› JANET P. ENGLE The UIC Department of Pharmacy Practice completed another productive and successful year. During 2016, the department completed all of the objectives and action plans outlined in the 2011-2016 strategic plan. Concurrently, the department embarked on a new strategic planning process that took most of the year. The planning process culminated with the approval of a new department strategic plan for 2017-2022. A new mission and vision for the department was developed. Currently, action plans are being developed to operationalize the new strategic plan and move the department forward. A preview of the department’s new strategic goals and directions include: • reevaluating all residency and fellowship programs; • expanding research programs with a focus on translational research; • continuing to refine and update departmental mentoring and faculty development program; • maintain efforts to diversify funding streams to the department via entrepreneurial projects, ambulatory pharmacies, and clinical services; • and continue fundraising efforts.

During 2016, efforts continued to engage and promote the department, faculty, and the department’s many activities via social media. The Department of Pharmacy Practice continues its presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube. Follow along at: Facebook

The Department of Pharmacy Practice continues to grow and mature. In 2016, the department recruited for several faculty positions in both Chicago and Rockford.

Clinical faculty were hired in the specialty areas of solid organ transplant, drug information, and ambulatory care including antithrombosis, general medicine, family medicine, and women’s health clinics. The department also added two new researchers to department tenure track faculty. Recruiting continues for three additional tenure track positions. In 2016, Jeremy Johnson was promoted to associate professor with tenure and Melissa Badowski, clinical pharmacist in HIV and telemedicine, was promoted to clinical associate professor. All promoted clinical faculty now receive multi-year contracts dependent upon rank.

The residency and fellowship program had another strong year. Four new residency positions were added in 2016: PGY2 Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration, PGY2 Ambulatory Care (third position), PGY3 in HIV, and PGY1 Community with emphasis in Specialty Pharmacy. The Resident Teaching Certificate Program was offered to all residents at UIC as well as approximately 51 other residents in the Chicago area. Supplementing the residents’ noon report was a leadership curriculum conducted by Department Head Jan Engle and topics related to pharmacy administration as well as University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System (UI Health) provided by Director of Pharmacy Andy Donnelly. The Residency Advisory Committee met on a regular basis and oversaw the operations of the residency program. In addition, the department hosts an annual residency retreat to discuss and further improve the department’s program.

The Department Advisory Committee, an elected committee consisting of faculty and administration, met on a monthly basis during 2016. The Advisory Committee worked with the Ad-hoc Promotion and Tenure Committee to review and update departmental promotion and tenure guidelines as well as the promotion norms for tenure and clinical track faculty.

The committee approved new guidelines for implementation during the 2017-2018 promotion cycle. The Advisory Committee completed and finalized the new strategic plan. In addition, the Advisory Committee approved the Department of Pharmacy Practice Academic Integrity Policy developed by the Departmental Curriculum Committee.

Faculty continue to engage in cutting-edge research. Several faculty members received large grants to support their research.

Department faculty are world-renowned and contributing to new knowledge through their research programs. The department is pleased that several new researchers have joined or will join efforts to carry out the department’s research mission. Competitive research funding continues to increase as faculty continue to receive funding in a competitive environment. More information on faculty research projects can be found later in this report.

The Department of Pharmacy Practice along with the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy established the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research (CPR) several years ago. The center is an interdisciplinary research unit of the College of Pharmacy. The department collaborates with CPR to provide research assistance for clinical faculty.

As in the past, the Department of Pharmacy Practice continues to be active in international pharmacy. In 2016, faculty members presented invited lectures at international meetings in Abu Dhabi, China, Israel, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, Peru, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Faculty also continue to give lectures and recitations to pharmacy students in Hong Kong and Malta. The department also hosted many international pharmacists from partner schools for short-term visits to learn more about clinical pharmacy. Andy Donnelly helped coordinate two visits for directors of hospital pharmacy from China to learn about clinical pharmacy services and education program development in the United States. Christina Mactal Haaf and Jennifer Pham continued their positions as the coordinators for the collaborative degree programs the College of Pharmacy has established with University of Hong Kong and University of Malta. Several faculty members earned adjunct faculty status at University of Malta to recognize their contributions to the program. Nancy Shapiro continued as the program coordinator for the department’s international summer program, Contemporary Pharmacy Practice and Education, for students and pharmacists from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other areas of Southeast Asia that took place for one month during the summer. To give students the opportunity to experience pharmacy practice in another country, the department partners with Siriraj Hospital and Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand to offer an elective APPE rotation.

In addition to faculty development seminars and workshops, the department also held a faculty networking event that recognized department faculty who received significant awards. The awardees honored included: • • • • • • • • • • •

The mentoring and faculty development programs continued to grow in the department. Currently, 57 faculty members are formally assigned a mentor. Since the mentoring and faculty development programs’ debut in 2008, 18 clinical faculty have successfully achieved promotion to clinical associate or clinical professor. In addition, 10 tenure track faculty have successfully pursued promotion to associate professor or professor since the program’s inception. Faculty development programs this year focused on bringing in outside experts in various areas to not only speak, but also to meet with the faculty in their area of expertise to provide more focused assistance to faculty. The annual preceptor’s conference organized by the department featured three external, highly regarded speakers. The mid-career faculty development program continued in 2016 for the mid-level and senior clinical faculty in order to increase opportunities for scholarship in the department. One aspect of the program allows promoted or close to promoted faculty the ability to request to be taken off of service for four to 12 weeks to pursue or complete a scholarly activity, such as a research project or writing a paper. Several faculty took advantage of this option and were able to complete manuscripts and/or research projects during their time off of service.

Not only did faculty have the opportunity to network with each other, they also celebrated faculty successes. In addition to the award event, the department also organized a summer networking barbeque and a winter networking event for faculty.

The department also continued the networking functions for faculty, preceptors, donors, and alums called the Partners in Practice events. These functions celebrate partnerships with preceptors who support department educational programs and give the gift of their knowledge, time, and energy with students; generous donors who make many department activities and scholarships possible; and alums who continually give back to the department in numerous ways. Over the years, preceptors have donated approximately $100,000 to the college and for that the college is very grateful. A list of preceptors can be found later in this report. The department also held events at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting in Baltimore and at the summer Crosstown Classic where the Chicago White Sox take on the Chicago Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. Both celebrated great attendance and the department plans to continue hosting these functions.

The department has a commitment to ensure that faculty provide the best teaching possible. Under the leadership of Kristen Goliak, the Department of Pharmacy Practice Educational Policy Committee continues to meet on a regular basis.

In 2016, the committee worked to finalize a department policy related to academic dishonesty, and continued to discuss uniform exam administration policies. As in previous years, the EPC tracked scores on all faculty members’ teaching evaluations and peer evaluations. Faculty members also receive their individual feedback and evaluations. The EPC also tracks teaching assignments to assist the department with teaching loads and determining who is in need of teaching opportunities. The committee also reviews any concerns that arise as part of the fall and spring course coordinator meetings and addresses the issues as appropriate.

Providing the highest level of pharmaceutical care to the patients that seek care from the department’s seven ambulatory pharmacies continues to be an important focus. Three clinical faculty members who have completed community pharmacy residencies and have expertise in community pharmacy continue to enhance clinical services provided at the Wood Street Pharmacy. Two of these faculty members also provide care to underserved patients at Community Health, a free clinic on the west side of Chicago run completely by volunteers. The department continues various marketing strategies for pharmacies, including publishing a blog on a variety of topics supported by the Drug Information Group, maintaining a social media presence on Facebook and Twitter, and developing new marketing pieces for department pharmacies. The Specialty Pharmacy service obtained new office space for its prior approval staff.

Department hospital pharmacy faculty continue to expand the services provided to UI Health.

The Pharmacy Value Analysis Committee has identified approximately $3 million in medication expenditure savings since its inception. The process for credentialing and privileging of clinical pharmacists has begun. Faculty developed an opioid public service announcement video for UI Health called Improving Opioid Safety. Pharmacy protocols continue to be developed that allow pharmacists to initiate and/or modify therapy. Likewise, new medication-related clinical guidelines were developed and implemented in 2016. Several successful Zero Harm Program initiatives were initiated related to increasing the use of the drug library on IV pumps and ensuring the appropriate use of opioid therapy. In addition, pharmacy faculty led a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis to improve safety of opioid therapy throughout the medication use process. Further, the dispensing of oral liquid prescription medications was standardized to prevent patient/parent drug administration errors.

Department ambulatory pharmacies as well as faculty continue to be very active in providing flu shots to the university community via department pharmacies as well as through the partnership with the State of Illinois. As in the past, department faculty, residents, and P4 students worked together to administer flu vaccine to as many eligible state employees and retirees as possible. As part of this program, approximately 1,100 vaccinations were administered during the 2016 flu fall season.

Numerous department faculty are active in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. In 2016, several faculty held leadership positions within the organizaiton. These include: • • • • • • • • • •

To summarize, it has been a busy and productive year for the department. While not all department accomplishments could be featured in this report, these highlights are just a few of the contributions the Department of Pharmacy Practice has made to the college, university, and the profession of pharmacy both locally and worldwide. Many thanks to the faculty, staff, residents, and fellows for their hard work in achieving the goals in the department’s strategic plan as well as bringing the department’s mission to life. research time, and updating the promotion and tenure guidelines. Activities detailed in the publication list of this report supports the progress made in this area. Research funding among Pharmacy Practice faculty also showed improvement in the last year, with several competitive federal grants awarded. Specific information on externally funded grants and contracts is available in a separate section of this report.

Associate Head for Education › KRISTEN GOLIAK Throughout 2016, the department Educational Policy Committee met several times to discuss and review various pertinent educational issues. The members of the committee were Chair Kristen Goliak, Sheila Allen, Lauren Dandeles, Julie Golembiewski, Jeremy Johnson, Frank Paloucek, Louise Parent-Stevens, and Eljim Tesoro. The department commends committee members for all of their efforts and guidance that they provided to the Department and to the chair of the college’s EPC committee, Rob DiDomenico.

The committee reviewed feedback, revised, and finalized a student recitation leader evaluation form. Several suggestions and improvements were made to the original form. The college’s Assessment Committee then reviewed the form, approving it for use in the department. The form was implemented to evaluate faculty in a few courses in both the spring and fall semesters with favorable results.

In 2016, the process to track all faculty members’ teaching evaluations, peer evaluations, and teaching assignments continued. Updates to this process continue on a regular basis in order to ensure that the faculty receive necessary feedback and evaluations. This information also assisted the department with teaching loads and identifying who is in need of teaching opportunities, as the college’s new curriculum began in fall 2016.

In February and October, course coordinator meetings for both core and elective courses were held for department coordinators to allow for an open discussion regarding issues they were facing such as issues related to administering exams, meeting attendance policy for students, TA issues, class fee procedure, registration issues with electives, unprofessionalism, and recitation facilitation issues. These meetings will continue to be offered to departmental course coordinators each semester as they always highlight issues that need to be addressed.

The Resident Teaching Certificate Committee met throughout the spring and revised the program for the 20162017 residency class. The program expanded from last year and grew to include 51 PGY1 residents in the program representing eight PGY1 programs and three PGY1 Community programs. The committee is proud to offer this program to so many Chicagoland area residents. The committee received positive feedback from both the residents and their program directors.

Another important component of the research mission is the recruitment of tenure track faculty to expand the department’s research programs and sustain its reputation for performing cutting edge research. This effort has resulted in the successful recruitment of new faculty with research interests in pedagogy, drug development for addiction, infectious diseases, the microbiome, and pharmacokinetics. Several campus-wide initiatives are also expected to assist in advancing the department’s clinical research efforts, including the renewal by the National Institutes of Health of the UIC’s Center for Clinical and Translational Science as well as UIC partnerships with Northwestern University and University of Chicago in the NIH-funded Illinois Precision Medicine Consortium. Availability of an electronic submission portal for the Institutional Review Board and Grants and Contracts in the Office of Research Services should serve to streamline administrative research processes.

The department invites alumni familiar with former laboratories to stop by and visit the current state-of-the art facilities.

These renovated facilities are located on the first floor of the College of Pharmacy and encompass the previous clinical research laboratory and “Cowpen” space. These updated facilities provide faculty with the capabilities needed to support the department’s research efforts in biopharmaceutical analysis, drug development, drug metabolism, molecular biology, and pharmacogenomics.

Associate Head for Research › JIM FISCHER In 2016, the department continued to make progress in implementing the aims laid out in the 2014 Research Strategic Plan. An important focus is advancing scholarly activity among the clinical track faculty. Efforts in achieving this aim include disseminating information about potential research prospects, targeted monthly seminars, increasing emphasis on scholarly activity in annual performance reviews, allowing faculty to apply for protected

Department Spotlight DIRECT ORAL ANTICOAGULANTS (DOAC) SCREENING SERVICE

NANCY SHAPIRO, Operations Manager ELLEN UPPULURI, Clinical Pharmacist, Ambulatory Care In 2015, the Antithrombosis Clinic implemented a new clinical service involving the direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), the newest class of oral anticoagulants. This service was developed to evaluate all new and refill prescriptions for DOACs that are generated from the UI Health hospital, clinics, and emergency department. Before initiation, the proposed service was discussed with physician and pharmacist representatives throughout UIH, and the process was widely accepted as a quality assurance program. In collaboration with the Anticoagulation Task Force at the hospital, ATC pharmacists also helped create a DOAC clinical care guideline that promotes consistent management of DOACs across the health system and is utilized by the pharmacists involved in the DOAC screening service. Through this service, DOAC prescriptions are identified through an electronic, daily prescribing report. Pharmacy Information Technology staff assisted in the creation of the prescribing report. ATC pharmacists review these DOAC prescriptions to determine the patient’s eligibility for DOAC treatment and accuracy of the prescribed doses based on indication, contraindications, renal function, and drug interactions. The pharmacists also ensure laboratory data are up to date and provide recommendations for continued laboratory monitoring.

Providers are contacted as needed if recommendations are made. The service contacts patients newly initiated on a DOAC via phone calls to verify medication access and to provide education.

During the first six months of the service, 30 percent of new DOAC prescriptions at UI Health required intervention through the service.

Common interventions include recommendations for medication or dose changes to improve DOAC safety and efficacy, assistance with patient medication access, and treatment coordination. Almost half of patients newly initiated on a DOAC were able to be contacted through the service and receive education. Students and residents have also participated in the DOAC screening service as part of their clinical experiences in ATC. A poster on the service was presented at the Anticoagulation Forum’s 14th National Conference in April 2017.

HEART CENTER PHARMACOTHERAPY SERVICES VICKI GROO, Clinical Pharmacist, Cardiology Clinical pharmacists in the section of cardiology provide care and expertise to patients with heart failure, arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidemia, and manage anticoagulation at two outpatient clinics on the campus medical center in Chicago.

In 2011, Vicki Groo started an independent pharmacist-run medication titration clinic for patients with systolic heart failure. Referred patients’ medications are adjusted with the goal to achieve a regimen as recommended in national treatment guidelines. Since implementation, clinic hours have expanded from four patients every other week to six patients weekly. The clinic has also increased the number of diseases managed, as cardiologists have been referring patients with resistant hypertension and diastolic heart failure. A paper evaluating outcomes for patients referred to Dr. Groo versus those who were only managed by their cardiologist is being submitted for publication.

In 2015, the heart failure team implemented a new phone service to increase patient access to the team. Dr. Groo responds to calls for one-third of the year. A moderated poster was presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in 2017 highlighting the use of the phone line to resolve medication related problems. Dr. Groo also worked with the heart failure team to develop a shared care program with another hospital for patients receiving left ventricular assist devices. Drs. Groo and Hellenbart manage the anticoagulation for these patients.

In 2016, pharmacists in specialty and ambulatory care started a consult service to facilitate appropriate prescribing, access, and patient training for the new injectable cholesterol lowering drugs, PCSK9 inhibitors. A poster describing this service was presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in 2017 and a manuscript has been accepted for publication.

In addition to providing cardiovascular pharmacotherapy, Drs. Vicki Groo, Erika Hellenbart, and Jessica Tilton were involved in several scholarly activities in 2016. At the national level, faculty members served as a moderator for the Heart Failure Society of America annual meeting, on the membership committee for the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Cardiology prn, expert reviewer for several journals. In addition, Dr. Groo represented UIC and the state of Illinois at the American College of Cardiology Legislative Conference in Washington DC. At the regional level, they provided lectures or continuing education programs to the Illinois and Wisconsin chapters of the American College of Cardiology, Mended Hearts and Pharmacy Tech Topics.

At the university level, faculty members coordinate and lecture for the cardiology course and provide experiential training to PharmD students, PGY1 and PGY2 residents. Additional activities included, serving as a content expert for hospital medication protocols, lecturing for the PharmD program in Malta, and grading Hong Kong University student’s research dissertations.

IMMUNIZATION UPDATE SHEILA ALLEN, Immunization Program Director This year, the Department of Pharmacy Practice continued to make a tremendous effort to increase immunization awareness and delivery not only at the college and university, but also within the surrounding community, the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois. In April, the department offered its 14th annual APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate Program at the college that trained 180 third year pharmacy students. In October, for the tenth straight year the department partnered with the State of Illinois to administer the seasonal influenza vaccine to all State of Illinois employees and retirees. Pharmacy faculty, residents, and P4 students rallied together to administer seasonal influenza vaccine to as many eligible participants as possible. University Health Services and the College of Nursing joined the department’s immunization efforts. In total, the department administered 1,116 seasonal influenza vaccines over the course of two dates. In addition, the department partnered with UI Health to vaccinate all hospital employees and eligible health science students on one day as part of a mass vaccination clinic. These mass vaccination clinics throughout campus continue to be well received and appreciated by attendees for the clinics’ efficiency and convenience. Mass vaccination clinics have also helped to increase campus immunization rates and recognition of the pharmacist as an immunization provider. Overall, it was a successful year and the Immunization Program is very appreciative of all the support from faculty, residents, staff, and students in accomplishing these efforts. This was truly a team effort from the department!

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH & PROGRAMS JENNIFER PHAM AND CHRISTINA HAAF

Coordinators, International Collaborative Clinical Pharmacy Programs

The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy continues their collaborations with the University of Hong Kong Master of Clinical Pharmacy program since 2013 and the University of Malta Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy programs since 2014. The college continued to contribute several teaching activities, which included the sharing of prerecorded lectures, conducting live and videoconference case-based teaching, and evaluating student academic performance through case presentations and written examinations.

In March 2016, Dr. Jeffrey Mucksavage visited the University of Malta to conduct clinical activities including didactic teaching, evaluation of student journal club and case presentations, clinical patient assessment exercise, and participation in hospital physician rounds.

As part of an ongoing program development, the College of Pharmacy invited Ms. Phoebe Chan, faculty and director of the HKU Master of Clinical Pharmacy program, for a one-month visit to learn how clinical pharmacy is practiced by observing several clinical pharmacists at different practice sites. In addition, Ms. Chan had the opportunity to spend significant amount of time with geriatric clinical pharmacy faculty, including Dr. Mike Koronkowski, in order to add geriatrics to HKU’s curriculum. This was implemented at the HKU in the Fall of 2016. Furthermore, College of Pharmacy faculty continue to evaluate students’ research projects from the University of Hong Kong.

The college hosted two, 2-week clinical pharmacy services and education development programs for clinical pharmacists and pharmacy directors from Thailand and various provinces in China.

Programs were conducted in August and October of 2016. These educational programs included an overview of contemporary pharmacy services with an emphasis on clinical pharmacy service development, provision, and management as well as experiential education, clinical skill development, and practice role modeling. Participants also had the opportunity to shadow clinical pharmacists in two different practice sites.

The College of Pharmacy continues to collaborate with China Medical University in Taiwan, with a monthlong summer program. The purpose of this program is to nurture interest in clinical pharmacy practice and education. The program was conducted by 30 pharmacy faculty and included topics on common disease states in various inpatient and ambulatory settings, clinical skill enhancement, description of unique clinical pharmacy practice models, and patient case-based teaching. In 2016, the program expanded to 55 students from multiple universities, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Korea, Philippines, and Thailand. Nancy Shapiro coordinates this program.

These collaborations have created novel clinical education programs for international pharmacy students and pharmacists allowing them to increase their clinical skills and knowledge. The increased understanding of clinical practice in the U.S. may help shape their future academic and professional development.

MEDICATION THERAPY MANAGEMENT INDEPENDENT STUDY ELECTIVE TIFFANY SCOTT-HORTON, Operations Coordinator JESSICA TILTON, Clinical Coordinator The Medication Therapy Management Clinic (MTMC) offers a special project elective (MTM 390) to third-year pharmacy students. Typically, five students are selected through an application process for both the fall and spring semesters. The course allows students to receive hands on clinical experience by evaluating the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) for medication changes that occur during both UI Health inpatient hospital stays and outpatient clinic visits.

Through this medication reconciliation process, students can divert any potential prescribing errors by ensuring a prescription is written when indicated by a physicians’ note. This elective experience helps students gain insight into how SOAP notes are written in the clinical setting and how to identify the most pertinent information in the EMR. Students also gain experience in interacting with patients. Students call patients one week prior to their appointment to remind them of their upcoming visit as well as discuss recent medication changes identified in the EMR, address medication adherence, identify ‘as needed’ medications they would like to have refilled, and remind patients to bring adherence aids such as pillboxes to their returning appointment. During these interactions, students may encounter questions, concerns, and/or complaints that they can then discuss and try to resolve with the clinical pharmacist. This further enhances students’ interaction with the health care team. This elective helps to prepare the students for their fourth-year APPE rotations and their future careers as pharmacist, while also to giving them a deeper understanding of an ambulatory care practice setting.

MILE SQUARE HEALTH CENTER CLINICAL PHARMACY SERVICES DAPHNE SMITH MARSH, Clinical Pharmacist, Ambulatory Care Daphne Smith Marsh is the clinical pharmacist at the Mile Square Health Center, which is a Federally Qualified Health Center providing comprehensive health care for primarily underserved adults and children at various clinic sites throughout Chicago. Dr. Smith Marsh provides chronic disease state education and medication management at the UI Health Mile Square Main and Cicero clinic sites. She also receives referrals to assist patients from other core Mile Square sites, such as the Back of the Yards and Englewood clinics. As a certified diabetes educator since 2001, she primarily receives referrals for patients with uncontrolled diabetes as well as persons who have prediabetes or need nutrition education.

Patients are scheduled for 30 to 60 minute appointments; however, Dr. Smith Marsh also works with patients for same day consultations as recommended by their provider. Dr. Smith Marsh worked with Mile Square patients enrolled in the Health Promoters and Pharmacists in Diabetes Team Management study, which was completed in the spring of 2016.

Dr. Smith Marsh became board certified in advanced diabetes management in June of 2016. She is working to extend services provided through the UI Health Diabetes Wellness Education Program, where she worked for more than 10 years, to patients

at Mile Square. Dr. Smith Marsh precepts pharmacy students and residents and has hosted visiting international pharmacists at her Mile Square Clinic sites. A Floor Stock Medication Learning Module for Mile Square clinic staff was developed this year with the assistance of a postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy resident.

NEUROLOGY PHARMACOTHERAPY SERVICES MITRA HABIBI, Clinical Pharmacist, Neurology Mitra Habibi is the clinical pharmacist in the Neurology Clinic. She sees patients in multidisciplinary epilepsy clinics working directly with epileptologists in assessing patients’ response, tolerance, and monitoring of antiepileptic drugs.

She works closely with the multiple sclerosis neurologists, nurses and UIH specialty pharmacy to ensure timely access to disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) and coordinating education and injection training for these patients.

With the introduction of new oral and infusion DMTs with REMS, Dr. Habibi has established protocols for initiating and monitoring of these drugs. As part of this collaboration, her role also includes initial dose monitoring of first approved oral DMT and confirming that all the REMS criteria are met prior to initiation of each therapy. Dr. Habibi is also a member of the multidisciplinary memory and aging clinic and participates in weekly team conferences providing feedback regarding patients’ medication therapy. She provides consultation services to the pediatric neurologists and nurse practitioners. In addition to her clinical role, Dr. Habibi delivers several annual pharmacotherapy lectures to the neurology residents and fellows. Her clinic is also a rotation site for UIC College of Pharmacy students and residents as well as PGY2 psychiatry residents from the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.

OUTPATIENT-BASED CLINICAL PHARMACY SERVICES – WOOD STREET/PCC PHARMACY NAZIA SOMANI BABUL, MARLOWE DJURIC KACHLIC, JENNIFER CHAN MARCELO, Clinical Pharmacists, Outpatient-

based Ambulatory Care

The clinical pharmacists at the Wood Street/PCC Pharmacy continue to develop their role in providing medication therapy management for pharmacy patients in the outpatient pharmacy setting. Eligible patients can be referred to the clinical pharmacist team to receive outpatient based clinical pharmacy services. The purpose of this service is to work with patients in the community setting to provide them with education, monitoring, and tools to empower them to improve their own health outcomes. Services that patients can be referred for include comprehensive medication reconciliation; disease state monitoring for diabetes, hypertension, and asthma; screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure, and body mass index; education/training on various disease states and medical devices; immunization assessment; and tobacco cessation counseling. Patients enroll in this service through referrals from providers and active recruitment by the pharmacy staff.

In addition, Outpatient Based Clinical Pharmacy Services currently uses the web-based clinical platforms MirixaPro℠ and OutcomesMTM® to identify and provide standardized patient medication therapy management with contracted health plans. The patient care services provided addresses Star Ratings, medication adherence and omission gaps in care, and disease-specific medication management for contracted health plans.

Clinical pharmacists reach out to providers to make recommendations in optimizing patients’ medication regimen and coordinating care. The care provided in outpatient pharmacies is currently documented via electronic medical record. The team continues to establish their service by standardizing referral processes within the pharmacy and assessing the various types of interventions the team provided thus far for patients.

The UIC PGY-1 Community Residency Program continues to be based in the Wood Street/PCC Pharmacy.

Residents assists in providing outpatient pharmacy services as well as working on implementing a new clinical service at the pharmacy as a part of the residency longitudinal project experience.

SPECIALTY PHARMACY JOANN STUBBINGS, Assistant Director of Specialty

Pharmacy Services

Specialty drugs are broadly defined as high-cost prescription medications used to treat complex, chronic diseases such as cancer, hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis. They often require special handling such as refrigeration and special administration techniques such as injection or infusion. Spending on specialty drugs doubled in the past five years, and they now account for 40 percent of total drug spending in the United States.

At UIC, the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Department established an onsite Specialty Pharmacy to address the needs of UI Health patients as well as UIC employees and students. UI Health Specialty Pharmacy consists of a central call center and dispensing services at the Wood Street Pharmacy and Oncology Clinic Pharmacy. The pharmacy offers comprehensive, integrated, and local services from diagnosis to delivery.

UI Health Specialty Pharmacy achieved great success and growth in 2016. Revenue was $42 million, the number of active patients grew to 618, and a total of 967 prior authorizations were approved. Time to prior authorization approval was 1.49 days. Overall medication adherence was 94 percent, well above the industry standard of 80 percent. There were 163 new treatment initiations. The Oncology Clinic Pharmacy received URAC accreditation as a specialty pharmacy. Two UI Health pharmacies are now URAC accredited: the Wood Street Pharmacy and Oncology Clinic Pharmacy. Also in 2016, three UI Health pharmacies achieved ACHC specialty pharmacy accreditation: Wood Street Pharmacy, Oncology Clinic Pharmacy, and Eye and Ear Infirmary Pharmacy. The accreditations allows specialty pharmacy to gain access to limited distribution drugs and payer networks. Access was gained to the Biogen limited distribution drugs Tecfidera and Plegridy, and to the specialty pharmacy network for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Specialty pharmacy secured its first contract that will pay for reporting data to a pharmaceutical company. A PGY-1 Specialty Community Residency was launched with the first resident, Christopher Schumpp. Specialty pharmacy employs three student pharmacists as well as accepted ten P-4 rotation students, and eight independent study students. Specialty pharmacy enjoys strong relationships with the specialty clinics and the embedded clinical pharmacists. Specialty pharmacists gave presentations at major pharmacy meetings and Dr. Rebekah Anguiano’s poster on primary medication non-adherence won a platinum ribbon award at AMCP Annual Meeting. SPS pharmacists and technician were featured on the cover of the June 2016 issue of the American Journal of Health System Pharmacists.

Looking ahead, Specialty Pharmacy will continue to be one of the leading health-system based specialty pharmacies in the United States. Ongoing challenges include access to limited distribution drugs and restricted payer networks. Specialty pharmacy hopes that its story of comprehensive, integrated direct patient care services that improve efficiency and lower cost will resonate with payers and pharmaceutical manufacturers alike.

TELEMEDICINE MELISSA BADOWSKI, Clinical Pharmacist, HIV and Telemedicine Drs. Melissa Badowski and Thomas Chiampas, members of the Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy, and Dr. Juliana Chan are all in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. These clinical pharmacists are part of the Telemedicine Program with the Illinois Department of Corrections and UI Health. Since beginning in July 2010, the IDOC Telemedicine Service has provided dedicated healthcare needs to approximately 1,600 prisoners infected with Human Immunodeficiency virus and 800 infected with hepatitis C virus. Drs. Badowski and Chiampas service the HIV population while Dr. Chan provides pharmaceutical care to patients with liver disorders primarily focusing on HCV. The IDOC Telemedicine Program has served as an academic clinical rotation site for pharmacy, nursing, and medical students as well as international students and pharmacists. In addition, this practice has served as a site for numerous research endeavors and educational opportunities such as an interprofessional collaborative practice elective and an on-line telemedicine elective. In 2016, Dr. Badowski received the Gita Patel Best Practice Recognition Award from the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists.

Department Section Updates ADULT PRIMARY CARE TEAM LOUISE PARENT STEVENS, Team Leader The Adult Primary Care Team continues to expand the role of the clinical pharmacist in the prevention and management of chronic disease states in the primary care clinics at UIC. Using approved protocols and clinical guidelines, team members work in tandem with other health care providers to manage diabetes, anticoagulation, asthma, and traveler’s health in their patient populations. The Mile Square Health Centers deliver pharmaceutical care to the underserved in the Chicago metro area. Team members conduct research to assess the impact of clinical pharmacy services and provide education to pharmacy and medical students and residents on pharmacotherapeutic care topics.

ADVANCED PHARMACY PRACTICE EXPERIENCE PROGRAM KRISTEN GOLIAK, Director The experiential education group, which is comprised of Drs. Kristen Goliak, Sheila Allen, Allison Schriever, Louise Parent-Stevens, Latha Radhakrishnan, Marlowe Djuric-Kachlic and Jennifer Dietrich, had a very successful year.

In 2016, the Department of Pharmacy Practice continued major partnerships with Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and Stroger Hospital for both IPPE and APPE students. The group is extremely grateful of these relationships that help continue to maintain student placements.

In May, 202 students graduated from UIC College of Pharmacy after completing 1,212 APPE’s.

Each student completed four core APPE’s in the areas of ambulatory care, community, hospital, and adult medicine as well as two elective APPE’s in the area of their choice. The experiential education group is very proud of these students and the successes they achieved while in pharmacy school. The group is also extremely thankful to all of the faculty and external preceptors who accepted these students on their APPE’s as well as the opportunities and education provided.

At the Class of 2016 graduate’s dinner reception, students proudly awarded the Golden Apple Award to Dr. Paul Pluta and the UIC Preceptor of the Year award to Dr. Marlowe Djuric-Kachlic.

The awards recognized these distinguished pharmacists for their dedication and commitment to the educational development of the graduates.

Also in May, the experiential group held a preceptor conference. The conference was well attended by outside preceptors as well as our internal faculty preceptors. There were 108 attendees on the Chicago campus and 16 attendees on the Rockford campus who joined the conference via ITV. This was the fourth interactive preceptor conference with Rockford and it went extremely well. The conference included three sessions: Teaching Across the Generations: Time for New Cookie Cutters, Medication Safety: We’ve Made Great Strides but We Still Have a Long Way to Go, and Entrustable Professional Activities: Providing Feedback on Performance.

The 2016 conference provided a great opportunity for preceptors to acquire new knowledge and teaching techniques as well as to network with one another.

ANTITHROMBOSIS CLINIC NANCY SHAPIRO, Operations Manager The Antithrombosis Clinic Team is a clinical care unit of the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences Center housed in the Outpatient Care Center’s Heart Center. The team is comprised of seven clinical pharmacist faculty who provide direct patient care and clinical pharmacy services. Dr. Nancy Shapiro serves as operations coordinator and Drs. Erika Hellenbart, Nina Huynh, Ann Kichta, and James Lee also work in the clinic. New staff members this year include Drs. Meghan McComb and Ellen Uppuluri. The Antithrombosis Clinic Team also utilizes dedicated pharmacy technician support from Emi Narcise and Jessy Johnson.

With the goal of maximizing benefits as well as reducing adverse effects and complications resulting from antithrombotic therapies, the team provided direct patient care to approximately 500 unique patients and approximately 8,000 face-to-face patient care visits in 2016. Clinic referrals come from onsite clinics, emergency department, and hospital units as well as affiliated off-site clinics and community sites from external providers. Clinic staff served on UI Health committees and provided clinical expertise

about the development and revisions of clinical care guidelines and protocols utilized across UI Health. The Antithrombosis Clinic served as a clinical training site for seven APPE pharmacy students, nine PGY1 and PGY2 residents, and four international pharmacist trainees. In addition, the team facilitated experiential patient based interviews for several second and third year pharmacy students. Scholarly and research productivity from the team included publications in peer reviewed journals; abstracts presented at scientific meetings; invited presentations at international, national, regional, and local professional conferences; peer reviewers for several pharmacy and medical journals; and leadership responsibilities with several state and national pharmacy committees.

COMMUNITYHEALTH – UIC CLINICAL PHARMACY SERVICES NAZIA BABUL AND JENNIFER MARCELO, Clinical Pharmacists,

Ambulatory Care

UIC clinical pharmacists Drs. Nazia Somani Babul and Jennifer Chan Marcelo meet patients on an appointment basis at CommunityHealth at the West Town location.

CommunityHealth is the largest volunteer-based clinic in the nation, and it serves as a medical home delivering comprehensive, high quality, patient-centered health care at no cost to low-income, uninsured individuals in Illinois. The clinical pharmacists provide clinical pharmacy services such as medication therapy management, diabetes care, blood pressure management, medication reconciliation, medication administration technique education, smoking cessation, and immunization assessments. They provide disease state management under collaborative agreements and create patient-centered comprehensive plans. Pharmacists also make cost effective medication therapy recommendations in consideration of the formulary that is available through the CommunityHealth Pharmacy, and serve as a drug information resource to other providers at the clinic.

At CommunityHealth, Drs. Babul and Marcelo work collaboratively with physicians and nurse practitioners to provide comprehensive care to their patients. They were co-leaders in establishing the Diabetes Care Group, a service provided to patients with an A1c greater than nine percent. Due to the success of the Diabetes Care Group model, it has been utilized to create a similar service for patients with hypertension called the Hypertension Care Group. Most recently, they have assisted to create a diabetes protocol that allows pharmacists to make oral and insulin medication therapy adjustments independently. In addition, Drs. Babul and Marcelo received this year as the co-recipients of the CommunityHealth Visionary Award, which honors those who had demonstrated dedication and innovation in providing patient care.

Currently, Drs. Babul and Marcelo are working with staff at CommunityHealth to create a more formalized tobacco cessation service. Additionally, they serve on the P&T Committee at CommunityHealth and precept students on their ambulatory care rotation through UIC College of Pharmacy.

CRITICAL CARE JEFF MUCKSAVAGE, Team Leader The Critical Care Clinical Pharmacy Team uses the critical care environment to meet the mission goals of service, teaching, and scholarly activity. The group is comprised of pharmacists whose practice areas include medical intensive care, cardiac intensive care, neuroscience intensive care, emergency medicine, toxicology, and anesthesia services. Members are at the forefront of clinical pharmacy practice in their respective areas and are integral members of the multidisciplinary critical care teams.

In 2016, the PGY-2 residents of the critical care group presented at their annual critical care symposium hosted at the college. This was a two-hour continuing education program titled Updates, Controversies, and Defining the Management of Sepsis. Speakers at this program included Drs. Alexandra Goncharenko (PGY-2 Cardiology), Paul Staffieri (PGY-2 Critical Care), and Kyle Gordon (PGY-2 Emergency Medicine). It was a memorable gathering of alumni, former residents, and friends of the college.

The following members of the critical care team attained notable achievements in 2016. Dr. Robert Didomenico, cardiology, was elected chair of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Cardiology PRN. Dr. Scott Benken, medical intensive care, initiated, organized, and chaired the Chicagoland Critical Care Conference (C4). This is a full-day symposium hosted at the college with approximately 200 critical care pharmacist attendees from all over the country. He also presented at the meeting on the management of hypertensive crisis. Dr. Renee Petzel-Gimbar participated on the North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology ACMT Pre-meeting Symposium committee that designed eight hours of continuing education programming. She also spoke during the symposium. Dr. Keri Kim, neurosciences, presented a Pharmacotherapy of Neurocritical Care Series webinar for the Neurocritical Care Society on venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in the neurocritical care patient. Dr. Jeffrey Mucksavage, Neurosciences, spoke at the Neurocritical Care Society annual meeting on the challenges of caring for the Parkinson patient. In addition to speaking at the Neurocritical Care Society annual meeting, Dr. Eljim Tesoro, neurosciences, was named chair of the Pharmacy Committee and received a Presidential Citation award for a second consecutive year for his contributions to the society.

DRUG INFORMATION GROUP MIKE GABAY, Director During 2016, the Drug Information Group continued to expand services to new clients including Procured Health, Accord Healthcare, and PerformRX. Currently, the DIG has approximately 30 active contracts providing a variety of drug information-related services including responding to individual drug information requests, formulary reviews, training programs, database development, and completion of medical writing projects. More information on the types of services the DIG provides may be found at www.uicdruginfo.com. Projects of note in 2016 included the completion of a web-based specialty product pipeline (www.forxcast. org), development and ongoing implementation of a formulary management certificate program, and updating of patient-focused drug information for Healthline.com. In order to successfully meet the needs of the group’s client base, the DIG hired three new faculty members in 2016 as well as a full-time information technology specialist.

In 2016, the DIG also received notice from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists that its UIC/Takeda Pharmaceuticals PGY2 Drug Information residency program received a full six years of accreditation. Takeda fully funds this program, with the resident spending half the year at Takeda and the other half with the DIG. This year the program will graduate its third resident. Additionally, Director of the Drug Information Group Mike Gabay, was given the Distinguished Drug Information Practitioner Award by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Drug Information Practice and Research Network.

HEMATOLOGY & ONCOLOGY CHRISTINA MACTAL HAAF, Team Leader The Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Team provides pharmaceutical care to the inpatient medical oncology and hematology/stem cell transplant units as well as the ambulatory cancer clinic, including further expansion of services in the UI Health Multiple Myeloma Clinic. Their services involve collaborative physician support so that clinical pharmacists manage both anti-cancer drug therapy and supportive care medications that UI Health cancer patients require.

The consistent hematology/oncology pharmacy team presence is evident from the local to international level. In addition to their work in clinical research publications, each member actively participates in numerous college, interdisciplinary university health system, and national organization committees. Team member committee work includes data safety monitoring, institutional review board, stem cell transplant quality improvement, cancer research protocol review, pain, and nutrition as well as pharmacy resident and oncology advisory boards. This specialty group of clinical pharmacists were also honored with awards and national organization committee service appointments. This past year, Dr. Scott Wirth was inducted as a faculty member of Phi Lambda Sigma honorary pharmacy leadership society and was awarded Teacher of the Year. Dr. Sandra Cuellar was elected chair of the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association Board Certification in Oncology committee and continues to serve on the HOPA oversight as well as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists education steering committees.

Continuing education contributions from the group include presentations by Dr. Karen Sweiss. She presented Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Sickle Cell Disease: Perspectives from Childhood to Adulthood at the 2016 American Society of Bone Marrow Transplant Conference in Hawaii as well as an ASBMT HOPA webinar update for BCOP recertification. Dr. Cuellar presented Beyond the Pillbox: Improving Medication Adherence and Health Outcomes at the ASHP midyear meeting. The Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Team hosted the fifth Annual Oncology Pharmacy Conference with Dr. Cuellar as moderator. With more than 140 pharmacists from the Chicagoland area in attendance, the conference offered contact hours for continuing education.

In addition to practice management and mentoring pharmacy students, PGY1 and PGY2 residents, hematology/oncology faculty support endeavors to educate practicing pharmacists in the United States and abroad, including hosting several visiting pharmacists from Asia in an interactive clinical pharmacy experience at UIC cancer practice areas. Several of these former visiting pharmacists have subsequently become BCOP certified in addition to expanding oncology pharmacy clinical services in their respective countries. Dr. Cuellar was an invited speaker on continuous care in oncology at the 76th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in August 2016 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As founding member of the UIC College of Pharmacy Young Alumni Committee, Dr. Wirth endorses financial assistance for UIC pharmacy students through this committee’s fundraising efforts for student travel awards to present research at national conferences as well as the recent establishment of an endowed scholarship, the Daniel Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship, in honor of a former pharmacy classmate.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES STEWARDSHIP ALAN GROSS, Antimicrobial Stewardship In 2016, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at UI Health continued its mission to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases through the collaboration of College of Pharmacy faculty Drs. Alan Gross and Jamie Paek Susan Bleasdale, MD, from the College of Medicine.

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Program focuses on the education of clinicians and both hospital-wide and individual patient interventions in order to improve patient outcomes related to infectious diseases. In 2016, the program also expanded the antimicrobial stewardship topics taught in the Principles of Drug Action and Therapeutics III core course. Through the collaboration of College of Pharmacy faculty Drs. Gail Itokazu, Chris Schriever, and Alan Gross, a new lecture focused solely on antimicrobial stewardship and a paired three-hour recitation were implemented to introduce students to the expanding roles of pharmacists in stewardship. These experiences allow the students to apply their cumulative infectious diseases knowledge in individual patient scenarios and in developing broader, systems-based antimicrobial stewardship interventions within the hospital setting.

INPATIENT MEDICINE MAT THAMBI, Team Leader The Clinical Pharmacist Medicine Team consists of Drs. Choye, Koronkowski, McPherson, and Thambi who cover internal medicine and Dr. Schmiedeskamp-Rahe who covers gastroenterology and hepatology.

In addition to rounding daily with their respective medical teams, they are substantially involved in teaching at the college as well as acting as preceptors for the experiential programs and pharmacy residents.

The Inpatient Medicine Team continues to execute and improve upon its student-centered transitions of care program, RxCARESTM. During the 2015-2016 academic year, students followed hundreds of patients and made numerous interventions during admission and discharge medication reconciliations as well as during discharge follow-up phone calls.

Dr. Thambi is the Medicine Team leader and continues to coordinate and improve RxCARESTM, while providing data analytics for quality improvement and research development. He is also a voting member of the hospital’s Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and the Anticoagulation Quality Improvement Committee. Additionally, Dr. Thambi serves on the Residency Advisory Committee.

Dr. Choye is the PGY-1 international residency director, with her first international resident graduating in 2017.

She has also successfully recruited for next year’s position and is preparing for an accreditation visit from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacy. This residency provides training for international students mostly graduating from U.S. Doctor of Pharmacy programs that wish to return to their native countries to practice. The mission of the program is to foster the growth of clinical pharmacy outside of the U.S. Dr. Koronkowski continues his involvement in two HRSA-funded geriatric workforce enhancement programs to develop and enhance geriatric curriculum content to address multiple chronic conditions and the complexities of caring for these populations. A medical application, titled Dementia Guide Expert, was launched and is available for free on iTunes and Google Play. Dr. Koronkowski serves on the executive board of the Older Adults Services Advisory Committee for the State of Illinois and on the BRIDGE Model National Advisory Board for Care Transitions.

Dr. McPherson served on the UIC Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Athletics and the Department of Pharmacy Practice Advisory Committee. As director of UIC Pharmacy Undergraduate Programs, Dr. McPherson served as a member of a working group that created PHAR 201: Drugs in Society.

This is an elective course designed to expose UIC undergraduate students to the basic tenets of pharmacy practice, policy, and research.

Dr. Schmiedeskamp-Rahe has become program director for the PGY-2 residency in solid organ transplantation and has recruited a resident for the upcoming year. In addition, she continues to run a region-wide teaching certificate program for more than 50 PGY1 pharmacy residents from ten institutions in the Chicago and Rockford areas. Dr. Schmiedeskamp-Rahe will be joining the faculty senate for her first term in mid-2017.

INTRODUCTORY PHARMACY PRACTICE EXPERIENCE PROGRAM SHEILA M. ALLEN, Director The Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences Program at UIC College of Pharmacy had a great year. The success of this year was all in thanks to a great team that included of six experiential faculty Kristen Goliak, Allison Schriever, Sheila Allen, Louise Parent-Stevens, Latha Radhakrishnan, and Marlowe Djuric-Kachlic; two experiential staff members Jennifer Dietrich and Rhonda Larkin; and a plethora of exceptional and dedicated preceptors.

In the spring 2016 semester, 187 first year pharmacy students completed required hours in a community pharmacy practice setting with our various partners in and around the Chicago and Rockford campus areas as part of the PHAR 342: Experiential I course. Also in the spring, 192 third year pharmacy students on the Chicago and Rockford campuses completed their IPPE hours conducting patient interviews, writing SOAP notes, and presenting patient cases within our medical center under the supervision of Pharmacy Practice clinical faculty and residents as part of the PHAR 354: Experiential IV course. During the month of February, Drs. Djuric Kachlic and Allen co-coordinated a prescription writing workshop for second year medical students within the Essentials of Clinical Medicine course at UIC College of Medicine on the Chicago campus where several third and fourth year pharmacy students led small group breakout sessions on the topic.

During the summer 2016 semester, 190 third year pharmacy students completed required IPPE hours in an inpatient or ambulatory care direct patient care setting as part of the PHAR 357: Experiential V course. In June, a one day workshop for third year medical students enrolled in the Essentials of Clinical Practice and Professionalism at the College of Medicine on the Chicago campus was coordinated, which covered injection techniques, inhaler drug administration, and home diagnostic tests where third year pharmacy students do much of the teaching overseen by Pharmacy Practice faculty.

In the fall semester, PHAR 411: Introduction to Pharmacy Practice was implemented as part of the new curriculum. This course introduces the pharmacist patient care process and focuses on patient care skills such as good communication, medication history taking, medication counseling, and drug administration. As part of this course, 174 first year pharmacy students completed a one-week practice experience in a pharmacy practice area of their choice under the direction of a current fourth year student on advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) or a volunteer preceptor during the month of October. In addition, 185 second year pharmacy students completed IPPE hours related to

hospital practice, patient medication interviewing, and physical assessment skills within the PHAR 352: Experiential II course.

This was the last iteration of this course, with elements of this course now spread throughout the new curriculum and starting as early as the fall semester of their first year. In addition, 198 third year pharmacy students completed their IPPE hours conducting patient care interviews, writing SOAP notes, and presenting patient cases under the supervision of Pharmacy Practice clinical faculty and residents, as well as volunteer preceptors as part of the PHAR 353: Experiential III course.

In 2017, the Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences Program will continue with the roll out of the department’s new curriculum. Faculty are excited about the re-vamped construct for IPPE hours and ready for the changes and challenges that lay ahead. The program is very appreciative of the department support provided in 2016 and grateful to all of the faculty and preceptors in and around the Chicago and Rockford areas who make the IPPE curriculum possible. Program faculty could not do what they do without the continued support.

MEDICATION REVIEW AND ACADEMIC DETAILING MARY LYNN MOODY

Director of Business Development, Assistant Dean for Business Development The Medication and Academic Detailing Unit was established in 2012. It is designed to reduce the use of unnecessary and duplicate medication therapy and reduce the overall prescription drug cost for Illinois Medicaid. This partnership with the State of Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services has been successful in reducing the utilization of unnecessary medications in Illinois Medicaid.

This program targets recipients who are taking more medications than are needed (polypharmacy) for chronic diseases. The focus is on individuals who are taking more than four prescription medications monthly. Pharmacists review the medications and consult with the recipient’s provider to recommend clinically appropriate changes in therapy. Pharmacists also target high cost, high-risk medications and provide telephone consultations to providers with specific recommendations and educational interventions.

This past year, the Medication and Academic Detailing Unit took over the management of the Illinois DocAssist program. This program was implemented in 2008 by IL-HFS in collaboration with UIC Department of Psychiatry in an effort to address access and capacity issues related to child psychiatry in the Illinois Medicaid system. The Illinois DocAssist program provides pediatric psychiatric and behavioral health consultation services to primary care physicians and allied providers enrolled with HFS. The consultation services are designed to support primary care physicians serving non-emergent Medicaid-eligible youth with complex behavioral health and pharmaceutical issues. The MRAD Unit has established a process to identify and refer pediatric Medicaid recipients receiving inappropriate therapy to DocAssist psychiatrists. In addition, the unit has expanded the educational offerings of DocAssist.

MEDICATION THERAPY MANAGEMENT CLINIC JESSICA TILTON, Clinical Coordinator TIFFANY SCOTT-HORTON, Operations Coordinator The pharmacist-run Medication Therapy Management Clinic is located in the UI Health’s Outpatient Care Center.

The clinic’s aim is to lead in medication therapy management through innovation, education, and research to decrease hospitalizations, improve healthcare utilization, reduce costs, and improve a patient’s quality of life.

Clinicians at MTMC focus on helping patients afflicted with chronic disease states improve their medication adherence. Moreover, the clinicians collaborate with the patient’s other health care providers to prevent duplication in therapy, avert or minimize adverse drug events, assist in monitoring a patient’s response to therapy, and ensure continuity of care. As a result, they help improve healthcare utilization and minimize medication costs. MTMC strives to incorporate patient participation in the self-management of their medications and disease states. The clinic facilitates patient access to all necessary medications filled by the Outpatient Care Center Pharmacy on a scheduled, monthly basis.

In 2016, six MTMC pharmacists, Drs. Amanda Eades, Julie Jun, Tiffany ScottHorton, Pearl Stier Jessica Tilton, and Lori Wilken, delivered direct patient care to approximately 300 patients. MTMC ended its final year of an NIH grant titled Health Promoters and Pharmacists in Team Diabetes Management, which evaluated the effects that pharmacists and community health workers can have on African American and Latino patients’ A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol.

Preliminary results have found positive outcomes from the pharmacists’ presence. Once again, the clinic delivered telephonic and face-to-face case-management services to internal medicine BCBS HMO-I patients on a monthly bases. The primary focus was patients with diabetes.

New endeavors involved the clinicians piloting a pharmacist-led transitions of care clinic in partnership with the general medicine clinic. The purpose was to integrate the outpatient pharmacist in the transitions process to help reduce 30-day readmissions and improve clinical outcomes. The clinic targeted patients upon discharge who were admitted for a medication error, a diabetes or an asthma/COPD related diagnosis, or non-adherence.

Patients were scheduled to be seen by a MTMC pharmacist within seven days of discharge. Patients were followed in the clinic for up to three months, then transitioned to appropriate long-term management resources. Additionally, the clinic started a new journey involving a NIH grant that is evaluating the effectiveness of a mobile health diabetes adherence support intervention delivered by MTMC pharmacists and health coaches. Lastly, the clinic was excited to gain more patient care autonomy by having a MTMC hypertension and a MTMC diabetes protocol for internal medicine patients approved by the Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Many MTMC pharmacists participated in community outreach programs such as health fairs, immunization clinics, and monthly senior center disease state activities through the Chicago Department of Family Support Services. This year Dr. Scott-Horton participated in a Singapore continuing education series on Transitions of Care, and Dr. Tilton and Dr. Scott-Horton participated in a remote lecture series as affiliate associate professors for the University of Malta. Lastly, the clinic served as a rotation site for 12 students, a community PGY1 resident, and three ambulatory care PGY2 residents.

PEDIATRIC TEAM KIRSTEN OHLER, Team Leader The Pediatric Clinical Pharmacists’ Group was very active nationally and internationally in 2016. Drs. Jennifer Pham and Kirsten Ohler were invited speakers at the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group’s Annual Meeting, at which they presented a lively debate about the use of probiotics to prevent necrotizing enterocolitis in premature neonates. Dr. Pham spoke in Manila, Philippines and Shenzhen, China as part of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Practice Series educational workshop. She was also an invited speaker on topics related to neonatal and pediatric pharmacy, medication safety, and the role of the pediatric clinical pharmacist in Cebu City, Philippines; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Hong Kong. Dr. Ohler was a speaker in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s Pharmacotherapy Preparatory Review and Recertification Course and the Pediatric Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course. She also served on the planning committee for both courses. Dr. Ohler co-authored a chapter, titled Neonatal Medication Considerations, with a former PGY2 pediatric pharmacy resident for the first edition of the Essential Guide to Clinical Neonatology. She also joined Drs. Pham and Donna Kraus (retired) in authoring the 11th edition of Neonatal Therapy in Koda-Kimble & Young’s Applied Therapeutics textbook. Dr. Isabel Porto passed a rigorous examination to become Board Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialists.

PERSONALIZED MEDICINE SERVICE JOHN GAROFALO, Senior Associate Director for Clinical Services JAMES LEE, Clinical Pharmacist, Ambulatory Care The Personalized Medicine Program at the UI Health is a pharmacist-led multidisciplinary service including laboratory personnel and physicians. The PMP has continued to strengthen and expand from its foundation in warfarin pharmacogenetics, with emphases in patient education of genetic testing and use of personal genetic information in health care, under the coordination of Dr. James Lee with faculty assistance from Drs. Jin Han, Ellen Uppuluri, and Edith Nutescu. To date, more than 1,500 patients initiating oral anticoagulation therapy with warfarin have been genotyped for CYP2C9, VKORC1, and CYP4F2. Genotype-guided dosing continues to be well accepted by UI Health clinicians, with testing and PMP in more than two-thirds of eligible patients newly initiating warfarin.

Planning is ongoing to advance real-world clinical implementation of CYP2C19 genotyping based on recent clinical outcomes data suggesting the benefit of genotype-guided antiplatelet selection to reduce major cardiovascular events following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Although CYP 2C19 genotyping is anticipated to focus on patients undergoing PCI and starting clopidogrel, an additional benefit will be the pre-emptive application of CYP2C19 genotyping to drug therapy in psychiatry and infectious disease. The UI Health Personalized Medicine Program continues to be a training and clinical research site for student pharmacists and residents. PMP anticipates future collaboration in the investigation of novel genetic variants in minority populations and of the clinical impact of preemptive panel-based genotyping implementation.

PHARMACY SERVICES ANDREW J. DONNELLY, Director The first PGY2 resident in Health-System Pharmacy Administration began in July 2016. This residency is split between hospital and ambulatory settings. The resident has been a valuable addition to the department and has worked on and/ or taken the lead in many projects benefiting the department and organization. Her seminar on the various hospital rating systems helped department and college leadership more fully understand the pros and cons of these systems, and why the organization received the ratings that it did.

Pharmacy Service successfully matched for a second resident, who begins in July 2017.

A major focus of 2016 centered on improving the use of opioids in the organization. The coordinator of medication safety and quality took the lead in developing an opioid public service announcement video for UI Health titled Improving Opioid Safety. View this video online at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2amMQ_dk1M8. Through the public service announcement video and other efforts, Pharmacy Service faculty reduced the number of Norco tablets prescribed by physicians on a monthly basis by 21,000. In addition, pharmacy led a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis focused on improving the safety of opioid therapy throughout the medication use process. The pharmacist co-chair of the Pain Committee was instrumental in revising the pain assessment and management clinical care guideline for the institution. Finally, the Drug Diversion Prevention Committee continues to fine-tune its data collection and report generation capabilities to help ensure that opioids are used appropriately at UI Health. It is anticipated that a drug diversion coordinator will be hired in 2017 to be the point person for the organization’s efforts in this area.

Given the significant increases in drug prices seen today, the Pharmacy Value Analysis Committee continues to identify opportunities to reduce medication-related expense for the organization. To date, the committee has identified more than $3 million in savings. Current efforts center on the appropriate use of chemotherapy agents, many of which are quite expensive. The student pharmacist-run Mobile Pharmacy Education (MoPhE) program, supervised by Pharmacy Service’s medicine clinical pharmacists, continues to grow with the number of consults steadily increasing. Physicians, nurses, and pharmacists are all able to request a MoPhE consult for their patients. Pharmacy services’ UI Team Rx program, which is patient centered coordination of care, has become well established in all outpatient pharmacies with the services provided now being documented in UI Health’s electronic health record. This will facilitate data collection as well as the ability to demonstrate positive outcomes related to the services provided.

Development of medication-related clinical care protocols that allow pharmacists to initiate orders to provide timely patient care continues. Protocols approved in 2016 include the neurosurgery pharmacy medication therapy management protocol, the pharmacist adjustment of electronic medication orders protocol, the anti-thrombosis management protocol, the medication therapy management clinic hypertension protocol, the medication therapy management clinic diabetes protocol, and the outpatient pharmacy medical supplies protocol.

Although scheduled for November 2016 completion, the central pharmacy cleanroom renovation is now expected to be finished in the first half of 2017. Once done, it will be state-ofthe-art, and be both USP 797 and USP 800 compliant.

In the ambulatory setting, the Outpatient Oncology Pharmacy transitioned to an infusion pharmacy at the end of 2016, and moved the pharmacy’s oral medication prescription business to one of the other pharmacies.

In November 2016, UI Health underwent its every three-year accreditation survey by The Joint Commission. The organization as a whole did quite well. From a pharmacy perspective, there were no requirements for improvement identified for any of the medication management standards.

In the coming year, pharmacy services hopes to implement a new 340B management system, a tray check system using RFID tagged medications, a web-based software program for investigational drug service, and an IV workflow management system. This will be dependent on funding being available from the hospital. Strategic plans for Hospital Pharmacy Services and Ambulatory Pharmacy Services will be developed as well, building on the strategic planning performed by the Department of Pharmacy Practice.

PRIOR AUTHORIZATION

DONNA CLAY, Director The Prior Authorization Services Group began its contract with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services in 2006. The group is currently comprised of 16 pharmacists, with 12 located in Chicago and four in Springfield, and two technicians. The team develops clinical-based criteria for non-preferred medications and adjudicates prior authorization requests in a consistent and timely manner for Illinois Medicaid Fee-For-Service programs. The Prior Authorization Services Group processes approximately 750 requests daily. In addition, the group provides customer service and education with regard to prior authorization policies, determination appeals, and billing issues for pharmacies and healthcare providers through outreach via phone, fax, and the prior authorization website, www.ilpriorauth.com.

Prior authorization program requirements allow the group to review medication requests on a case-by-case basis, monitor for off-label use, adherence, duplicate therapy, drug interactions, and safety issues as well as ensure therapeutically appropriate, cost-effective medication utilization. Over the past year, the group administered several programs including treatments for hepatitis C and cystic fibrosis, oncology agents, erythropoietin stimulating agents, select HIV medications, Makena, IVIG products, PCSK9 inhibitors, specialty medications, and opioid misuse. Additionally, collaboration with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is ongoing to ensure providers receive appropriate consent for psychotropic medications prescribed to children in the legal custody of DCFS. Prior Authorization also works in conjunction with the Medication Review and Academic Detailing Group administering the Four Prescription Policy and participates in the IL-HFS Bureau of Assistance Hearings appeal process. These programs have helped the State of Illinois ensure appropriate medication use and achieve millions of dollars in savings over the past year.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM FRANK PALOUCEK, Director During the 2015-2016 academic year, the Residency Program had another excellent recruiting season. Noteworthy, all residents from that class obtained a PGY2 residency program. The first postgraduate PGY2 RPD employer survey achieved 100 percent response with very favorable comments for all former PGY1s. The 2016-2017 recruiting efforts were very competitive again with great quality and diversity on geography and interests. The program filled 13 positions PGY1 positions in the match: six from UIC with one from the Rockford campus and then individuals from Auburn University, Butler University, University of Florida, University of Georgia, University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina, and Virginia Commonwealth University. All of the PGY2 residency programs filled their positions as well.

The Residency Program continues to grow with the addition of several new residency positions, including the PGY2 health-systems administration, PGY2 ambulatory care (third position), and the PGY1 community with an emphasis in specialty pharmacy. The program also had its first PGY3 resident in HIV this past year.

The Residency Advisory Committee and the PGY2 residency program directors continued to meet on a regular basis and oversaw the operations of the residency program. Finally, the Residency Teaching Certificate Program continues to grow with more than 50 residents from the Chicago area participating in the program.

ROCKFORD CAMPUS PHARMACY PRACTICE KEVIN RYNN, Vice Dean The Department of Pharmacy Practice on the Rockford campus continues to thrive both in and around its surrounding community. Faculty on the Rockford campus practice at a variety of partner institutions including Crusader Community Health, Mercyhealth Hospital Rockton Ave, OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, SwedishAmerican Hospital, and the UIC Family Medicine’s L.P. Johnson Family Health Center. These individuals specialize in a number of clinical areas including outpatient primary care, anticoagulation, emergency medicine, geriatrics and palliative care, HIV, infectious diseases, internal medicine, and psychiatry. Faculty continue to be invested and support the neighboring community. Students and faculty participated in Health Jam sharing their knowledge of the body, health careers, and healthy living to fifth graders at Nelson Elementary School in Rockford. In addition, faculty have participated in a number of health screenings at area county fairs including Boone, Stephenson, and Winnnebago. These screening events impacted more than 600 lives.

The Rockford campus is home to the Rural Pharmacy Education Program (RPHARM), led by Director Dr. Heidi Olson. The primary goal of RPHARM is to improve pharmacy services available to people residing in rural communities. To achieve the educational goals RPHARM students complete a four-year sequence of interprofessional elective courses with medical students, preparing them to overcome the challenges and meet the specific needs of rural communities. RPHARM students implement a community health improvement project in partnership with a rural medical student in a rural Illinois community, and present these projects at the annual Research Day in Rockford. As part of the RPHARM curriculum, students have multiple opportunities to interact with pharmacists working in different practice settings to learn about the importance of networking,

special challenges and rewards of working in a small community, work-life balance in rural communities, and the pros and cons associated with different practice settings. Students that complete the RPHARM Program earn their PharmD with a concentration in rural pharmacy services. Since 2010, 22 students have graduated from the RPHARM program and an additional 26 students are currently enrolled. As of 2016, 70 percent of RPHARM graduates are currently practicing in rural communities and/or U.S. Department of Health and Human Services designated health professions shortage areas.

Working with the Office of Student Affairs, faculty in Rockford have helped make the UIC College of Pharmacy Summer Pharmacy Institute a great success. This weeklong program allows undergraduate students interested in pharmacy to explore and learn more about a variety of areas within the profession. The program is extremely competitive with applicants from throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Drs. Erin Carson, Megan Fleischman, Alice Hemenway, Laura Meyer-Junco, Heidi Olson, Marianne Pop, and Chris Schriever worked with Ken Smith, director of Student Affairs, to provide an in-depth orientation to the profession. It has been a great opportunity to highlight UIC, the Rockford Campus, and the profession as a whole. Continuing with the Promote the Profession theme, Drs. Marianne Pop and Alice Hemenway also worked with the Office of Student Affairs this year, presenting Exploring Pharmacy Careers at the UC Davis Pre-Health Conference to more than 100 prospective students. Department faculty in Rockford are dedicated to attracting the most talented students to UIC as well as supporting current students and the surrounding communities.

SECTION OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES PHARMACOTHERAPY LARRY DANZIGER AND KEITH RODVOLD,

Section Co-Chairs

The Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy has provided a wide range of scholarly, teaching, and clinical services to the university and Chicagoland area since its inception in 1996. Co-directors Larry Danziger and Keith Rodvold continue to provide leadership and vision for the section.

The section provides clinical pharmacy services to UI Health in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Members of the section provide care to patients in the Family Center for Infectious Diseases, a variety of HIV Outreach Clinics throughout the city, the John H. Stroger Cook County Hospital, and the Ruth M. Rothstein Core Center.

In addition to patient care services, the section maintains its commitment to educating future clinician-scientists.

The section has one of the largest and longest-standing infectious diseases pharmacy fellowship training programs in the United States. To date, over 65 infectious diseases fellows have completed the program under the leadership and expertise of Drs. Danziger and Rodvold.

Beyond its academic mission, the Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy remains highly active in research for both clinical and basic sciences. The section is involved in Phases I through IV clinical trials of existing and investigational antimicrobial compounds. The Microbiology Research Laboratory (UIC-MRL), managed by the section, explores activity of novel

compounds, studies approaches to improve the use of both new and old antimicrobials, and evaluates new pharmacotherapeutic options for the treatment of antibiotic resistant infections.

Federal and pharmaceutical industry funding continue to support the research and scholarly activities of the section. Dr. Rodvold was recently the chairperson of the Special Emphasis Panel for Pharmacokinetics and a member of the steering committee for the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG). ARLG (https://arlg.org) is an initiative funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Sixty-two million dollars, allocated over a period of six and a half years, is available to support clinical research in antibacterial resistance. The ARLG is tasked with developing and prioritizing a clinical research agenda and designing, implementing, and conducting clinical studies to address the growing public health threat of antibacterial resistance.

Additionally, Dr. Rodvold received research funding from the National Institute of Health and the ARLG to conduct a phase I study to evaluate pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety/tolerability of two dosing regimens of oral fosfomycin tromethamine in healthy adult subjects (NCT02570074). Dr. Rodvold was also funded by Theravance Biopharma Inc. to conduct a pharmacokinetic research study of telavancin in normal body weight and obese (classes I, II, and III) healthy adult subjects (NCT02753855).

Dr. Danziger is the principle investigator of the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center National Institute of Standards and Technology grant, which works with businesses to gain improvements in the areas of leadership, strategy, customer engagement, operations, and workforce. IMEC is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Commerce and NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership centers. The grant has received $8,108,000 to date.

Dr. Rodvold joined Drs. John Rotschafer from the University of Minnesota and David Andes from the University of Wisconsin as editors of a new textbook, Antibiotic Pharmacodynamics, published by Humana Press. Additionally, Dr. Rodvold is finalizing the fourth edition of his well-received Drug Interactions in Infectious Diseases textbook.

As part of the Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy, Drs. Renata Smith, Rodrigo Burgos, Melissa Badowski, and Thomas Chiampas contribute to the development of the profession through scholarly, teaching, research, and service activities in the area of HIV pharmacotherapy. Drs. Smith and Burgos serve as co-directors of the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists accredited PGY2 residency in HIV. The section’s HIV pharmacotherapy services provide care for approximately 1,200 HIV positive individuals in a variety of settings within the university. They provide service to seven outpatient clinics, which include a main campus HIV clinic and infectious disease clinics in six HIV outreach clinics in the Chicago neighborhoods with the highest incidence of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. Furthermore, the section’s HIV pharmacotherapy group provides care for 26 correctional facilities within the Illinois Department of Corrections system via an HIV telemedicine clinic.

The HIV Telemedicine Clinic began in July 2010 and provides over 1,000 clinic visits per year. In 2013, the telemedicine group received a technology award by the American Academy of HIV Medicine and the Institute for Technology in Health Care recognizing the innovative use of technology in the HIV care setting. This unique environment facilitates a positive research and learning experience and allows experiential students, pharmacy residents, and fellows to be involved in the future of medical care.

Educational outreach has also led to the section’s involvement in the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center, located within the Jane Addams College of Social work. Through these activities, the section provides educational information and programming to pharmacists in a six state area about infectious diseases

pharmacotherapy as it relates to HIV infection. Drs. Badowski, Smith, and Chiampas developed elective courses on case-based infectious diseases, management of the HIV patient, exploration of telemedicine in pharmacy practice, and concepts in drug development.

Dr. Blake Max has been instrumental in the development of the interprofessional collaborative practice in HIV Care Course, an elective course for students in different professional programs such as advanced practice nursing, dentistry, medicine, nutrition, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and public health. The program provides students from many disciplines foundational knowledge of HIV care and develop the ability to work as members of an inteprofessional collaborative health care team.

The section continues to maintain its long-term relationships the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center and John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Drs. Gail Itokazu and Robert Glowack provide inpatient infectious disease services at this public urban teaching hospital in Chicago that delivers primary, specialty, and tertiary healthcare services to the five million residents of Cook County. Since 2011, Dr. Itokazu, along with David Schwartz, MD, chairman of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, serve as consultants to the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to expand Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs throughout Illinois. Dr. Blake provides HIV pharmacotherapy services at the CORE center, an outpatient medical facility in the Illinois Medical District.

The future of the Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy, builds on its history as it continues to grow and serve as leader in current aspects of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy including antimicrobial stewardship both locally and throughout the state of Illinois. The section recently partnered with the Illinois Department of Public Health as a co-sponsor of the Illinois Antimicrobial Stewardship Summit programs and coordinates a quarterly meeting of infectious disease pharmacy practitioners from throughout the Chicagoland area.

Finally, the section is also excited to announce the addition of three new faculty members. Drs. Eric Wenzler and Zack Bulman are tenure track additions and Dr. Sarah Michienzi adds to the HIV faculty on the clinical track. Dr. Wenzler received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Ohio Northern University. He completed PGY1 and PGY2 residency in infectious diseases at The Ohio State University before coming to UIC for a three-year post-doctoral research fellowship in infectious diseases pharmacotherapy, which he will finish in June of 2017. Dr. Bulman received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Buffalo and will complete a two-year research fellowship in infectious diseases pharmacology at the University of Buffalo in June as well. Dr. Michienzi received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Wayne State University and completed her PGY1 residency at St. Josephs Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Michigan, before completing a two-year Advanced Residency in HIV at UIC.

SOLID ORGAN TRANSPLANT TEAM MAYA CAMPARA, Team Leader The Solid Organ Transplant Team underwent major changes in 2016.

After 20 years of service, the Solid Organ Transplant PGY2 Residency Program Director Dr. James Thielke retired. During his term as director, Dr. Thielke graduated 13 PGY2 residents from the program. He created a lasting, living legacy that will transition to his former trainees Drs. Mia Schmiedeskamp and Jamie Benken, who will serve as residency program director and assistant residency program director after his departure.

In 2016, the team welcomed its 14 PGY2 resident who joined the transplant fellow, now in her second year of fellowship training. Both trainees are actively engaged in extracurricular activities with local and national professional associations. The team’s PGY2 currently serves as the trainee member of the Illinois Transplant Pharmacist Association. The team’s fellow serves as a member of the Organ Donation Workgroup of the American Society of Transplantation.

Academically, transplant team members continue to coordinate the Advanced Transplant Therapeutics Elective (PMPR347) that is now in its fourth year. During 2016, students covered a variety of transplant topics presented by Doctors of Pharmacy from different Chicagobased transplant programs. Students also participated in a vigorous debate on whether the new LCP formulation of tacrolimus should be added to the hospital’s drug formulary. Finally, students organized an organ donation awareness event as part of AST Organ Donation Awareness Challenge.

also continues to coordinate weekly, multidisciplinary transplant team conference that has become a popular discussion forum for all transplantrelated specialties at UI Health.

This year, the American Transplant Congress was held in Boston. At this meeting, two team members were invited to speak at a session titled the Transplant Pharmacy in the 21st Century. The team also exhibited nine research abstracts at this meeting. At the 2016 American College of Clinical Pharmacy Annual Meeting and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Midyear meeting, team members presented several posters showcasing the work of pharmacy residents and pharmacy students who participated in the team’s summer research boot camp. Transplant team members continue to accept invitations to share their knowledge and experience via various national and international platforms. Most recently, a member of the team traveled to Manila, Philippines to present a series of transplant pharmacotherapy lectures as part of the ACCP’s Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Practice Series.

The transplant team stays involved with various local, regional, and national transplant and pharmacy groups. At the college level, team members serve as faculty advisers to Rho Chi Society and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. The team continues to maintain leadership roles within the Illinois Transplant Pharmacists Association. On the national level, the team is represented at the 2017 ACCP Planning Committee and the ACCP Research Institute’s Practice Based Research Network Community Advisory Panel. Team members also participate in various committees and initiatives within the AST Transplant Pharmacy Community of Practice.

Department Research Highlights The Department of Pharmacy Practice is fortunate to have a strong and diverse research program. Brief descriptions of selected department faculty research programs are highlighted below.

Larry Danziger, PharmD Dr. Danziger’s research interests center on surgical infectious disease, the unusual properties of antimicrobial agents, and pharmacological aspects of the patients with infectious diseases. Dr. Danziger is the principle investigator of the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) National Institute of Standards and Technology grant, which works with businesses to gain improvements in the areas of leadership, strategy, customer engagement, operations, and workforce. IMEC is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Commerce and NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership centers. The grant has received $8,108,000 to date.

James H. Fischer, PharmD Dr. Fisher’s research efforts in 2016 focused on two areas: the pharmacokinetics of new oncology drugs and advancement of a regional human subject protection program. Dr. Fisher is collaborating with the UIC Cancer Center in conducting pre-clinical studies and phase I clinical trials. During 2016, these activities involved pharmacokinetic design and analysis for three ongoing phase I trials and pre-clinical studies for two agents.

Ajna Hamidovic, PharmD, MS Dr. Ajna Hamidovic’s Clinical and Experimental Drug Addiction Research (CEDAR) lab focuses on developing novel pharmacologic treatments for drug addiction. She leads a multi-disciplinary team of drug formulation, toxicology, pharmacokinetic, and clinical investigators to advance the development and regulatory approval of intranasal insulin from the ground up as a novel therapy for smoking cessation. In addition to working as a clinical investigator with the smoking population, Dr. Hamidovic also studies cocaine use disorder patients. She is currently developing a neurophysiologic assay to capture responses to pharmacologic treatments. The overarching goal is to alleviate disease processes brought upon by repeated cocaine use, for which currently there is no FDA-approved treatment.

Jennie B. Jarrett, PharmD, BCPS, MMedEd Dr. Jarrett was added to the tenure-track faculty in December of 2016. Dr. Jarrett’s initial work at the college has highlighted unique educational offerings within the college, such as the international programs,

the interprofessional rural track in Rockford, and residency on-call experiences. Overall, her research focuses on innovative educational and practice models across the spectrum of professional and graduate pharmacy as well as medical education for increased collaboration and improved quality of care. By using the same language for universal frameworks of education in both medical and pharmacy education and training, interprofessional relationships can be strengthened through mutual understanding as well as progression towards fixed-outcome education and training. Entrustable professional activities have been described in the medical education literature as a framework for assessment to support learners in their development toward fulfilling future professional roles. Specifically, EPAs are a unit of measure of the unique duties of a specific profession when performing their work. Ahead, Dr. Jarrett will be working closely with experiential leadership and faculty to implement the utilization of EPAs and test this new outcomes-based assessment tool.

Hyunyoung (Young) Jeong, PharmD, PhD Dr. Jeong’s lab has been studying different factors determining drug efficacy and toxicity. Research encompasses different areas of drug metabolism, preclinical and clinical pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, and gut microbiota. Current research focuses are on mechanisms underlying altered hepatic drug metabolism in pregnant women, molecular basis of inter-individual variability in CYP2D6-mediated drug metabolism, roles of gut microbiota in hepatic drug metabolism and toxicity, and antiviral and antibiotic drug development. First, Dr. Jeong’s lab has been working to identify factor(s) responsible for altered drug metabolism during pregnancy and understand how they work. Medication use in pregnancy is prevalent because of pre-existing medical conditions or newly developing disorders. However, it remains unclear how pregnancy influences drug pharmacokinetics, especially hepatic drug metabolism. Results from her research can provide a basis for developing dosing guidelines for pregnant women. Secondly, the Jeong lab has been identifying and characterizing potential contributors to large inter-individual variability in CYP2D6-mediated drug metabolism. While genetic polymorphisms of CYP2D6 have been studied extensively, large portion of CYP2D6 variability remains unexplained. Dr. Jeong’s lab has also recently embarked investigating how differential gut microbiota can impact hepatic functions, especially drug elimination and bioactivation. Lastly, the Jeong lab has been involved in collaborative projects for the development of antiviral and antibiotic drugs by characterizing preclinical pharmacokinetic profiles of drug candidates. These studies should provide better understanding of inter-individual variability in drug response and toxicity, and thus a basis to achieve optimal drug therapy.

Jeremy Johnson, PharmD, PhD Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on the evaluation of phytochemicals from dietary sources for cancer chemoprevention. The first project focused on elucidating the mechanism of action of carnosic acid and carnosol from the Mediterranean herb rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). This work has led to an understanding of how each of these individual diterpenes promote degradation of the androgen receptor for prostate cancer. The second project focused on elucidating the mechanism of individual xanthones from the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) fruit for disrupting androgen receptor function in prostate cancer. The project has led to night natural xanthones and five semi-synthetic xanthones being evaluated for androgen receptor degradation. Furthermore, this research has provided data that is being used to establish structure-activity relationship studies for xanthone induced androgen receptor degradation for castration resistant prostate cancer.

A third project area is underway evaluating the role of synthetic and natural food preservatives and their role in preventing colitis and inflammatory bowel disease. As a result of the research project on evaluating Mediterranean herbs, the American Cancer Society awarded Dr. Johnson a four-year $720,000 Research Scholar grant to evaluate the cancer chemoprevention properties of carnosol.

Gail Mahady, PhD, RPh Osteogenic effects of dietary supplements in transgenic medaka. Osteoporosis is a major public health concern, characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures. Bone-loss results from an imbalance of the bone-forming activity of osteoblasts and the resorption activity of osteoclasts.

Thus, in addition to preventing or reducing bone resorption, stimulation of bone formation is an essential component of treating osteoporosis, bone trauma, and filling osseous defects often required after surgery. The anthocyanins (a subclass of flavonoids) have also been proposed as being potentially more active than other dietary flavonoids, but have not been a central focus of previous research. For this project the researchers are using novel transgenic teleost fish (medaka, Oryzias latipes) to investigate the effects of anthocyanins and other dietary supplement on osteoblastogenesis in osterix:mCherry and osx:CFPNTR double transgenic medaka. The overall objectives of this proposal are to establish the activity and molecular mechanisms involved in improving bone mineral density in transgenic medaka using in vivo imaging and systems biology.

Additionally specific aims include to determine the effects and mechanism(s) of dietary anthocyanins on osteoblast formation and bone mineralization using osterix:mCherry medaka and osx:CFP-NTR transgenic medaka. Researchers are using very novel double transgenic medaka models recently developed specifically for osteoporosis research. Additionally, the project seeks to establish the effects and mechanism by which the anthocyanins or aglycones reduce bone resorption and osteoclastogenesis in a triple transgenic rankl:HSE:CFP medaka model. Researchers will use in vivo bioluminescent imaging to investigate the mechanisms by which these compounds protect osteoblasts against apoptosis, enhance osteoblast formation and reduce osteoclastogenesis. Dr. Mahady and her team hypothesize these compounds will enhance osteoblast formation and reduce osteoclastogenesis via a mechanism that involves the alteration of the expression of mRNA of osteocalcin, NFkB, col10, runx2, sox9a, sparc, and osterix.

New methods for treating osteoporosis, bone trauma and other diseases of bone remodeling are of great clinical significance for both older adults as well as younger patients with spinal cord injury. The researchers anticipate that dietary anthocyanins will both stimulate bone growth and reduce bone resorption in

these medaka models, and that a clear mechanism of action will be formulated from the resultant data. Considering the safety of these dietary compounds, the data generated from these studies will be used as the foundation for translational studies and clinical trials for osteoporosis, stress fractures and bone trauma.

Since the 1980’s, interest in understanding of the roles of natural compounds in cancer prevention has been a major theme in cancer research. Curiosity of the carotenoids, including beta-carotene and related compounds such as lycopene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin and vitamin A, began early leading to clinical trials starting in the 1990’s. In contrast, the interest in vitamin D has emerged more recently. Epidemiological studies indicate a clear picture of cancer prevention by carotenoid-containing fruits and vegetables, notably in cancers derived from epithelial tissues. In this work, Dr. Mahady investigates the effects of traditional medicines and dietary supplements in a wide range of cancer cell lines.

Research uses 12 epithelial cancer cell lines and one novel bioluminescent cell line MCF-7-luc-D6, a luciferase expressing adenocarcinoma cell line that can be assessed by novel 2-D imaging, which show treatment effects visually. Research will also look at the molecular mechanism of action and determine global mRNA and protein expression profiles of the cells after treatment using very novel RNA-seq and mass spectrometry based proteomics analysis. Development of safe dietary therapies such as carotenoids, vitamin A, and vitamin D for epithelial-cell based cancers, while high-risk research, would be transformative and change the current treatment and prevention paradigms. The results would also be very translational in that these dietary compounds have a long history of safe use and thus could be quickly moved into animal or human studies. First Analysis Institute for Integrative Medicine funds this work.

Keith Rodvold, PharmD Dr. Rodvold’s research focuses on clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anti-infective agents, with a focus on drug penetration and disposition in special populations. Dr. Rodvold was recently the chairperson of the Special Emphasis Panel for Pharmacokinetics and a member of the steering committee for the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG).

ARLG (https://arlg.org) is an initiative funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. Sixty-two million dollars, allocated over a period of six and a half years, is available to support clinical research in antibacterial resistance. ARLG is tasked with developing and prioritizing a clinical research agenda and designing, implementing, and conducting clinical studies to address the growing public health threat of antibacterial resistance. Dr. Rodvold has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health and the ARLG to conduct a phase I study to evaluate pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and safety/tolerability of two dosing regimens of oral fosfomycin tromethamine in healthy adult subjects (NCT02570074). Dr. Rodvold was also funded by Theravance Biopharma Inc. to conduct a pharmacokinetic research study of telavancin in normal body weight and obese (classes I, II, and III) healthy adult subjects (NCT02753855).
