Southern California is a major tourist destination with amazing arts, culture, and adventure all within short distances of each other. Irvine has a domestic airport and trains so you can travel anywhere in California or the U.S. relatively quickly.

• Hit the sandy and friendly beaches of Huntington, Newport, and Laguna for sunbathing or a surf lesson.

3 Student Housing The Residence Halls or “houses” in Arroyo Vista are a short walk from main campus and are surrounded by conveniences such as a shopping center and the Anteater Recreation Center, UC Irvine’s state-of-art fitness facilities. Each house is fully furnished and equipped with a central bathroom on each floor, common lounges and kitchens, laundry room, and a computing center. All rooms are dual occupancy and equipped with an internet connection so students can continue to study or connect with family and friends in the comfort of their room. Each house will have a live-in Residential Advisor to provide assistance and social programming.

By living on campus, you will be part of our multicultural community and will meet, study, and develop friendships with other students. On-campus housing is available for all registered domestic and international Summer Session students.

Each house will have cooking supplies and utensils, so you can make the most of your money by preparing meals. There are also plenty of on-campus dining options including all-you-can-eat dining halls and convenient grab-and-go eateries that take cash and credit.

Student Support

Even before you arrive, you have access to a variety of student services to help your academic, personal, and social needs. Our staff will work with you during the enrollment process and will prepare you for your arrival to UC Irvine.

Once on campus, you will have access to a wide range of resources including but not limited to Immigration Services, the Student Health Center, Disability Services, and the Counseling Center.

Arroyo Vista Housing are a short walk to classes and the Univesity Center.

No matter how you decide to explore California with your new friends, you are guaranteed to make some great memories. Our staff will help coordinate some of these memories throughout

When you first arrive, Summer Session staff and mentors will greet you at the airport and take you to your residence halls. There, mentors will help you check-in, and you will receive your keys and settle in. You will be able to meet your new housemates and will have some time to relax before our group dinner. On Sunday, we have a mandatory orientation. You may be a little jetlagged, but our staff and mentors will be there to assist you. During orientation, you will learn about academic expectations and resources, obtain your student IDs, activate your student accounts, and understand safety and American culture. Immigration advisors will check-in students’ arrivals. You will also get to know all of the other international students in the program. Afterwards, you have the option of going shopping with us or going to the beach for some California sun!

4 Campus Life A successful summer requires a balance of academic and social life. In between classes and studying, students can participate in a variety of unique Summer Session events and activities or can explore what California has to offer with their new friends.

With more than 600 student clubs and organizations, students can readily find friends who share their interests, whether academic, environmental, multicultural, social or athletic. Cutting-edge artists, internationally renowned speakers, cultural nights, and student-lead campus events are opportunities for students to engage with UC Irvine during the summer.

The Student Center is where you will find most of the student body in between classes, eating, shopping at The Hill, or hanging out at the ZotZone or the Anthill Pub and Grille. In addition, you will find banks, discounted tickets to attractions, and study space. You can take a short walk across the bridge to University Town Center for a variety of dining, grocery stores, and a movie theatre.

With so much to do and explore, it can be hard to decide what to do. Each week Summer Session will send e-mails, post on Facebook, and update our blog with event reminders and program news.

The Anteater U Summer Festivals During the summer, the campus is alive with outdoor activities! The 19-acre botanical Aldrich Park and Student Center are the center of our summer festivals, where all students are encouraged to perform and get involved. The Summer Games, which takes place during Session I, is a great opportunity to learn about different student organizations. The Sunset Festival, marking the

Trips Throughout each session, our office will organize a variety of cost-effective and time-efficient trips designed to help you experience California culture.

During the first week, you will have the ability to sign-up and pay for activities including our 4-day weekend trips to Las Vegas and then to San Francisco, day trips to Los Angeles and San Diego, and amusement parks. Of course, there will be an opportunity to learn how to surf and hit the waves at our lively beaches.

Our office will also offer Free Friday excursions to local hot spots including Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Island, and The Spectrum for shopping. Space is limited to students who sign up at the beginning of each week.

We’re here for you!

In addition to the staff that helps you enroll into the program and provide support throughout your stay at UCI, the International Student Mentor Program organizes student activities, events, and study sessions. You will enjoy their pool parties, game nights, and barbeques. The Mentors are undergraduate students of different backgrounds, ages, and majors who are interested in meeting international students and helping with cultural adjustments. Mentors may even be in the same classes as students.

Every week, Mentors will host English Conversation Hours, where students can practice English casually with the Mentors and receive assistance with homework.

Eligibility

Visa Support

To enroll, you must meet the following requirements.

International (non-immigrant) students coming from abroad are required to have valid visas to enter the U.S. Most international students enrolling in Summer Session will obtain an F-1 Student Visa. UCI Summer Session, in collaboration with UCI Extension, will issue appropriate documentation necessary to obtain an F-1 Student Visa.

Once you have arrived, immigration advisors will be available to assist with travel, medical issues, or any questions regarding your legal status in the U.S.

• A complete Summer Session enrollment application • Enroll in 6-units or more (maximum of 10 per session) in order to obtain an F-1 Student Visa.

• Health Insurance (Insurance Waiver Form or Purchase UCI insurance) All students are required to carry health insurance during the entire duration of the program. When living abroad, you never know when you will need to see a doctor or when an emergency may happen. It can be overwhelming to handle any health-related issues in a new country, which is why we make sure students are prepared. Students can purchase UCI insurance directly from Summer Session for $260 for an entire session. Alternatively, students can provide proof of private insurance and complete a waiver with their application.

Studying at UCI Why Study at UCI? Summer Session offers over 800 courses in 70 academic disciplines. Students will take courses led by world renowned faculty amongst domestic UCI undergraduates.

As a visiting student, you have the option to choose courses that will help you fulfill degree requirements at your home university or courses just for interest. This is your summer to grow academically. Students are encouraged to meet with professors and strike up a conversation – some students have been offered opportunities to assist in research on campus. Furthermore, there are plenty of academic resources available on campus to help you with your learning needs such as peer tutors, 5 expansive research libraries, and 6 computer labs with up to 90 PCs and Macs.

The Academics After completing your courses, you can obtain an official UCI transcript as proof of your academic participation. This transcript can be added to your CV or used for future applications to graduate schools in the U.S. or internationally.

9 What Can I Study?

Academic success depends on selecting courses that meet your learning and interests. There are no prerequisite requirements for many courses, but we encourage students to have some prior knowledge before enrolling into courses. A full-time course load is 2 fourunit courses (minimum requirement for an F-1 student visa is 6 units). We do not recommend that students take more than 10 units per session. Students are encouraged to speak to an academic advisor at their home university to receive assistance in selecting transferable courses before starting Summer Session. View all of the courses online on our website with detailed course descriptions.

Students can choose how to be evaluated in their courses, but student will generally take courses for a letter grade in order to transfer course credit across international institutions. Since UCI is on an academic quarter system, you may be required to convert the units to semester units to receive credit.
