On behalf of the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care at University of Iowa Health Care, I am proud to present the 2024 annual report. This year’s theme, Growing into a System: Past, Present, and Future, highlights the ongoing evolution that has been vital to UI Health Care’s growth and success.
The department’s rich history is rooted in a commitment to providing the highest standards of evidence-based care. UI Health Care began its journey in medical services in 1873, partnering with the Sisters of Mercy to establish a small, 20bed hospital in downtown Iowa City. By 1898, a state-of-the-art 65-bed facility replaced the original hospital, and in 1928, a new hospital—the largest of its kind at the time—was built, forming the foundation of today’s UI Health Care.
As UI Health Care’s capabilities expanded, nursing played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s trajectory. In 2004, UI Hospitals & Clinics, now UI Health Care, became the first hospital in Iowa to earn designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program®, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to nursing excellence and patient care. Since then, UI Health Care has been redesignated four times in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.
In parallel, key programs such as the adult, neonatal, and pediatric continuity of care and care coordination programs were launched to provide seamless support for patients and their families. These initiatives trained teams to address personal and systemic barriers, ensuring comprehensive care for those they served. Additionally, 100 years of social service excellence was celebrated in 2021, highlighting the pivotal role of adult and pediatric social workers in transforming patient outcomes.
UI Health Care has been a pioneer in other specialized services. The installation of the state’s only multiplace hyperbaric chamber in 1995 enabled advanced emergency care, and dual-chamber operations began as early as 1988. The hyperbaric chamber, managed by the dedicated Department of Respiratory Care team, provides a pressurized environment to deliver oxygen therapy for treating conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness, ensuring advanced emergency care.
The Department of Rehabilitation Therapies has delivered expert care for critical and complex cases for decades, supported by occupational therapy, physical therapy, music therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation specialists. The goal of team members throughout the department has always been ensuring patients experience an optimal quality of life by maximizing their functional abilities.
Landmark developments in facilities further enhanced patient care. The UI Health Care Iowa River Landing outpatient facility opened in 2012, followed by the 2017 debut of UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital. This report reflects the tireless efforts of all team members—nurses, social workers, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and countless others—who ensure the care UI Health Care provides is accessible, connected, and compassionate.

I invite you to explore these pages and celebrate the accomplishments that have made UI Health Care a comprehensive, integrated health system. As we honor the past, we remain steadfast in UI Health Care’s mission to deliver exceptional

The Present
The transition of Mercy Iowa City to UI Health Care in January 2024 marked a significant step in growing into a system delivering comprehensive care to meet the needs of the Iowa City community. The acquisition strengthens UI Health Care’s ability to provide safe, high-quality health services while ensuring continued access for patients. The location is now known as UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown.
Employees at this location have been essential in this process with leaders across the organization supporting and driving integration. A spirit of collaboration has been key in aligning practices and workflows across campuses in order to foster seamless patient care experiences. The rapid implementation of a new electronic health record, which connects patient information across UI Health Care locations, has further enhanced unification of the growing system. Team members at the downtown campus are ensuring that the quality of care reflects the high standards synonymous with UI Health Care by fostering collaboration, aligning practices across campuses, and maintaining a patient-centered approach.

December
Mission Cancer + Blood officially becomes part of UI Health Care
As UI Health Care continues to grow into a system, further expansion in the Quad Cities demonstrates a steadfast commitment to providing accessible, high-quality care. The opening of urgent care clinics in Davenport and Bettendorf allows patients to access same-day care.
In addition, a new AirCare base opened in Davenport on Nov. 20, 2024, further enhancing access to life-saving critical care services. As the fourth AirCare base in the system—joining locations in Dubuque, Iowa City, and Waterloo—this expansion reflects UI Health Care’s dedication to meeting the emergency medical needs of the region.
On Dec. 31, 2024, Mission Cancer + Blood officially became part of UI Health Care, marking a critical turning point in the fight against cancer in Iowa. Adding Mission’s 20+ cancer clinics across central Iowa to UI Health Care’s system will establish a statewide network, addressing Iowa’s high cancer rates and bringing top-quality care closer to home for all Iowans.
Behavioral health care remains a pressing need for the Iowa City community and Iowa, and UI Health Care has responded to address this demand. The adult Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) relocated to a newly upgraded space, improving the environment for patients and care teams alike. Alongside this, the opening of the adolescent CSU provided a much-needed resource to support young patients experiencing acute behavioral health challenges. These units provide short-term, intensive care designed to stabilize individuals in crisis and support their transition to ongoing care.

The Future
As part of UI Health Care’s ongoing growth as a system, UI Health Care Medical Center North Liberty represents a key development in continuing to provide comprehensive, accessible care for Iowans. Set to open on April 28, 2025, this state-of-the-art facility will offer services including orthopedics, rehabilitation, and emergency care, all within a seamless, patient-centered environment.
From preoperative care to postoperative rehabilitation, team members will be at the forefront, facilitating coordinated and compassionate care. The design of the facility will promote system-wide collaboration, enabling team members to deliver timely, efficient care that aligns with UI Health Care’s high standards. By improving access to routine and specialized services, the North Liberty campus creates additional capacity, furthering UI Health Care’s mission to meet the growing health needs of Iowans while maintaining excellence across all locations.
UI Health Care is also enhancing its university campus capabilities to address the evolving needs of patients. Plans to expand the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) will enable advanced care for Iowa’s smallest and most vulnerable patients. Additionally, renovations to the Burn Treatment Center will create an upgraded environment designed to deliver care for more adult and pediatric patients on both the inpatient unit and in the clinic.

UI Health Care continues to grow with a commitment to serving all Iowans and providing world-class care closer to home.
As we look to the future, the theme of Growing into a System: Past, Present, and Future will continue to guide not only UI Health Care but the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care. Over the past year, we have seen remarkable growth across campuses and services with the department at the front and center of every development. The ability to provide seamless, coordinated care depends on the strength of the UI Health Care system, and team members from the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care are critical to the system functioning efficiently.
As we move forward, the three key priorities of people, patients, and community will remain at the forefront in shaping the future of evidence-based care delivery for the people of Iowa and beyond. Together, as a unified system, we will continue to elevate excellence by providing the

CNOR® STRONG
UI Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital Operating Room Team
Nurses from the Stead Family Children’s Hospital operating room team received recognition for earning the certified perioperative nurse (CNOR®) certification. The CNOR® Strong designation, awarded by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), is given to hospitals and health systems with greater than 50% of its operating room nursing staff CNOR®-certified.
The CNOR® Strong designation, which is conferred for one year, represents a commitment to excellence in perioperative nursing and outstanding patient care. Research suggests that nurses who earn the CNOR® certification have greater confidence in their clinical practice, having validated their specialized knowledge in perioperative nursing, according to CCI. Certification is a key factor in the assurance of standards of knowledge, skills, and abilities in nursing specialty practice or to a specific role that contributes to better patient outcomes.
