Under the direction of Rob Smith, AURA is an innovative and professional-caliber ensemble is dedicated to the performance of chamber music composed in the last two decades. In addition to serving as a training ground for performers interested in careers performing contemporary music, the ensemble frequently collaborates with dancers and creative writers, and presents students, faculty, and the community with programs that represent the latest classical music trends and styles.

Resonances

In tonight’s program, Resonances, AURA performs works that reflect on earlier music, events, and viewpoints. Compositions by Gabriella Smith and AURA director Rob Smith are inspired by and reference the music of Baroque composers J.S. Bach and G.H. Stölzel, respectively, and view their musical ideas through a modern lens. Gabriella’s work was commissioned by the 2012 Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival as a companion piece for Bach’s fifth Brandenberg Concerto, while Rob’s work was commissioned by Jan van Lohuizen to honor and celebrate the life of his mother, Angenieta van Lohuizen-Meijer, who passed away in 2013. Melodic material from Stölzel’s aria “Bist de bei mir” is used to construct “Angenieta”, as it was one of Angenieta’s favorite pieces of music.

Guest musicians Poppy Beddoe (clarinet) and Andrea Benabent (piano) will present the premiere of Houston composer Chad Robinson’s “Rhapsody Noir”, a dark reflection of Claude Debussy’s 1910 works for piano and clarinet “Première Rhapsodie” and “Petite Pièce”. “Quartet”, by New Zealand composer Natalie Hunt, recalls the composer’s experience living in Canterbury, NZ in the weeks following the November 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes. This was a highly uncertain time, as residents were left wondering if more aftershocks or “The Big One” were soon to follow.

GUEST ARTISTS Poppy Beddoe, clarinet Clarinetist Poppy Beddoe performs extensively throughout the United Kingdom and internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. In 2021 Poppy released her debut recording, Soliloquy, featuring works by Malcolm Arnold, Matthew Taylor, Olivier Messiaen, Luciano Berio, and her arrangements of the music of Hildegard Von Bingen and J.S. Bach. Her next recording will be of a concerto written for her by Matthew Taylor with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Poppy hold degrees from King's College London and the Royal Academy of Music. Currently, she is the Artistic Director of the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival and a musicianship teacher at the Junior Royal Academy of Music.

Andrea Benabent, piano Spanish pianist Andrea Benabent has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions. After her debut at the National Auditorium of Madrid she has performed in numerous countries, including France, UK, USA, Spain, and Italy. She received her undergraduate degree from the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, Spain and her master’s degree, with Professor Dr. Josu de Solaun, at Sam Houston State University, where she was a member of the faculty from 2018-2019. Currently she is serving as a Da Camera of Houston Young Artist and is pursuing a DMA in piano performance at the University of Houston.

Samantha Taylor, mezzo-soprano Samantha Taylor, is currently pursuing her Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, studying with Professor Melanie Sonnenberg. In the Fall 2022 season, Ms. Taylor is featured with Moores Opera Center as Belle in Phillip Glass’s La Belle et la Bête and as guest soloist with AURA Contemporary Ensemble in For the Time Being by Michel van der Aa and Bist du bei mir by G.H. Stölzel. In the 20212022 MOC season, Ms. Taylor performed Sesto in Giulio Cesare and Petra in A Little Night Music. She also performed with the 2021 Chicago Summer Opera as Claudio in Silla. Described by the South Florida Classical Review as singing “with elegance and a rich timbre” Ms. Taylor received her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Miami in 2021, where she performed roles like Sally in A Hand of Bridge.

Composer Rob Smith is Professor of Music Composition and director of the AURA Contemporary Ensemble at the University of Houston. He has received numerous awards, including a Fulbright Grant to Australia and an Aaron Copland House Residency, and his highly energetic music is frequently performed throughout the United States and abroad. Commissions have come from the Texas Music Festival Orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program, and the American Composers Forum, among others. Boosey & Hawkes, Carl Fischer, C-Alan Publications, and Skitter Music Publications publish his music.

Shupeng Wang, assistant director and piano Pianist Shupeng Wang has come to music from a diverse background. Before moving into the professional study of music, Mr. Wang started his career in the field of biology. During college, Mr. Wang devoted himself to music by joining piano clubs, where he expanded his repertoire and began performing regularly. Mr. Wang has participated in numerous competitions and was the prize-winner of Medici International Music Competition (2021) and Great Composer Competition (Prokofiev, 2019). Mr. Wang holds a bachelor’s degree in Science from National Taiwan University in Taiwan and a master’s degree in piano performance from Boston University. He is currently in the Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance program under the guidance of Dr. Tali Morgulis at University of Houston Moores School of Music.

Wen-Hsiu Angela Lai, flute Wen-Hsiu Angela Lai hails from Taiwan and enjoys a musical career that spans across Asia, Australia, and United States. Ms. Lai holds her BA and MM degrees from Taiwan National Sun-Yat Sen University and is now pursuing her DMA at the University of Houston Moores School of Music with a full scholarship in 2020. Her main teachers include Hsiao-Pei Iris Ma at Taiwan National Sun-Yat Sen University, Vernon Hell at Queensland Conservatorium, and Aralee Dorough at the University of Houston. Ms. Lai has received numerous awards in competitions, which includes receiving first prize in the Taiwan National Student Artist Competition and being named a finalist of the Taiwan Flute Competition. This year, she advanced as one of 15 quarterfinalists in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition in Chicago.

Adam Boswell, clarinet Adam Boswell is a clarinetist based in Houston, Texas and is pursuing an artist diploma at the Moores School of Music under the guidance of Randall Griffin. Following the completion of his bachelor's degree in 2021, Adam became a full-time private lesson teacher teaching in areas such as Pasadena, Katy, and Missouri City. During his time at the Moores School of Music, Adam has served as principal of both the Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. Adam has also participated in the Fresno Summer Orchestral Academy (2019) as well as the Texas Music Festival (2022).

Luis Osorio Betancourt, violin Luis Osorio Betancourt began violin studies with maestro Tania Montañez in Cartagena, Colombia at the Comfenalco School of Music, followed by professional studies with Dr. Ana Maria Trujillo at the University of Antioquia. In 2017 he was selected to perform as a soloist in the McCutcheon Honors Recital in Columbia. Osorio received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern State University in Louisiana, where he studied with Dr. Andrej Kurti, and after graduating served as a public-school orchestra director in Austin. Osorio has been a member of the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Longview Symphony Orchestra, Marshall Symphony Orchestra, Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra, and the South Arkansas Symphony Orchestra among others. Currently, he is pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Houston under the guidance of Dr. Kirsten Yon.

Ming-Wei Hsieh, violin Violinist and Taiwan native Ming-Wei Hsieh frequently performs in the Houston area and has regularly led the Moores School Symphony and Opera Orchestras as a concertmaster and sectional principal. In Taiwan, he has performed with the Taiwanese Artists Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan Soloists Symphony Orchestra, and the Apex String Ensemble. In 2020 and 2021 he was invited to perform at the Kaohsiung Spring Art Festival in their Counterpoint Ensemble concerts, and in 2017 he was featured as a soloist in the Bruch Violin Concerto with the National University of Tainan Symphony Orchestra. Hsieh holds his Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from the National University of Tainan in Taiwan, Master of Music degree from the University of Houston Moores School of Music. Currently he is pursuing working a Performance Certificate at the University of Houston Moores School of Music with Dr. Kirsten Yon.

Yuxuan Zhang, viola Yuxuan Zhang comes from Beijing, China, and she is pursuing Master of Music in University of Houston studying with Wayne Brooks. Zhang began her studies of viola at the age of 13 in Pre-College of China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and she received her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University, as well as a performance diploma at Indiana University’s Jacob school of music. Her previous mentors have included Shaowu Wang, Fei Cao, Yu Jin and Atar Arad. Zhang is an alumna of National Repertoire Orchestra and Aspen Music Festival, and she has been a violist of Canton Symphony Orchestra and Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.

Oshagan Merjanian, cello Oshagan Merjanian, a native of San Jose, California, learned piano and cello growing up. The summer after his first year of high school he sustained a traumatic brain injury which put him in a coma for three days and caused him to lose all his motor skills. With hard work the support of many, he recovered and went on to perform Saint Sean’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Winchester Orchestra seven months later. Merjanian holds B.M. and M.M. Cello Performance degrees from Cal State University Northridge (CSUN) – where he performed with the Samuel Goldberg Honors String Quartet and was awarded the CSUN Arts Council Scholarship for Extraordinary Achievement in Music – and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he was a member of the Gluck Cello Quartet and received the coveted Mangasar M. Mangasarian Scholarship. Oshagan is currently pursuing his Performance Certificate at the Moores School of Music.

Sharon Montes, double bass Double bassist and Houston native Sharon Montes received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas at Arlington. During her time in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Sharon worked as a Fine Arts Clinician and private instructor for Ben Barber Innovative Academy in Mansfield, TX. In 2019, Sharon attended the International Summer String Institute at the University of North Texas where she won the audience prize for the festival’s concerto competition performing the Koussevitzky double bass concerto. Sharon was also accepted into the 2020 PRISMA summer festival in Canada and attended the 2021 Monteux Music Festival in Maine. Currently Montes is pursuing a master’s degree in double bass performance and pedagogy at the Moores School of Music. In her spare time Sharon enjoys cooking and playing frisbee.

Born into a musical family, New Zealand composer Natalie Hunt spent much of her childhood attending theatre, dance, and music rehearsals. In 2009 she was named New Zealand Symphony Orchestra National Youth Orchestra Composer in Residence, and winner of the NZSO/Todd Corporation Young Composer Award for her work Rain II. She has been commissioned by the Institute of Registered Music Teachers in Wellington, NZ, the New Zealand String Quartet and the 2017 Adam Chamber Music Festival. Natalie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & International Relations from Victoria University, as well as a Bachelor of Music with first class Honors in Instrumental/Vocal Composition from the New Zealand School of Music.

Chad Robinson

Houston native, Chad Robinson, is the Artistic Director and founder of Texas New Music Ensemble, a Houston-based, mixed chamber ensemble focused solely on the work of Texas composers. As a composer, he has worked with many prestigious ensembles and soloists, such as: Ethel, Lontano, The Jack Quartet, The Parker Quartet, Musiqa, George Vosburgh, Mary Dullea, and Emma Steele. His music has been performed throughout the globe and in February of 2020, his works received their Carnegie Hall debut. Dr. Robinson has received multiple awards and grants throughout his career, including: 1st Prize in the CMU Orchestral Composition Competition, 2nd Prize in the Louisa Stude Sarofim Composition Competition, KCL Music Research Grant, and the KCL Arts and Humanities Research Grant.

An alumnus of University of Houston (BM), Carnegie Mellon University (MM) and King's College, London (Ph.D.), Dr. Robinson currently serves on the faculty of Texas A&M University – Kingsville and his music is recorded by Navona Records.

Gabriella Smith

Gabriella Smith is a composer and environmentalist based in Seattle.

Whether for orchestras, chamber ensembles, voices, or electronics, Gabriella’s music comes from a love of play, exploring new sounds on instruments, building compelling musical arcs, and connecting listeners with the natural world. Recent highlights include the LA Phil’s performances of Tumblebird Contrails, conducted by John Adams; and the Aizuri Quartet’s recording of Carrot Revolution on their Grammy-nominated debut album Blueprinting.

She recently released her first full-length album, Lost Coast, with cellist Gabriel Cabezas, named one of NPR Music’s “26 Favorite Albums Of 2021 (So Far)” and a “Classical Album to Hear Right Now” by The New York Times. Gabriella has held residencies with the Nashville Symphony; Instituto Sacatar on the island of Itaparica in Bahia, Brazil; and a Copland House Residency at Aaron Copland’s home in upstate New York. She has received grants and awards from BMI, ASCAP, New Music USA, the Barlow Endowment, American Modern Ensemble, and the Theodore Presser Foundation, among others. She received her bachelor’s degree in composition from the Curtis Institute of Music and attended Princeton University for graduate school. When not composing, she can be found hiking, backpacking (playing trail songs on her ukulele along the way), birding, playing capoeira, recording underwater soundscapes with her hydrophone, and identifying bird songs and calls as part of a project with Soundscapes to Landscapes monitoring ecosystem health and biodiversity through sound.

Michel Van Der Aa

Michel van der Aa is one of the most important Dutch composers of his generation and has attracted significant attention for his imaginative and expressive music theatre works. After training as a music recording engineer at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he studied composition with Diderik Wagenaar, Gilius van Bergeijk, and Louis Andriessen. After graduating, he turned from the constructivism of the ‘Hague school’ to a more personal, more poetic and transparent style. His music has been programmed at numerous international festivals for contemporary music, and has been performed by artists such as the Asko Ensemble, Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Netherlands Opera among many others. He has received many awards, including the Gaudeamus Prize (1999), Vermeulen Prize (2004), Hindemith Prize (2006), Kagel Prize (2013), Grawemeyer Award (2013) and the Johannes Vermeer Award (2015). He has served as the house composer of the Concertgebouw Orchestra since 2011 and recordings of his music may be found on the Col Legno, Harmonia Mundi, Composer’s Voice, BVHaast, X-OR, and VPRO Eigenwijs labels.

In the 20-21 season, AURA moved online to perform for a global audience through their innovative video series One on One. Through elaborate and highly creative videos, AURA musicians performed exciting new solo works and interviewed the composers that created them.
