Our Vibrant Community When you join the UC Davis Graduate School of Management’s dynamic community, you hit the ground running from Orientation to graduation with a calendar packed with opportunities, many of which you’ll have a hand creating and planning. Here is just a sample of the many events and activities that UC Davis MBA students were involved in last year. 1 Water for Change: A business plan to wean consumers from plastic-bottled water and toward an ecologically responsible high-quality water and reusable bottle vending machine landed a team of Bay Area Working Professional MBA students in the regional finals of Hult International Business School’s second annual Global Case Challenge. Water for Change’s plan was among 130 selected from more than 1,000 applications from the world’s top universities.

3

2 Building Networks: Our annual Peer-to-Pier networking event in San Francisco draws hundreds of students, alumni, faculty, recruiters and business leaders. Topics have included thriving in challenging times, building personal and company brands, corporate social responsibility, and innovation and intrapreneurism. 3 Meet Warren: Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Warren Buffett has hosted approximately 230 UC Davis MBA students at Berkshire Hathaway’s headquarters in Omaha over the past five years. How do you thank a man who has everything? Students have volunteered at several local nonprofit organizations during the trips. 20

4 MBA Portfolio Challenge: Students have opportunities to collaborate in global, national and regional business and investment competitions. A team of Working Professional MBA students recently won the Chartered Financial Analysts Society of San Francisco’s Bay Area MBA Portfolio Challenge, outperforming more than 20 business school teams that spent three months trading and tracking a virtual $1-million stock investment. While most portfolios worldwide suffered record losses, the UC Davis team grew theirs by 363 percent to $4.6 million, achieving the winning reward-to-risk ratio. 5 Big Bang! Business Plan Competition: Launched in 2000 by a team of Working Professional MBA students, UC Davis’ annual business plan competition provides a forum for developing and testing business visions. The Bay Area Working Professional MBA student team Nomad Technologies took second place in the 2010 Big Bang! with a UC Davis–patented nanotechnology-based design to increase computer hard drive capacity by more than 800 percent. Nomad was later named one of 16 finalists—out of several thousand entrants—in Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Cisco System’s Global Business Plan Competition. They’ve since incorporated as Nanodyne Inc., and have an exclusive licensing agreement with UC Davis. UC Davis Graduate School of Management

UC Davis is noted globally for its expertise in the converging issues of food, water, health, society, energy and the environment. Since the university’s founding more than 100 years ago, faculty and students have worked across disciplines to generate new discoveries. Today this collaborative culture flourishes, fostering an academic environment dedicated to solving the world’s most critical challenges.

Founded in 1905 32,290 students More than 205,700 alumni worldwide 88 graduate programs 5,300 acres (largest UC campus) UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento is one of the nation’s leading teaching and research hospitals

6 Distinguished Speakers: Top executives, business leaders and internationally influential policymakers bring their insights and expertise to the Graduate School of Management. UC Davis MBA students recently heard from Kevin Cleary, president and COO of Clif Bar & Company (pictured); Hal Varian, chief economist at Google, Inc.; economist Laura Tyson, a presidential advisor and professor at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business; and Art Ciocca, founder and chairman emeritus of The Wine Group. 7 Leading with Integrity: Believing that integrity is a cornerstone of leadership, students begin their MBA experience with an ethics pledge to “complete my degree with honesty and integrity” and to “hold myself and my classmates to the highest standards of honor from this day forward.” Every Working Professional MBA student voluntarily signed the student-initiated declaration. 8 A World of Opportunity: The International Study Trip course opens a window to global business. After a quarter-long study of a region, students take their lessons learned on a two-week tour with site visits and executive meetings. The spring 2011 journey to Chile and Argentina included a stop at Empresa Portuaria Valparaiso, which operates Chile’s Port of Valparaiso.

9 Making a Net Impact: Net Impact uses the power of business to create positive social, environmental and economic change. Our GSM Professional chapter provides Working Professional MBA students and alumni with professional development and community engagement opportunities centered on green tech and social entrepreneurship. Launched in 2008, the chapter earned a Silver ranking from the national Net Impact organization for three consecutive years for its activities. Members also collaborate with the School’s trailblazing Daytime MBA chapter. 10 Entrepreneurship Opportunities: Professor Andrew Hargadon leads the Center for Entrepreneurship’s Business Development programs and academies, which bring MBA students and investors together with scientists and engineers from around the world to develop the commercial potential of their research breakthroughs. They emerge having built businesses from the ground up—and developed lasting relationships with faculty, their peers and the entrepreneurial community both on and off the campus.

UC Davis Cleary Act Compliance Notice Availability of the UC Davis Campus Security Report As provided by the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, you are entitled to request and receive a copy of the Security Report for the UC Davis campus. The report includes statistics for the past three years concerning crimes and incidents reported to campus security authorities (whether the crime occurred on campus, in off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the university, or on public property adjacent to campus). The report also provides campus policies and practices concerning security—how to report sexual assault and other crimes, crime prevention efforts, policies/laws governing alcohol and drugs, victims’ assistance programs, student discipline, campus resources and other matters. You may obtain this report online at: http://police.ucdavis.edu/clery.htm. To obtain a printed copy, please submit a request by e-mail to lstemple@ucdavis.edu or in writing to the UC Davis Information Practices Officer, Offices of the Chancellor and Provost, University of California, Davis, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616. Please put a subject heading on the e-mail, or label the outside of the envelope, as “Information Request for Campus Security Report.” Because the faculty and administration of the UC Davis Graduate School of Management are continually reviewing the MBA program to give its students the best possible educational experience, the School and the UC Regents reserve the right to change at any time any of its provisions, statements, policies, curricula, procedures, regulations or fees.
