ucla summer for high school students UCLA offers high school students two ways to engage in challenging academics while earning college credit. Sign up for one of our Summer Institutes, designed exclusively for motivated high school students interested in exploring subjects in the arts, sciences, politics, and more. ACTING & PERFORMANCE | JUNE 22 - JULY 31 Includes performance training, workshops, excursions, and a final performance project. Designed for high school students with a serious interest in theater or a career in the performing arts. Admission is by instructor consent only.

ART | SESSION A: JULY 6 - JULY 17, SESSION B: JULY 20 - JULY 31 Increases students’ artistic skills in categories such as painting, drawing, digital photography, or sculpture. Sessions are structured around studio work, lectures, presentations, field trips, and a final exhibition. Admission is by instructor consent only. Optional residential plan.

DANCE/PERFORMING ARTS INTENSIVE | JUNE 20 - JUNE 28 Mixes the disciplines of dance, theater, music, and social activism. This interdisciplinary program helps students learn to choreograph their own work with new tools and culminates with a final performance. Admission is by instructor consent only. Mandatory residential plan.

DESIGN MEDIA ARTS (DMA) | JULY 6 - JULY 17 Intensive introductory course in four aspects of design: graphic, web, game, and audiovisual. Using the most current software and technology, this program combines lab and one-on-one instruction, allowing students to develop projects and build portfolios. Mandatory residential plan.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS | JUNE 21 - JUNE 27 Simulates the way governments work together, introducing students to international diplomacy and foreign affairs. Students will take on the role of a diplomat, engage in independent research, and debate on one of the many United Nations committees. Mandatory residential plan.

MOCK TRIAL | JULY 12 - JULY 18 An intensive introduction to the nation’s legal system that culminates in a public mock trial presentation. Participants will visit the UCLA School of Law and LA Federal Courthouse. Learn about direct and cross examination techniques, exhibits and impeachments, objections, rules of evidence, and witness portrayal. Mandatory residential plan.

NANOSCALE MICROSCOPY LAB | AUGUST 3 - AUGUST 7 A hands-on learning opportunity for pre-college students on scientific imaging. Students will receive an exploratory introduction to the key micro-scale techniques for nanoscience research. This Summer Institute will include laboratory time for sample preparation techniques and use of scientific instruments for measurements. Admission is by instructor consent only. Optional residential plan.

NANOSCIENCE LAB | SESSION A: JULY 6 - JULY 10, SESSION B: JULY 13 - JULY 17 Questions similar to those currently under investigation by the scientific community are explored. Students will participate in hands-on experiments using scientific methodologies and techniques. Admission is by instructor consent only. Optional residential plan.


SCI | ART NANOLAB | JULY 20 - JULY 31 Connects cutting edge scientific research, popular culture, and contemporary arts. Includes visits to labs and museums as well as workshops and meetings with renowned scientists and contemporary artists. Designed for upper level high school students. Admission is by instructor consent only. Mandatory residential plan.

TEEN ARCHSTUDIO | JULY 20 - JULY 31 Structured like a design studio, this intensive program focuses on developing design skills. Students experience the profession hands on through design projects, field trips to landmark buildings and LA-based architectural offices, and learning how to create a portfolio. Admission is by instructor consent only. Optional residential plan.

WRITING WORKSHOP | JULY 7 - JULY 28 Prepares students for college-level writing challenges and addresses essentials such as timed essay exams, composing effective e-mails, and personal statements for college applications. All activities will demystify the differences between college and high school writing.

COLLEGE-LEVEL ACADEMIC COURSES | SESSION A: STARTING JUNE 22 SESSION C: STARTING AUGUST 3 Study alongside UCLA undergraduate students through enrollment in lower-division classes. More than 100 UCLA academic courses in 55 subject areas make up UCLA’s undergraduate curricula and are open to high school students during the summer. See the following page for more information.


Students must be 15 years of age prior to September 1, 2015 in order to take undergraduate courses. Most universities, including all University of California campuses, recognize UCLA credits.

Examples of available courses: Anthropology 9: Introduction to the study of culture and society. Economics 1: Introduction to principles of economic analysis, economic institutions, and issues of economic policy. English Composition 2: Examines approaches to University writing with analysis and critique of university-level texts. Emphasis on revision for argumentative coherence and effective style. Ethnomusicology 50A: Jazz in the American culture including important historical social issues (Depression, World War II, Civil Rights Movement) that intersect with history of the U.S. and jazz music. Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology 50: Stem Cell Biology, Politics, and Ethics. Covers various topics including human, embryonic, and hematopoietic stem cells as well as the social, ethical, economic aspects of stem cell research. (High school students only) Music C90E: Group performance of symphonic literature, as well as orchestral accompaniment for operatic and major choral works. Psychology 10: Introduction to psychology including topics in cognitive, experimental, personality, developmental, social, and clinical psychology. Physics 10: Topics include planetary motion, Newton’s laws, gravitation, electricity and magnetism, wave motion, light, sound, and heat, relativity, quantum mechanics, and subatomic particles.
