LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: JOSE FREDI HERNANDEZ
Every person may have a different definition or meaning of pride, but we have all experienced some form of it nonetheless. Pride is selfrespect and personal worth; a sense of satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired. The sensation is often complemented by so many other character traits; loyalty, honest, courage, dignity and more.
change life for many others.
Many students arrive on campus in awe, amazed by the endless opportunities available at one of the finest universities in the world. This environment challenges them to engage with similarly brilliant peers, participating in an array of students groups and activities.
The fans in the stand are proud to wear true blue and gold to support teams in their quest for another championship.
With success prevalent throughout the UCLA community, Pride also takes on many meanings both on and off campus. The students arriving at orientation for their first college experience are both proud of previous accomplishments and excited for the journey ahead. The scientists young and old are proud to make the next breakthrough discovery and hopeful that may
The volunteers are proud to make a difference in such a dynamic environment by giving back and altruistically helping others in need. The future officers committed to military service are proud to selflessly serve a cause in which they wholeheartedly believe. The athletes who have trained for the majority of their lives are proud to wear their uniforms and represent the nation’s elite, driven to extend their alma mater’s sports legacy.
The families at commencement are proud to see years of hard work and dedication culminate in a valuable degree as the students receive their diplomas. There are many reasons to be proud at UCLA and every Bruin can reflect in his or her unique way. Every student has personally contributed to this prestigious institution in some way or another, upholding the legendary reputation associated with UCLA. This service is what makes our community continue to thrive. I am confident that we will all carry this with us on our journey into the future as we move on to new
communities and shape the world around us. We should be grateful for the amazing opportunities provided by UCLA and cherish the valuable lessons we have learned. Still, with great opportunities comes an even greater sense of duty so we must be humble and let this pride inspire us to excel without being overpowered by arrogance or conceit. Be proud of unparalleled programs and services, world-class faculty and a beautiful campus in the hills of Westwood. Be proud of our excellence and diversity. Be proud of the student clubs, groups and organizations. Be proud of the Nobel Prizes, awards, and other achievements that symbolize painstaking efforts. Be proud of the countless Olympians, superstars and a record number of team championships. Be proud of remarkable, worldrenowned research. Be proud of the selfless service to our community.
Be a proud Bruin. Be Proud UCLA!
