American Language Center English for International Students Study Abroad
Popular Programs and Services
Academic and Professional English Training–American Language Center (ALC)
For students who want to prepare to study in a U.S. university, certificate program, or for personal or professional purposes, our programs take a rigorous and interactive approach to instruction. Advanced academic courses provide UCLA-approved transferable credit.

Academic and Career Advising
This program is for students who plan to apply to university or pursue professional development. No-cost advising for full-time students includes guidance in choosing a college, university, or professional certificate program, meeting admissions requirements, completing applications, and writing admissions essays. We also provide career guidance to working professionals.
Study Abroad

This program is for international university students currently enrolled in a degree program in their home country. Students can study at UCLA for 1–2 quarters and experience life in Los Angeles in much the same way as American students.
Certificate Programs
Our certificate programs offer over 40 specialized fields for international students and are taught by industry experts. Popular certificates include Digital Marketing, Sustainability, Business of Entertainment, Filmmaking, and International Trade and Commerce. Programs provide access to internships, optional practical training (OPT), advising, career services, and the UCLA Global Alumni Network.
Academic Writing and Presentations Skills
For students who want to prepare to study at a U.S. university, certificate program, or for personal or professional purposes, these courses focus on writing and presentation skills relevant to their chosen fields of study.

Campus and Community Connections (CCC)

Would you like to be part of an international community of students in Los Angeles? This optional course is available to all full-time students at no additional cost. Campus and Community Connections provides valuable opportunities to network and connect with the international community within UCLA Extension, on campus, and beyond. Attend events, gain access to valuable resources, schedule a meetup, listen to guest speakers, and learn about volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood. CCC has something for every student looking to be active and involved in the community.
Instructor Spotlight
Shelley Reece
Ms. Reece has been an instructor at the American Language Center since 2007. She holds an MA in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pennsylvania and served in the Peace Corps in Poland after graduating. Ms. Reece specializes in helping students improve their communication skills and teaches a very popular elective called Pronunciation and Presentations. In this capacity, Ms. Reece has helped countless students improve their speaking and presentation techniques—a much-need skill for today’s working professional or college student. She also specializes in training actors and public speakers by helping with accent reduction and presentation skills. In 2014, Ms. Reece was recognized for her dedication to education and excellence in teaching by being awarded UCLA Extension’s Distinguished Instructor Award.
