SHEP began in 2003 as a service learning partnership between JABSOM and the State of Hawaii Department of Education. The overall goals of SHEP are to inspire State of Hawaii Department of Education students to pursue higher education -- especially to pursue careers in science and the health professions. Medical students organize and plan innovative, interactive, and informative health education programs for high school and middle school students. During the 2016 – 2017 academic year, the medical students of SHEP were fortunate to interact with over 700 State of Hawaii Department of Education students. These included students from the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island of Hawaii.
