WELCOME The Department of Pharmacy Practice is an academic department within the University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy (Chicago and Rockford Campuses). The Department is also a service unit that provides pharmacy services within the UI Health and affiliated sites. Among the most comprehensive units of its type in the United States, the Department is comprised of the faculty and staff who are teachers, scholars and/or practitioners.

MESSAGE FROM THE

HEAD

Dear Colleagues and Friends of Pharmacy Practice, The Department had another exceptional year, and our faculty, staff and trainees continued their significant contributions to our education, research, service, and entrepreneurship mission. We made significant progress on our 5-year (2021-2025) Strategic Plan and Advancing Racial Equity Plan, with 79% of our 77 objectives completed.

Seventy-four faculty, staff and trainees joined our department this past year. (See page 8 of the report.) Dr. Jennifer Halsey joined us as the Director of our Ambulatory Pharmacy Services/Clinical Assistant Professor, and Dr. Jennifer Phillips joined us as the Director of our Drug Information Group/ Clinical Professor. Three faculty members were promoted this past academic year, Melissa Badowski to Clinical Professor, Jessica Tilton to Clinical Associate Professor, and Sheila Allen to Clinical Associate Professor. Dr. Andy Donnelly was promoted to Executive Director Pharmacy Services, Dr. John Garofalo to Director Clinical Pharmacy Services, and Ms. Mary Moody to Director of Medicaid Services. In addition, several of our faculty were promoted to leadership roles within our various service units. See page 12 of the report for a highlight of our service line promotions. I would also like to recognize the two faculty members who retired this past year: Connie Larson (40 years at UIC) and Lana Hammad (32 years at UIC).

Many of our faculty received both internal and external recognition and awards for their accomplishments and professional contributions. Drs. Abigail Elmes, Alex Infante, Eden Keller, and Jennie Jarrett were awarded the 2023 Departmental Paper of the Year, Sheri Wylie-Buergel was recognized with the Administrative Staff Excellence Award, Dr. Laura Meyer Junco was the recipient of the Clinical Practice Award, Dr. James Lee received the Departmental Service Award, and Dr. Jeremy Johnson was recognized with as the Investigator of the Year.

Dr. Zackery Bulman was recognized with three significant awards for his research program, including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy New Investigator Award, the University of Illinois Chicago Researcher of the Year-Rising Star Award, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists Early Career Investigator Award. Dr. Lori Wilken was named ACCP Fellow; Dr. Hailey Soni was recognized as Preceptor of the Year by the 2023 graduating class and also selected as the recipient of the Frank P. Paloucek Preceptor of the Year Award by the 2022-2023 residency class; Drs. Michelle Martin, Heidi Olson, Kay Yamamoto, Amanda Eades, and Christina Haaf were recognized as PhLAMES Faculty Mentors of the Year; Dr. Brianna McQuade Hudak was recognized with the Interprofessional Teacher of the Year Award by the UIC Family Medicine residents for AY 2022-2023; Drs. Sheila Allen, Allison Schriever, Marlow Djuric Kachlic, Jennie Jarrett, Tara Driscoll, Abigail Elmes, Amanda Eades, Kathryn Sawyer, Asish Biju received the UIC COP 2022-2023 Frederick P. Siegel Innovative Teaching Award. Please see the “In the News Section” of our report starting on page 45 for many more faculty accomplishments, awards, and highlights.

Our grant-funded research has increased by 71% from the previous year to over $6 million with 28 active grants and over 120 active IRB protocols. Our research continues to be funded by the National Institute of Health, National Cancer Institute, the US Department of Health and Human Services, Illinois Department of Public Health and Medicaid Services, American Heart Association and several additional foundations and industry partners. The faculty and trainees published 450 journal articles throughout the year and presented their research at several regional, national, and international meetings.

Our postgraduate training programs continued a strong trajectory with another 34 residents and fellows completing our programs. To date, over 1,000 residents and fellows graduated from our programs, and we are gearing up for our 55th year celebration since the inception of our 1st residency program. We are planning a celebration reception at the 2024 ASHP Midyear Meeting in New Orleans on December 8th, 2024, and hope to see you all there! While this report isn’t a comprehensive list of everything, we’ve accomplished this past year, it gives a glimpse into the productivity and many successes of our faculty, staff, and trainees. I’m looking forward to continuing our work with another strong year in 2024, to further advance the educational, research, service, and entrepreneurship mission of the Department.

Retirees Two faculty members retired from UIC this year. Thank you for all your outstanding years of service to the Department!

Dr. Connie Larson, Clinical Assistant Professor/Clinical Pharmacist, retired from UIC at the end of March. Connie had been a member of our Hospital Pharmacy Services team for approximately 40 years, starting as an extern and then holding a variety of positions, most recently Senior Associate Director of Safety and Quality and Medication Safety Officer. She was one of the first Medication Safety Officers in the country. During her tenure at UIC she made significant contributions to our medication safety and quality efforts.

Dr. Lana Hammad, Clinical Instructor/Clinical Pharmacist in Hospital Pharmacy, reitred from UIC after 32 years of dedicated service. Before Lana joined the department, she worked as a student extern and graduated from UIC COP.

RESEARCH In 2023, research funding by faculty in the Department of Pharmacy Practice increased 71% from 2022 with total awards of $6,442,620. The total number of active grants in Pharmacy Practice was 28 with 9 Federal Awards and 19 non-Federal Awards. In 2023, our faculty had more than 120 active IRB protocols contributing to our department’s research goals.

Research projects in our department include clinical/translational research and assessing innovative pharmacy practice models and health services outcomes. Work from our department was published in high impact journals including 3 papers in Nature Communications with Dr. Zackery Bulman’s Lab contributing 2 papers on anti-microbial drug resistance and 1 publication by Dr. Jeremy Johnson’s Lab on novel agents for schistosomiasis. Dr. Paola Rosas’s Lab reported on the role of P21 in sinus node function in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology in the hope of identifying new therapeutic strategies. Drs. Robert DiDomenico and Jennifer Jarrett published their work on evaluating ambulatory pharmacists and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Bridge 2 Faculty Scholar, Dr. Tristesse Burton identified associations between fecal short-chain fatty acids, plasma inflammatory cytokines and dietary markers with depression and anxiety with this work published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Our faculty are recognized by their peers through awards and funding. Dr. Zack Bulman continues his R01 funded research on new antibiotic combinations for the treatment of drug- resistant superbugs.

The Johnson Lab continues its work on identifying novel agents for prostate cancer with an R37 MERIT award from the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Tristesse Burton was invited to share her research at the annual BIRCHW (Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health) meeting at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bulman was also recognized with three significant awards for his

research program this year, including the American College of Clinical Pharmacy New Investigator Award, the University of Illinois Chicago Researcher of the Year-Rising Star Award, and the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists Early Career Investigator Award. Dr. Jennifer Jarrett secured funding to expand care models related to substance use and addictions.

Looking forward to 2024, our objective is to continue to grow and hire additional research focused tenure track faculty. In addition, we are looking forward to hearing back on the grant applications that were submitted in 2023.

EDUCATION

The Education Team in the Department of Pharmacy Practice had a productive year. Our first cohort of 14 P2 students was accepted into our new concentrations beginning Fall 2023. Thank you to the concentration leads and co-leads (respectively): Acute Care Pharmacy (Jeff Mucksavage, Marianne Pop); Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (Ellen Uppuluri, Anitha Nagelli); Experimental Therapeutics and Clinical Research (Zackery Bulman, Keri Kim); and Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (Andy Donnelly, Kay Yamamoto). The poster "Development of Six New Concentrations at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy" was presented at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Annual 2023 Meeting by Kristen Goliak, Tom TenHoeve, JoAnn Stubbings, Nancy Shapiro, Simon Pickard, Douglas Thomas, and Glen Schumock.

Teacher of the Semester awards were granted in 2023 to Dr. Laura Meyer-Junco (P3 Spring Semester), Dr. Eric Wenzler (P2 Spring Semester), Dr. Amanda Eades (P1 Fall Semester), and Dr. Ajna Hamidovic (P3 Fall Semester). Congratulations to these distinguished pharmacists for their dedication and commitment to the educational development of our graduates.

We completed a directory of over 1,000 names of all past pharmacy residents and fellows that trained at UIC. We are planning a 55-year reunion at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in 2024.

Many new teaching and assessment initiatives are at the forefront of the collaborative spirit of the Department of Pharmacy Practice.

Recognizing a need for continued didactic education for students in their fourth year, members of the department collaborated with the College of Pharmacy to develop a longitudinal self-directed study program designed to assist students with NAPLEX exam preparation. Dr. Mat Thambi was named a Curriculum Leader for the P4 year working to implement this program and keep students on-track for success. In collaboration with members of the Office of Academic Affairs, Drs. Jeffrey Mucksavage and Scott Benken began a comprehensive assessment of item-writing by our faculty in our therapeutics course series. This work has been instrumental for identifying flawed assessment questions and providing targeted faculty development to improve item quality.

The Department is also proud to announce that faculty are recipients of the Frederick P. Siegel Innovative Teaching Award. Our Experiential Education Team, Drs. Sheila Allen, Allison Schriever, Marlow Djuric Kachlic, Jennie Jarrett, Tara Driscoll, Abigail Elmes-Patel, Amanda Eades, Kathryn Sawyer, Asish Biju and Megan Magnuson won the award for the project titled, “Gradescope Integration into Didactic Experiential Education Curriculum.” These innovators integrated Gradescope, a submission, grading, and analytic online platform that utilizes artificial intelligence and user interface workflow, into their courses to enhance standardization and efficiency in grading while providing students timely, detailed feedback. Their work is being disseminated to other course series because of its ability to influence the design and grading of assessments and help with quality improvements.

EDUCATION The Office of Experiential Education (OEE) is comprised of Drs. Sheila Allen (Senior Director Experiential Education), Allison Schriever (Director Experiential Education), Marlowe DjuricKachlic (IPPE Director), Tara Driscoll (IPPE Director), Amanda Eades (Patient Care Skills Lab Coordinator), Kathryn Sawyer (Patient Care Skill Lab Coordinator), Asish Biju (Patient Care Skills Lab Faculty), Jennifer Casamassimo (Program Coordinator) and Rhonda Larkin (Office Administrator).

These are some of our accomplishments in 2023:

Sheila Allen and colleagues from the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) Pharmacy Collaborative presented a webinar for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Experiential Education Section on an “Accommodation Crossroads in Experiential Education.”

Dr. Kathryn Sawyer, principal investigator, and Dr. Jennie Jarrett, mentor/advisor, received new funding from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) New Investigator Award for a one-year project titled “Utilizing Transformative Learning Theory to Enhance Professional Identity Formation.”

We held our annual preceptor conference entitled “Precepting Through the Generations” which was attended by over 100 preceptors. During the conference, we recognized Vincent Soriano from John H Stroger, Jr Hospital of Cook County as our External Preceptor of the Year and Hailey Soni from UI Health as our Internal Preceptor of the Year. We are thankful for all our preceptors, as we truly could not do it without

OEE launched a new experiential management system this year, CORE, a new student personal records management system, Castlebranch, and a new learning management system for both preceptors and students, CEimpact. Thank you to all our preceptors and site coordinators for their patience and feedback during the transition.

Sheila Allen and colleagues published a white paper titled “Overview of Implementation and Learning Outcomes of Simulation in Pharmacy Education,” in the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. (doi: 10.1002/jac5.1784).

OEE was awarded the University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy Frederic P. Siegel Innovative Teaching Award for the Integration of Gradescope into our Skills Laboratory and Experiential Education Curriculum.

At the AACP Annual Meeting, Drs. Sheila Allen and Marlowe Djuric Kachlic and colleagues were invited to give a podium presentation on “Defining Remediation in Experiential Education: The Story of Three Different Institutions.” Dr. Amanda Eades and BTAA colleagues were also invited to give a podium presentation on “Finding the Sweet Spot with Essential Pharmacy Skills: Current Practice, APPE Readiness, and Curricular Bloat.” Drs. Tara Driscoll and Abigail Elmes-Patel gave an invited podium presentation on “Back-to-the-Future, Assessment-Style: Unique Utilization of Technology for Layered Assessment & Efficient Feedback in Skills Labs.”

Drs. Tara Driscoll, Megan Magnuson, and Allison Schriever received a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (STOL) Grant sponsored by AACP and the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) for their project titled “Impact of Transformative Learning Reflection on Professional Identity Formation.”

SERVICES

In 2023, a variety of services and programs were either expanded or implemented. The use of bar code medication preparation technology for eligible pharmacy prepared dosage forms is now at 90%, a significant improvement from its baseline of 45%. Kudos to our pharmacists and technicians in our central pharmacy for making this happen.

Our external drug diversion software was implemented by our Opioid Stewardship and Drug Diversion team, under the leadership of Dr. Paul Stranges. The information provided by this software far exceeds what was previously available to us internally. Our discharge medication program prescription capture rate is now at an all-time high of 55%, a testament to the ongoing efforts of our discharge medication team to grow this program. Our Outpatient Clinical Pharmacy Services (OCPS) team, led by Drs. Jewel Younge and Nazia Babul, began offering pain consults as well as wellness consults out of the Specialty Care Building (SCB) pharmacy.

The team also began providing hypertension education in December. In late 2023, a new employee recognition program was launched by our Pharmacy Operations Council to allow the excellent work being done by our pharmacists and technicians to be recognized by their peers and managers. Also, we were asked to develop a prescription medication program for migrants seen in the Emergency Department (ED) who need medications when our outpatient pharmacies are closed. Thanks to Dr. Matt Gimbar and his team, our ED clinical pharmacists, and PGY1 residents, for implementing this program quite quickly. It has greatly benefitted this patient population.

For the first time in many years, we had three new inpatient clinical pharmacist positions approved in 2023 – infectious disease (ID), surgery, and medicine. The new ID clinical pharmacist will work with our incumbent clinical pharmacist in addressing the ID related metrics of the Quality and Safety Transformation (QST) project (e.g., CLABSI rate, postop sepsis rate), ensuring TJC and CMS requirements for an antimicrobial stewardship program are met, and expand the current coverage of transplant and HIV patients. The medicine clinical pharmacist will be assigned to the new hospitalist medicine team.

The surgery clinical pharmacist, which we have not had since 2008, will round with the surgery services and provide targeted services such as TPN writing; vancomycin, aminoglycoside, and warfarin dosing; and medication education. The ID and medicine positions have been filled, and the surgery position will be posted in Spring 2024. We also hired an Investigational Drug Services (IDS) pharmacist which was critically needed given the increase in the IDS’s workload.

Since hospital and ambulatory pharmacy services have grown significantly in size and complexity over the years, changes to the organizational structure were made in 2023 to ensure we had the right leadership to accommodate this continued growth. In March, I was promoted to Executive Director of Pharmacy to focus more on the strategic direction of pharmacy services. The Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Services position was created to oversee our seven outpatient pharmacies. We recruited Dr. Jennifer Halsey for this position and although she has only been with us since mid-September, she has made a significant impact already. In addition, Dr. John Garofalo was promoted to Director of Clinical Pharmacy Services (previously Senior Associate Director). John will have two Associate Directors (new positions) assisting him with the sixty-plus clinical pharmacists that historically have reported to him. I anticipate several other organizational structure changes in 2024.

In March 2023, Dr. Connie Larson retired after 40 years of service to the organization, first as an extern and then a pharmacist. Connie was our Senior Associate Director for Medication Safety and Quality as well as the Medication Safety Officer for the hospital and clinics. Over the years, Connie and her team were instrumental in leading medication safety initiatives and ensuring ongoing compliance with various external regulatory agencies. Upon Connie’s retirement, Dr. Adam Bursua assumed leadership of the unit and the team continues to function at a high level.

Finally, I have my first combined PGY1/2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) resident, Dr. Vinh Thai. Vinh is halfway through his first year and is doing extremely well. I sense that he will be setting the bar quite high for all future residents. Near the end of 2023, Dr. Kay Yamamoto became the Assistant Residency Program Director for our two-year HSPAL residency. Kay is one of my former PGY2 HSPAL residency graduates and I am looking forward to working with her as we continue to improve our residency program.

DRUG SERVICES

The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) is a unit within Hospital Pharmacy Services. The IDS is comprised of 3 pharmacists: Drs. David Chan, Coordinator, Rebeca Gansari and Mike Pacini; 1 technician specialist: Margie Villarreal; and 1 pharmacy extern: Dennis Nwabudike. As part of the Human Subjects Protection Program at the University of Illinois, the IDS assists and supports investigators in meeting their obligations in conducting research when drugs are the focus of the clinical research or when drugs are prescribed to study participants as part of the research. The IDS assures appropriate drug receipt, storage, control, handling, accountability, and information access for hospitalized patients. In the outpatient or clinic settings, the requirements of the investigator and the design of the study will determine the extent of participation by the IDS in compliance with institutional policy, The Joint Commission, and state and federal standards.

A summary of services provided include: Research Activities – Consultation with investigators, study monitors, and sponsors The IDS provides support and review of protocols for clinical trials for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission. In addition, the IDS meets regularly with study sponsors and monitors to verify that all study drug preparation and dispensing procedures are followed.

Special Compounding and Other Support The IDS helps design and operationalize placebocontrolled studies by providing blinded medication dosage forms, developing randomization tables, and assisting with any other special compounding or dispensing needs.

Drug Handling and Control The IDS assumes the responsibility of ordering and handling shipments of investigational agents. In addition, it provides the proper storage conditions, including segregation, security, temperature, light, moisture, and sanitation.

Clinical Services Clinical services are focused on providing drug information. This involves pharmacy staff in-service training, intradepartmental education, patient counseling, checking for drug/drug interactions, and adverse drug event reporting. The IDS develops study specific order sheets and engages Hospital Pharmacy Information Technology to build investigational drug orders within the institution’s electronic health record for dispensing study medications in the outpatient and inpatient settings, respectively.

IDS attended no less than 38 Beacon Treatment Plan Validation Sessions.

Maintaining Accurate Records and Information Access – Accurate records are maintained by the IDS for all drugs dispensed primarily utilizing Vestigo, a Web-based management system.

Information related to the investigational drug will be available to all health care providers involved in the patient’s care.

The IDS workload continues to increase. Currently, IDS has 159 active studies, with 103 of them being oncology related. For the calendar year 2023, IDS completed 77 ancillary reviews, with 57 of these studies conducted under an IND. IDS assumed the medication-related responsibilities for 60 of these studies, which involved 90 products. There are 84 studies in various stages of opening, with 52 being oncology. In recognition of this ever-increasing study volume, the IDS received approval for another pharmacist and technician to expand its current staffing complement.

Finally, the IDS staff takes an active role in the education and training of APPE students and pharmacy residents. All PGY1 residents on their administration rotation are oriented to the Service by the IDS team. In 2023, the IDS team precepted 3 APPE students and 2 PGY2 (oncology and drug information) pharmacy residents.

EMERGENCY

MEDICINE

Whether it’s an emerging pandemic, the opioid epidemic, or an influx of migrant patients, the UIC Emergency Medicine (EM) Pharmacy Team serves alongside physicians and nurses in the Emergency Department (ED) to take care of some of Chicago’s most vulnerable patients.

The ED at UI Health is a level 2 trauma center and comprehensive stroke center that hosts approximately 50,000 adult and pediatric patients each year. Since the late 1970s, the ED at UI Health has integrated pharmacists into its care model, making it one of the longest standing programs in the country. Dr. Renee Petzel Gimbar has led the program for over a decade, and in late summer of 2023, Dr. Drew Posen joined the team expanding pharmacist coverage and efforts in teaching and research.

With collaborating physicians, the EM Pharmacy Team participates at the bedside to use their expertise in the optimization of medication therapy across the spectrum of disease at all levels of acuity. Each day brings different challenges, from emergency code responses to discharge medication counseling to emergency medication preparation, administration, and titration. The EM pharmacy team also manages daily culture follow up for all ED patients discharged from the department as part of their antimicrobial stewardship efforts. This involves adjusting antibiotic regimens and counseling patients on lab results as part of comprehensive care and to reduce unnecessary readmissions.

This past year brought a new challenge to the UI Health ED as thousands of migrants from Central and South America arrived in Chicago. These vulnerable patients, without shelter, money, or transportation often have no means to obtain medications outside of the emergency department. The EM Pharmacy team recognized that need and engaged administrators, as the lack of federal, state, or local funding made it difficult to assist these patients with medications. They developed a process that functions 24 hours a day to ensure these patients have their medications and proper counseling before they are discharged from the ED. Drs. Petzel Gimbar and Posen are also involved in EM medication guideline development, quality improvement, education for multidisciplinary staff, and improvement of information technology within the electronic medical record, to ensure appropriate medication use, especially in fast-paced emergency situations.

The EM pharmacists and physicians collaborate on research. Dr. Petzel Gimbar is primary investigator for a study investigating a rescue therapy option for hypoglycemic patients. She has also been a coinvestigator on a 5-year NIH-funded study addressing hypertension in the ED. Dr. Posen is developing several research projects, including investigations into labetalol’s hemodynamic effects in stroke patients and patient-reported symptom relief following treatment of dysrhythmia.

course within the EM physician residency program. They precept PGY1 and PGY2 residents, APPE, and IPPE students. Each year, under the direction of Dr. Petzel Gimbar, the EM Pharmacy Team trains a PGY2 EM pharmacy resident. These residents are the next generation of EM pharmacy specialists, providing care in EDs across the country. Drs. Petzel Gimbar and Posen serve as mentors for pharmacy residents’ seminars and research projects, and pharmacy students' research. They also engage student organizations for education and discussion related to emergency medicine topics like COVID response and naloxone distribution. Internationally, Dr. Petzel Gimbar is assisting with efforts to develop EM pharmacy services at Singapore General Hospital. She visited the Singapore General Hospital in November, providing insight into starting EM pharmacy services. In Fall 2023, the EM Pharmacy Team hosted a visiting pharmacist.

The EM Pharmacy Team is actively involved with regional, national, and international pharmacy organizations. Dr. Petzel Gimbar is part of the Antidote Collective for the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology and spoke at the annual North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology. She serves as a coordinator/moderator for the yearly American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) Total Tox Course. In 2022, she was a recipient of the ACMT Voluntary Service Recognition Award. She provided education to international audiences. In 2023, she spoke at The Pharmacy Society of Singapore meeting in Singapore, the Asian Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences Conference, and Hanoi University Pharmacy School in Hanoi, Vietnam.

INTERNAL

MEDICINE The Inpatient Medicine Pharmacy Team has recently expanded to seven members and includes both Internal Medicine and Hepatology. The Internal Medicine services have increased from five teaching services with the addition of two Hospitalist Medical Teams (HMTs).

One of the HMT services admits only renal transplant patients who are over a year from their last transplant. The Internal Medicine teaching services are covered by Peggy Choye, Emily Hanners, Julie Jun, Hailey Soni, and Mat Thambi, while Annesti Elmasri who recently completed a PGY2 in Transplant, covers the HMT services. Both Drs. Hanners and Elmasri have recently joined the team in November, replacing Mike Koronkowski and Charles McPherson. The goal of our team is to ensure the optimal use of medications in our patients to achieve their desired health outcomes. To accomplish this, we round with the medical teams and work closely with them throughout the day to proactively manage our patients’ medications collaboratively.

The Internal Medicine services have created and maintained a transitions of care program for many years, called RxCARES. RxCARES is a student-run service that provides a structure for APPE students to perform medication histories, discharge counseling, follow-up phone calls after discharge, medication reconciliations, and note writing, along with a place to document their interventions. During the past year, our RxCARES APPE students have cared for over 200 patients for whom they have made over 600 changes to their documented medications prior to admit, almost 200 changes to their inpatient medications, 100 changes to their discharge prescriptions, and 100 successful follow-up phone calls.

Through this program, students get to know their patients from admission to discharge and patients are generally very pleased that someone who knows their medications and conditions has called them after discharge and can help them with any issues they have with their prescriptions and home medications.

The Medicine Team is very involved in teaching. Collectively, we teach over 30 hours of lectures in the College of Pharmacy (COP) along with their associated recitations. Drs. Schmiedeskamp and Jun are also involved in lecturing internationally at places such as Hong Kong and Malta. Drs. Jun and Schmiedeskamp are also course coordinators for two courses in the COP. Dr. Schmiedeskamp also lectures at the College of Medicine and College of Applied Health. Experiential teaching includes Introductory (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiential (APPE) students and we have precepted over 60 students in 2023. Our team is also very involved with our Pharmacy Practice Residents having precepted over 20 residents in 2023 and with members serving on the Residency Advisory Committee, Residency Seminar Committee, and Residency Teaching Program. Dr. Soni was also awarded the 2023 PGY-1 Resident Preceptor of the Year award.

The Medicine Team also contributes to the COP by serving in numerous administrative roles. Dr. Koronkowski serves as the COP Parliamentarian, chair of the Interprofessional Education & Collaborative Practice, chair of the Curriculum Assessment Committee, chair of the Ad Hoc By-Laws Committee, and as a member of the Strategic Planning Interprofessional Initiatives.

At the University level, Dr. Koronkowski serves on the Center for the Advancement of Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research (CAIPPER) and as the Pharmacy Liaison to the Office of the Vice Chancellor Steering Committee. Dr. Soni is the chair-elect of the Residency and Fellowship Students Preparation Committee and also serves on the Resident Seminar Committee and the Resident Advisory Committee. Dr. Thambi serves on the COP Admissions Committee, Resident Seminar Committee, Resident Teaching Program, Curriculum Leader Committee, Education Policy Committee, and is the NAPLEX Curriculum Leader.

In addition to the clinical services we provide to the University of Illinois Hospital (UIH), the Medical Team serves on several UIH committees. Dr Koronkowski is a member of the Falls Committee which will soon be starting a pilot that performs medication reconciliation in patients with falls or at risk for falls. He is also a member of the Community Assessment of Needs (UI-CAN). Dr. Hanners serves on the Pharmacy Operations Council. Dr. Choye is the co-chair of the Glycemic Control Committee. Dr. Jun serves on the Medication Reconciliation Committee and leads the Leapfrog group on medication reconciliation. Dr. Thambi is a voting member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and serves as the team leader for the Medicine Team.

The Inpatient Medicine Team supports the pharmacy profession through various pharmacy organizations as well. Dr. Koronkowski serves on the Executive Board of the Illinois Department on Aging: Older Adult Services Advisory Committee, the Illinois Falls Coalition Advisory Board, and the National Advisory Board for the Center for Health and Social Care Integration (CHaSCI). Dr. Hanners and Dr. Soni serve on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Adult Medicine (AMED) PRN as an External Affairs Committee member and Training and Travel Awards Committee member, respectively. Dr. Soni also serves on the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) Department of Educational Affairs Committee. Dr. Thambi serves on the IPhA Conference and Education Committee.

DRUG INFORMATION

GROUP

The Drug Information Group (DIG) had a productive year in 2023. There were many kudos to celebrate. Dr. Justyna Frydrych graduated from her PGY-2 Drug Information residency. Dr. Jessica Elste received a 5-year service award and Dr. Courtney Krueger received a 20-year service award. Drs. Rachel Brunner and Honey Joseph became board certified pharmacotherapy specialists.

This year brought several changes in leadership and structure to the group. Drs. Jessica Elste and Courtney Krueger served as interim Co-Directors until Dr. Jen Phillips joined as Director in February. Dr. Phillips is excited to share her extensive health-system pharmacy, academia, and leadership experience with the group. Additional changes this year include a modification of the leadership structure to incorporate 2 new coordinator positions, with Dr. Heather Ipema becoming the Education Coordinator and Dr. Courtney Krueger the Fee-for-Service Coordinator. In June, the group said farewell to Dr. Ryan Rodriguez, as he embarked on a new career adventure.

The group continued to build its external contract base, expanding work with several pharmaceutical industry and managed care partners in addition to responding to drug information requests, providing formulary services, updating drug information compendia, and completing various other projects for numerous active clients.

From a scholarship perspective, the group was very active, publishing independent and collaborative articles with other faculty and students in many journals including Blood, Blood Advances, European Journal of Haematology, Hospital Pharmacy, Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacy Practice News, and ICHP’s KeePosted.

The group was well represented at national conferences; Dr. Kathy Sarna presented a platform presentation at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) meeting and posters were presented at the AACP Annual Meeting, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting, and the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting.

Several members of the group served in leadership roles within pharmacy organizations. Dr. Michael Buege served as a committee member for the Oral Chemotherapy Collaborative for the Hematology Oncology Pharmacy Association. Dr. Rachel Brunner was a member of the ASHP New Practitioner’s Forum. Dr. Jen Phillips served as an IL delegate for the ASHP House of Delegates and a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Awards Committee. Drs. Rachel Brunner and Faria Munir held leadership positions within the ACCP DI PRN. The DIG continues to maintain its ongoing commitment to providing high-quality education to pharmacy students. Faculty coordinated and lectured in 2 required and 2 elective drug information courses, as well as several other non-drug information courses within the college. The group precepted the DIG PGY2 Drug Information resident and many APPE students and PGY1 residents. Faculty offer research electives for students and facilitated several recitations for students at the University of Malta. In addition, faculty provided valuable insight on educational committees within the college, including the Resident Research Committee (Dr. Michael Buege) and the NAPLEX Committee (Dr. Jen Phillips). Ms. Mary Moody Director, Medicaid Group The Medicaid Programs Unit is comprised of the previous Medicaid Prior Authorization (PA) Services group, the Medication Review and Academic Detailing (MRAD) group, Illinois ADVANCE academic detailing (AD) group, and Illinois DocAssist group.

The Unit had a productive year, and most of the Unit moved into a newly renovated space in the Benjamin Goldberg Research Center on campus.

All groups in the Medicaid Programs Unit are under project agreements with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (IL-HFS). The Unit totals 37 clinical pharmacists, 3 certified pharmacy technicians, 4 physicians, 6 psychiatrists, and 2 social workers located in Chicago and Springfield.

Prior Authorization Services The Unit's PA Services group develops policies for medication use and clinical approval criteria for non-preferred medications, reviews medication profiles of higher risk clients taking more than four prescriptions per month chronically, coordinates the Illinois Drugs and Therapeutics and Drug Utilization Review committees, and responds to proposed legislation and legislative inquiries for Illinois Medicaid Fee-For-Service programs.

In 2023, the Unit processed 113,692 PA/Four Prescription Policy requests and documented 294 outreach interventions with prescribers to review pharmacotherapy issues – a significant increase over 2022 due to the reinstatement of pre-COVID-19 programs/edits and the State’s recent coverage of non-citizen/immigrant populations. Additionally, pharmacists provided customer service and education regarding PA policies and billing issues for pharmacies and healthcare providers, attended appeal hearings, and precepted P-4 pharmacy students on rotation. Students on rotation were exposed to a variety of PA, medication use policy, and AD activities.

Academic Detailing Services In 2023, Illinois ADVANCE, the Unit’s legislatively required AD service, connected with several new healthcare organizations and providers, developed new material on trending topics such as buprenorphine prescribing and diabetes updates, and enhanced our social media presence with videos, fresh content and graphics, and new accounts on Instagram and Threads. Our pharmacists gave presentations at several meetings including NaRCAD’s Annual Global Conference, the Illinois Asthma Partnership Statewide Meeting, and many more. Academic detailers built ongoing relationships with medical residents across the Chicagoland area, including Northwestern Medicine in Lake Forest, Jackson Park Hospital on the south side of Chicago, and UIC Hospital in the Illinois medical district, to routinely provide information on the latest advancements in pharmacotherapy. The Unit continued work on the FDA Opioid REMS grant received in 2022 to virtually provide AD services nationwide to prescribers, pharmacists, and nurses on 9 opioid-related topics. A total of 1,444 in-person or virtual one-on-one visits were completed in 2023.

Doc Assist Service

The IL DocAssist Service is a free psychiatrist phone consultation, training, and referral service to assist primary care clinicians screen, diagnose, and treat mental health and substance use in children, adolescents up to age 21 years, and perinatal women. In 2023, the program provided 329 mental health consultations to healthcare providers across the state of Illinois with 40 follow-up consultations.

In 2023, IL DocAssist faculty focused on expansion of our network with school-based healthcare providers. Educational programs reached over 340 school nurses and social workers. A second focus was to expand access to resources and referral tools for our healthcare partners. Our website was updated in June 2023 to include these new resources and tools, and can be found at: illinoisdocassist.uic.edu Illinois DocAssist continues our work on HRSA Grant 21-122 American Rescue Plan Act – Pediatric Mental Health Care Access - New Area Expansion, which began in 2022. This 3-year grant aims to expand access to IL DocAssist consultation, resources, and education throughout the state by strengthening partnerships and collaboration with primary care entities and government agencies providing services to populations most in need.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES

GROUP

The Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Section has provided a wide range of scholarly, teaching, and clinical services to UIC and the Chicagoland area since its inception in 1996. The Section was founded by Co-directors Larry Danziger and Keith Rodvold. Dr. Rodvold is now UIC Distinguished Professor Emeritus. Dr. Danziger continues to provide leadership and vision for the Section.

The Section provides infectious diseases (ID) clinical pharmacy services to UI Health in the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Drs. Renata Smith, Rodrigo Burgos, Blake Max, and Emily Drweiga provide care for approximately 1,300 HIV-positive individuals in the main campus HIV/ID clinic and five HIV outreach clinics in Chicago neighborhoods with the highest incidence of HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, and limited access to healthcare.

Furthermore, the Section’s HIV pharmacotherapy group provides care to 26 correctional facilities within the Illinois Department of Corrections system via an interdisciplinary HIV telemedicine clinic, led by Dr. Melissa Badowski. The HIV Telemedicine Clinic began in July 2010 and serves approximately 700 individuals in custody annually. In 2013, the telemedicine group was granted a technology award by the American Academy of HIV Medicine and the Institute for Technology in Health Care, recognizing the innovative use of technology in the HIV care setting.

Dr. Christopher Schriever is based at the UIC College of Pharmacy Rockford campus. His clinical practice specializes in patients living with HIV and Hepatitis C. Through interdisciplinary practice, he is involved in the care of approximately 450 patients. He is the Program Director for the new PGY1 Residency at our Rockford campus and is the elected chair of the Illinois Medicaid Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Committee for the Department of Health and Family Services.

In addition to patient care services, the Section maintains its commitment to educating future clinician-scientists. The Section has one of the largest and longest-standing ID Pharmacy fellowship training programs in the U.S. The Section also oversees one of the few PGY2 HIV/ID residency programs in North America. Drs. Smith and Burgos serve as directors of the PGY2 HIV residency and the PGY2 ID residency, respectively. To date, over 80 Infectious Diseases fellows and residents have completed these programs.

Beyond its academic mission, the Section remains active in clinical and basic science research. The Section is involved in Phase I through IV clinical trials of existing and investigational antimicrobial compounds. Section faculty contribute to the development of the profession through scholarly, teaching, research, and service activities in HIV pharmacotherapy and basic infectious diseases pharmacotherapy.

They have published more than 500 articles in major pharmacy and medical journals, contributed to many textbooks, and served on editorial boards and reviewers for numerous scientific medical and pharmacy journals.

Educational outreach has also led to the Section’s involvement in the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC). Through these activities, the Section provides educational information and

programming on ID and HIV pharmacotherapy to pharmacists in an eight-state area. Drs. Smith and Max have been integral in our relationship with MATEC. In addition, the Section has partnered with the Illinois Department of Public Health as a cosponsor of the Illinois Antimicrobial Stewardship Summit programs.

For the PharmD program, Drs. Badowski and Smith developed elective courses on case-based infectious diseases and management of HIV patients where Dr. Drwiega is co-coordinator. Dr. Drwiega is co-coordinator for the elective Concepts in Drug Development. Dr. Burgos coordinates and lectures in the infectious diseases therapeutics core course. Dr. Badowski assisted in developing electives on the exploration of telemedicine in pharmacy practice and clinical research design. The clinical research design elective received the 2022 Frederick P. Siegel Innovative Teaching Award. Dr. Max was instrumental in developing the Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in HIV Care elective course for students in advanced practice nursing, dentistry, medicine, nutrition, occupational therapy, pharmacy, and public health. Dr. Max serves as College of Pharmacy faculty facilitator for this program.

The future of the Section builds on its history as it continues to grow and serve as a state and national leader in current aspects of Infectious Diseases pharmacotherapy, including antimicrobial stewardship both locally and throughout the state of Illinois.

AND INCLUSION

In 2023, the Pharmacy Practice Department demonstrated a commitment to improve Diversity, Equity, Engagement, and Inclusion (DEEI) through presentations, research, and community events.

Dr. Daphne Smith Marsh was named Director of DEEI and leads the DEEI committee, comprised of co-chair Dr. Marlowe Djuric Kachlic, and Drs. Rodrigo Burgos, Christina Carrizales Cortez, Eden Keller, Charles McPherson, Faria Munir, Jewel Younge and Ms. Kimberly White. An update of the Advancing Racial Equity Strategic plan was provided to UIC. A highlight of the year was the March 2023 seminar “From Bias to Belonging: A Personal and Professional Responsibility” presented by Dr. Lakesha Butler, the Associate Vice President for Inclusion, Diversity and Health Equity for the University of Florida’s (UF) Health Science Center and Chief Diversity Officer for UF Health. Dr. Butler is one of our former pharmacy residents.

Tristesse Burton, PhD presented “Plants, People, and Culture: Women’s Health Research with BIPOC” in the Odehmenan Health Equity Center and “African Herbs and Food in Medicine” at the Austin Senior Satellite Center.

Dr. Faria Munir led research to study the impact of Student Pharmacist Driven Health Education in Adults Experiencing Homelessness. Dr. Munir and her students partnered with Hope’s Table, a service ministry, to present monthly health topics, such as naloxone use and HIV education.

A DEEI Residency Program Recruitment Checklist was created to expand outreach to diverse residency candidates.

Department of Pharmacy Practice faculty on the Rockford campus serve the needs of our students, residents, and patients at our clinical partners in Northern Illinois. The initial P1 class entered the doors of the Rockford campus in the fall of 2010; two pharmacy practice faculty along with other administration, staff, and faculty served as the inaugural team to expand the college in the State of Illinois. Since that time, Pharmacy Practice in Rockford has grown to fourteen clinical faculty members complementing the team of 36 individuals employed on the Rockford Campus. Faculty practice in a variety of clinical areas to meet the mission and vision of the department at our various partnering institutions. The college’s success depends on partnerships with OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center (OSF SAMC), University of Wisconsin (UWHealth) of Northern Illinois, MercyHealth, Crusader Community Health, KSB Hospital, and UI Health’s Mile Square Health Center – L.P. Johnson Rockford.

In 2023, the department welcomed Dr. Tony Rosella as Clinical Assistant Professor and Clinical Pharmacist at our UI Health Mile Square Clinic. Dr. Rosella is a graduate of UIC and the PGY1 residency in Rockford. His focus is on transitions of care for patients on the College of Medicine’s family medicine service, and he works closely with attending physicians, residents, and medical students to assure the safe and effective transition of his patients from inpatient to outpatient. He has clinical teaching responsibilities for M3 and M4 students on rotation and in the didactic curriculum for M1 and M2 students.

Rockford faculty began a new PGY2 residency program in Emergency Medicine (EM). Directed by Dr. Marianne Pop, this program enrolled its first resident at our clinical partner site, OSF SAMC, in 2022 – 23. This level one trauma center is an ideal location to train EM pharmacists. Assisted by clinical pharmacists at OSF and department faculty Dr. Manar Kandil, a productive ASHP accreditation site survey occurred in June 2023, we look forward to the ASHP Commission on Credentialing’s accreditation verdict following their Spring 2024 meeting. This program adds to UIC Rockford’s ASHP accredited PGY1 residency directed and coordinated by Drs. Annette Carmichael and Chris Schriever.

The College’s Rural Pharmacy Education (RPHARM) program continues to successfully graduate pharmacists prepared to practice in rural communities. Under the direction of department faculty Dr. Heidi Olson with the assistance of Drs. Allison Schriever and Jamie Hurd the program has graduated 61 pharmacists. These individuals practice in Illinois and 14 other states, 63% work in U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) designated health professions shortage areas. The RPHARM program sponsors many community outreach programs including working annually with Illinois Extension to provide blood pressure screenings at three area county fairs. Over the past six years Rockford faculty have worked over 600 hours, with the help of student pharmacists and residents, to screen blood pressures of nearly 3,000 individuals in Illinois, a valuable service to the citizens of our State.

UIC’s PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is a one-year program, during which the resident effectively makes the transition from student to independent practitioner. The main goals of the program are to develop competent clinical pharmacists capable of practicing in any setting by providing exposure to a diverse scope of pharmaceutical care services while fostering leaders in clinical pharmacy practice and education.

The 2022-2023 PGY1 pharmacy residency class had a 91% match rate into post-graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residencies with our other residents securing clinical positions within the Chicagoland area. Our Community Service Committee organized several events including a social media Halloween costume contest that raised over 100 books for elementary school students in a local underperforming school, Valentine’s Day cards for a local senior center to boost spirits and spread love, and a Mother’s Day clothing drive which collected two car-loads of clothing for a local women’s and children’s shelter. In the spring, we hosted residents from the University of Michigan for their professional development trip. End-of-the-year awards were given to PGY1 residents Dr. Rachel Sickley (Richard A. Hutchinson Award for Excellence in Pharmacy Practice) and Dr. Emily Hanners (John McBride Award for Excellence in Hospital Pharmacy), to preceptor Dr. Hailey Soni (Frank P. Paloucek Preceptor of the Year Award), and to Communications and Residency Coordinator Elizabeth Modrzyk (Residency Appreciation Award). Our residency programs reached an important milestone when we awarded the 1000th residency completion certificate this year. Our new 2023-2024 PGY1 class of 12 residents includes 2 from UIC, 2 from the University of California San Francisco, and 1 each from University of Colorado Denver, University of Pittsburgh, University of Mississippi, University of Maryland, University of Connecticut, University of Arizona, University of Buffalo, and University of Texas. PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build upon skills and competencies from PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. Academia & Family Medicine Pharmacy Fellowship UIC’s Academia and Family Medicine Pharmacy fellowship is a two-year training program in family medicine and the scholarship of teaching and learning, with a specific focus on substance use disorder. Completion of the program enables the fellow to become a full-time faculty member and leader within health professions education, training, and clinical practice.

The primary goals of the program are to develop fellows into independent researchers who can lead high-impact research endeavors in a variety of family medicine and teaching and learning environments, advance fellows into autonomous clinician-educators who possess in-depth therapeutic knowledge and research experience, and position fellows to be superior candidates for their desired career goals, especially academic roles.

Our 2022-2024 fellow, Alexander Infante, PharmD, BCPS focused on integrating scholarship and teaching into his role supporting opioid use disorder (OUD) clinical pharmacy services at UI Health and the Community Outreach Intervention Project’s Mobile Medical Unit. Dr. Infante sought to determine the impact of clinical services on medication-assisted recovery initiation and linkage to outpatient care and explore patient and provider perceptions of services, disseminating findings locally and nationally.

In addition to precepting numerous interprofessional learners, Dr. Infante presented OUD continuing education at the 2023 Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) Spring Meeting and developed lecture content and facilitated recitations for the UIC Patient Care Skills Labs. He presented six posters and a platform presentation at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Annual Meetings, for which he was awarded the 2023 ACCP Education and Training Practice and Research Network’s (EDTR PRN) Resident and Fellow Travel Award. Dr. Infante supported numerous publications that went on to receive awards like the UIC College of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice Publication of the Year Award. In his second year, Dr. Infante served on the ACCP EDTR PRN’s Professional Development Committee and the 2023 ACCP Task Force on Opioid Use Disorder.

Critical Care & Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Fellowship The Critical Care & Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy fellowship has the overarching aim to develop fellows who obtain advanced competencies in both clinical and translational research and clinical practice. The primary goals of the fellowship program are to develop fellows into autonomous pharmacy clinician-scientists, into clinical translational researchers who can lead high-impact research endeavors, and position fellows to be superior candidates for their desired career goals, especially clinical faculty roles in critical care and/or infectious disease. The fellowship is designed to provide broad exposure to research experiences in intensive care and infectious disease environments, as well as autonomous sub-specialty practice in both disciplines depending on the fellow’s interest. A significant focus is placed on individualizing the program and expectations to each fellow based on their ultimate career goals and to make them as well prepared as possible to be competitive for whichever career path they choose. Assessments follow a competency-based model promoting the fellow toward graduation after competency is determined in the desired areas.

In the academic year of 2022 - 2023, the fellowship graduated its second and third fellows: Mary Palmer Klawon (ID trained from Lutheran General Hospital) - current position: ID Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Rachel Belcher (Critically Care trained from Intermountain Healthcare) - current position: Critical Care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Yuma Regional Medical Center. Fellows Infectious Diseases Fellowship Our 2‐year Infectious Diseases fellowship is unique in that we have combined clinical and research into one program. During the first year, our post‐doctoral program includes 3‐6 months of clinical rotations focusing on infectious diseases in different settings and hospitals. During the second year, 2‐3 months of clinical infectious diseases rotations are also programmed. In addition, each post‐doc participates in an HIV clinic for a half‐ day per week during the two years. The remaining time (e.g., 14‐17 months) focuses on scholarly, teaching, and research training. In brief, our fellows participate in a wide range of research projects, including in vitro testing of new agents, pharmacokinetics‐pharmacodynamics of older and newer agents, surveys, retrospective analysis of antimicrobial therapy and clinical trials.

Our ID Fellows were very productive for the 2023 year. Six different research posters were presented in 2023, at the ID Week meeting in Boston, at the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America meeting (SHEA) in Seattle, Washington, and the Illinois Department of Public Health Annual Antimicrobial Stewardship Conference. Additionally, the fellows published 2 articles in 2023.

Infectious Diseases Pharmacology Fellowship The Infectious Diseases Pharmacology fellowship, directed by Dr. Zackery Bulman, addresses the critical challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance. This program is designed to develop the next generation of experts in the field, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to confront the pressing threat of resistant bacterial pathogens. Fellows engage in rigorous training that spans the entire spectrum of antimicrobial pharmacology, with a particular emphasis on the rational optimization of antibiotic regimens to overcome multidrug-resistant Gramnegative bacteria. The program integrates advanced training in antimicrobial pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/ PD), bacterial resistance, infectious diseases, translational pharmacology, and dynamic infection models to foster a holistic understanding of antibiotic action and infectious diseases. Participants in our fellowship benefit from a dynamic learning environment that combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on research opportunities, thereby preparing the fellows for a diverse array of career opportunities.

Our 2023-2025 Infectious Diseases Pharmacology fellow, Dr. Brooke Curry, has excelled in leading critical research projects in her first year. She spearheaded the development of a novel semi-automated antibiotic susceptibility testing approach and actively contributed to impactful manuscripts. She also performed a translational project that facilitated antibiotic selection for a patient battling an infection caused by highly resistant pathogens. As a result of this project, Brooke secured the 1st place Poster Award in the Clinical Research category at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Pharmacy Research Day. Dr. Curry's achievements exemplify the impactful work of our fellowship program and highlight their contributions to the fight against antibiotic resistance.

NEWS Dr. Zack Bulman Named UIC Rising Star Dr. Zackery Bulman was the recipient of the Rising Star Award, Clinical Sciences, as part of the UIC Researcher and Scholar of the Year Awards from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Dr. Abigail Elmes-Patel and the Jarrett Research Team Expand their Community Outreach Intervention Project The mobile units are ready to go! With funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Division, three more mobile units have been added to the Community Outreach Intervention Project (COIP) fleet to provide pharmacist-led substance use disorder care in areas of Chicago where access to care is scarce.

Dr. Paola Rosas Received Funding to Study Cardiac and Adipose Tissue Function in Females Dr. Paola Rosas received funding as a supplement linked to her Research Scientist Development K01 Award from National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a one-year project. The title of the project is “P21-activated kinase 1 is a novel regulator of cardiac and adipose tissue function in females.”

Dr. Martin Received Funding to Research Novel Smart Tag Technology Dr. Michelle Martin received new funding as PI from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for a 1.5 year project. The title of the project is “Effectiveness of a Novel Smart Tag Technology in a Pharmacy-Led Setting to Improve Adherence, Patient-Centered Care and Outcomes in HCV.”

Dr. Andrea Monteiro Visited Milan for the EuroQol Meeting Dr. Andrea Monteiro attended the EuroQol Academy 2023 meeting in Milan, Italy where she presented her work “Using the single profile preference method to estimate value sets for expanded descriptive systems” and was a discussant on a poster titled “Comparing (Heuristic) Valuation Processes between EQ-5D Valuation from Adult and Child Perspectives.”

UIC Transplant Clinical Pharmacy Team attends ATC

The Transplant Clinical Pharmacy Team represented the department well at the 2023 American Transplant Congress (ATC) meeting held in San Diego, CA with 11 poster presentations. ATC provides a forum for exchange of new scientific and clinical information relevant to solid organ and tissue transplant.

Drs. Jamie Benken and Benito Valdepeñas III along with their students from the PMPR 347 Advanced Transplant Therapeutics Class, won "Best Overall Project" from the American Society of Transplantation - Transplant Pharmacy Community of Practice. The award was announced at the American Transplant Congress.

Dr. Juliana Chan Awarded Faculty Mentor Award from the Chicago Schweitzer Fellows Program Dr. Juliana Chan was awarded the Faculty Mentor Award at the 2022-2023 Chicago Schweitzer Fellows Program at a ceremony held at DePaul University.

Dr. Chan mentored Niam Vora (a UIC COP P3 student) who developed the nation's first Transitions of Coordinated Care program for the released HCV prison patients from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Through UI Health, the case management/ social support program provided HCV treatment to recently incarcerated populations during their transition back into the community. The Program ensured patients having access to HCV medications, counseling, addictions resources and insurance in Illinois.

Each year the Schweitzer Fellows Program honors one faculty mentor and Dr. Chan was this year’s honoree to recognize her mentorship efforts in the program.

Dr. Karen Sweiss Received Funding to Study HEME-18 Post-Autologous Transplant Maintenance Dr. Karen Sweiss received new funding as principal investigator, with co-investigators Dr. Douglas Sborov from Huntsman (sub-site) and Dr. Emeka Uzoka from UIC, from Sanofi for a five-year project.

The title of the project is “HEME-18 Post-Autologous Transplant Maintenance with Isatuximab and Lenalidomide in Minimal Residual Disease Positive Multiple Myeloma.” This is a phase 2 study evaluating the efficacy of ixatuximab and lenalidomide in MRD positive myeloma patients post autologous transplant.

Dr. Karen Thomas Presented on Key Adherence Metrics at NASP Dr. Karen Thomas & Lauren Moy, P3 Specialty Pharmacy Extern, gave a CE presentation at the Annual National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP) meeting in Dallas, Texas. The presentation was titled “Key Adherence Metrics: Persistence & PDC.” Lauren also served as the president-elect for the NASP Student Association of Specialty Pharmacy (SASP) and presented a poster titled “Opportunities Provided to Students through a Specialty Pharmacy Externship Program”. Drs. Andy Donnelly and Tara Driscoll Attend FIP in Australia Drs. Andy Donnelly and Tara Driscoll attended and presented posters at the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) World Congress, held in Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Donnelly’s poster was titled “Development and implementation of a health system pharmacy administration and leadership rotation for fourth year student pharmacists.”

Dr. Daphne Smith Marsh Spoke on Advancing Health Equity at the Health Equity Summit Dr. Daphne Smith Marsh was a featured speaker in the first Health Equity Summit, held on the UIC Health Sciences Campus in Rockford.

Dr. Irene Ryu Served as NCODA Summit Committee Chair Dr. Irene Ryu attended the National Community Oncology Dispensing Association (NCODA) International Fall Summit 2023, held in Orlando, FL where she participated as Summit Committee Chair and presented a poster titled “Carboplatin: Case Study on Impact of Oncology Drug Shortages.”

International Program The UIC College of Pharmacy has been working with our international partners to advance clinical education and practice for over 4 decades. The emphasis is on the development and enhancement of clinically-focused degree programs and advancing the skills of clinical faculty and preceptors, practicing pharmacists as well as pharmacy administrators. All these activities align well with the mission and strategic initiatives of UIC, the College of Pharmacy as well as the Department of Pharmacy Practice.

In 1988, then Dean Henri Manasse arranged for 4 clinical faculty to teach at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). At the invitation of Professor Lanying Chen, PUMCH pharmacy director and a visionary leader, Drs. Alan Lau, Michael Maddux (now Executive Director, American College of Clinical Pharmacy), Susan Maddux (now Chief Pharmacy Officer, United Healthcare) and Keith Rodvold (now Distinguished Professor Emeritus, UIC), each spent about 2 weeks at PUMCH taught in classroom and at bedside to pharmacists from provinces throughout China.

In early 1990s, Dean Schumock also visited Beijing Medical University Hospital.

Instead, our faculty delivered presentations virtually as our collaborative teaching with Malta and Hong Kong continues. Conducting education programs online allows participation of larger number of UIC faculty speakers, both from Chicago and Rockford. As an example, over 30 clinical faculty taught in the Advanced internal medicine program for Hong Kong.

For the annual Sino-American Clinical Pharmacy Conference, UIC faculty have been delivering presentations each year since its inception in 2013. During the pandemic, instead of travelling to China, presentations were delivered online where there were more than 10,000 participants each time. In 2023, Drs. Mark Dunnenberger, James Lee and Alan Lau delivered online presentations for the Conference. Also, during the pandemic, our faculty conducted teaching online for the Meiji Pharmaceutical University. Dr. Jennifer Pham taught in 2023.

International summer program ‘Contemporary clinical pharmacy education and practice’ After a hiatus of 3 years, we resumed offering the 4-week international summer program ‘Contemporary Clinical Pharmacy Education and Practice’ in June-July, 2023. Seventy pharmacy students, residents, pharmacists and faculty from our international partners participated in the Program.

In November, Drs. Renee Petzel Gimbar, Keri Kim and Alan Lau delivered presentations at Conferences in Singapore and Hanoi, Vietnam. At the Hanoi University of Pharmacy, together with Dr. Jeremy Johnson and Brian Murphy, they have conducted a workshop on ‘Clinical pharmacy practice teaching methods’ and delivered a presentation to students on ‘Pharmacy education in USA’.

These activities encapsulate well how we collaborate with our partners to advance clinical practice and education.

Our Team Led a Successful Campus Flu Clinic Dr. Monazzah Sarwar led a successful West Campus Flu Clinic. The team administered 293 vaccines to UIC students. Our pharmacy student volunteers and Jennifer Takamura (PGY1 Community Resident), Daniel Beckman (SCB Pharmacist), Julianna Estremera (P4), Mohammad Mohammad (P4) assisted with the West Campus Flu Clinic and its success.

Ambulatory Care Management of Cardiovascular Diseases Presentations Given to Pharmacists in Hong Kong and Macau Several faculty participated in a virtual program on ‘Ambulatory Care Management of Cardiovascular Diseases’ delivered to pharmacists in Hong Kong and Macau. Faculty Attended the ASHP Leadership Conference Several faculty and our Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) resident attended the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Leaders Conference held in Chicago, IL. Those in attendance were Vinh Thai, Adam Bursua, Matt Gimbar, John Garofalo, Kit Moy, Kathy Mosio, Steve Gutekanst, Jen Halsey, Christina Cortez, Monazzah Sarwar, Karen Thomas, Andy Donnelly, and Jamie Paek.

Advancing Community Health: Dr. Brianna Hudak and Colleagues Present Model for Integrating Methadone Program at ASAM Dr. Brianna Hudak, along with Drs. Nicole Gastala, Christine Neeb, Marisa Bruni, Jessica Richardson, and Linda Lesondak, and Samantha Madrid, gave a presentation titled “Integrating a Community Methadone Program within a Federally Qualified Health Center” at the American Society of Addiction Medicine held in Washington, DC.

Dr. Vinh Thai Appointed as a Member to ASHP's PALRC Dr. Vinh Thai was appointed to serve as a member on American Society of Health-System Pharmacy's (ASHP) Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residents' Collaborative (PALRC) HSPAL Resident Resources Workgroup for the 2023-2024 term.

Our Department Expanded into New Space The Department has grown in size, and with that growth it meant moving into new space. In 2023, our Department expanded into the Benjamin Goldberg Research Building to better assist our staff and faculty to support the clinical and training needs.

Faculty Visit Vietnam and Singapore for Network and Outreach Several faculty travelled to Vietnam and Singapore to give presentations and visit area hospitals to network with colleagues. Drs. Keri Kim, Renee Petzel Gimbar and Nancy Shapiro gave presentations at the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore’s Hospital Chapter; Drs. Kim, Petzel Gimbar, Alan Lau and Jeremy Johnson also attended and each gave presentations at the Asian Federation of Pharmaceutical Sciences held in Hanoi, Vietnam. Drs. Kim, Petzel Gimbar, Lau and Shapiro gave presentations at the Hanoi University of Pharmacy. In addition, our faculty team held meetings at the Singapore General Hospital, the National University of Singapore, 108 Military Central Hospital and St. Paul Hospital in Hanoi.

Dr. Jeremy Johnson delivered a presentation detailing his work on the anti-cancer activity of phytochemicals from the mangosteen at the annual meeting for the Asian Federation of Pharmaceutical Scientists in Hanoi Vietnam.

Dr. Keri Kim shared five distinctive teaching methods she uses in her practice setting. She shared examples of how each of the teaching methods can be instituted to build problem solving skills. She emphasized the importance of teaching problem solving skills for trainees with different skill sets and setting up an environment ideal for learning.

Dr. Renee Petzel Gimbar presented different ways to incorporate learners into ED specific activities and patients of varying acuities. She discussed expectations based on open dialog and experience of learners, as well as using a multi-trainee model when teaching.

Drs. Kim and Petzel Gimbar found their international experience was enriched by touring hospitals and talking to clinical pharmacists at the hospitals and to faculty at the Hanoi University of Pharmacy. This was a great opportunity to inquire about and observe pharmacy practice in Vietnam and to understand the structure of patient centered projects.

Dr. Kirsten Ohler Presented on Celebrating 55 Years of Training Excellence at COP Alumni Reunion Dr. Kirsten Ohler was a presenter at the COP Alumni Reunion. The title of her presentation was “UIC Residency Programs – Celebrating 55 Years of Training Excellence.”

Breaking Down Barriers: Practice Faculty Publish Findings on Prior Authorizations in Transplantation Drs. Cassie Muran, Nehrin Khamo, Ruchik Patel and Nida Fayyaz, with colleagues, published an article in Clinical Transplantation on evaluation of prior authorizations in transplant recipients at an urban institution.

Dr. Emily Hanners was the recipient of the John McBride Award for Excellence in Hospital Pharmacy.

Dr. Rachel Sickley was the recipient of the Richard A. Hutchinson Award for Excellence in Pharmacy Practice.

Dr. Hailey Soni was the recipient of the Pharmacy Practice Frank P. Paloucek Preceptor of the Year Award.

Elizabeth Modrzyk was the recipient of the Resident Appreciation Award.

Pharmacy Practice Well Represented at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting Our faculty had a strong presence at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting & Exhibition 2023 held in Anaheim, CA. Midyear hosts more than 20,000 pharmacy professionals and students from all over the globe for presentations and poster sessions, as well as recruitment opportunities for our trainees and programs.

End of Year Celebration

We closed the year with a Holiday Celebration to recognize the hard work and contributions of our faculty, staff and trainees.

The Department held a wreath contest at our Holiday Party, each service team was offered a wreath to decorate. The wreaths were voted on by all in attendance by blind vote.
