Andrew has appeared as soloist with many of the top orchestras throughout the United States and in Europe, including the Baltimore Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Houston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, the George Enescu Philharmonic in Romania, and many others. He has collaborated with distinguished conductors Osmo Vänskä, Cristian Macelaru, Jahja Ling, Gerard Schwarz, Andrew Litton, Lucas Richman, Josep-Caballe Domenech, and Philip Mann. An avid chamber musician, Andrew has jammed with legendary vocalist Bobby McFerrin, played tangos with the Assad Brothers, and has collaborated with numerous other distinguished instrumentalists and singers. He recently recorded his debut CD with violinist Hasse Borup for the Naxos label in Copenhagen which released in 2020. Andrew has a keen interest in performing new music and has collaborated with composers Howard Shore, Augusta Read Thomas, Yehudi Wyner, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Pierre Jalbert, Richard Lavenda, and Christopher Walczak among others. Other notable performances include concerts at Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall in New York, and the Kennedy Center and Library of Congress in Washington DC. He has been heard twice on American Public Media’s “Performance Today,” and on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” in 2004.

Andrew is an Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Houston and formerly taught at the University of Utah. He is Artistic Director of the Young Artist World Piano Festival in Minnesota and gives frequent master classes and lectures around the United States. A native of Saint Paul, Minnesota, he earned his Doctorate at Rice University with Jon Kimura Parker and also studied at the University of Minnesota with Lydia Artymiw.

Other significant awards and honors include The Provost’s Certificate of Distinction in Teaching from the University of Oklahoma (2018). While at OU, he was chosen as a soloist for their annual Concerto-Gala Concert, where he performed Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto: Finale: Alla breve. Other performance highlights include Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall and the Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt, Austria. Recent pedagogy students’ achievements include an essay chosen as runner-up in Piano Magazine’s collegiate essay contest and the publication of original pedagogical repertoire in Russia. While serving as faculty advisor, the MTNA Collegiate Chapter at UH was awarded the first TMTEF Collegiate Chapter of the Year Award at the 2019 TMTA Convention. His graduates have successfully completed MTNA Professional Certification and have presented at TMTA and the National Conference of Keyboard Pedagogy.

During his downtime, Van Kekerix enjoys downhill skiing, traveling, and exploring new gastronomic delights and cookbooks.

Eddie Green Commission Series

Today’s concert features the premieres of five new works for concert band as part of the Eddie Green Commission Series. Named in honor of the Director Emeritus of Wind Ensembles Eddie Green, the project has created five new pieces for varied grade levels and by diverse composers. The series is intended to continue growing the repertoire for concert band at all levels with music that can be played in band halls around the world.

The commissions have been led by composer Leroy Osmon and Director of Bands David Bertman and funded by the Eddie Green/Chad Collins Family Endowment.

For more information regarding the works including performance materials, please reach out to the University of Houston Band Department through Cameron Kubos at ckkubos@uh.edu or directly through the composers themselves.
