Welcome This summer is your opportunity to have an exclusive collegiate experience at the University of California, Irvine, one of the nation’s top research universities and ranked the best young university in America. Through the UCI High School Summer Scholar Program, you will preview what your first year of college will entail. The program is ideal for students who wish to experience the rigor of university curriculum, immerse themselves in campus life, and explore some of the university’s different disciplines and resources. You may enroll in one UCI credit course and attend classes with other UCI undergraduate students.

The seminar-style cohort will help you develop strategies for managing the unique demands of college. It will allow you to learn how research experience can boost your academic career and meet prominent faculty who will share their innovative research. You will also take part in a college application workshop with UCI Admissions. As you make friends, our undergraduate student mentors will introduce interactive social and academic activities.

Why UCI • UC Irvine ranks first in the U.S. and fourth in the world in a Times Higher Education analysis of the best universities under age 50. • First public university in Nobel Prize history to have professors win in two fields during the same year (1995): Frederick Reines in physics and F. Sherwood Rowland in chemistry. • Consistently recognized for its superior academic programs and major research accomplishments, UC Irvine is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the 14th best public university and among the top 50 universities nationally. • UC Irvine placed first in Sierra magazine’s ranking of the country’s “Coolest Schools,” making it the fifth year the university has been included among the top 10 greenest campuses.

The Program & Co-curricular Learning THE PROGRAM M/W 3-5pm or T/TH 3-5pm

College learning encompasses more than just the knowledge you acquire with your UCI credit course. An important component of your college experience is the co-curricular learning. Students will meet in a seminar-style to learn about university research, student life, and collegiate skills. The INSIDE UCI Series, collegiate life workshops, and social activities are designed to give you an understanding of the opportunities, resources and experiences you will encounter as a college student, and introduce you to other Summer Scholars. • This Cohort Experience will allow you to be part of an integrated community of high school students and to learn as a member of a peer group, in which active contribution to the classroom encourages knowledge and success. The classroom experience will be a supportive environment where you will develop friendships which promote reflection and personal exploration. With support from faculty, staff and student mentors, you will work as part of a large group and smaller teams, bringing insight and practical application to the classroom curriculum. • The INSIDE UCI Series is a key part of UCI Summer Session. Presentations by prominent UCI research faculty will give you a “front row seat” to their diverse academic paths and new research developments at UCI. Research is a valuable piece of an undergraduate education because it helps students develop important skills and shows them ways to overcome complicated challenges. You will have the unique opportunity to ask our faculty about their academic journeys, how they became interested in research, and why they do what they do. • The Collegiate Life Workshops are designed to give you an overview of the opportunities and experiences you will encounter as a college student. Highlights from past summers include College Application Workshop with the UCI Office of Admissions, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program Panel, Student Sport Panel featuring the Anteater Quidditch Club among others, Olive Tree Initiative, Engineers without Borders, 3D Printing, and entrepreneurial activities.
