improvement projects to support our research and clinical service enterprise – the College of Pharmacy (COP) Talk Center, 118, 118B, 118B1, 112 and additional rented space in SCW for our Specialty Pharmacy Services. We’ve expanded our postgraduate training programs to include a jointly funded PGY2 residency program with NorthShore University Health System in Personalized Medicine, started a PGY2 Specialty Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency program and expanded our PGY1 program in Specialty Pharmacy to 2 residents, expanded our PGY2 Critical Care residency program to 2 residents, and expanded the number of positions in the ID-Critical Care and the Family Medicine – Academic Teaching Fellowships. The Department has again successfully competed and was granted a new post-doctoral scholar position as part of the University’s Bridge to the Faculty (B2F) program. This is the 2nd such position that the department has been granted in an effort to attract and foster diversity among our tenure track faculty. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the hard work and continued dedication of our faculty, staff, residents and fellows. A huge note of Thank You goes out to All! I would also like to send a note of thanks to those that support the Department by serving as preceptors and/or with financial contributions. Your generosity is a key to the continued success of our program. We know you realize the importance of this support and are grateful for your contributions that ensure we maintain the high standards of our Residency and Fellowship Programs. While this isn’t a comprehensive list of everything we’ve accomplished, it gives a glimpse into the productivity and many successes of our faculty, staff, and trainees. For next year, I’m looking forward to continue expanding on our previous year’s successes to further the educational, research, service and entrepreneurship mission of the Department.

RESEARCH

PAGE 8

Research continues to grow and expand in the department among our tenure and clinical track faculty. Our overall objective is to emphasize the impact that a pharmacist can have on the research continuum from drug discovery to early phase clinical trials to applied pharmacy. COVID-19 remains an important area of research with multiple faculty fully engaged in this area. Drs. Nancy Shapiro and Keri Kim have been key partners in the ACTIV-4 clinical trials ongoing at UIC to evaluate prevention of thrombotic events in COVID-19 patients. Dr. Eric Wenzler’s research group completed a CDC sponsored study tracking longitudinal antibody response to COVID-19 to understand antibody dynamics in healthcare workers. Drs. Rob DiDomenico and Sarah Michienzi received funding support from the Chicago Department of Health to implement mobile vaccination efforts towards COVID-19. Dr. Edith Nutescu and Dr. James Lee received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and the National Blood Clot Alliance to study Coagulopathies in patients with COVID-19. Our infectious disease faculty including Dr. Zack Bulman’s lab has identified novel correlations between bacterial genotypes and phenotypes to optimize antibiotic treatment selection against Gram-negative ‘superbugs’ in patients. Dr. Eric Wenzler’s lab completed work on the pharmacokinetics of cefiderocol during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) that was used to support the first ever antimicrobial to have FDA approved CRRT dosing. Our faculty involved in natural products research and dietary supplements have been active. Dr. Gail Mahady’s group received funding to evaluate anthocyanin extracts for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in a novel transgenic fish model. Dr. Jeremy Johnson’s lab identified a novel cholesterol lowering mechanism with an extract from the bergamot fruit. In addition, the Johnson lab completed several pre-clinical pharmacokinetic studies of natural products and a Phase I clinical trial evaluating dose enhancing strategies for resveratrol.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021

The Education Team for the Department of Pharmacy Practice had a productive and innovative year despite the continued challenges of the pandemic. Through a collaborative effort of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and the College of Pharmacy, and the creativity of our faculty, we are pleased to announce that we will be offering four new didactic concentrations originating within the Department to supplement the PharmD curriculum. The goal of the concentrations is to create opportunities for our students to differentiate their area of interest in pharmacy and to highlight our departmental strengths including Acute Care Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care Pharmacy, Experimental Therapeutics and Clinical Research, and Pharmacy Administration and Leadership. We will begin accepting applications for admission to these concentrations from P2 students in September of 2023. Recognizing a need for a refreshed and positive outlook for 2021, the Department of Pharmacy Practice Seminar Series opened with an educational seminar designed to focus on the well-being of the faculty. During the program entitled, “Relighting the Fire: Recognizing Burnout and Reinvigorating You Through Mindfulness”, Drs. Brianna McQuade and Jeffrey Mucksavage reviewed the concept of burnout while offering an innovative approach to handling the challenges of the pandemic and professional life. Although the concept of “mindfulness” is a buzz word circulating our culture, few in the Department knew or fully grasped its practical applications. Culminating in a practical mindfulness exercise, this talk provided a fresh start to the year. Dr. McQuade continues to lead in this area offering an elective course entitled “Mindfulness Practice” to equip future pharmacists with the tools to manage stress and burnout in their personal and professional lives. While medical writing is a challenge for students and faculty, Dr. Katherine Sarna employed innovative teaching strategies in her medical writing elective that was worthy of the 2021 Frederick Siegel Innovative Teaching Award. Realizing the need for a more focused experience in medical writing in the curriculum, Dr. Sarna employed a peer-to-peer feedback assessment that provided opportunities to write and review the work of others to enhance the editorial skills and the process of

providing feedback to the students. The multiple rounds of writing and reviews were designed to simulate the recursive process common in manuscript preparation. Other members of the Department have also been recognized for excellence in teaching. We are happy to report the following faculty received teaching awards for 2021: Dr. Marlowe Djuric Kachlic received UIC’s Teaching Recognition Program Award from the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Drs. Scott Benken, Michael Gannon, Mathew Gimbar, Marc Mc Dowell, and Laura Meyer-Junco have been selected as Preceptors of the Year by the 2021 PharmD graduating class. Dr. Pat Fleming was awarded P3 Teacher of the Semester for Spring 2021 and Dr. Eric Wenzler was awarded P2 Teacher of the Semester for Spring 2021. Dr. Amanda Eades was named P1 Teacher of the Semester for Fall 2021. Drs. John Shilka, Elizabeth Van Dril, Katherine Lee Mosio, and Sheryl Mathew were awarded PhLAMES Faculty Advisors of the year for their mentorship to pharmacy students. In January 2021, the Department of Pharmacy Practice converted to a hybrid curriculum, requiring students to be on-site for essential patient care skills labs that could not be done remotely. With the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccine, we safely proceeded back to in-person instruction with the Fall of 2021. It was wonderful to see our students again in-person within our hallways. Of course, our IPPE and APPE preceptors continued to masterfully adapt their experiences throughout the year helping us to stay on track for all our IPPE and APPE student hours. We have to give a big shout-out to all of our teachers in the department who continue

ANNUAL REPORT 2021

to adapt their teaching to the ever- changing climate. Additionally, we want to thank all of our preceptors in and around the Chicago and Rockford areas who continue to go above and beyond for our students to ensure high quality experiences, despite the format forced upon us. Without the innovation and support of all involved we would have not been able to accomplish our mission of preparing the next generation of pharmacists in this challenging environment. Our Office of Experiential Education (OEE), saw quite a bit of change in 2021. In January 2021, Dr. Louise Parent Stevens retired, leaving some big shoes to fill. In May, Dr. Tara Driscoll took on the role of Co-Director of Introductory Pharmacy Experiences (IPPEs). Additionally, Dr. Sheila Allen took on the role of Senior Director of Experiential Education. In October, Kathryn Sawyer joined the OEE as a Patient Care Skills Lab Coordinator. It was a sigh of relief that we ended 2021 with a fully staffed office. Despite being understaffed at times, we came together as a team to support each other and cross cover. We were also fortunate to have other faculty join our courses and lend their clinical expertise: Dr. Margaret Choye (PHAR 515) and Dr. Nina Hyunh (PHAR 516). We continued to move our curriculum forward. With the help of Drs. Jennie Jarrett and Abigail Elmes, we incorporated Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) into our APPE Evaluation tools and hosted a preceptor conference in May 2021 to support the roll out. We now utilize EPAs within our performance evaluation tools across our entire experiential curriculum, from introductory to advanced. Additionally, our directors created a series of YouTube videos as preceptor training for each of our IPPEs. Finally, Megan Magnuson, Marissa King, and Dr. Allison Schriever built a map as an interactive tool to assist students in viewing site, rotation, and preceptor information. This has been a hit among students as they preference IPPE and APPE rotations and has further applications for both Dr. Nanc y Shapiro

accreditation and recruitment. The year was challenging as COVID was relentless, but our patient care skills lab faculty and IPPE/APPE preceptors were resilient, and we cannot thank them enough for their continued support during these challenging times. The Department of Pharmacy Practice also continued major partnerships with Jesse Brown Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago Medical Center, and John H. Stroger Hospital for both IPPE and APPE students. We are extremely grateful for these relationships that help us to continue to maintain student placements.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021

For 2021, COVID-19 continued to command a significant amount of our pharmacy staff’s time. Vaccine syringes continued to be drawn up in pharmacy for use in a variety of vaccination programs. Additionally, we assumed responsibility for preparation of monoclonal antibody infusions and dispensing of the oral antivirals for COVID-19 patients. Near the end of the year, the Omicron variant made it challenging to maintain sufficient staff numbers in our pharmacies. However, remaining staff stepped up and ensured that our normal scope of services was maintained.

PHARMACY SERVICES

PAGE 14

A major focus of our Ambulatory Pharmacy Services management team in 2021 was planning for a new outpatient pharmacy which will be located on the first floor of the Specialty Care Building (SCB). It will be a state-of-the-art pharmacy which will also provide services to an eight-bed operating room, procedure areas, and a variety of clinics. As part of this effort, we developed a plan on how to repurpose one of our pharmacies once the SCB pharmacy opens. The SCB is scheduled to see its first patient on September 26, 2022. An interesting project that several members of the Hospital Pharmacy Services management team were asked to assist with in 2021 was the development of a hospital at home program. Basically, this program identifies patients seen in the ED, for example, who have conditions (e.g., cellulitis, COPD exacerbation, heart failure) that can be treated at home just as effectively as if they were admitted to the hospital. The pharmacy component of this program will be run out of our central pharmacy and the program is expected to begin in mid-2022. After going live with Epic in September 2020, we were finally able to start taking advantage of its functionality in 2021. We have only scratched the surface of what Epic offers. Near the end of 2021, there was a reorganization of the C-suite in the hospital. My reporting line for hospital pharmacy services changed from the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to the newly created Chief Clinical Officer (CCO), as the COO position was eliminated. Finally, we successfully recruited into our PGY2 residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership once again. Our resident, Dr. Heather Jarvis, brought a strong background in retail pharmacy which we have already put to good use.

MEDICATION SAFETY & QUALITY TEAM

PAGE 16

The Pharmacy Medication Safety and Quality Team is involved in a variety of medication and patient safety activities that support organizational and departmental quality, safety, and regulatory goals. Team members participate in and/or chair a variety of committees, taking the lead in identifying and addressing medication and patient safety issues. Organizational compliance activities include barcode medication scanning, the use of two patient identifiers, and the Medication System Review Committee’s Zero Harm initiative: decrease patient-related harm from hypoglycemic events in patients receiving insulin. Department activities include auditing of key operational processes to identify problems and improve the customer (i.e., nurses and providers) and patient experience. The team uses voluntary error reporting, routine auditing and observation, prospective failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and other methods to evaluate the safety of the medication use process. More recently, systems of automated adverse event detection (e.g., trigger tools) have been incorporated into the safety evaluation process. Each of these sources of information inform process improvements that prevent future errors and improve the reliability of the medication use process. These process improvements can include workflow analysis and revision; EHR modifications that improve accuracy and efficiency; policy and guideline development and revision; and staff education. The team continues to be actively involved in teaching and precepting activities. These include coordination of the Patient Safety and Research Methodology courses; precepting P4 students as well as PGY1 and PGY2 resident rotation projects and seminars; and provision of lectures and

PAGE 17

seminars throughout the UIC Health Sciences Colleges. The team is also actively involved in scholarly activities, including the presentation of quality improvement related research in the form of abstracts, posters, invited presentations and publications. Some notable achievements for 2021 include the development of a communication system for documenting pharmacy resident on-call activities and participation in emergencies; the development and implementation of an e-communication tool to disseminate important medication information to appropriate groups throughout UI Health, taking a leadership role in spearheading improved compliance with barcode medication administration; and receiving best poster recognition for the team’s quality improvement project on the use of a hypoglycemia trigger tool. In addition, in July of this year, Dr. Kay Yamamoto joined the team as Coordinator, Medication Safety and Quality.

COVID-19 VACCINATION PROGRAM

PAGE 18

When the FDA granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for COVID-19 vaccines in late 2020, members of the pharmacy staff at UI Health and faculty in the College of Pharmacy (COP) played integral roles in the many vaccination programs implemented. A major request by hospital leadership was for pharmacy to draw up the COVID-19 vaccine into syringes so that it would be ready to administer as needed and allow a greater number of people to be vaccinated in a given time period. Drs. Matthew Gimbar, Janet Hinkes and Elizabeth Micke assumed responsibility for the operational aspects of this request. Their leadership in making sure that COVID-19 vaccine syringes were prepared and available was invaluable in ensuring the success of the many vaccination programs. They, along with colleagues in Hospital Pharmacy Services, trained staff on vaccine storage, handling, and preparation and provided input on needed Electronic Health Record build to support the programs. Vaccination efforts began in December 2020 in the UIC College of Pharmacy for healthcare essential workers, staff, and students. COVID-19 vaccinations for the UI Health patient population and general public began in February 2021 at the Credit Union 1 Arena. A dedicated pharmacy work area was established at the arena adjacent to the basketball court and isolated from the vaccine administration stations. The logistics of doing this required a coordinated effort by members of hospital pharmacy’s leadership team.

At its prime, the pharmacy at the Arena was preparing close to 2000 syringes daily. Staffing the pharmacy was a challenge and was accomplished using agency pharmacists and technicians, hospital pharmacy staff, student pharmacist volunteers and faculty volunteers from the COP. Dean Schumock, Pharmacy Practice Head Dr. Nutescu, and Pharmacy Director, Dr. Donnelly all spent time in the pharmacy assisting in various aspects of syringe preparation. In late July, the vaccination program at the Arena ended and was moved to UI Health’s Eye and Ear Infirmary and University Village Clinics. Pediatric (age 5-11) vaccinations were added in November upon EUA by the FDA. For 2021, approximately 163,000 vaccinations were administered, the majority prepared by pharmacy. The COVID-19 vaccination efforts in the pharmacy remain a team effort made possible by all members of the pharmacy staff. All have played an important role in making sure vaccines reach patients safely and efficiently. The vaccine operation represents UIH’s contribution to the global vaccination effort to combat the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The pharmacists maintain a collaborative practice with the Department of Neurosurgery. Furthermore, they provide consultative services to the Neurocritical Care, General Neurology, and Stroke Neurology services. The aim is to proactively optimize drug management, facilitate collaborative clinical decision making, provide education to medical/surgical/pharmacy trainees, minimize medication adverse events, and ensure appropriate transitions of care. UI Health is a designated Comprehensive Stroke Center and admits a majority of both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients each year. In addition, we treat patients with acute neurological conditions such as status epilepticus, brain tumors, and central nervous system infections. Pharmacists routinely round with residents from neurosurgery and neurology as well as with attending neurointensivists on the most critically ill patients. We are involved in protocol development, establishing acute stroke guidelines for the hospital, implementing education and training for Code Stroke pharmacy responders, and reviewing metrics for timely thrombolytic and antithrombotic reversal practices in accordance with accreditation standards. We are actively involved in leadership positions within the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS), an international, interprofessional organization dedicated to the care of patients with acute neurological conditions. Dr. Tesoro is currently serving on the Board of Directors as well as the Executive Committee. Dr. Mucksavage is currently serving as the Chair-Elect of the NCS Pharmacy Section. Mile Square is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with a mission to provide quality health care, regardless of a person’s ability to pay for services. Dr. Daphne Smith Marsh is the clinical pharmacist/ Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) providing diabetes management at the main and Cicero clinic locations. Referrals are received from physicians and nurse practitioners for lifestyle modification (including gestational diabetes), device education and medication therapy management through the clinical pharmacist diabetes protocol. During 2021, the diabetes service primarily provided telehealth visits, including patients enrolled in the NIH grant study “mHealth for Diabetes Adherence Support.” The clinical pharmacist also works with the Endocrinology Clinic at Mile Square. Dr. Smith Marsh helps to manage over 300 diabetes patients in the Mile Square network. In a recent study of her work, she documented an 11% decrease from baseline A1C in patients who had three or more visits with her. This correlates to an absolute reduction of approximately 1.5%. Dr. Smith Marsh lectures on diabetes management in several core and elective courses within the College, teaches in the UIC medical, nursing, and dietetic programs and students from the University of Malta. She coordinates the Clinical Aspects of Diabetes Mellitus elective course, where pharmacy students have the unique opportunity through a “diabetes experience” to self-monitor blood glucose, document nutrition and physical activity, take placebo “metformin”, inject saline as “insulin” during a 10-day period, journaling and reflecting on how the assignment impacted their view of diabetes management.

MEDICATION REVIEW AND ACADEMIC DETAILING A new law requires the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (IL-HFS) to partner with UIC College of Pharmacy to implement an Academic Detailing (AD) Program. Academic detailing is one-onone education for the prescriber targeting their specific needs. The focus of this new legislation is to provide outreach education to prescribers on chronic diseases such as pain, smoking cessation, asthma, diabetes and many more. This program was implemented in 2020 and reaches prescribers across the State of Illinois. In addition to conducting AD visits, the Medication Review and Academic Detailing Unit focuses on reviewing medications in higher risk patients in Medicaid. UIC pharmacists review medications in those patients taking more than four prescriptions per month chronically.

UIC Rockford Faculty Launch New Post Graduate Training Opportunities. Pharmacy Practice faculty on the UIC Health Sciences Campus Rockford have been hard at work, teaming up with area healthcare partners to expand our clinical reach via exciting new residency training opportunities. In 2021, the campus graduated it’s first PGY1 resident who has gone on to represent the program well in a clinical ambulatory position in Wisconsin. Vice Dean Kevin Rynn feels, “Part of developing excellent training programs is to see our residents move on to be excellent representatives for the College, graduates serve as a great recruitment tool training students who will seek out our residency programs in the future.” Under the direction and coordination of Drs. Chris Schriever and Annette Hays the Rockford Campus PGY1 program completed a successful ASHP site visit, granted four years of accreditation by the organization. Program Director Dr. Schriever said, “I’m proud of the faculty involved in the program for showing our accrediting body what a great training opportunity we provide new pharmacy graduates. We hope to expand in the coming years.” Clinical partners Crusader Community Health, UIC’s Miles Square, L.P. Johnson Family Health Center, KSB Hospital, UW Health, and OSF HealthCare are pleased to work with the UIC resident. So much in fact that the College is now partnering with OSF St. Anthony Medical Center to begin its second program, a PGY2 in Emergency Medicine. Research and clinical training opportunities have been expanding university wide with its partner OSF HealthCare. OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford currently serves as a great training site for students under the direction of OSF pharmacy practice faculty Drs. Marianne Pop and Oksana Kucher. It made sense to collaborate with this Magnet recognized Level I regional trauma, burn, and comprehensive stroke center to develop the College’s second residency program in Northern Illinois’ Stateline region. “With Drs. Pop and Kucher leading this PGY2 in Emergency Medicine we are guaranteed success,” said Vice Dean Rynn. The program has successful recruited the inaugural resident through the ASHP match program with a planned accreditation visit during the first year of the program. Program Director Dr. Pop shares, “We strive to foster a passion for teaching in our graduates, as emergency medicine pharmacy services continue to grow world-wide,

PAGE 29

we know our graduates will create and provide pharmacy services for patient populations that need additional resources.” New residency programs are crucial in meeting the demand of pharmacy graduates and the profession. The College of Pharmacy has always been ahead of the curve in developing future leaders in the profession; this now includes residency graduates from both campuses under the direction of an exceptional group of Pharmacy Practice faculty at UIC Health Sciences Campus Rockford.
