High School: Since We’re Stuck Here, We Might as Well Talk About It

Not All Glitter and Glitz: High School Reality Compared to Pop Culture Version By Dorian Uson Features Editor High school is often portrayed differently in movies and online than it really is in real life. In Ă€FWLRQDO VWRULHV KLJK VFKRRO VWXdents have completely different lifestyles, ones that are usually fantastical, adventurous and that aren’t realistic at all. It’s a common misconception that when you get to high school, your life will change in the most dramatic ways. While this is somewhat true, it is very different from how the media likes to portray it. Junior Kayla Bunch said, “The way high school is portrayed in movies is completely different than how it really is. It’s very ironic if you think about it.â€?

Homeroom is in almost every movie, book or story about high school. Everyone always has homeroom with their best friends or the person they are interested in, and this is simply not a thing in real life. UC High does have a homeroom, but it isn’t a special separate class. It’s just whatever one’s fourth period is, and half the time, it’s not even a fun class. Often, high school is described as a place where the popular and unpopular are constantly at odds and battling over control of the school. There are those people that everyone knows, but they aren’t the stereotypical popular people you see in movies. UC Boys Baseball Trains to Win CIF By Bilal Mohamed Staff Writer The UC High Boys Baseball Team is starting its season in March, and the team members are planning to pitch in their best efforts this year and win CIF, according to Captain Ken Waldichuk. According to Coach Richard Frink, last season, the team made it to the playoffs and lost to Scripps Ranch High in the fourth round, which exceeded his expectations. The team aims to perform even better this year. According to Frink, this is his second year coaching the team, and he has made adjustments for this season that will help the team be successful. “The kids have had me for one year. They understand my philosophy, and we want to improve. With the hard work they put in, I believe they can accomplish that, Frink said. According to Frink, the captains of the team this season are Seniors Grant Ruthenberg, Tristan Reidy, Matt Martinson and Waldichuk. Frink expects the team to achieve great success this season, because they have

many returning starters from the previous year, as well as their top pitcher, Waldichuk, who was recruited (and has committed) to play at St. Mary’s College. “We lost a few key contributors [from ODVW \HDU@ EXW ZH GHĂ€QLWHO\ KDYH SOD\HUV who can replace what those players did last season,â€? The Gulls are Back in Town By Alison White Staff Writer The atmosphere was electric as the sound of pucks ricocheting off the boards echoed through Valley View Casino Center. San Diego’s very own hockey team is back in business and ready to rock the house. The San Diego Gulls are an American Hockey League (AHL) team that was formed in 2015 in San Diego. That last part, however, is not technically true. The Gulls are not a new name in San Diego households; they originally started here in 1966 as part of the Western Hockey League (WHL) until 1974. The next wave of Gulls migrated down through San Diego from 1990 to 1995 with the International Hockey League (IHL), but then switched to the West Coast Hockey League until 2006 (GXFNV QKO FRP). But now, they’re back with new management in the form of the National Hockey League (NHL) team the Anaheim Ducks (GXFNV QKO FRP). The Gulls Equipment Technician Alf 7HMDGD VDLG ´7KHLU Ă€UVW VHDVRQ EDFN KDV been great.â€? There was a bit of speculation on how the new hockey team would be received by San Diegans. “The games are a lot bigger than what we expected,â€? said Tejada. “We average around 8,800 to 9,000 [spectators] per game, so we’re second in the league for total attendance.â€? Senior Hirari Watanabe explained, “Usually, people in San Diego would

have to make the trip up to Los Angeles or Anaheim to watch hockey, but now, they can stay in town and still feel connected to WKH 1+/ >WKURXJK WKH 'XFNV DIĂ€OLDWLRQ@ Âľ Now, what’s so different between the old and new Gulls? According to Tejada, the IHL was mainly for veterans who were retired from the NHL, but still wanted to play, so the IHL games were a bit slower paced than the AHL games now. The current AHL Gulls team consists mostly of Ducks draft picks who are preparing for the NHL. Although people might automatically associate other sports like baseball or soccer when they think of Southern California, the hockey fan base is increasingly large, thanks to big teams like the Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings. “We have plenty of transplants from other cities on the east coast who are like, ‘Hey, we can watch hockey here, too,’ and we have around seven ice rinks in San Diego County alone, whereas some towns in Canada only have one. That is huge,â€? said Tejada. Hockey’s popularity can also be attributed to NBC contract’s with the NHL. “Now, there’s a hockey game being broadcast almost everyday,â€? said Tejada. “Hockey is thriving in Southern California.â€? 7KH *XOOV KRSH WR Ă€QLVK WKH \HDU RXW ZHOO DQG \RX FDQ Ă€QG DQ\ RI WKHLU KRPH JDPHV at the Valley View Casino Center for some fast-paced excitement.
