Peyton Moseley’s Senior Recital Assisted by Jeremy Larson From the studio of Hector Vasquez

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) George Frideric Handel was born on February 23rd, 1685 in Halle, Brandenburg which is now Germany. Although Handel was born in Germany, he was an English composer who wrote many operas and oratorios as well as compositions for instruments.

Berenice is an opera written by Handel features Si, tra I ceppi in Act II. This part is sung by Demetrio, the man that Queen Berenice of Egypt is in interested in. The Queen orders Demetrio to be held captive and tortured because he does not have mutual feelings, and instead is in love with her sister, Selene.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

In der Fremde is part of Liederkreis, a song cycle by Schumann. It is the first song in the song cycle and is in A-B-A form and through-composed. The piano part is arpeggiated and uses 16th notes. The song is mostly played in the piano dynamic as it sets the scene of a departing storm. Schumann uses the piano to paint the picture of this scene while the vocalist expresses loneliness and helplessness. The character has lost his parents and is singing about the death of his parents and how nobody will know him any longer. He sings of the joys of death that he can’t wait to receive even though he will remain forgotten forever. The poem was originally written by Joseph von Eichendorff.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) Richard Strauss was born on June 11th, 1864 in Germany and died at the age of 85 on September 8th, 1949. He was a well-known German composer who began composing at the age of 6 and composed several genres including tone poems and operas. He also became successful conductor while his compositions became staples in orchestras and operas in Europe and the Americas.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Felix Mendelssohn was born on February 3rd, 1809 in Germany and died on November 4th, 1847 at the age of 38. Mendelssohn was a very successful musician and composer, known for his piano and organ skills. He was an early romantic composer and composed many genres such as symphonies, keyboard music, organ repertoire, concertos, and chamber music. Today he is one of the most well-known and staple composers in the world.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) Henry Purcell was an English composer born on September 10th, 1695 and died on November 21st, 1695 at the age of 36. He is known as one of the most famous and successful English composers, starting at only nine years old. He was mostly known for composing court music like symphonies, but Purcell also loved composing for theatre settings and composed The Indian Queen which is considered to be a semi-opera.

Roger Quilter (1877-1953)

Roger Quilter was born on November 1st, 1877 in Brighton, England. Quilter is praised for his composition writing as it is well written for singers and the accompaniments are well supported with rhythmical variety. Because of both of these writing techniques, it allows the performers to connect deeper between the meaning of the text and the music that is performed along with it.

Frederick Keel (1871-1954) Frederick Keel was born on May 8th, 1871 in England and died on August 9th, 1954. Keel was known as a recitalist and was a huge influence on music in Germany during World War I. He wrote Salt-Water Ballads by poet John Masefield. Although he has composed other songs, Trade Winds gave him the most recognition and popularity.

Stefano Donaudy (1879-1925) Stefano Donaudy was born on February 21st, 1879 in Palermo, Sicily. Although there is not a lot of information about his personal life, it is known that he was a very successful composer covering several genres including art songs, operas, chamber music, and orchestral pieces.

Vincenzo Righini (1756-1812) Vincenzo Righini was born on January 22nd, 1756 in Italy and died on August 19th, 1812. Righini started his career as a singer as a tenor in Rome and Florence. Later he began to compose and his composition La vedova scaltra, an opera buffa, was performed in Prague theater. This was his gateway into composing for theatre settings.

Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) Vincenzo Bellini was born on November 3rd, 1801 in Italy and died on September 23rd, 1835. Much of the information known today on Bellini is from letters that he wrote to his friend Francesco Florimo. Bellini is a staple composer in the bel canto style of music, which means beautiful singing. His main composition genre was opera, where he excelled in and are now still performed over 200 years later.
