Our Vibrant Community When you join the UC Davis Graduate School of Management’s dynamic community, you hit the ground running from Orientation to graduation with a calendar packed with opportunities, many of which you’ll have a hand creating and planning. Here is just a sample of the many events and activities that UC Davis MBA students were involved in last year. 1 Building Networks: Our annual Peer-to-Pier networking event in San Francisco draws hundreds of students, alumni, faculty, recruiters and business leaders. Topics have included thriving in challenging times, building personal and company brands, corporate social responsibility, and innovation and intrapreneurism. 2 A Running Start: Students launch their UC Davis MBA experience with an intensive two-week Orientation. Bonds form quickly as students explore Northern California hotspots, recreation and world-famous destinations like Napa Valley. Highlights include a challenging ropes course that builds teamwork skills.

3 Meet Warren: Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Warren Buffett has hosted approximately 230 UC Davis MBA students at Berkshire Hathaway’s headquarters in Omaha over the past five years. How do you thank a man who has everything? Students have volunteered at several local nonprofit organizations during the trips. 4 New Light on Careers: Alumni open their offices for Shadow Day, offering MBA students career advice and insider insight into their company’s operations, culture and opportunities.

24

3

6

5 Glass Ceiling Unbroken: Our annual “UC Davis Study of California Women Business Leaders” details the presence of women at the very top of the 400 largest publicly held corporations headquartered in the state. The bottom line: The glass ceiling persists as men hold roughly nine out of every 10 top management and board positions. 6 A World of Opportunity: The International Study Trip course opens a window to global business. After a quarter-long study of a region, students take their lessons learned on a two-week tour with site visits and executive meetings. Recent trips included Hungary and the Czech Republic, China, Vietnam, Ecuador and Panama. The spring 2011 journey to Chile and Argentina included a stop at Empresa Portuaria Valparaiso, which operates Chile’s Port of Valparaiso. 7 Igniting Entrepreneurship: UC Davis MBA students networked and learned with their like-minded counterparts from Rice University and Boston University at Ignite 2011, an inspiring three-day forum for aspiring entrepreneurs. Candid “fireside chats” and presentations by veteran entrepreneurs and CEOs were capped with a whirlwind tour of Silicon Valley, including visits to Google, Facebook and storied venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

8 Making a Net Impact: Net Impact uses the power of business to create positive social, environmental and economic change. Our Silver-ranked chapter has been recognized as the Trailblazing Chapter of the Year, the Best Small Chapter of the Year, and among the top four Graduate Chapters worldwide. The chapter hosts high-profile speakers, offers leadership development opportunities, sponsors courses in social entrepreneurship and sustainable business, and joins peers at the annual national Net Impact conference. 9 Giving Back: MBA Challenge for Charity, the largest business school organization of its kind in the world, draws on the talents, energy and philanthropic efforts of students from nine top West Coast business schools. The year-long competition culminates with a weekend of sports and games. The UC Davis chapter supports the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Sacramento and the Northern California Special Olympics.

UC Davis 2012 Daytime MBA Program

9

11

12

10 Leading with Integrity: Believing that integrity is a cornerstone of leadership, students begin their MBA experience with an ethics pledge to “complete my degree with honesty and integrity” and to “hold myself and my classmates to the highest standards of honor from this day forward.” Every Daytime MBA student voluntarily signed the studentinitiated declaration. 11 Taking the Initiative: Our MBA Mayoral Fellows put their management talent to work on special projects and policy initiatives in economic development, green energy, education and the arts for Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. The program is patterned after the White House Fellows Program in Washington, D.C.

Hal Varian, Chief Economist, Google Distinguished Speakers: Top executives, business leaders and internationally influential policymakers bring their insights and expertise to the Graduate School of Management. UC Davis MBA students recently heard from Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, Inc. (pictured); Kevin Cleary, president and COO of Clif Bar & Company; economist Laura Tyson, a presidential advisor and professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business; Sacramento, Calif., Mayor Kevin Johnson and Michelle Rhee, founder and CEO of StudentsFirst; and Art Ciocca, founder and chairman emeritus of The Wine Group.

12 “Sim City of the Business World”: During Orientation, Daytime MBA students team up for The Lam Research Foundation–sponsored Executive Challenge, which throws them into an intense simulation of building a business, making strategic decisions and solving tough problems on a tight timeline.

UC Davis offers the best of both worlds: the resources of an internationally renowned university…and the appeal of a true college town. Davis residents are active in political causes, the arts and community organizations. Much of their attention goes to enhancing the quality of life. With a population of 65,000, the City of Davis has a reputation for environmental awareness, energy conservation, excellent schools, and exceptional parks and recreational programs. More than 50 miles of bicycle and jogging paths link neighborhoods with the campus and with Davis’ vibrant downtown. The region’s temperate climate allows you to enjoy the outdoors all year long. Only 15 minutes away is downtown Sacramento, one of America’s most diverse cities and the capital of California— where policy and regulations decisions that impact the world’s eighth-largest economy are made. You have access to a large metropolitan area with a thriving business community and growing green technology sector that also offers a wide range of social and recreational activities. The urban diversity of San Francisco, Silicon Valley’s innovation hub, Napa Valley’s internationally famous wine country and Lake Tahoe’s challenging ski slopes are just a short drive away.

Costs and Financial Aid E D U C AT I O N A L COS T S The Graduate Financial Aid Office publishes a student budget based on the average costs for a graduate student during the nine-month academic year. As provided by the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, you are entitled to request and receive a copy of the Security Report for the UC Davis campus. The report includes statistics for the past three years concerning crimes and incidents reported to campus security authorities (whether the crime occurred on campus, in off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the university, or on public property adjacent to campus). The report also provides campus policies and practices concerning security—how to report sexual assault and other crimes, crime prevention efforts, policies/laws governing alcohol and drugs, victims’ assistance programs, student discipline, campus resources and other matters. You may obtain this report online at: http://police.ucdavis.edu/clery.htm. To obtain a printed copy, please submit a request by e-mail to lstemple@ucdavis.edu or in writing to the UC Davis Information Practices Officer, Offices of the Chancellor and Provost, University of California, Davis, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616. Please put a subject heading on the e-mail, or label the outside of the envelope, as “Information Request for Campus Security Report.” Because the faculty and administration of the UC Davis Graduate School of Management are continually reviewing the MBA program to give its students the best possible educational experience, the School and the UC Regents reserve the right to change at any time any of its provisions, statements, policies, curricula, procedures, regulations or fees. The information in this brochure has been prepared with the best data available as of August 2011.
