2022, UHCL Libraries An equal opportunity/affirmative action university

Message from the Leadership Team As we look ahead to this next year, we begin with what we learned and accomplished during the 2021-2022 academic year. In May 2021, the library began a major renovation of the main floor, with a creative spatial strategy of providing an engaging and stimulating learning experience through innovation-oriented spaces and technology. In February 2022, we celebrated the reopening of our main floor with our "Love Your Library" event. We are looking forward to providing more learner-centered and collaborative spaces, new technology, and an updated Archives and Special Collections area. Our utmost desire is to make a positive impact on the success of UHCL students from all disciplines. Archives & Special Collections: This year, we embarked on reviewing and managing our holdings under a new collection policy, which will help us acquire and make available high-quality archival collections to support university and public research needs. We plan on expanding our online resources and will partner with UHCL instructors to facilitate education experiences with primary sources. We continue to seek funding opportunities and grants which will help make the Archives’ holdings more readily available and discoverable by our researchers. Assessment: Throughout the year, we have visualized additional data points for the library community, and all are welcome to explore the library's dashboard for interesting usage, space, and engagement statistics. We will continue to seek your invaluable input through surveys and focus groups as we look towards making improvements in our services and spaces. Access & Delivery Services: The Access & Delivery Services Team operated from the library’s upper floor for the first half of the school year and returned to its original location, with a new Access Services desk, upon completion of the main floor renovation. Throughout the year, we continued to provide users with access to library collections, materials from other libraries, technology, and spaces. We will continue to seek new ways to improve student access to library resources and spaces. Research & Instruction Services: At the beginning of the fall semester, the service-oriented Research and Instruction Team returned to campus to meet the research needs of students onsite, in addition to maintaining their virtual presence prior to the Feb 14 soft opening of the library’s main floor. We are proud to have answered hundreds of text enquiries and emails and completed over 600 chat transactions. The team also worked diligently with the faculty to offer library instruction sessions through a mix of delivery models including asynchronous/synchronous virtual, face-to-face, and hybrid classes. Next year we plan to welcome students, faculty, and staff back with a grand reopening which will feature an active learning classroom, XR lab, new consultation service desk, and brand-new private research consultation space. Scholarly Communications: This year we continued to work with faculty and campus organizations to develop partnerships to better assist faculty through faculty-focused events on scholarly communication topics and research and instruction services. Next year we hope to expand our institutional repository of faculty works. See our Scholarly Communications Guide. Technology & Resource Management: Throughout the year, we have improved OneSearch in several areas. We will continue to select and maintain a wide range of scholarly materials which are consistent with the university's mission and curricula/research needs.

THE STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS In March of 2022, the Library enlisted Dr. Megan Topham, Executive Director for the UHCL Institute for Human and Planetary Sustainability (IHAPS) for guidance in leading the library through the strategic planning process. A planning work group was formed to coordinate efforts within the library. The team consisted of: Dr. Vivienne McClendon (Executive Director), Kate Carter, Donna Elrod, Juliana Espinosa, Linsey Ford, Jennifer Holland, Martha Hood, Neeta Jambhekar, David Palmer, Matthew Peek, Chat Steed, Jingshan Xiao, and Chloris Yue. The planning team met at least once a month from March until August. From the beginning, the planning team focused on gathering and incorporating library staff input into the final plan. To this end, we held a half-day retreat in May and the process continued at our Annual Planning Session held in August. The implementation and finalization of of objectives has been delayed due to being shortstaffed. The library hopes once we have additional staff hired, to refresh and evaluate the plan for next year including looking at initiatives and measures.

ARCHIVES & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS HAPPENINGS By Matthew Peek Founded in 1989, the University of Houston-Clear Lake Archives and Special Collections’ mission is collect, preserve, and make publicly accessible original historical archival materials for use by its constituents for research and preservation of community history. It serves as the official repository for University of Houston-Clear Lake non-current records The Archives and Special Collection has the following collecting areas and collections in its holdings: University Archives, Human Space Flight Collection, Clear Lake Area Collection, and the Johnson Space Center (JSC) History Collection. These materials are open for research to UHCL students, alumni, faculty, staff and the general public. The UHCL Archives has developed a new collection policy to implement more responsible management of its holdings, and to bring a more specific focus on the types of materials it will collect. We have also reoriented some of our storage and working space to provide staff and users with a more streamlined experience that better serves their needs. With our staff returned to full-time office work from the pandemic, the Archives also began hosting more class, donor, and public tours of the archives, with plans to increase tours of the facility in coming years.

NASA Alumni League Space Collections Internship The NASA Alumni League, JSC Chapter, Space Collections Internship continued for its second year, hosting UHCL history master’s student Jacob Welch. Welch arranged and described the Space News Roundup Collection (HSF-1), Lisa (Leonard) Moore Papers (HSF-54), and Allan DuPont Papers (HSF-55) in our Human Space Flight Collection. Welch also helped reorganize and manage duplicates within our Space History Reference Book Collection stored in the Archives’ reading room, which provided the Archives with additional space for other collection materials. Michael Guillen and Alexander Rodriguez also interned during 2021-2022.

2021-202 NAL Intern Jacob Welch

Archives Tour Video

New Archives Access Materials To help spread awareness and provide an introduction to the Archives, the UHCL Archives and Special Collections produced a short tour video of its facility, featuring a history of the program. The video highlights the means by which the Archives became the custodian of the NASA Johnson Space Center History Collection through a partnership with NASA and the National Archives. The video offers the scopes for the Archives’ three collecting areas and features unique items from various collections in those areas. If you have never visited the Archives, this tour video is a great introduction to familiarize yourself before visiting us. The Archives’ Associate Director is now using the tour video to introduce the Archives to potential donors, UHCL classes and students, and for grant applications. In order to help UHCL faculty, students, and outside researchers become more familiar with the Archives, the UHCL Archives produced its first ever Archives research guide with general information about the Archives, as well as individual guides for all four of its archival collections. These guides provide detailed researching tips, information researchers should know before arrival, usage and handling rules for using the Archives’ materials, and inventories of the collections and series of materials available for the various collecting areas. There is also a page for potential donors to the Archives, providing most of the information one would need to know when considering donating archival materials. The Archives is using these guides for offsite researchers, to make their research experience for efficient and provide them with greater context for our collections. UHCL LIBRARIES | PAGE 19
