Message from the Head -- Janet P. Engle The UIC Department of Pharmacy Practice had another productive and successful year in 2015. Guided by the Department’s Strategic Plan, we continued to grow, operationalized our strategic plan and met our stated goals.

A new initiative for the department was to engage in and promote the department, faculty and activities via social media. I’m pleased to share that the department now has a strong presence on social media. Check us out at:

The residency and fellowship program had another strong year.

In 2015, we began recruiting for three new residency positions: PGY2 Administration, PGY2 Ambulatory Care (third position) and PGY1 Community, with an emphasis in Specialty Pharmacy. The Resident Teaching Certificate Program was offered to all UIC residents as well as approximately 40 other residents in the Chicago area. To supplement the residents’ noon report, the department head provided leadership curriculum while the director of pharmacy covered pharmacy administration topics. The Residency Advisory Committee met on a regular basis and oversaw the operations of the residency program. We also held our annual residency retreat to discuss and further improve the program.

The Department Advisory Committee, an elected committee consisting of faculty and administration, met on a monthly basis in 2015. One of the projects completed was the development of guidelines for clinical fellowship training programs in our department. The guidelines help guide the growth of our departmental fellowship programs.

Our faculty continued to engage in cutting-edge research. Dr. Young Jeong secured her second RO1 grant. Several other faculty members received large grants to support their research. Our faculty members are world-renowned and contribute new knowledge through their research programs. Competitive research funding continued to increase as our faculty members received funding in the competitive environment. (More information on faculty research projects is provided in this report.)

In 2015, the department recruited for several faculty positions in Chicago and Rockford. We hired faculty in the specialty areas of adult internal medicine, drug information, emergency medicine and ambulatory care, including medication therapy management and family medicine. Dr. Rob Didomenico, clinical pharmacist in cardiology and chair of the curriculum committee, was promoted to clinical professor. All promoted clinical faculty now receive multi-year contracts dependent on rank.

Several years ago, the Department of Pharmacy Practice teamed up with the Department of Pharmacy Systems, Outcomes and Policy to establish the Center for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomic Research (CPR), an interdisciplinary research unit of the College of Pharmacy. In 2015, the department continued to collaborate with CPR to provide research assistance to clinical faculty.

Our faculty members continued to be active in international pharmacy in 2015.

Faculty members were invited to present lectures at international meetings in China, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Faculty members also gave lectures and recitations to pharmacy students in Hong Kong and Malta.

The department also hosted many international pharmacists from partner schools for short-term visits to learn more about clinical pharmacy. Director Andy Donnelly helped coordinate two visits for directors of hospital pharmacy from China to learn about clinical pharmacy services and education-program development in the United States. Christina Mactal Haaf and Jennifer Pham continued to serve as the UIC Coordinators for the collaborative degree programs, which the college established with the University of Hong Kong and University of Malta.

Several of our faculty members were awarded adjunct faculty status at the University of Malta to recognize their contributions to the program. Nancy Shapiro continued to serve as the program coordinator for the “Contemporary Pharmacy Practice and Education,” our one-month summer international program for students and pharmacists from Taiwan, Hong Kong and other areas of southeast Asia. To give our students the opportunity to experience pharmacy practice in another country, we partnered with Siriraj Hospital and Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, where one student completed an elective Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotation.

The department’s mentoring and faculty development programs continued to grow in 2015. Forty-six faculty members now have assigned mentors. Since the debut of the mentoring and faculty development programs in 2008, 16 clinical faculty members have been promoted to clinical associate or clinical professor. In addition, seven tenure-track faculty members have successfully pursued promotion to associate professor or professor.

In 2015, faculty development programs recruited outside experts for speaking engagements and to meet with faculty in their area of expertise to provide more targeted assistance. The mid-career faculty development program continued in 2015 for the midlevel and senior clinical faculty in order to increase opportunities for scholarship in the department. One aspect of the program gives promoted or close-to-promoted faculty the option of requesting a four- to 12-week break to pursue or complete a scholarly activity, such as a developing a research project or writing a paper. Several faculty members took advantage of this option and were able to complete manuscripts and/or research projects during their time away from service.

In addition to faculty development seminars and workshops, the department also held a faculty poster and networking event that recognized departmental faculty who had received significant awards. The event also showcased faculty posters presented at local, national and international meetings throughout the year. Not only did the event give faculty the opportunity to network, but it also allowed them to celebrate their successes. An abstract book was developed with descriptions of all of the posters highlighted at the event. In addition to the poster and award event, the department also organized a summer networking mixer BBQ for department faculty.

The department also continued to host “Partners in Practice” networking functions for faculty, preceptors, donors and alumni. During these functions, we celebrate partnerships with our preceptors who support our educational programs and give us the gift of their knowledge, time and energy with our students; recognize our generous donors who make many of our activities and scholarships possible; and thank our alumni who continually give back to the department in a number of ways. Over the years, our preceptors have donated approximately $100,000 to the college, and for that we are very grateful. A list of our preceptors is included in this report. We held events at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting in San Diego and at the U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago when the Chicago White Sox took on the Chicago Cubs. We had great attendance at both events and plan to continue hosting these functions.

The departmental Educational Policy Committee (EPC), under the leadership of Associate Head Kristen Goliak, continued to meet on a regular basis in 2015. During the year, EPC focused on the curricular revision that begins in the fall of 2016. As in previous years, EPC continued to track scores on all faculty members’ teaching evaluations and peer evaluations. The department is committed to ensuring that we provide the best teaching possible. Each faculty member also receives feedback and evaluations. The department EPC also tracks teaching assignments to assist the department with teaching loads and determining who is in need of teaching opportunities, particularly when the college’s new curriculum is implemented. The committee also reviews concerns that arise as part of the fall and spring course coordinator meetings and addresses the issues as appropriate.

Providing the highest level of pharmaceutical care to patients that seek care from our seven ambulatory pharmacies continued to be an important focus for our department in 2015. Three clinical faculty members who completed community pharmacy residencies and have expertise in community pharmacy continued to enhance clinical services provided at the Wood Street Pharmacy.

Two of these faculty members also continued to provide care to underserved patients at CommunityHealth, a free clinic on the west side of Chicago run completely by volunteers. We continued to implement marketing strategies for the pharmacies, including publishing a blog supported by the Drug Information Group, maintaining a presence on Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets, and developing new marketing collateral for our pharmacies.

Our ambulatory pharmacies and department faculty continued to actively provide flu shots to the university community via our pharmacies, as well as through our partnership with the State of Illinois. For the 10th year, department faculty, residents and P4 students worked together to administer the flu vaccine to as many eligible state employees and retirees as possible. Almost 1,300 vaccinations were administered during the 2015 flu fall season as part of this program.

Associate Head for Education Kristen Goliak

Throughout 2015, the Department Educational Policy Committee (EPC) met several times to discuss and review various curriculum proposals, particularly in regards to the therapeutics series. Members of the committee included Kristen Goliak (Chair), Sheila Allen, Leslie Briars, Lauren Dandeles, Frank Paloucek, Louise Parent-Stevens, Nancy Shapiro and Eljim Tesoro. We commend the team for their efforts and the guidance they provided to the department and to the chair of the college’s EPC committee, Rob DiDomenico.

Many of our faculty members are active in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). In 2015, several faculty members had leadership positions. While we could not feature all of our 2015 accomplishments in this report, these highlights speak to the great contributions made by the department to the college, university and the profession of pharmacy, both locally and worldwide. Many thanks to the faculty, staff, residents and fellows for their hard work in achieving the goals in our strategic plan and bringing our mission statement to life.

The committee also reviewed feedback and revised a student recitation leader evaluation form. Several suggestions and improvements were made to the original form. The college’s Assessment Committee also reviewed the evaluation form. The form was pilot tested in a few courses during the spring and fall semesters.

In 2015, we continued to track all faculty members’ teaching evaluations, peer evaluations and teaching assignments. We continue to update these on a regular basis to ensure that faculty members receive the feedback and evaluations. This will also assist the department in management teaching loads and determining need for teaching opportunities, particularly when we implement the college’s new curriculum.

In February and October, we held course coordinator meetings for both core and elective courses to allow department coordinators to have an open discussion about various issues they were facing. Topics covered included course registration for students, off-cycle students, international students, TA issues, recitation issues, quiz and exam proctoring, consistency between campuses and professionalism issues, meeting attendance policy for students and class attendance at lectures. These meetings will continue to be offered to departmental course coordinators each semester.

The Resident Teaching Certificate Committee met throughout the spring and revised the program for the 2015-2016 residency class. The program expanded from last year and grew to include 51 PGY1 residents in the program representing eight PGY1 programs and three PGY1 Community programs. The committee is proud to offer this program to so many Chicago-area residents and has received positive feedback from both the residents and their program directors.

Associate Head for Research

In 2015, the department moved forward on implementing goals from the 2014 Research Mission. We made progress in a number of areas, including facilitating research opportunities for clinical track faculty, expanding the faculty mentoring program, assessing research resource needs and advancing new faculty recruitment.

To help advance the department’s clinical research efforts, we furthered two campus-wide initiatives: launching an electronic submission portal for the Institutional Review Board and improving access to the UIHHSS Health Information Repository. To support recruitment, we progressed on expanding the department’s current programs in pharmacokinetics, pharmacogenomics, drug metabolism and drug development, and also worked to establish pedagogy as a future area of research excellence.

We invite alumni familiar with the department’s former laboratories to visit our new state-of-the-art facilities. The renovated facilities are located on the first floor of the college and encompass the previous Clinical Research Laboratory and “Cowpen” space. These facilities give faculty members the capabilities to support the department’s research efforts in biopharmaceutical analysis, drug development, drug metabolism, molecular biology and pharmacogenomics.

Department of Pharmacy Practice Mission Statement The Department of Pharmacy Practice is an academic department within the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy, Chicago and Rockford campuses. The department is also a service unit that provides pharmacy services within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences Center and affiliated sites. Among the most comprehensive units of its type in the United States, the department is composed of faculty and staff who are teachers, scholars and/ or practitioners.

Members of the department continue a tradition of exemplary service through the following activities.

• Educating and training Doctor of Pharmacy students, undergraduate and graduate students, postPharmD residents and fellows, and practicing pharmacists, to become nationally and/or internationally recognized for their leadership, knowledge and competence in practice, research and/or teaching roles.

• Providing innovative pharmacy services across the continuum of care to the diverse patient populations of the University of Illinois Hospital and affiliated sites.

• Creating through research, and disseminating in the biomedical literature, new scientific knowledge about the effective, safe, and economical use of medications with the intent of improving the rational use of drugs in patients and in society.

• Collaborating with other health science professionals in teaching, service and research activities.

Department Spotlight International Outreach and Programs Jennifer Pham and Christina Haaf, Coordinators for the International Collaborative Clinical Pharmacy Programs In 2015, the UIC College of Pharmacy continued its collaboration with the University of Hong Kong’s Master of Clinical Pharmacy program and the University of Malta’s Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy programs, respectively established in 2013 and 2014. For both programs, the college contributed several teaching activities, including sharing pre-recorded lectures, conducting live and videoconference case-based teaching, and evaluating student case presentations.

In April 2015, Christina Haaf and Jennifer Pham visited the University of Malta to conduct on-site clinical activities, including didactic teaching, evaluation of student journal club and case presentations, and participation in hospital physician rounds. In addition, Alan Lau and Scott Benken taught the renal and critical care/cardiovascular courses at the University of Hong Kong in September 2015 as a part of their Master of Clinical Pharmacy program.

In May and October 2015, the college hosted Clinical Pharmacy Services and Education Development Programs for pharmacy directors from various provinces in China. These two-week educational programs included an overview of contemporary pharmacy services with an emphasis on clinical pharmacy service development, provision and management. Emphasis was also placed on experiential education, clinical skill development and practice role modeling. In addition, department faculty members were invited to give presentations at several international meetings.

The college continued to collaborate with China Medical University in Taiwan on a month-long summer program. The purpose of this program was to nurture interest in clinical pharmacy practice and education. The program was conducted by 30 pharmacy faculty members and included topics on common disease states in various inpatient and ambulatory settings, clinical skill enhancement, description of unique clinical pharmacy practice models and patient case-based teaching. In 2015, the program was expanded to 49 students from 11 universities, including students from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, China, Korea, the Philippines and Turkey. Nancy Shapiro coordinated the program.

These collaborations have created novel clinical education programs for international pharmacy students and pharmacists, allowing them to increase their clinical skills and knowledge. The increased understanding of clinical practice in the United States may help shape their future academic and professional development.

Telemedicine Melissa Badowski, Clinical Pharmacist, HIV Telemedicine

Dr. Melissa Badowski, Dr. Thomas Chiampas and Dr. Juliana Chan are clinical pharmacists who oversee the clinical pharmacy program for the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) Telemedicine Clinic at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System. Since its inception in July 2010, the IDOC Telemedicine Clinic has provided dedicated health care to prisoners infected with HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Previously, this population was considered underserved. Dr. Badowski and Dr. Chiampas serve the HIV population while Dr. Chan provides pharmaceutical care to patients with liver disorders, primarily focusing on HCV. In addition to providing quality and standardized health care, the IDOC Telemedicine Clinic has served as an academic clinical rotation site for pharmacy and medical students. It has also served as a site for numerous research endeavors and educational opportunities. In 2015, Dr. Badowski and Dr. Chan were involved in the development of ACCP guidelines for the provision of comprehensive medical management in tele-health and other distant-care delivery environments.

Personalized Medicine Service John Garofalo, Senior Associate Director for Clinical Services

Led by an interdisciplinary team, the Personalized Medicine Service is a program that focuses on bringing cutting-edge genetics laboratory research to the bedside. Working in collaboration with the departments of pathology and medicine, pharmacists participating in the program have used patients’ genetic data to assist in the dosing of warfarin since 2012 and clopidogrel since 2013. The program has reduced 30-day and 90-day readmissions due to therapy-related complications. This translates to an estimated average savings of approximately $2,000 per patient managed by the service.

In 2015, the program was honored as a finalist for the ASHP Award for Excellence in Medication-Use Safety.

Current research efforts focus on studying variations in the CYP2D6 enzyme with the goal of leveraging the results to improve pain management in the sickle cell population. Other future expansion of the service includes behavioral health and oncology medication consultations.

The Personalized Medicine Service continues to be a training site for pharmacy students, residents and fellows. A PGY2 residency program in pharmacogenetics has existed for the last three years.

HIV Pharmacotherapy Services Rodrigo Burgos, Clinical Pharmacist, HIV

Clinicians and scholars in the Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy provide care and expertise to HIV-positive individuals at seven outpatient clinics in Chicago. These locations include an on-campus medical center clinic and six outreach clinics in neighborhoods with some of the highest incidences of HIV and sexually transmitted infections in the city.

Section members also provide HIV pharmacotherapy services at two facilities in Cook County: the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center, one of the largest outpatient HIV treatment centers in the country, and at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, where two impatient services are exclusively dedicated to serving HIV-positive individuals. Pharmacotherapy services are also provided in a multidisciplinary telemedicine clinic that cares for HIV-positive inmates in 26 correctional facilities within Illinois.

In 2015, we implemented a provision of HIV pharmacotherapy at a methadone treatment facility. This addresses HIV in a setting and population that has traditionally been ignored and difficult to reach.

In addition to providing HIV and infectious diseases pharmacotherapy, Dr. Renata Smith, Dr. Rodrigo Burgos, Dr. Melissa Badowski, Dr. Thomas Chiampas, Dr. Blake Max, Dr. Gail Itokazu and Dr. Robert Glowacki were involved in several scholarly activities in 2015. At the university level, faculty members updated infectious diseases courses for a new college-wide curriculum; participated in the development of an HIV inter-professional education initiative with other colleges; and created an HIV elective course to better expose students to the disease and its management — all while continuing to fulfill their teaching responsibilities at the College of Pharmacy and other colleges within the university.

At a regional level, faculty members served as speakers for World AIDS Week at the University of Illinois and Rosalind Franklin University. They also provided and coordinated multiple continuing education programs in Illinois and Michigan through the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC). At a national level, members were involved in developing continuing education modules for specialty pharmacists in the area of HIV; spoke at the Armada Specialty Pharmacy Summit 2015 on the pharmacist’s role in addressing the increasing demand for HIV specialists; and founded and chaired an HIV practice and research network through the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

The group has a longstanding history of training students, residents and fellows in the areas of HIV and infectious diseases. Well before its accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 2013, the HIV Pharmacotherapy Residency began training residents in 2005. In 2015, in keeping with the innovative nature of these HIV experts, the ASHP Foundation awarded the HIV Pharmacotherapy Residency Program a grant for the implementation of a pharmacist-led HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis clinic, which is now in progress.

Specialty Pharmacy JoAnn Stubbings, Assistant Director, Specialty Pharmacy Services

Established in 2012, UI Health SPS accepts referrals for specialty medications from the outpatient clinics and works on behalf of the clinics and patients to facilitate access to their necessary medications. We have a team of 10 fulltime employees who work with insurance companies to secure approval for the drugs and work with the Medication Assistance Program to help patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Once access is secured, we dispense the medication and schedule a time for the medication to be delivered to the patient or to be picked up, and we provide medication education and training.

Then we contact the patient on a monthly basis to monitor their medication usage and schedule the next delivery. Our specialty pharmacy manages 600 patients from ten specialty clinics at UI Health. These include Cardiology/

Lipid Disorders; Gastroenterology/Inflammatory Bowel Disease/Crohn’s Disease; Liver/Hepatitis C; Multiple Sclerosis; Pediatric Endocrinology/Growth Hormone Deficiency; Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension; Rheumatology; Sickle Cell Disease; Transplant and Women’s Health/Infertility.

Department Section Updates

UI Health SPS reached several milestones in 2015. In September, we were the seventh health system in the country to achieve URAC specialty pharmacy accreditation for the Wood Street Pharmacy. We submitted 847 prior authorizations, had 150 new treatment initiations, and provided medication assistance to all patients in need. Our customer satisfaction was 100%, and patient adherence to specialty medication as measured by the medication possession ratio was 93%. The time from prior approval submission to approval was 1.75 days, and the approval rate was over 80%, which helped facilitate patient access to medications.

Total SPS revenue in 2015 was $40 million, an increase of 20% over 2015. We recruited our first PGY-1 community resident in specialty pharmacy. We served as a training site for twelve P4 pharmacy students, three PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents, and five independent study pharmacy students. Our pharmacists and students gave national presentations on specialty pharmacy and their therapeutic areas of expertise. We served on national committees and collaborated on initiatives that will help shape specialty pharmacy research and training.

Nazia Babul and Jennifer Marcelo, Clinical Pharmacists

In the year ahead, we plan to firmly establish UI Health SPS as a center of excellence for health-system based specialty pharmacy. We hope to train the next generation of specialty pharmacists as we expose more pharmacy students and residents to the health system model. Most importantly, we will continue to work closely with the clinical pharmacists embedded in the specialty clinics to ensure safe and appropriate utilization of specialty medications, minimize waste, improve outcomes, and lower cost.

Patient Care Elective: MTM 390 Tiffany Scott Horton, Operations Coordinator, Medication Therapy Management Clinic

The Medication Therapy Management Clinic (MTMC) offers a special project elective (MTM 390) to third-year pharmacy students. Typically, five students are selected through an application process for both the fall and spring semesters.

The course allows students to receive hands-on clinical experience by evaluating a patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) for medication changes that occur during UIH inpatient hospital stays and outpatient clinic visits.

Through this medication-reconciliation process, students can divert prescribing errors by ensuring a prescription is written when indicated by a physicians’ note; further, if a prescription was written, students can ensure that it is forwarded to the appropriate pharmacy. This elective experience helps students gain insight into how SOAP notes are written in a clinical setting and how to identify the most pertinent information in the EMR. Students also gain experience in patient interaction. They call patients one week prior to their appointment to remind them of their upcoming visit, discuss recent medication changes identified in their EMR, address medication adherence, identify “as needed” medications they would like to have refilled and remind them to bring adherence aids, such as pillboxes, to their returning appointment.

During these interactions, students may encounter questions, concerns and/or complaints that they can then discuss and try to resolve with the clinical pharmacist, which further enhances their interactions with the health care team. This rotation helps prepare the students for fourth-year APPE rotations and their future careers as pharmacists, while also giving them a deeper understanding of an ambulatory care practice setting.

CommunityHealth Located in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, CommunityHealth is a medical home that delivers comprehensive, high-quality, patient-centered health care at no cost to low-income, uninsured individuals in Illinois. At the health care center, Nazia Babul and Jennifer Marcelo provide clinical pharmacy services to patients such as medication therapy management, diabetes care, blood pressure management, medication reconciliation, insulin administration and glucometer/inhaler use teaching. They meet with patients to discuss what their medications are used for, the importance of medication adherence and how to use their medications properly.

The clinical pharmacists also help manage and educate patients on various disease states, including diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia, and recommend cost-effective medication while considering options available through the CommunityHealth pharmacy formulary. Other services provided by these clinical pharmacists include conducting immunization assessments and serving as a druginformation resource to other providers.

At CommunityHealth, clinical pharmacists collaborate with physicians and nurse practitioners to provide comprehensive care to patients. For example, in a pharmacist-led diabetes program, the Diabetes Care Group (DCG), clinical pharmacists make appropriate adjustments in patients’ medication regimens to help patients achieve their A1c goal, recommend preventative care such as up-todate immunizations, and make referrals for ophthalmology, dental and podiatry providers.

Recently, Dr. Babul and Dr. Marcelo presented their poster, “Impact of a Pharmacist-Led Diabetes Program on Changes in A1C and Immunization Rates for Diabetic Patients in a Low Income, Uninsured Population,” at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting. With the success seen in management of diabetic patients by clinical pharmacists, the providers are looking to expand other types of collaborations with the clinical pharmacists for management of their patients’ chronic disease states. Dr. Babul and Dr. Marcelo are working on developing other services to support patient goals such as tobacco cessation and asthma management. Additionally, they serve on the P&T committee at CommunityHealth, and precept students from various colleges of pharmacy, including UIC and Midwestern.

Drug Information Group Mike Gabay, Director

In 2015, faculty from the Drug Information Group (DIG) published The Clinical Practice of Drug Information, a textbook that provides drug information and resources, including statistical analysis, literature evaluation, medication use policy and medication safety. Dr. Michael Gabay, director of the DIG, was the editor of the textbook. He also coauthored several chapters along with other DIG faculty members.

The DIG continued to expand its services with a variety of new clients, including Healthline, Optum, Fresenius Kabi, Vizient, Pfizer, Salveo Healthcare and Hospira. Projects of note include the development and ongoing maintenance of a specialty product pipeline database; completion of patient-focused drug information for a health website; development of “50 Facts” publications on epilepsy and migraine for patients; teaching of a literature evaluation and evidence-based medicine course at the Chicago State College of Pharmacy for the seventh year in a row; and completion of various medical writing projects, including formulary reviews, standard response letters, global core response documents, infographic summaries, slide kits and AMCP-formatted dossiers for various clients.

In 2015, the DIG also underwent an ASHP accreditation visit for its UIC/Takeda Pharmaceuticals PGY2 Drug Information residency program, which is now in its second year. The program is fully funded by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and the resident spends half the year at Takeda and the other half with the DIG.

Prior Authorization Donna Clay, Director

The Prior Authorization (PA) Services Group began its contract with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (IL-HFS) in 2006. It is currently comprised of 16 pharmacists, 12 located in Chicago and four in Springfield, and one technician.

The group develops clinical-based criteria for non-preferred medications and processes PA requests in a consistent and timely manner for Illinois Medicaid Fee-For-Service programs. Approximately 700 requests are processed daily. In addition, the group provides customer service and education with regard to PA policies, determination appeals and billing issues for pharmacies and healthcare providers via phone, fax and website, www. ilpriorauthorization.com.

PA program requirements allow the group to review medication requests on a case-by-case basis, monitor for off-label use, adherence, duplicate therapy, drug interactions and safety issues, and ensure therapeutically appropriate, cost-effective medication utilization. Over the past year, the group administered several programs, including treatments for hepatitis C and cystic fibrosis, oncology agents, erythropoietin stimulating agents, select HIV medications, Makena, IVIG products, PCSK9 inhibitors and opioid misuse. Additionally, collaboration with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is ongoing to ensure appropriate consent is received by providers for psychotropic medications prescribed to children in the legal custody of DCFS. The PA group also works in conjunction with the Medication Review and Academic Detailing (MRAD) Group to administer the Four Prescription Policy, and participates in the IL-HFS Bureau of Assistance Hearings appeal process. These programs have helped the State of Illinois achieve millions of dollars in savings over the past year.

Medication Review and Academic Detailing Mary Lynn Moody, Director of Business Development, Assistant Dean for Business Development

The Medication and Academic Detailing Unit was established in 2012. It is designed to reduce the use of unnecessary and duplicate medication therapy and reduce the overall prescription drug cost for Illinois Medicaid. This partnership with the State of Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services has been successful in reducing the utilization of unnecessary medications in Illinois Medicaid.

This program targets recipients who are taking more medications than are needed (polypharmacy) for

chronic diseases. The focus is on individuals who are taking more than four prescription medications monthly.

Pharmacists review the medications and consult with the recipient’s provider to recommend clinically appropriate changes in therapy. The pharmacists also target high-cost, high-risk medications and provide telephone consultations to providers with specific recommendations and educational interventions.

This past year, MRAD established a pain-management program in response to the heroin crisis in Illinois. This program has reduced the inappropriate use of narcotics in the Medicaid population by 30%.

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience Program Sheila M. Allen, Director

Sheila Allen, director of Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) on the Chicago campus, works with Louise Parent-Stevens, assistant director of IPPE on the Chicago campus, and Allison Schriever, experiential director on the Rockford campus, to ensure that the IPPE hours and experiences on both campuses are effectively incorporated in the curriculum and run smoothly. The group works under the direction of Experiential Director Kristen Goliak and is supported by Marlowe Djuric-Kachlic and Latha Radhakrishnan, experiential colleagues on the Chicago campus.

In the spring of 2015, 192 first-year pharmacy students completed required hours in a community pharmacy practice setting with our various partners in and around Chicago and Rockford as part of the Experiential I course. In addition, 204 third-year pharmacy students on the Chicago and Rockford campuses completed their IPPE hours, conducting patient interviews, writing SOAP notes, and presenting patient cases within our medical center under the supervision of Pharmacy Practice clinical faculty and residents as part of the Experiential IV course. In March, we again offered our 13th annual APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate Program at the college, in which we trained 194 third-year pharmacy students.

During the summer, 204 third-year pharmacy students completed required IPPE hours in an inpatient or ambulatory care direct patient care setting as part of the Experiential V course. In June, Allen took over the coordination of a one-day workshop for third-year medical students on injection techniques, inhaler drug administration and home diagnostic tests, where our thirdyear pharmacy students do much of the teaching overseen by pharmacy practice faculty. Allen and Latha Radhakrishnan collaborated with other faculty from the Committee on Institutional Cooperation Pharmacy Assessment Collaborative (CIC-PAC) Working Group on Problem Based Assessment and presented a special session at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Annual Meeting entitled, “Utilizing Technology for Assessment in the Skills-Based Laboratory Curriculum.”

In the fall, 189 first-year pharmacy students on both the Chicago and Rockford campuses completed a one-week shadow experience in a pharmacy practice area of their choice under the direction of a current fourth-year student on advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) or a volunteer preceptor. In addition, 193 second-year pharmacy students focused on patient interviewing and physical assessment skills in completion of their IPPE hours as part of the Experiential II course, and 192 third-year pharmacy students on the Chicago and Rockford campuses completed their IPPE hours conducting patient interviews, writing SOAP notes, and presenting patient cases under the supervision of Pharmacy Practice clinical faculty and residents, as well as volunteer preceptors as part of the Experiential III course. In October, for the 10th straight year, we partnered with the State of Illinois to administer the seasonal influenza vaccine to all State of Illinois employees and retirees. Pharmacy faculty, residents and fourth-year pharmacy students rallied together to administer the seasonal

influenza vaccine to as many eligible participants as possible. University Health Services also joined in our efforts. In total, we administered 1,291 seasonal influenza vaccines over two days.

Following a successful year for the IPPE curriculum, we will rollout our new curriculum in the fall of 2016. We are excited about the revamped construct for our IPPE hours and ready for the changes and challenges ahead. We are also appreciative of the department’s support and grateful to the faculty and preceptors in and around Chicago and Rockford who make our IPPE curriculum possible.

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience Program Kristen Goliak, Director

The experiential education group, which is comprised of Kristen Goliak, Sheila Allen, Allison Schriever, Louise Parent-Stevens, Latha Radhakrishnan, Marlowe Djuric-Kachlic and Jennifer Dietrich, had a very successful year.

In 2015, the Department of Pharmacy Practice continued its major partnerships with Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago Medical Center and Stroger Hospital for IPPE and APPE students. We are extremely grateful for these relationships that help us to continue to maintain student placements.

In January 2015, Marlowe Djuric-Kachlic joined the experiential education group. She will support two core courses in the curriculum for the P2 year.

In May, 204 P4 students graduated from the UIC College of Pharmacy after completing 1,224 APPEs. We are very proud of these students and the successes they achieved while in pharmacy school. We are also extremely thankful to all of the faculty and external preceptors who accepted these students on their APPEs and the opportunities and education that they were provided.

At a dinner reception for graduates in the Class of 2015, the Golden Apple Award was presented to Dr. Paul Pluta. In addition, Dr. Scott Wirth received the UIC Preceptor of the Year award and Dr. Joseph Levato was honored with the External Preceptor of the Year award. These three distinguished pharmacists were honored for their dedication to the educational development of the graduates.

Also in May, the Experiential Group held a Preceptor Conference. The conference was well attended by outside preceptors as well as internal faculty preceptors. A group of 103 individuals on the Chicago campus and 23 individuals on the Rockford campus were also able to attend via ITV. This was our third interactive preceptor conference with Rockford and it went extremely well. We had four plenary sessions: Experiential Education: Is It Applied Learning or Vocationalism?, Standards 2016 Update, UIC New Curriculum Preview and a panel discussion on Best Practices to Incorporate Learners into the Practice Setting. These sessions were great opportunities for our preceptors to acquire new knowledge and learn new teaching techniques while networking with one another.

Pharmacy Services Andrew J. Donnelly, Director

In 2015, the Specialty Pharmacy unit received full URAC accreditation. This was a significant accomplishment, as we are one of a small number of health systems in the country to achieve this recognition. Our seven outpatient pharmacies transitioned to a new pharmacy management system during the last half of the year. This new system

is more robust than our previous one and provides benefits related to patient care, safety, regulatory compliance and finance. We have continued to expand UI Team Rx, our patient-centered coordination of care program, in our outpatient pharmacies.

This has demonstrated improved patient outcomes in the disease states targeted to date. Due to the increasing number of outpatient oncology-related studies coordinated by our Investigational Drug Service, we added a second pharmacist to the team.

Our Pharmacy Value Analysis Committee has identified nearly $3 million in medication-related expense reduction opportunities since its inception. The committee is currently focusing on chemotherapy use in the hospital and transitioning patient care provided in the inpatient setting to the outpatient setting when appropriate. We continue to focus on the development of clinical care protocols, which allow our pharmacists to initiate orders to provide timely care and services to patients. Nine pharmacy/ medication-related protocols were developed this year, including outpatient pharmacy vaccine, asthma management, heart failure medication titration and management of long-acting injectable antipsychotics. We implemented an inpatient anticoagulation management service run by our clinical staff pharmacists to provide comprehensive clinical services to our warfarin patients. We also received approval on plans for renovating the hospital pharmacy cleanroom.

Renovation is scheduled to occur in mid-2016.

In the coming year, our new initiatives include implementing a new 340B management system, an IV workflow management system and an IDS management web-based software. Service expansion in the areas of managed care and pharmacogenomics is also under consideration. We are also starting a PGY2 residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration, with the first resident starting in July 2016.

Adult Primary Care Team Louise Parent Stevens, Team Leader

The Adult Primary Care Team has expanded the role of the clinical pharmacist in the prevention and management of chronic disease states in the primary care clinics at UIC. Using approved protocols and clinical guidelines, team members work in tandem with other health care providers to manage diabetes, anticoagulation, asthma and traveler’s health in their patient populations. Through the Mile Square Health Centers, we are helping deliver pharmaceutical care to underserved areas of Chicago. Team members are conducting research to assess the impact of clinical pharmacy services provided.

In addition to pharmacy student education, team members provide education to medical residents and students on topics including contraception and non-prescription drugs.

Antithrombosis Clinic Nancy Shapiro, Operations Manager

The Antithrombosis Clinic Team (ATC), a clinical care unit that is part of the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences Center and housed in the Outpatient Care Center’s Heart Center, is comprised of six clinical pharmacist faculty members who provide direct patient care and clinical pharmacy services: Nancy Shapiro, Shubha Bhat, Nina Huynh, Erika Hellenbart, Ann Kuchta and James Lee. The ATC also utilizes dedicated technical support from Emi Narcise, CPhT.

With the goal of maximizing benefits and reducing adverse effects and complications resulting from traditional and newer antithrombotic therapies, the team provided direct patient care to approximately 500 unique patients and conducted approximately 8,000 face-to-face patient care visits in 2015. Clinic referrals come from our on-site clinics, emergency department and hospital units, as well as affiliated off-site clinics and community sites from external providers. The clinic served as a clinical training site for seven APPE pharmacy students, 10 PGY1 and PGY2 residents, and four international pharmacist trainees. In addition, our team facilitated experiential, patient-based interviews for several 2nd- and 3rd-year pharmacy students.

Scholarly and research productivity from the team included publications in peer-reviewed journals, abstracts presented at scientific meetings, invited presentations at international, national, regional and local professional conferences, peer reviewers for several pharmacy and medical journals, and leadership responsibilities with several state and national pharmacy committees.

Critical Care Jeff Mucksavage, Team Leader

The critical care clinical pharmacy team uses the critical care environment to fulfill the mission of service, teaching and scholarly activity. The group is comprised of eight members whose practice areas include medical intensive care, cardiac intensive care, neuroscience intensive care, emergency medicine, toxicology and anesthesia services.

Members are at the forefront of clinical pharmacy practice in their respective areas and are integral members of the multidisciplinary critical-care teams.

In 2015, the critical care group continued its annual critical care symposium. The program featured a two-hour continuing education program, “Who You Gonna Call?

Clot Busters.” The program focused on thrombolytic therapy for a variety of acute medical conditions. Speakers at this program included Dr. Nicole Gasbarro (PGY2 Cardiology), Dr. Laura Means (PGY-2 Critical Care) and Adam MacLasco (PGY-2 Emergency Medicine). Dr. Jeffrey Mucksavage (Neurosciences), who leads the Critical Care Team, moderated the program. It was a memorable gathering of alumni, former residents and friends of the college.

Several members of the critical care team had notable achievements in 2015. Dr. Robert Didomenico (Cardiology) was promoted to Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice. He was also elected Chair-Elect of the ACCP Cardiology PRN. Dr. Scott Benken (Medical Intensive Care) spoke internationally in Hong Kong on critical care topics including hemodynamics, vasoactive medications and life-threatening arrhythmias.

Dr. Keri Kim (Neurosciences) was named a “Remarkable Woman” in 2015 by the Chicago Brain Aneurysm Foundation for her advocacy work. Dr. Jeffrey Mucksavage (Neurosciences) was appointed to the Emergency Neurological Life Support Committee of the Neurocritical Care Society. Dr. Eljim Tesoro (Neurosciences) received a Presidential Citation award for his contributions to the Neurocritical Care Society.

Infectious Diseases Stewardship Alan Gross, Antimicrobial Stewardship

In 2015, the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) at UI Health continued its mission to improve the outcomes of patients with infectious diseases. It continued its collaboration with faculty from the College of Pharmacy, Alan Gross and Jamie Paek, as well as Susan Bleasdale from the College of Medicine. To improve patient outcomes related to infectious diseases, the ASP is focused on educating clinicians and providing hospital-wide and individual patient interventions.

In collaboration with the microbiology lab, we initiated a new ASP service in 2015 that uses new technology (Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight) to more rapidly identify bacterial species from blood cultures. The species identification

is then relayed to ASP members for assessment and to provide tailored treatment recommendations to the medical team. This service has decreased the time involved in initiating optimal therapy for patients with bloodstream infections at UI Health.

Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Larry Danziger and Keith Rodvold, Section Co-Chairs

The Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy continues to provide a wide range of scholarly, teaching, and clinical services to the university and the Chicago area. Co-directors Dr. Larry Danziger and Dr. Keith Rodvold provide leadership and vision for the section. The Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy was established in 1996.

The section provides clinical pharmacy services at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System HIV Outreach Clinics, as well as at the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and the Ruth Rothstein CORE Center of the Cook County Bureau of Health and Hospital System. The section has one of the largest Pharmacy Infectious Disease Fellowship Training programs in the United States. The section has significantly contributed to the training of the next generation of pharmacy educators, researchers and practitioners in the area of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. To date, more than 65 Infectious Diseases Fellows have come through the section’s training program.

The section is active in research in both clinical and basic sciences. It is involved with antimicrobial research in Phases I through IV. It also manages the Microbiology Research Laboratory, which explores activity of new compounds, studies the improved use of both new and old antimicrobials, and examines new approaches to pharmacotherapy for antibiotic-resistant infections.

Federal and pharmaceutical industry funding continue to support our research and scholarly activities. Dr. Danziger is the principle investigator of the Department of Defense Grant and Cooperative Agreement, “Non-Invasive Detection of Unique Molecular Signatures in Laser-Induced Retinal Injuries.”

The team of investigators includes scientists from the NASA Glenn Research Center and Johns Hopkins. The grant has received $2,108,000 to date.

Dr. Rodvold recently served as the chairperson of the Special Emphasis Panel for Pharmacokinetics and was a member of the steering committee for the Antibacterial Resistance Leadership Group (ARLG). ARLG is an initiative funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health to support clinical research in antibacterial resistance. The ARLG is tasked with developing and prioritizing a clinical research agenda and designing, implementing and conducting clinical studies to address the growing public health threat of antibacterial resistance. Additionally, Dr. Rodvold received research funding from the National Institute of Health and the ARLG to conduct a Phase I study to evaluate pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and safety/tolerability of two dosing regimens of oral fosfomycin tromethamine in healthy adult subjects. Dr. Rodvold was also funded by Theravance Biopharma Inc. to conduct a pharmacokinetic research study of telavancin in normal body weight and obese (classes I, II, and III) healthy adult subjects.

Dr. Keith Rodvold joined Dr. John Rotschafer (University of Minnesota) and Dr. David Andes (University of Wisconsin) as an editor of a new textbook, Antibiotic Pharmacodynamics, published by Humana Press.

As part of the Section of Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy, Renata Smith, Rodrigo Burgos, Melissa Badowski and Thomas Chiampas contribute to the development of the profession through scholarly, teaching, research and service activities in the area of HIV pharmacotherapy.

The section’s HIV pharmacotherapy services provide care for approximately 1,200 HIV-positive individuals in a variety of settings within the university. Seven outpatient clinics, which include a main campus HIV clinic and infectious disease clinics in six HIV outreach clinics in Chicago, have the highest incidence of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, according to surveillance data from the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Additionally, an HIV Telemedicine Clinic provides HIV care to 26 correctional facilities within the Illinois Department of Corrections system. The HIV Telemedicine Clinic provides multidisciplinary specialty services for individuals with HIV who are incarcerated at the 26 facilities in the State of Illinois. Since the HIV Telemedicine Clinic began in July 2010, 1,100 patients received multidisciplinary care. The program has provided more than 6,778 patient visits.

The practice was granted a technology award in 2013 by the American Academy of HIV Medicine and the Institute for Technology in Health Care, recognizing innovative use of technology in the HIV care setting. This was also the first year that the section was able to initiate research and present data nationally and internationally. This unique environment facilitates a wonderful learning experience. The setting allows experiential students, pharmacy residents and fellows to be involved in the future of medical care.

Educational outreach has also led to the section’s involvement in the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC), which is based in the Jane Addams College of Social work. Through these activities, the section provides educational information and programming to pharmacists in a six-state area about infectious diseases pharmacotherapy as it relates to HIV infection. The section has received accreditation by the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists for the HIV Pharmacy Residency program (PGY2), co-directed by Drs. Smith and Burgos. Additionally, Dr. Badowski, Dr. Smith and Dr. Chiampas developed several elective courses on case-based infectious diseases, management of the HIV patient, exploration of telemedicine in pharmacy practice and concepts in drug development.

The section continues to maintain its long-term relationships with the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center and John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Dr. Gail Itokazu and Dr. Robert Glowacki provide services for inpatient infectious diseases at this public urban teaching hospital in Chicago that provides primary, specialty and tertiary healthcare services to the 5 million residents of Cook County. Dr. Max Blake provides HIV pharmacotherapy services at the CORE center, a medical facility in the Illinois Medical District. It was founded by the Cook County Bureau of Health Services and cares for people with diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

Medication Therapy Management Clinic Tiffany Scott-Horton, Operations Coordinator, MTMC

The pharmacist-run Medication Therapy Management Clinic (MTMC) is located in the UI Health’s Outpatient Care Center. The clinic’s aim is to lead in medication therapy management through innovation, education and research to decrease hospitalizations, improve healthcare utilization, reduce costs and improve a patient’s quality of life.

Clinicians at MTMC focus on helping patients afflicted with chronic disease states improve their medication adherence.

Moreover, the clinicians collaborate with the patient’s other health-care providers to prevent duplication in therapy, avert or minimize adverse drug events, assist in monitoring a patient’s response to therapy and ensure continuity of care.

As a result, we are able to help improve healthcare utilization and minimize medication costs. MTMC strives to incorporate patient participation in the selfmanagement of their medications and disease states. The clinic facilitates patient access to all necessary medications, which are filled by the Outpatient Care Center Pharmacy on a scheduled, monthly basis.

In 2015, six MTMC pharmacists (Jessica Tilton, Tiffany Scott-Horton, Lori Wilken, Pearl Stier, Julie Jun and Amanda Eades) delivered direct patient care to approximately 300 patients. MTMC participated in the fifth and final year of an NIH grant, “Health Promoters and Pharmacists in Team Diabetes Management,” as well as continued to deliver case-management services to Internal Medicine BCBS HMO-I patients. The clinic was excited to gain more patient care autonomy by having hypertension and diabetes management protocols for Internal Medicine patients approved by the Medical Staff Executive Committee. Many of the MTMC pharmacists participated in community-outreach programs such as health fairs, immunization clinics and monthly senior center disease state activities through the Chicago Department of Family Support Services. This year, four MTMC clinicians provided asthma education to members of Facing Forward, an organization that works to end homelessness in Chicago.

Lastly, the clinic also served as a rotation site for 12 students, one Community PGY1 resident and two Ambulatory Care PGY2 residents.

Inpatient Medicine Mat Thambi, Team Leader

The Clinical Pharmacist Medicine Team consists of Dr. Choye, Dr. Koronkowski, Dr. McPherson and Dr. Thambi who cover Internal Medicine, and Dr. Schmiedeskamp-Rahe who covers Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The Medicine Team continues to execute and improve upon its program for student-centered transitions of care, RxCARESTM. Improvements include assuring VTE prophylaxis at admission, structured referrals to pharmacist-run clinics and a “smart” checklist for specific high-risk or high-cost medications. During the 20142015 academic year, students provided the following interventions for nearly 700 patients through RxCARES: made more than 1,200 changes to medications prior to admission lists, identified over 40 new allergies, made over 200 changes to inpatient medications on admission, made over 300 changes to discharge instructions for medications, identified almost 100 needed prescriptions that were not given to patients at discharge and made nearly 200 additional medication-related interventions with follow-up phone calls.

Additionally, Dr. Choye successfully recruited for and filled the PGY-1 international position and is preparing for an accreditation visit from ASHP. The residency provides training for international students who are mostly graduating from U.S.-based PharmD programs and wish to return to their native countries to practice. The mission of the program is to foster the growth of clinical pharmacy outside of the United States. Dr. Koronkowski is involved in two HRSA-

funded Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs to develop and enhance curriculum content to address multiple chronic conditions and the complexities of caring for these populations. Dr. McPherson served on the UIC Faculty Senate Executive Committee, the UIC Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Athletics and the Department of Pharmacy Practice Advisory Committee. He also recently became director of the UIC Pharmacy Undergraduate Programs, which create undergraduate pipeline programs that lead students to the UIC College of Pharmacy. He also serves as the faculty advisor for the UIC Pre-Pharmacy Club. Dr. Thambi continues to coordinate and improve RxCARES while providing data analytics for quality improvement and research development. Dr Schmiedeskamp-Rahe was running a region-wide teaching certificate program for over 50 PGY1 pharmacy residents from 10 institutions in the Chicago and Rockford areas. For students, she co-coordinated an elective on the clinical applications of pharmacokinetics.

Oncology Team Sandra Cuellar Puri, Team Leader

The Hematology-Oncology pharmacy team provides pharmaceutical care to the inpatient medical oncology and hematology/stem cell transplant units as well as the ambulatory cancer clinic. In 2015, the group broadened its clinical services in the UIC multiple myeloma clinic. As described in an interview with Karen Sweiss and Scott Wirth in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, this unique outpatient model involves collaborative physician support so that clinical pharmacists manage both anti-cancer drug therapy and supportive care medications that UIC multiple myeloma patients require.

The hematology-oncology pharmacy team continues to have a significant presence on a local and international level. All oncology clinical pharmacists participate as active members in several interdisciplinary university health system and college committees, including data safety monitoring, institutional review board, cancer protocol review, pain and admissions committees, and an oncology advisory board.

Team members were honored with several awards and national committee appointments in 2015. Karen Sweiss was recipient of the Rising Star Award, which recognizes young alumni of the UIC College of Pharmacy who have distinguished themselves in their professional achievements within the past 10 years. Scott Wirth was awarded Teacher of the Semester, Teacher of the Year and Preceptor of the Year. Sandra Cuellar was appointed to the ASHP educational committee as well as the Hematology/ Oncology Pharmacy Association (HOPA) Board Certification in Oncology (BCOP) committee. In November, the group collaborated to host the fourth-annual Oncology Pharmacy Conference. With over 140 pharmacists from the Chicago area and Indiana in attendance, the conference offered four contact hours for continuing education credit. Sandra Cuellar served as moderator and Karen Sweiss presented “Updates in Haploidentical Stem Cell Transplantation.”

In addition to practice management and mentoring pharmacy students and PGY1 and PGY2 residents, oncology faculty members continue to educate practicing pharmacists abroad. They have hosted several visiting pharmacists from Asia at UIC cancer practice areas. In 2015, Christina Haaf traveled to the University of Malta to conduct several on-site clinical activities, including didactic teaching on solid tumors, evaluation of student journal club discussions and case presentations. Sandra Cuellar presented “Management of Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Induced Dermatologic Toxicity” and “Updates in the Management of Chemotherapy Induced Nausea/Vomiting” at the Pharmacotherapy Annual Conference in Guangzhou, China.

Pediatrics Team Kirsten Ohler, Team Leader

At the end of 2015, a significant change occurred within the pediatric team: Dr. Donna Kraus retired after more than 32 years of service to the university. The remaining five pediatric clinical pharmacists have been very active in trying to fill Dr. Kraus’s shoes.

Advocacy Group’s Advanced Pediatric Therapeutics textbook, while Dr. Jennifer Pham served as a reviewer for the text. Dr. Lauren Oliveri, Dr. Jennifer Pham and Dr. Kirsten Ohler passed a rigorous examination to become Board-Certified Pediatric Pharmacy Specialists (BCPPS).

Dr. Pham and Dr. Ohler were invited to speak at the March of Dimes Illinois Chapter’s 40th Annual Perinatal Nursing Conference and also at the Chicago Perinatology Society meeting. They also each presented research posters at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy. Dr. Ohler was a speaker in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s (ACCP) Pharmacotherapy Preparatory Review and Recertification Course and the Pediatric Pharmacy Preparatory Review Course. She also served on the planning committee for both courses and presented an update in a neonatal therapeutics webinar for ACCP’s online classroom. Dr. Isabel Porto, along with Dr. Kraus, Dr. Ohler and a former PGY2 Pediatric Pharmacy resident, had a case report published examining a unique use of morphine for management of autonomic storm in a pediatric patient.

In addition to these scholarly pursuits, these faculty remain integral members of the pediatric inpatient and outpatient care teams and have continued to actively participate in mentoring international pharmacy scholars. The group hosted two pharmacists from Hong Kong and one pharmacist from Singapore for on-site clinical training.

Dr. Pham was invited to teach pediatric pharmacotherapy for the PharmD program at the University of Malta.

Residency Program Frank Paloucek, Director

In the 2014-15 academic year, the Residency Program had an excellent recruiting season and successfully filled all 12 positions in the Match.

Unfortunately one resident had to withdraw early for personal reasons. Our remaining 11 PGY1 residents all successfully matched into PGY2 programs.

This is the second year in a row that we have achieved this success; given these competitive times, this is a significant achievement. We also had a successful Match for the 2015-2016 year and filled 12 PGY1 positions.

Rockford Campus Pharmacy Practice David Bartels, Vice Dean

The Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Rockford campus continues to grow. In 2015, we added two additional faculty members to the team.

Marianne Pop, PharmD, BCPS joined the faculty in August after completing a PGY2 residency in Emergency Medicine. Her clinical practice is in the emergency department at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where she is developing new clinical services including participation in codes, medication/ immunization reconciliation, discharge medication review, antimicrobial stewardship, pharmacokinetic dosing and order verification. Erin August, PharmD is the second new pharmacy practice faculty member. She joined the faculty in August after completing a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency. Her clinical practice is in transitions of care at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford. In this role, August is working with hospitalized highrisk patients to ensure proper therapy, education about medications, discharge with appropriate medications and post-hospital follow-up to reduce hospital readmissions. Currently, 13 faculty members from the department teach and maintain clinical practices in Rockford and the surrounding communities.

One of the highlights of the Rockford campus is the Rural Pharmacy Education Program (RPHARM). RPHARM students are enrolled for four years in a series of elective courses with medical students enrolled in the Rural Medical Education Program (RMED). They study issues that are often unique to rural areas, such as mental and public health issues, herbacide/pestacide exposure, veternary medicine and how to work as a team in a rural environment. During their fourth year, a pharmacy and medical student complete 16-18 weeks of clerkship in the same rural community and complete a research project evaluating an aspect of health in that community.

The goal of the program is to train students who want to practice in rural, underserved areas. As of 2015, 15 students graduated from the RPHARM program with a concentration in rural pharmacy services. In addition, 22 students are P1-P4 students in the RPHARM program. Most of these students come from rural backgrounds and are fulfilling the mission of the program by coming from rural areas and going back to rural areas to practice after graduation (see maps of matriculants and graduates).

For the last five years, Department of Pharmacy Practice members Allison Schriever, PharmD and Chris Schriever, PharmD have been working with area hospitals and health departments on mass immunization programs and disaster preparedness. Since 2011, they have held immunization clinics to provide influenza and Tdap immunizations to people who normally would not receive immunizations.

Community volunteers, faculty and students from the pharmacy, medical and nursing programs staff the clinics. Allison Schriever, PharmD, the Boone County Health Department Emergency Coordinator, Region 1 Preparedness Coordinator and Dean of Health Professions and Sauk Valley Community College presented information and data about these efforts at the IDPH Preparedness Summit 2015. Their presentation, “Expanding Coalitions with Medical Volunteers,” provided attendees with insights on how to recruit volunteers (including students), involve community partners and conduct successful mass-vaccination outreach.

Solid Organ Transplant Team Maya Campara, Team Leader

The University of Illinois Hospital (UIH) Transplant Program underwent a complete overhaul this year. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) required our program to enter a Systems Improvement Agreement (SIA) that was in place for the majority of 2015. During that time, we experienced a decline in the number of transplants performed.

However, we gained valuable resources to make significant and lasting improvements in the quality of care that we provide to our patients. As Transplant PharmDs are CMSmandated members of all transplant programs in the United States, our role and participation during the SIA was essential.

In terms of clinical service, our team was recognized for establishing a unique transition-of-care model. At UIH, Transplant PharmDs participate in the pre-transplant evaluation and selection process, develop and maintain UIH immunosuppression guidelines, and collaboratively manage medication therapy during transplant hospitalization and long-term clinic follow up. Based on CMS recommendations, we developed a comprehensive Transplant Pharmacist Medication Therapy Management Protocol that formalized our role and responsibilities on the team. This protocol was implemented in November 2015 at UIH. Finally, our role in the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs was redefined so that a Transplant PharmD is now a mandated member of QAPI team for kidney, liver, small bowel and pancreas Transplant Programs.

This year, a Transplant PharmD designed and implemented a quality project that resulted in reduced hospital stay for kidney donors and won third place at the Annual UIH Quality Fair.

Academically, our team members continue to coordinate the Advanced Transplant Therapeutics Elective (PMPR385), now in its third year. In 2015, students were exposed to transplant topics presented by PharmDs from different

Chicago-based transplant programs. They also took part in vigorous debates on re-transplantation of non-adherent patients, participated in American Society Of Transplantation (AST) Organ Donation Awareness Challenge and viewed a living donor robotic kidney transplant. This year, our team also took charge of coordinating a multidisciplinary Transplant Fellow Conference that has become a popular discussion forum for all transplant related specialties at UIH. In 2015, we welcomed our 13th PGY2 resident. Since then, we have recruited our next resident through the early commitment process. In addition, our very first Transplant Fellow is already making waves in the transplant world. She won the Young Innovator Award for her research, “Renal transplant outcomes in elderly recipients based on cadaveric versus living donor transplant,” which will be presented at the Cutting Edge of Transplantation Conference in Arizona. Both trainees have multiple manuscripts pending publication. They also presented at a patient education and outreach program sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). During a different NKF-sponsored education session for the dialysis nurses, our fellow presented a lecture on chronic kidney disease-associated bone and mineral disorders.

At the 2015 American Transplant Congress, our team exhibited eight abstracts. Two were presented as oral presentations and one poster was selected as a “Poster of Distinction.” At the 2015 ACCP and ASHP meetings, we presented several posters showcasing the work of pharmacy students that participated in our summer research boot camp. Our team members continue to accept invitations to share their knowledge and experience via various platforms, including ACCP-sponsored webinars and the Illinois Council of HealthSystem Pharmacists Clinical Practitioner and Researcher Network Program. One of our members was the only non-physician speaker invited to present at the 2015 UIC Transplant Pathology Conference.

Our team continues to stay involved with various local, regional and national transplant and pharmacy groups. At the college level, members of our team serve as faculty advisers to Rho Chi Society and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. We continue to maintain leadership roles within the Illinois Transplant Pharmacists Association. On the national level, our team is represented at the 2017 ACCP Planning Committee and the ACCP Research Institute’s Practice-Based Research Network Community Advisory Panel. We also participate in various committees within the AST Transplant Pharmacy Community of Practice.

Wood Street/PCC Pharmacy Nazia Somani Babul, Marlowe Djuric Kachlic, Jennifer Chan Marcelo, Community Clinical Pharmacists

The clinical pharmacists in the Wood Street/PCC Pharmacy continue to develop their role in providing medication therapy management for pharmacy patients. Eligible patients in the pharmacy can be referred to the clinical pharmacist team to receive OutpatientBased Clinical Pharmacy Services (OCPS). The purpose of this service is to work with patients in the community setting to provide them with education, monitoring and tools to empower them to improve their own health outcomes. Services that patients can be referred for include: comprehensive medication reconciliation; disease state monitoring for diabetes, hypertension and asthma; screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure and body mass index; education/training on various disease states and medical devices; immunization assessment; and tobaccocessation counseling. Patients are enrolled in this service through referrals from providers and active recruitment by the pharmacy staff.

The clinical pharmacists reach out to providers to make recommendations for optimizing patients’ medication regimen and coordinating care. The care provided in the outpatient pharmacies is currently documented in the electronic medical record.

The team continues to establish their service by standardizing their referral process within the pharmacy and assessing the various types of interventions the team had provided thus far for their patients. The UIC PGY-1 Community Residency Program continues to be based in the Wood Street/PCC Pharmacy. The resident assists in providing OCPS services, as well as working on implementing a new clinical service at the pharmacy as a part of the residency longitudinal project experience.

Department Research Program: Faculty Highlights The department is fortunate to have a strong and diverse research program.

Here are highlights from some research programs led by our department faculty members.

James H. Fischer In 2015, the research efforts of James H. Fischer focused on two areas: pharmacokinetics of new oncology drugs and advancement of a regional human subject protection program. Fischer collaborated with the UIC Cancer Center in conducting pre-clinical studies and Phase I clinical trials. During 2015, these activities involved pharmacokinetic design and analysis for three ongoing Phase I trials and pre-clinical studies for two agents. Fischer’s efforts in establishing a regional human subject protection program reached fruition when The Chicago Area Institutional Review Board (CHAIRb) began reviewing research proposals in January 2015. A second, three-year subcontract for operation of CHAIRb was secured from the Patient Centered Outcome Research Institute in 2015.

Young Jeong The lab of Young Jeong conducts studies the area of drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics. The lab is currently focused on altered pharmacokinetics in pregnant women. Medication use in pregnancy is prevalent because of pre-existing medical conditions or newly developing disorders. However, it remains unclear how pregnancy influences drug pharmacokinetics, especially hepatic drug metabolism. The Jeong lab has been working to identify factor(s) responsible for altered drug metabolism during pregnancy and understand how they work. Results from these studies can provide a basis for developing dosing guidelines for pregnant women. Additionally, the Jeong lab has been involved in collaborative projects for the development of antiviral and antibiotic drugs by characterizing preclinical pharmacokinetic profiles of drug candidates.

Jeremy Johnson, PharmD, PhD Dr. Jeremy Johnson’s research focuses on the evaluation of phytochemicals from dietary sources for cancer chemoprevention. The first project focused on elucidating the mechanism of action of carnosic acid and carnosol from the Mediterranean herb rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis). This work has led to an understanding of how each of these individual diterpenes promote degradation of the androgen receptor for prostate cancer. The second project focused on elucidating the mechanism of individual xanthones from the mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) fruit for modulating endoplasmic reticulum stress by upregulation of the CHOP pathway. Dr. Johnson completed a subproject with the mangosteen fruit that determined the single dose oral pharmacokinetics in mice using pure alpha-mangostin, the most abundant phytochemical in the mangosteen, and a highly characterized mangosteen extract standardized to 40% alpha-mangostin. A third project area is underway evaluating the single dose pharmacokinetics of resveratrol and the ability to modulate the Notch signaling pathway in GI neuroendocrine tumors in a human Phase I and Phase II trials, respectively. As a result of the research project on evaluating Mediterranean herbs, the American Cancer Society awarded Dr. Johnson a four-year, $720,000 Research Scholar grant to evaluate the cancer chemoprevention properties of carnosol.

Gail Mahady Osteoporosis is a major public health concern, characterized by low bone mass and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increased susceptibility to fractures. Bone-loss results from an imbalance of the bone-forming activity of osteoblasts and the resorption activity of osteoclasts. Thus, in addition to preventing or reducing bone resorption, stimulation of bone formation is an essential component of treating osteoporosis, bone trauma and filling osseous defects often required after surgery. While much research has focused on soy isoflavones, such as genistein for osteoprotective effects, the anthocyanins (a subclass of flavonoids) have also been proposed as being potentially more active than other dietary flavonoids, but have not been a central focus of previous research. Novel transgenic in vivo models such as teleost fish (including zebrafish -Danio rerio and medaka, Oryzias latipes) are now well established for use in human skeletal research, thereby combining powerful genetics with high-resolution in vivo imaging. Like mammals, teleost fish develop bones directly from mesenchymal condensations (membranous bone formation) and on cartilage scaffolds (endochondral/perichondral bone formation). Recent findings indicate that the genetic networks controlling bone formation are highly conserved in all vertebrates, including teleosts. Current paradigms suggest that isoflavones from soy, such as genistein, may enhance bone mineral density due to their estrogenic effects. However, it appears that dietary anthocyanins may be more effective than other flavonoid subclasses and stimulate bone formation and reduce bone loss through anti-inflammatory mechanisms involving NFkB. Over the past few years, Gail Mahady and her lab team have developed a novel international collaboration of experts in the fields of natural products, women’s health, systems biology, transgenic medaka models, osteoporosis and cell biology. The collaborative work will determine the efficacy and molecular mechanisms of action of common dietary anthocyanins and their aglycones in novel transgenic medaka models for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The overall objectives of this new research are to establish the activity and molecular mechanisms involved in improving bone mineral density in transgenic medaka using in vivo imaging and systems biology. We will determine the effects and mechanism(s) of dietary anthocyanins on osteoblast formation and bone mineralization using osterix:mCherry medaka and osx:CFP-NTR transgenic medaka. The team will establish the effects and mechanism by which the anthocyanins or aglycones reduce bone resorption and osteoclastogenesis in a triple transgenic rankl:HSE:CFP medaka model using in vivo bioluminescent imaging to investigate the mechanisms by which these compounds protect osteoblasts against apoptosis, enhance osteoblast formation and reduce osteoclastogenesis.

Monsheel Sodhi

Monsheel Sodhi’s research focuses on the paucity of effective drug treatments for neurological disorders. The overall goal of her work is to unravel the molecular pathophysiology that underpins schizophrenia and major depression. Current therapies for mental illness have poor response rates. Mental illness is highly heritable and therefore genetic investigations will provide a better understanding of the molecular pathways leading to these disorders.

The overall goal of these studies is to identify novel targets for the development of psychotropic drugs with improved efficacy, in addition to the development of diagnostic and pharmacogenomic tools. In 2015, three high-profile papers published by the Sodhi Laboratory reported that the activities of several important genes differed significantly in male and female patients with either schizophrenia or depression. These genetic mechanisms may underpin sex differences in treatment outcomes and suicide risk in the mentally ill. Further work to consolidate these findings is being conducted.
