ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Shakhida Azimkhodjaeva graduated from Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory where she performed with Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory Symphony Orchestra under direction of such conductors as Zubin Metha, Pierre Boulez, Dmitry Kitaenko, Valery Gergiev, and many others.

Ms. Azimkhodjaeva was one of the founders of the ARCO Chamber Orchestra.

As a concertmaster and soloist, she performed extensively in Germany, France, Spain, Romania, Latvia, Russia, South Korea, Brazil, USA, and Canada.

She has recorded numerous CDs with music of Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, and many other contemporary composers.

Ms. Azimkhodjaeva’s numerous performances include solo appearances at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall , Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro Sao Pedro in Brazil and Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory Concert Hall.

She has participated in international festivals such as Enesco Festival in Romania, FeMusik Festival in Brazil and Varna International Festival in South Carolina, USA

Her recent performance as a soloist was with Nairobi Symphony Orchestra in Kenya.

A native of Moscow, Anatoly Sheludyakov graduated from the Gnesin’s Musical Academy and completed doctoral studies there under professor Anatoly Vedernikov. He also graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in the composition class of Tikhon Khrennikov. His compositions include Variations for Orchestra, Ostinato for Orchestra, Suite for Oboe and Piano, Suite for Violin and Piano, the cantata Brotherhood Songs, Trombone Quartet, six vocal suites, and many other compositions.

Sheludyakov was winner of the 1977 Russian National Piano Competition and, in 1999, was awarded the name “Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.” He has performed solo concerts with orchestras, solo recitals, and chamber music in the most prestigious concert halls in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other major cities throughout Russia, Germany, France, Italy, China, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Australia and the USA. He has recorded twenty-five CDs of piano solo and chamber music and has performed on Russian Television and Radio. His repertoire includes the major works for piano, piano and orchestra, and piano chamber music of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods.

Prior to his UGA appointment, Sheludyakov was assistant professor of piano at the Gnesin Institute of Moscow and maintained a private piano studio. A vocalist as well as a pianist, Sheludyakov was active as a church musician, and performed authentic folk music as a soloist with the Pokrovsky Ensemble.

FACULTY RECITAL: MAGGIE SNYDER, viola

Violist Maggie Snyder is Professor of Viola at the University of Georgia, Principal Violist of the Chamber Orchestra of New York, with whom she records for Naxos, and is on the ArtistFaculty of the Brevard Music Festival. She has performed solo recitals, chamber music, concertos and as an orchestral musician throughout the United States and abroad.

BULLDOG BRASS SOCIETY

The Bulldog Brass Society is the premier graduate brass quintet at the University of Georgia. The Bulldogs were created in the fall of 1996 by Frederick Mills, founding member of the Canadian Brass and professor of trumpet at the Hodgson School until his passing in 2009.

“I WILL LIFT UP MINE EYES” COMBINED CHOIRS CONCERT

This concert features the UGA Glee Clubs and University Chorus.  Thom Dixon will conduct his DMA recital with the University Chorus – repertoire to include Adolphus Hailstork’s choral/orchestral cantata, “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes,” composed in memory of the great Undine Smith Moore, often referred to as the Dean of Black Women Composers.  Daniel Shafer will conduct the Glee Clubs along with graduate conducting students.

FACULTY ARTIST SERIES: MILTON MASCIADRI, double bass

Milton Masciadri, Doctor in Musical Arts, is a Distinguished University Professor of Double Bass at the University of Georgia in Athens, where he has been a member of the faculty at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music since 1984. In addition, he has served as the principal bassist for the Augusta Symphony since 1985. Dr. Masciadri is coordinator of the Hugh Hodgson School’s International and Study Abroad Program.

HODGSON SINGERS: LUX AETERNA

The Hodgson Singers spring concert will feature Morten Lauridsen’s “Lux Aeterna,” a multi-movement choral/ orchestral work of great reassurance and lyricism that is set to Latin texts from the Requiem Mass, Te Deum, O Nata Lux, and Veni, Sancte Spiritus, all of which ruminate on themes of light, a universal symbol of illumination at all levels –spiritual, artistic, and intellectual. Thursday Scholarship Performance.
