The “UGA British Brass Band” (UGABBB) was established in August 2014, coinciding with the appointment of Philip Smith as Prokasy Professor in the Arts to the trumpet faculty of the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Members of the band are chosen through audition each semester. Its instrumentation, which is standard for brass bands around the world, is…
• 1 Eb Soprano Cornet
• 10 Bb Cornets
• 1 Bb Flugelhorn
• 4 Eb Tenor (Alto) Horns
• 2 Bb English Baritones
• 3 Bb Tenor Trombones
• 1 Bass Trombone
• 2 Bb Euphoniums
• 2 Eb Basses
• 2 Bb Basses
• 3-4 Percussionists
Because of the conical nature of these brass instruments, the sound of the band is more lush and mellow than the typical orchestral brass ensemble. The exception is the trombone section, which acts as the trumpet sound of the band. With these attributes, the brass band can play from the most intimate to the most dynamic and vibrant of colors.
In its short history, the UGABBB has quickly become a favorite of audiences of all ages. The band performs an annual Fall and Spring Festival on campus and has performed numerous times in the Athens/Atlanta area. Performances have included the 2023 Inauguration of Governor Brian Kemp, UGA Holiday Concerts, Chick-fil-A Christmas Open House, UGA Performing Arts Center’s Saturday Morning Club, and UGA JanFest. The band has also performed at the Oconee County Civic Center, and in concert series at the Milledge Avenue Baptist Church in Athens and Gainesville First United Methodist Church. The UGABBB has performed in joint concert with the prestigious Salvation Army Southern Staff Band. The band embarks on occasional weekend trips to bring the joy of banding to others.
The UGA BBB has competed at the North American Brass Band Association competition in 2017, scoring a Third Place standing in the First Division, and in 2022.
Performing guests have included David Childs, Euphonium; Sheona White, Tenor Horn; Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombone, NY Philharmonic; Stuart Stephenson, Principal Trumpet, Dallas Symphony Orchestra; James Scott, Principal Trombone, Calgary Philharmonic; Joseph Turrin, pianist and composer; David Zerkel, Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, University of Michigan; and UGA Professors Joshua Bynum, Brandon Craswell, Jean Martin-Williams, James Naigus, and Matthew Shipes. The band also regularly features its own soloists from within the band.
Philip Smith joined the Hugh Hodgson School of Music at the University of Georgia as the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professor in the Arts in August 2014. In addition to teaching his trumpet studio, he is the Bandmaster of the UGA British Brass Band, member of the faculty Georgia Brass Quintet, and coach of the Bulldog Brass Society. This position follows his retirement from the New York Philharmonic after 36 years of service as Principal Trumpet, having joined the New York Philharmonic in October 1978.
Smith’s father, Derek Smith, a renowned English cornet soloist, provided his early training. He is a graduate of The Juilliard School, having studied with Edward Treutel and William Vacchiano, former Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. In January 1975, while still at Juilliard, Sir Georg Solti appointed Mr. Smith to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Smith has appeared regularly as soloist, recitalist, chamber orchestra performer, and clinician. He has been featured as a soloist with the Philharmonic performing with conductors Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, Erich Leinsdorf, Leonard Bernstein, Neeme Järvi, Lorin Maazel, Alan Gilbert and Bramwell Tovey. Repertoire highlights have included the world premiere of Joseph Turrin’s Trumpet Concerto with the New York Philharmonic (1989) and its subsequent European premiere with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (1994). Additional New York Philharmonic performances have included the U.S. premiere of Jacques Hetu’s Trumpet Concerto (1992), the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann’s Concerto (2000), and the world premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Double Concerto for Trumpet, Trombone, and Orchestra (2003). He has also been a guest soloist with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, and the symphonies of Edmonton, Newfoundland, South Dakota, Sioux City, Cedar Rapids (Iowa), Columbus (Indiana), Pensacola (Florida), Hartford (Connecticut), and Beaumont (Texas).
Brandon Craswell is Professor of Trumpet and Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies for the Hodgson School of Music. He has played with the Atlanta, Charleston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and Honolulu Symphonies, as well as guest principal trumpet with the Santiago, Chile Philharmonic.
Jean Martin Williams is Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music. She teaches horn, directs the University of Georgia Horn Choir, coaches chamber music, and is a member of the Georgia Woodwind Quintet. Dr. Martin-Williams served for eleven years as the Director of UGA’s Lilly Teaching Fellows program, under the auspices of the Center for Teaching and Learning.
James Naigus is Assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Georgia and hornist with the Georgia Brass Quintet. He is co-founder of the Cor Moto Horn Duo with Dr. Drew Phillips, and co-editor/contributor of the Creative Hornist and Technique Tips columns in the Horn Call, the journal of the International Horn Society.
In addition to serving as Professor of Trombone at the University of Georgia, Josh Bynum is an artist & clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company. He spends summers as artist faculty for the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and performs regularly as a first-call substitute with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Atlanta Opera Orchestra.
Matthew Shipes is the Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at The University of Georgia. Prior to his 2020 appointment, Shipes held a position in the U.S. Air Force Ceremonial Brass and was also principal tubist with the San Angelo Symphony.
