Presented as part of our Thursday Scholarship Series

The Thursday Scholarship Series began in 1980 and continues the tradition of “Music Appreciation Programs” started by Hugh Hodgson in the 1930s. Proceeds from ticket sales to these concerts and contributions made by you are the primary means through which School of Music scholarship funds are raised each year.

PROGRAM AND TEXTS

I. Praise and Adoration

Gaudete Omnes JAN SWEELINCK (1562-1621)

Translation of Latin:

Rejoice all, and be glad For behold the longed-for one comes. Enter into his presence with exultation. Know that he is our hope. Alleluia!

Plaudite, Psallite KESTUTIS DAUGIRDAS (b. 1985)

Translation of Latin:

Clap your hands, sing prases, rejoice in God, all the earth. Let all nations bless the Lord, joining in his praises. For the Lord has had mercy on us, and has held captivity captive, wonderful and glorious for all ages. Hallelujah!

Marianne (England)

II. Folks Songs of Love and Loss

Fare thee well my own true love

Fare the well, my dear

For the ship is waiting and the wind blows free And I am bound away to the sea, Marianne.

Had I got a flask of gin, Sugar here for two, And a big gold bowl to mix it in, I′d pour a drink for you, dear Marianne.

Yonder don’t you see the dove

Sitting in the sky?

He′s mourning the loss of his own true love

As I do for you, my dear Marianne.

Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye (Ireland)

When going on the road to sweet Athy

A stick in me hand and a drop in me eye

A doleful damsel I heard cry,

Johnny I hardly knew ye.

With your drums and guns and drums and guns

The enemy nearly slew ye

Oh darling dear, Ye look so queer

Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Where are your eyes that look so mild

When my poor heart you first beguiled

Why did ye skedaddle from me and the child

Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

(South Africa)

Translation of isiXhosa:

The Lord has taken his son who lived amongst us

The son of the Lord God was crucified.

Hololo Father Jehova!

Arr. PHILIP WILBY (b. 1949)

Arr. ALICE PARKER (1925-2023)

Where are your legs with which ye run

When first you learned to carry a gun

Indeed your dancing days are done

Oh Johnny, I hardly knew ye.

I’m happy for to see ye home

All from the island of Sulloon

So low in flesh, so high in bone

Oh Johnny I hardly knew ye.

Indodana
Arr. MICHAEL BARRET & RALF SCHMITT

III. Eternal Light

I. Introitus

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. You are praised, God, in Zion, And homage will be paid to you  in Jerusalem: Hear my prayer, To you all flesh will come.

Rest eternal grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them.

II. In te Domine, Speravi

Thou, having delivered mankind, did not disdain the Virgin’s womb. Thou overcame the sting of death and opened to believers the kingdom of heaven.

A light has risen in the darkness for the upright.

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

Let thy mercy be upon us, O Lord, for we have hoped in thee. In thee, O Lord, I have trusted: let me never be confounded.

III. O Nata Lux

O born light of light, Jesus redeemer of the world, mercifully deem worthy and accept praises and prayers from your supplicants. Who once was clothed in the flesh for those who are lost. Allow us to become members of your holy body.

IV. Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Come, Holy Spirit, And send from heaven

Your ray of light.

Come, Father of the poor, Come, giver of gifts, Come, light of hearts.

The best of Consolers, Sweet guest of the soul, Sweet refreshment.

In labor, thou art rest, In heat, thou art the tempering, In grief, thou art the consolation.

O light most blessed, Fill the inmost heart

Of all thy faithful. Without your grace, There is nothing in us, Nothing that is not harmful.

V. Agnus Dei – Lux Aeterna

Cleanse what is dirty, Moisten what is dry,

Heal what is hurt.

Flex what is rigid,

Heat what is frigid, Correct what goes astray.

Grant to thy faithful, Those that trust in thee, Thy sacred seven-fold gifts.

Grant the reward of virtue, Grant the deliverance of salvation, Grant joy everlasting.

Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest forever. May eternal light shine on them, Lord, as with your saints in eternity, because you are merciful.

Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them, Alleluia. Amen.

Unclouded Day

IV. Faith & Hope

Oh, they tell me of a home far beyond the skies

Oh, they tell me of a home far away

Oh, they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise

Oh, they tell me of an unclouded day

Refrain:

Oh, the land of cloudless day

Oh, the land of an unclouded sky

Oh, they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise

Oh, they tell me of an unclouded day

Oh, they tell me of a home where my friends have gone

Oh, they tell me of that land far away

Where the tree of life in eternal bloom

Sheds its fragrance through the unclouded day

Refrain

Oh, they tell me of a King in His beauty there

And they tell me that mine eyes shall behold

Where He sits on the throne that is whiter than snow

In the city that is made of gold

Refrain Yonder Come Day (Georgia Sea Island Spiritual) Arr. MICHAEL ENGELHARDT
