Praised by the New York Times as a pianist with “assurance and vitality,” Alan Woo made his Lincoln Center debut at Alice Tully Hall performing with the Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He has since collaborated with conductors Daniel Hege, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and Tito Muñoz in solo appearances with the Houston Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, and Music Academy of the West Festival Orchestra.

Woo’s recent engagements include solo recitals throughout the US, Brazil, Europe, and Asia. He has been featured on The McGraw Hill Financial Young Artists Showcase broadcasted on WQXR in New York and has performed in venues such as Carnegie’s Weill and Zankel Recital Halls. As chamber musician, he has made appearances at the New York Philharmonic Ensembles, Emory Chamber Music Society of Atlanta, Lake George Music Festival, Chamber Music Athens, Brooklyn Chamber Music Society, and La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest series, among others.

Born in Arlington, Virginia, Woo is a graduate of The Juilliard School and Peabody Conservatory where he completed degrees in piano performance under Robert McDonald and Yong Hi Moon. He currently teaches at the University of Georgia as an assistant professor of piano, having previously held positions at Elizabeth City State University and Peabody Institute.

Cor Moto is a professional horn duo comprised of James Naigus and Drew Phillips. Both composers, performers, and teachers. Edge Concert Hall is located on the third floor in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music.

Thursday Scholarship Series Performance GEORGIA BRASS QUINTET & GEORGIA WIND QUINTET

Ten of our powerhouse instrumental faculty returning to the stage this fall make up the Georgia Brass Quintet (GBQ) and the Georgia Woodwind Quintet (GWQ). The Brass Quintet features Brandon Craswell, trumpet; James Naigus, horn; Joshua Bynum, trombone; Matthew Shipes, tuba/euphonium; and introducing Gilbert Villagrana, trumpet. GWQ features Angela Jones-Reus, flute; Brandon Quarles, saxophone; D. Ray McClellan, clarinet; Amy Pollard, bassoon; and Jean MartinWilliams, horn.

“ON AGAIN, OFF AGAIN” BY FRERER WIND ENSEMBLE

Thursday Scholarship Series Performance

Described as “exciting…combining boom-crash orchestration with woozy portamenti and jazz elegance” by The New York Times, and “a force to be reckoned with” by Observer, the music of Australian composer Jack Frerer (b. 1995) blends influences from a diverse array of musical languages to craft dynamic and evocative works. His music combines bold, expressive gestures with vivid storytelling.

REPRETORY SINGERS

The Repertory Singers is a mixed chamber choir directed by graduate student conductors. Its format offers laboratory rehearsal and performance experience for conductors and singers alike.

GUEST ARTIST RECITAL: MYLES BOOTHROYD saxophone

Myles Boothroyd is a performing saxophonist, teacher, and music scholar. Boothroyd serves as Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Oklahoma and has been a member of both the Wisconsin-based Generation Quartet and the award-winning East End Quartet.
