The Wellcome Collection

We have partnered with the Wellcome Collection to host this beautiful collection of work by Georgie Meadows.

A retired occupational therapist - Meadows, 'Stitched Drawings' brings together 24 textile portraits.

The artworks were created using a domestic sewing machine to sew through two pieces of cloth, separated by wadding. The delicacy of the pieces alongside the tangled threads are both a metaphor for the scrambling of neural connections during degenerative illness and a tender and tactile form of portraiture.

Meadows uses this art form to tell the everyday stories that often go unnoticed; a woman finds people assume her to be grumpy since losing her teeth; the success of a man’s day is measured by his dressing himself; a woman is hungry but her brain will no longer tell her how to eat.

The work is incredibly thought provoking. Some portraits are accompanied by stories, others are there for you to create your own.

We really want our art collection at the hospital to not only showcase amazing talent but to also present opportunities for conversation around health, and physical and mental wellbeing.

Art Kits

Our trusty art kits continue to be extremely popular with departments across the Trust. We have given out so many!

Our dedicated volunteers have been very busy packing and delivering kits to all areas, with a particular need being from therapies, the enhanced care team and all long stay patients.

DISCOVE

We have had so much interest from other NHS Hospitals about this project and even been contacted by a hospital in the states!

We are just planning our 5th kit!

“Such a special moment, I feel so happy, thank you”

“what a magical performance, my mum has had a tough few days and to listen to live music have brought tears to her eyes. Ben was truly lovely to her and together they sang. It really cheered her up”

RTSATUHC 2024/25

As we plan for our year ahead, we hope to cont nue to del ver an exciting exhibition and engagement programme for our hospitals.

We are now actively applying for funding to continue and increase our current artists and musicians in residence. Having used the past 12 months to carefully evaluate work and plan our ideal way forward. We are also working more closely with specific wards and patient groups to enrich our arts delivery, with staff so supportive of its continuation and growth.

Over the next year we want to ensure we have a basic budget to continue our current work whilst also explore new and exciting projects and partnerships to keep 'expanding' our arts delivery here at UHCW.

Coming Soon..

Here are just a few things we hope to bring to UHCW very soon

1 Arts Outside

Exploring opportunities for creativity in our green space

2 The Wellcome Collection at UHCW

We are very excited to be developing a new partnership with the Wellcome Collection, a loaned exhibition of stitched portraits exploring the journey of aging and how it impacts our physical and mental health.

3 Creative Writing and Poetry

Whilst we hope to continue to grow our residencies even further we are keen to explore written word and poetry. A theme suggested by our patients.

4 I More 'Table Top' Activities for All Offering drop in events for patients, visitors and our staff in areas such as Union House (Coffee Shop), and the Faith Centre.

5 I Staff Arts Club

Something we would like to establish this coming year, so that staff can get the very most out of our arts programme too.
