exceptional clinical program which prioritizes quality, clinical excellence and innovation. Under his leadership, our NICU is recognized as a world leader in the care of extremely premature infants with survival rates at the limits of viability (22 weeks gestation) that are tenfold higher than the national average.

The Pediatric Comprehensive Pain Clinic at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is one of the very few pediatric pain clinics around the country following a true multidisciplinary design that includes an interventional pain physician (Dr. Walia), a physiotherapist and a child psychologist (Dr. Krista Kohl), and an integrative medicine specialist, all managing the pediatric chronic pain patient in a collaborative multifaceted manner. It is one of very few pediatric pain clinics offering interventional/procedural options for the management of chronic pain in children, with a goal to improving their lifestyle and functioning. In addition to providing state of the art pediatric pain treatment services, the Clinic opens avenues for cross departmental collaboration, education and research, where providers and students from every discipline can learn from the other.

PATIENT SATISFACTION AND SERVICE EXCELLENCE AWARD Andrew Bryant, MD / Home Treatment Team Internal Medicine

Andrew Bryant, MD

Dr. Bryant led a group of hospitalist physicians and advanced practice providers in the quick development of a Home Treatment team for patients with COVID-19 at high risk of severe disease. Algorithms, treatment plans and care scalation protocols were implemented in record time and improved continually through the pandemic.

He developed relationships and collaborations with the ILI Clinic and worked on monitoring the outcomes of this program. The outcomes of COVID-19 patients followed by the home treatment team were dramatically better than the national and regional averages, despite being high risk patients.

The work of Dr. Nepple and Dr. Berkowitz has improved the identification and management of malnutrition at UIHC and nationally. Their work has demonstrated a substantial benefit for patients, providers, and institution. For hospital inpatients, identification of medical comorbidities is an important measure of severity of illness and impacts both hospital reimbursement and risk adjustment for quality measures.

Dr. Nepple and team initially used Vizient data to confirm that malnutrition (MN) was being under-diagnosed at academic medical centers. As a result, the UIHC MN identification workflow was re-designed to leverage informatics for better documentation. Dr. Berkowitz subsequently developed a multidisciplinary Advanced Nutrition inpatient consult service to help manage patients with malnutrition to directly improve patient outcomes.

“…As malnutrition is a qualifying diagnosis in the MS-DRG system, the diagnosis and documentation of malnutrition as an additional condition improved the major complications and comorbidities and/or complications or comorbidities capture rate…”

EXCELLENCE IN OUR WORKPLACE AWARD Kevin Doerschug, MD Internal Medicine

Kevin Doerschug, MD

In his role as Medical Director of the MICU, Dr. Doerschug showed outstanding leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. His actions represent the essence of what the “Excellence in our Workplace” award should acknowledge. While the pandemic response stressed many aspects of UI Health Care, these challenges reached their apex in the MICU. For more than a year, Dr. Doerschug stayed attuned to the working of the unit, but also to the well-being of the staff. He was keenly aware of the anxiety among caregivers; the tensions of working masked and shielded; the pressures related to sickness and cross-coverage; the trauma of caring for ill colleagues and family members; and the grief of dealing with preventable death. Kevin’s impact was felt by the nursing staff, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, physician trainees, and his faculty colleagues.

BEST CONSULTING PROVIDER AWARD Dilek Ince, MD Internal Medicine

Dilek Ince, MD

Dr. Ince is very thorough and has expansive knowledge related to infectious diseases, particularly with immunocompromised patients. She is prompt and collegial. Many are comforted knowing she is on-board with extremely ill patients. In addition to her expertise, she contributed extensively during the COVID pandemic.
