ieo.ucla.edu/ STUDY ON LOCATION The UCLA International Education Office organizes more than 25 summer study abroad programs in locations all over the world. UCLA Summer Travel Study programs combine the excitement of study abroad with the academic rigor of classes taught by UCLA faculty. Program options span a wide range of subject areas and are tailored to fit easily into any student’s academic career. Travel Study uses location as both laboratory and classroom, offering unique opportunities to integrate cities and cultures into the curriculum. Enrollment is open to students from any college, university, major, or minor. There is no minimum GPA requirement to participate.

ACADEMIC FORMAT UCLA Summer Travel Study courses are part of UCLA’s regular curriculum and carry full academic credit. Courses are taught in an intense format, last between three and six weeks, and earn between 8 and 18 units of UCLA credit. All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

REGISTRATION Registration begins Nov. 15, 2014 and students can register on the website. Space is limited and applications will be accepted in the order received. A $300 nonrefundable registration fee is required to reserve space in the program.

/travelstudy BUDGET Cost varies by program. The average UCLA Summer Travel Study program fee is about $5600 and includes registration, course fees, accommodations, academic excursions, and insurance. Airfare, textbooks, and spending money are separate and not included in the program fee. Please see the UCLA Summer Travel Study website for details on estimated expenses for each program.

FINANCIAL AID Financial aid is available for qualified UC students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is due by March 2, 2015. A separate Travel Study financial aid application is due April 3, 2015 for UCLA students. Non-UCLA students should consult their home institutions about financial aid availability, processes, and deadlines.

SCHOLARSHIPS Depending on the program and criteria, some students may be eligible for scholarships. Interested students should consult the UCLA IEO website or meet with a study abroad counselor for more information.

ACCOMMODATIONS Housing arrangements vary by program and range from hotels and residential facilities to home stays.

americas Buenos Aires: Spanish Culture, Urban Experience, & Social Inter action Experience full immersion in the rich cultural resources, vibrant social life, and political activities of Buenos Aires. Students will visit popular grassroots theaters, historical sites, and museums. An important component of this program is Community Based Learning — an irreplaceable opportunity to be exposed to experimental learning aimed at enhancing students’ language proficiency, increasing social interaction with locals, and promoting cultural awareness and understanding through meaningful experiences in intern and volunteer work.

Havana: International & Area Studies Revolutionar y Culture & Popular Religion in Cuba Travel to Cuba, a country with a dramatic history and dynamic culture. The program offers an overview of Cuban history and its colonial past, including the emergence of unique Afro-Cuban religious traditions. Students will learn about the transformations brought on by the revolution in terms of everyday life and popular culture, many of which remain in practice today.

Honolulu: Asian American Studies Pacific Islander Communities Develop a nuanced understanding of Hawaii’s Asian and Pacific Islander communities through a multidisciplinary survey of their history, culture, and community issues. Students can enjoy sun, sand, and surf while investigating topics concerning indigeneity, politics, economy, representation, and colonialism. Through field visits, discussions, and research opportunities, the program seeks to broaden students’ understanding of Hawaii and the Pacific.

Merida: Spanish Spanish in Mexico Spend a month this summer in the beautiful colonial city of Merida in the state of Yucatan. The city is lined with elegant 19th-century mansions, where people can still travel in horse‑drawn carriages. Merida is a half hour from the sea, and features a tranquil lifestyle with modern-day conveniences. Students can immerse in the region’s cultural offerings, making it a perfect place to study and improve Spanish language skills while also observing pre-Hispanic and modern Mayan culture.

New York: Global Studies

Er a of Globalization

Survey the international crossroads of New York, where global policy is formed on issues ranging from terrorism to HIV prevention. Students will study the architecture of contemporary global governance and its premier international institution, the United Nations. The program also considers how other major international organizations, such as the World Bank, interact with the United Nations to influence public policy around the world.

New York: Sociology Cities & Cultures Explore the newest developments in New York art, architecture, and society by looking at areas of the city that are being rebuilt and the effects of this rebirth on the neighborhoods around them. In a format that combines seminars, discussions, and field trips, students will learn about the new face of New York, including the rebuilding of the World Trade Center and the redevelopment of Times Square.

Salvador da Bahia: Portuguese Por tuguese Language in the Br azilian Context Take advantage of a unique opportunity to study and live in Salvador da Bahia, on the northeast coast of Brazil. This program offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced Portuguese language courses in one of Brazil’s foremost cultural centers. Students will study Bahian culture and its indigenous African and Portuguese influences through guest lectures and interaction with the residents of this vibrant seaport.

San Juan: Afro-American Studies Political & Social Movements Experience the unique geographic and political location of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Politically, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and its currency is the U.S. dollar. Culturally however, Puerto Rico is very much a Caribbean and Latin American society. In one setting, students can study not only issues of political and economic development in Latin America and the Caribbean, but also issues of race and ethnicity that are of domestic U.S. concern.


asia Beijing: Asian Languages & Cultures Business Chinese Witness China’s steady rise in economic power and its unique linguistic and cultural heritage this summer in Beijing. The program covers oral and written business communication with particular focus on social etiquette, the region’s economic and business climate, laws, and regulations. Students will have an opportunity to participate in local business practices through site visits and case studies.

Beijing: International & Area Studies Globalization & 21st Centur y China Travel to Beijing to understand China’s phenomenal rise in the world economy and international arena. No longer a hidden dragon, the nation is living up to the concept that the twenty-first century is China’s century. The program will look at China’s rise to the status of a globalized world power and the effect of this rise on the Chinese people. The program includes lectures, readings, discussions, and field trips.

Hong Kong: International & Area Studies Str ategic Business Communication & Global Leader ship Acquire the knowledge and skills required to become a future global leader. As one of the world’s leading financial and trade centers, Hong Kong is an ideal place for students to learn the components of global business and cross-cultural communication in an interconnected world. The program includes meetings with local business leaders, visits to key cultural and business sights, and guest lectures from professors with extensive regional knowledge.

Shanghai: Global Studies Consequences of the New Mar ket Economy Compare the old and the new in Shanghai by looking at the city’s booming economy, the role of the communist political system, and the changing lives of residents since the country’s opening to the West a decade ago. The effects of globalization in the Shanghai region are explored in classroom sessions and field trips. Students will study how globalization has affected the Shanghai region and the promise and perils of political, economic, and social development as they have played out in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.


europe Barcelona: Spanish Spanish & Catalan Liter ature & Culture Travel to Barcelona, a city famous for its beaches, architecture, cuisine, and vibrant nightlife — all of which have served as inspiration to many 20th-century artists, including Picasso, Dali, and Gaudi, architect of the colorful and iconoclastic Sagrada Familia. Through lectures, walking tours, and short day trips, students will gain an appreciation of modernday Barcelona for its cultural dynamism and its place in today’s Spain as the heart of Catalan culture.

Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, & London: Political Science European Politics Analyze European politics and examine individual systems of government and how they relate to the European Union. Students will travel from London, capital of the United Kingdom and most reluctant member of the Union, to Brussels, headquarters of the E.U., then on to Amsterdam and Paris. Lectures cover national political issues and how they relate to pan-European decision-making.

Granada, Barcelona, & Madrid: Spanish Spanish Language & Culture Combine the study of the Spanish language with travel and cultural exploration in Spain. Learn at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced language levels while exploring the historic cities of Granada, Barcelona, and Madrid. In addition, students will have the opportunity, via day trips, to discover other cities such as Toledo, Cordoba, and Sevilla.

Multiple Sites Across Greece: History Ancient Greece Study ancient history, philosophy, culture, and the origins of western civilization in Greece. Students will travel to Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Nauplion, Santorini, Crete and other destinations. The course explores ancient Greece through visits to classical archaeological sites, lectures, and readings of the Greek classics. The program features a cruise through the Greek islands.

London: Art History Ar t in the Global City Examine the impact of globalization on contemporary art by actively engaging in London’s dynamic inter-cultural and international art scene. This program surveys the changing contexts of collection and display, and the role of museums within the increasingly multicultural politics of the nation. Students will visit museums and archives as wells as participate in discussions and tours with artists, curators, and art world professionals.

London: English Literature Romanticism & the Age of Revolution Uncover the traces of one of the most turbulent and exciting moments in London’s history: the age of revolution at the end of the eighteenth century, which gave birth to the cultural explosion known as Romanticism. In addition to visits to museums, galleries, and archival collections, students will explore the remaining urban and architectural relics of Romantic London through a series of walking tours that revive a sense of daily life in a bygone age.

London & Stratford-upon-Avon: English Literature Shakespeare Enjoy an English summer in London and Stratford-upon-Avon studying the works of William Shakespeare. During this intensive program, students will read and analyze multiple plays and see performances by the esteemed Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford, Shakespeare’s birthplace, and at the Globe Theatre in London. There will also be opportunities to meet the actors, directors, and crews involved in these performances.

Paris: Art History Paris Past & Present - Medieval Ar t & Histor y in the Contempor ar y City Gain a glimpse of Paris during the Middle Ages when the city was the capital of European culture. This program employs the city of Paris — with its medieval monuments such as Notre Dame and the Sainte-Chapelle, as well as its unparalleled museums such as the Louvre and the Cluny — as a basis for the study of medieval art, architecture, and urban-national history.

Paris: French French Language & Culture Visit the City of Light this summer to improve fluency in the language while being immersed among the people and sights of Paris. The course is designed for students of French whose goals are speaking proficiency, improved written expression, and inter-cultural competence. This program features visits to museums and other storied and historic destinations in Paris.

Paris: Global Studies Global Challenges in Post-colonial Fr ance Investigate globalization in France, a country that has transformed from a colonial power to a member of today’s European Union. Its colonial past and immigrant communities have substantially affected the nation’s cultural and social environment. This course is based in Paris and looks at the French policy of assimilation, its successes, and its failures. Through readings, classroom discussions, and visits to international organizations, students view these issues in context while exploring one of the world’s most vibrant and beautiful cities.

Paris: History Medieval Paris Examine the history of France through lectures, walking tours, and short daily trips in Paris and the surrounding region. The program looks carefully at the transformation of Paris from a small medieval town into the symbolic capital of continental Europe. Students gain an enduring intimacy with the streets, monuments, and neighborhoods of the renowned French capital.

Paris, Normandy, & Brussels: International Business Law Legal & Tax Issues in the European Union Gain an in-depth understanding of international business from legal and tax perspectives. The course places special emphasis on the European Union and its regulatory system, as well as tax treaties between the U.S. and other countries of Europe. The program will feature time in Paris and Brussels with cultural and business visits to places of interest.

Rimini: Italian Italian Language & Culture Enjoy Italian language, literature, art, and culture in one of the most fascinating seaside towns on the Adriatic coast of Italy. With its 15 km-long sandy beach, Rimini has a rich history as a cultural crossroads between Rome and the East. The program will also visit nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ravenna and Urbino, to illustrate life and art through the ages.

Vienna, Munich, & Berlin: Germanic Studies Ger man Culture Across Europe Study the unique history and culture of Vienna, Munich, and Berlin — cities linked by a shared history and an emerging new identity. Students can choose from a selection of courses in German culture and language, including an introduction to German-language film. The program is designed for students of all backgrounds and majors; no previous knowledge of German is required.

middle east Istanbul: International & Area Studies A City of Crossroads Discover Istanbul, the historical, political, and cultural heart of Turkey. Its strategic location between East and West, as well as its rich history, architecture, and culture, make Istanbul a unique location to observe and study globalization and transculturation. The program includes excursions to important sites rich in ancient complexities of cultural contact and transformation.

Jaffa: Near Eastern Languages & Cultures Jaffa Cultur al Heritage Project Be part of the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project, a joint project of UCLA and the Israel Antiquities Authority. Students will travel to its archaeological field school in Old Jaffa on the south side of Tel Aviv. The program includes on-site excavations and lectures, as well as training in archaeological field methods, record keeping, preservation, artifact analysis, and data management.
