Message from the Executive Director

Greetings!

It is my great pleasure to present to you this 50th Anniversary edition of the UHCL Libraries’ Annual Report In this edition, we reflect on fifty years of library development and innovation, while highlighting significant recent achievements. Both the Alfred R. Neumann Library and the UHCL at Pearland Library serve as dynamic centers of campus life, fostering a passionate, confident, and forward-thinking community through innovative scholarship and learning

We begin this year’s report with a brief history of the UHCL Libraries, written by our colleague, Laura Bernal, and informed by the work of the UHCL Archives and our 50th AnniversaryLibrary History project team Further in, we highlight the men and women who led the Libraries, and we showcase a timeline of significant events in our history since 1974

In these pages, you will also learn about our successes in the 2023–2024 academic year. Every library department is featured this year, and I invite you to learn about the role each one plays in supporting the campus community. Please also read about the new colleagues who have joined us this year, and about the scholarly activity of our librarians. Besides the content in this Annual Report, we invite you to view additional content online at History of UHCL Libraries There is so much to celebrate in our fiftieth year that we couldn’t fit it all in the printed report!

I am grateful for the dedication and expertise of our library staff, whose commitment to excellence and service ensures our continued success as a vital resource for the UHCL community. Thank you for your support of the UHCL Libraries as we work to enrich the lives of our students and to help them achieve academic and personal success

All the best,

OUR STORY

Neumann Library’s history is one of growth, innovation, and resilience. When the library first opened in 1974 as the UH-CLC Library, it was located in a temporary wing of the Arbor Building with only one librarian and no books. The library’s founding director, Dr. William Walter Wicker, spent his first year acquiring books and furniture from Parson’s College (Fairfield, Iowa) and St. Joseph’s College (Emmitsburg, Maryland) to create a welcoming campus library. Since the library did not have a permanent home yet, most acquisitions were stored at a temporary warehouse in Pasadena.

The library’s permanent relocation to the Bayou Building in 1975 ignited its first era of exploration and innovation. The library immediately added a Curriculum Library, Book Review Center, and classrooms for students. Meanwhile, library staff began pioneering new library systems. In 1980, the library became a selective Federal Depository Library for government documents. The biggest change, however, was renaming the library to honor founding chancellor Dr. Alfred R. Neumann in 1983.

The library’s second decade in operation was a period of professional growth. Dr. Wicker’s departure in 1986 marked the end of the library’s foundational decade. Dr. Michael Lee, the library’s first Asian American director, joined the library in 1986. Under his brief leadership, Neumann Library strengthened its external connections. In 1987, NASA Johnson Space Center helped library staff repair thousands of items damaged during a sprinkler malfunction. The following year, Neumann Library became the first state depository in the Galveston-Brazoria-Harris Counties area. More importantly, Dr. Lee partnered with Rosenberg Library to finally open the UHCL Archives in 1990, an idea that first emerged as early as 1982.

Neumann Library entered the twenty-first century ready for more opportunities. Shortly before the century’s turn, the library’s third director, Dr. S. Joe McCord, introduced the TexShare program, a statewide shared digital network.

Under his guidance, the library also upgraded its computer hardware. This enabled access to the Internet for the first time. The biggest milestone during his leadership, however, was the Space Act Agreement. This agreement between the UHCL Archives and Special, NASA Johnson Space Center, and National Archives Records relocated the JSC History Collection to the UHCL Archives and Special Collections.

The library experienced one more period of growth and exploration before the COVID-19 pandemic. As the Library Director between 2002 and 2019, Karen Wielhorski oversaw several milestones, including the opening of the UHCL at Pearland Library, the expansion of Archives & Special Collections, launching DSpace, piloting a new Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) program, and launching a new library catalog system.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point for Neumann Library. Under Dr. Vivenne McClendon’s leadership, Neumann Library pivoted to modified services during the pandemic. Renovations of the main floor from May 2022 to February 2023 further reduced on-campus access. Neumann Library used this period to enhance its facilities. Changes included transforming its classroom into an Active Learning Classroom, adding a new XR Lab, and installing new flexible furniture. Renovations concluded in March 2023, which the library celebrated with a soft opening in February and a grand reopening in October of that same year.

As the UHCL Libraries celebrate fifty years, it is shaping up to be a new era full of opportunities and milestones Under this new leadership, it will be an era shaped by Lee Andrew Hilyer’s project management background As the library’s story continues to unfold, it is exciting to know that it will continue to be one about growth, innovation, and resilience

ACCESS & DELIVERY SERVICES

The Access & Delivery Services team was busy throughout the year fulfilling its central goal of providing users access to collections, technology, and spaces. Demand for library spaces was extraordinarily high this year, with all library study rooms frequently at full capacity.

To help facilitate future renovations and the expansion of library study areas, the department headed a library-wide deaccessioning project to remove out-of-date and unused volumes from the collection. Access Services staff removed over 40,000 items this year and will continue work on this project into the next year.

Interlibrary Loan services, in collaboration with the Technology & Resource Management Team, introduced Article Galaxy Scholar, a service which provides nearinstant access to requested articles for faculty. We also embarked on the first account maintenance project since migrating to the ILLiad platform ten years ago and created procedures for regular future maintenance

After years of relying on staff to notify patrons of library closing times, the Access Services department installed a new intercom system with automated closing announcements. We also drew up plans for comprehensive written library policies to ensure a respectful, safe, and enjoyable environment for all library users.

RESEARCH AND INSTRUCTION

“Our mission is to foster academic and lifelong success within the UHCL community through the development of information literacy, critical thinking, and research skills.”

The library’s Research and Instruction department offers services that support teaching and learning. In the past year, we expanded our menu of learning tools and introduced new avenues through which students can benefit from our expertise.

A significant step forward for the department was embedding library services within Canvas, the university’s Learning Management System. The Research and Instruction team created an introductory library module that teaches students the basics of accessing library resources and the library’s role in student success. The module is now accessible as one of the main menu options in all Canvas courses. In addition, we developed interactive Canvas learning modules for several important research topics, which faculty can easily add to their course content.

The department’s progress extends beyond Canvas content We also developed new instructional videos and research guides, including a guide to help students learn how to effectively and ethically integrate AI into their academic work. Additionally, the team expanded standardized content for commonly requested library instruction sessions, such as introductory writing courses.

We also introduced new opportunities for students to connect with librarians. The library is part of the Navigate app as a caregiver unit, enabling students to request research assistance directly through it. In addition to continuing to offer scheduled research consultations, the team began offering scheduled library orientations for students who may not yet have a specific research topic but wish to learn more about how the library can support their educational journey.

XR LAB

The Emerging Technologies Librarian had significant success in establishing the Neumann Library’s XR Lab as a resource to facilitate learning. Throughout the year, the catalog of available XR applications expanded Research and Instruction Librarians worked with the Emerging Technologies Librarian to highlight some of these new applications by hosting fun library events for students, such as a Beat Saber Tournament with Campus Recreation on Halloween and Virtual Zen in April. Several faculty also seized this opportunity to introduce the XR Lab into their courses. Virtual reality experiences requested by faculty included “Notes on Blindness” and “Traveling While Black.”

The XR Lab also hosted visitors outside of the UHCL community. On Halloween, the XR Lab staff hosted Houston Community College’s Reality ColLab and their “EnchanTech Metaverse Castle” project. The following month, the XR Lab served as a hosting medium for the 2023 “Sustainable Stories Film Festival.” In February, a French class from the noncredit UHCL Foreign Language Program used the Mondly VR Experience to practice speaking French in different virtual environments. Lastly, the XR Lab hosted a Friday Morning Continuing Education session in May.

Despite the departure of the Emerging Technologies Librarian in May, the lab remains open for students and staff to explore XR technology.

Thomas Elrod (XR Lab Student Assistant), Lee Andrew Hilyer, (Executive Library Director), and Beth Fridrick (Emerging Technologies Librarian) visited the Johnson Space Center’s VR training facilities in September
During the 2023 Sustianble Stories Film Festival and Juried Art Exhibition, the XR Lab displayed the VR pieces submitted to the festival’s art exhibition

SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS

Scholarly Communications completed several projects during 2023-24. We created and implemented the UHCL Libraries Pilot OER Grant Program, which encourages and supports the use of open educational resources by UHCL faculty. We received several applications and were able to award a total of $9,000 to seven faculty members to assist with the adoption, adaptation, and creation of OER for their courses in the fall of 2024. We plan to continue the program with a second round of awards in 2024-25.

This year, we also finished digitizing the 1,756 print theses produced by University of Houston-Clear Lake graduate students from 1974 to 2015 and uploaded them to HawkWorks, the university’s institutional repository. Electronic theses and dissertations submitted since Fall 2015 have been accessible in HawkWorks. However, the digitization of these historical works enables us to host a comprehensive collection of the academic output from graduate students throughout the university’s history.

Each semester, we assist UHCL graduate students as they prepare their theses and dissertations for submission and publication. This year, we worked with 66 graduate students in this capacity. In an effort to better assist students, we developed a tutorial to help them understand the process and use the myriad resources we provide. This tool has helped us ensure that students are even better prepared as they finalize their work with us.

TECHNOLOGY & RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

This academic year was a busy one for the Technology & Resources Management Team. Every decision that we made was to ensure that we continue providing high-quality materials for students, faculty, and researchers.

Throughout the year, we collaborated with OIT to implement Single Sign-On (SSO) integration across multiple digital resources and library service applications to ensure seamless access to online databases, research tools, and platforms for our patrons. Now, when patrons sign into their go.UHCL.edu (QuickLaunch) account, they can immediately access HawkWorks, ILLiad, Kanopy, and Primo/Library OneSearch.

Additionally, we successfully managed the procurement, cataloging, and licensing of books, journals, databases, and other resources. In September, we implemented our first Evidence Based Acquisition (EBA) collection, IGI Global Online e-book Collection, added more than 1,000 e-books from NetLibrary, and made more than 22,000 EBSCO e-book titles accessible in OneSearch. We also created the UHCL Faculty Authored Books collection, making it easier to locate books published by UHCL faculty and academic staff. Our final project of the year was the activation of the Schlager Digital Library, a collection of more than 2,000 primary sources.

Other notable projects included collaborating with Interlibrary Loan to implement Article Galaxy Scholar, adding new resource type bars to the OneSearch simple search, and facilitating the UHCL Institutional Repository’s upgrade to DSpace 7.0 with a new look and name.

PEARLAND

As it has in previous years, the Pearland Library served as the primary university service point at UHCL Pearland campus. Pearland Library staff answered over 1,500 questions from UHCL Pearland students and staff, Alvin Community College students, and a variety of community users.

Working in conjunction with the collection maintenance project at Neumann Library, Pearland Library staff conducted a review of collections at Pearland Library and removed out-of-date and unused materials. Pearland Library staff also regularly visited Neumann Library to participate in other projects, including refreshing the library’s highly used children’s collection with Research and Instruction Librarian, Theresa Rodriguez.

Archives & Special Collections Happenings

The UHCL Archives and Special Collections’ mission is to serve as a research center for the study of history and institutional memory of the University; and to promote knowledge and understanding of the origins, programs, goals, and accomplishments of the University. The UHCL Archives and Special Collection has the following collecting areas and collections in its holdings: University Archives, Human Space Flight Collection, Clear Lake Area Collection, and the Johnson Space Center (JSC) History Collection

UHCL Archives began the Collections Shelving Relocation Project to better manage our archival collections’ storage, labeling, and shelf space usage. We completed the relocation all of our three collecting areas University Archives, Human Space Flight Collection, and Clear Lake Area Collection—into new dedicated storage areas in our storage rooms. We are now implementing a new collections numbering system to help with this new storage. To help us better categorize and access records from different university departments, we also implemented a new University Archives records management system. We completed the project’s first four phases between May and August 2024, with the final phase to be completed in Fall 2024. UHCL Archives hired student worker Arielle Slaten to assist with this major project.

On April 19, 2024, UHCL Archives hosted NASA Johnson Space Center Director Vanessa Wyche and her senior leadership team. UHCL Archives staff gave Director Wyche a personal tour of the NASA Johnson Space Center Collection. For the visit, UHCL Archives staff also prepared a display in the reading room with unique archival materials for the visitors to explore. UHCL senior leadership, including President Dr. Richard Walker and Provost Dr. Christopher Maynard, were also present.

UHCL Archives implemented and successfully completed a NEH Preservation Assistance Grant for Smaller Institutions during the year. We used this grant to fund the first-ever professional preservation assessment of our spaces, archival holdings, archival practices, facilities, and staffing. We also hosted a disaster preparedness workshop for cultural heritage professionals in the greater Houston area at the UHCL Pearland campus to provide UHCL Archives staff with the training needed to create a new Archives disaster response plan. This is the first NEH grant that UHCL has ever received.

UHCL Archives completed the technical implementation of its new archival content management system, ArchivesSpace. The system will allow us to manage our archival collection acquisitions, collections’ donor information, storage location information, collections’ inventories and descriptions, and overall collection management. Through an online public catalog, the system will allow the public to search all of the department’s archival holdings within one location.

“Academic libraries and archives are the repositories of collective wisdom, where the past informs the present and inspires the future."
