DEAR PROSPECTIVE SPONSOR, The UCLU Public Affairs and Social Service (PASS) Society is a non-profit-making student organisation in University College London (UCL). We aim to ponder sociopolitical and environmental issues that are pervading the world via discussion and debate, while benefiting the less fortunate through active social service such as volunteering and fundraising. Originally founded by a group of enthusiastic Hong Kong students in 2011, UCLU PASS also provides a wide range of mentorship programs and career-oriented opportunities for UCL students, strengthening the bond between our members and peers from other societies and universities. Striving to become the “home away from home” for Hong Kong students at UCL, we organise a variety of social events for Hong Kong students, including a joint-university freshers’ induction night before departure in early September. As the first student society at UCL to establish contact with most Hong Kong freshers, we have direct access to more than 130 new UCL Hong Kong students each year, with over 280 current students subscribed to our emailing list. The Society also possess a growing social media presence with around 350 Facebook and 110 Instagram followers. Obtaining minimal funding from our student union, we rely heavily on external sponsorship to cover hire-, purchase- and promotional-related expenses for our events and activities. Our sponsors enjoy the benefits of increased publicity and exposure through our functions and publications. With a strong and diversified membership base comprising of students from various academic disciplines, our society is an ideal focal point for employers wishing to discover and engage potential employees. Please find the following as further details on our society’s background and sponsorship options for your perusal. It is only with the ongoing support of our generous sponsors that many of our functions continue to come to fruition, allowing our society to develop into the meaningful establishment it is today. We would lastly like to express our genuine appreciation for your time and consideration. Yours faithfully,

Justin Yim President UCLU Public Affairs and Social Service Society 2016-2017

INTRODUCTION TO UCLU PASS The University College London Union Public Affairs and Social Service Society (UCLU PASS) is a well-established society in University College London (UCL). The number of students in our reach has been increasing steadily, as we continued to target incoming UCL students from Hong Kong over the years.

1

PUBLIC AFFAIRS

to raise awareness about socio-political and environmental issues in Hong Kong, China and the rest of the world through discussion and debate;

22 SOCIAL SERVICE

to benefit the underprivileged through social service activities such as volunteering and fundraising;

3 4 CAREERS

to provide a platform for students to be exposed to information about careers development; and

IDEAs EXCHANGE

to collaborate with other societies and universities so as to promote the exchange of ideas

As a society, we define ourselves as an intellectual community that is not only aware of our surroundings, but is also motivated to constantly engage in new challenges. We debate and discuss current affairs, while proposing new ideas to solve the ever present socio-economic and geopolitical problems. We as a society also strive to arouse students’ interest in this area, by encouraging our fellow peers to examine these social issues in multiperspectives through various activities.

We also provide numerous opportunities for our members to help those in need. Understanding how privileged we are as university students in a wonderful learning environment, we not only cherish the opportunities given, but would also like to give back to our society. Besides, what better ways are there to gain a thorough insight into our society than working hand-in-hand with various stakeholders to tackle different social problems? Therefore, we organize different service programmes throughout the year for our members to enrich their experience outside classrooms.

Our Career and Events branch has been established since 2014, with the aspiration to provide Hong Kong students with guidance and support. We establish ties with firms from various industries and organize a number of careers events, including mentorship programmes, skills sessions and firm visits, with the aim of maximizing members’ exposure to careers opportunities.

2

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 2016-2017 Our committee members this year are from a diverse range of faculties, which presented an opportunity for us to understand of the operation of different industries and careers. KEY EVENTS HIGHLIGHTS * New initatives 2016

London 4U induction night is jointly presented by UCLU PASS, IC PASS, KCL PASS, LSESU HKPASS, QM HKPASS and is the first opportunity we have to formally greet the HK freshers. In this session, we will share with them some useful tips on London transport, restaurants, travelling and other bargains. We will also provide them with information on our upcoming activities.

The God-Parent Scheme (GPS) was established to guide freshers into University life. We hope to continue this programme so that freshers can have an idea of how university life is and how to tackle problems that the senior students have previously faced. Through this scheme, we aim to foster a close relationship between the fresher’s and upper year students and to guide the freshers in their transition from secondary school to university.

A co-hosted forum focusing on Hong Kong’s socio-political issues, including issues on the past democratic movements, and the 2017 Chief Executive Election. Possible speakers include Mr. Lau Ming-wai (劉鳴煒) and Mr. Holden Chow (周浩鼎). We hope this forum will deepen members’ understanding about Hong Kong public affairs.

London 4U Induction Night

The Amazing Raise is our flagship event and was highly successful in previous years. This year we aspired to continue the tradition and are determined to organize the best Amazing Raise anyone has ever witnessed. This event is open to university students from all across the UK. On the race day, teams will first gather at UCL before travelling to checkpoints dotted across central London, where they must complete set tasks to earn points for their team.

The programme is designed to offer members with the opportunity of being mentored by a fresh graduate in their field from the Hong Kong Society. Our members can benefit from their experience of their transition out of university and into the world of work.

Our first-ever overseas service trip commenced in June 2016 and visited the Treetop organisation (http://www. treetopcountry.org) in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Our volunteers taught english and mathematics classes to local children in various levels, and helped out in farming and the construction of village facilities.
