Tickets – In person: 15-minute parking spaces are marked and available on Coventry Loop, in front of the Center. Cash and select credit cards are accepted at the Box Office window.

You may fax your order 24 hours a day, call (716) 645-2787 during Box Office hours to request a fax form.

By Mail: Mail order forms are available through the Box Office.

Personal checks are accepted for mail orders only. Do not send cash.

At Ticketfly.com: Tickets are available at Ticketfly.com, or charge by phone at 1-877-987-6487. The Center for the Arts maintains a no-refund policy.

Will Call: The Box Office (Will Call/Paid/ Reservations) opens one hour before performances. Early ticket pickup for paid reservations is permitted after 4 p.m. on the day of the performance. Proper identification (including credit card) is required for all prepaid tickets.

Late Arrivals: Late arrivals will not be seated until a suitable break in the performance, or at the discretion of the ushers, and may not be seated in the exact seating locations until intermission.

Parking: Parking is free after 3 p.m. and on weekends. Parking is available in Slee Lot A and B, Baird Lot A and Jacob’s Lots B and C and in the Arena Lot behind Alumni Arena.

Parking for persons with disabilities is available at various locations, including spaces adjacent to Slee Hall and several spaces in Baird Lot B. Additional spaces are reserved adjacent to Alumni Arena and in the Arena Lot. Persons in wheelchairs have curb accessibility on Coventry Circle in front of the Center For The Arts.

Group Sales: Group sale discounts are available for most performances. Please call (716) 645-6253 for more information.

Rules/Restrictions: All cameras and recording devices are prohibited. Please check cellular phones and pagers at the coat check and leave your seat location with the attendant. Out of respect to the performers and audience members, please do not allow these services to sound off. We would also greatly appreciate having wristwatch alarms turned off.

Emergencies: In case of emergency, contact the House Manager or nearest usher.

Fire Notice: Please take a moment to locate the nearest emergency exit. In the event of a fire or other emergency, remain calm and listen for directions via our public address system.

Smoking : UB’s smoke-free policy is in effect as of Aug. 1, with smoking prohibited in buildings and on the grounds – including green spaces –on the university’s three campuses.

Food and Beverages: Food and beverages are not allowed in the theaters proper.

Concessions: Refreshments are available in the Atrium before and during selected performances. This service is provided at bars located outside the entrances to the main floor and balcony lounge.

Coat Check: Coat check service is available in the center of the lobby.

Patrons with Disabilities: The Center for the Arts is accessible to people using wheelchairs or with restricted mobility. Tickets for wheelchair locations must be requested at the time of the ticket purchase. It is suggested that you arrive at the Center at least a half-hour prior to show time. There is no elevator to the balcony.

Assistive Listening Devices are available free to audience members. These devices can be checked out at the coat check before performances.

Discounts/Coupons: Discounts may be available for some performances. Please direct your inquiries for specific performances to the box Office. Student discounts are available for most performances with valid student identification. Visit the CFA website for more information www.ubcfa.org.

Lost and Found: Any items found at the Center will be held at the coat check during performances and at the Center Administrative offices (Room 103) during the day. The Center assumes no responsibility for damage caused by the loss of the item. Items not claimed within five days will be turned over to University Police.

Restrooms: Restrooms are located at the main floor level in the Atrium. Patrons using wheelchairs are accommodated with accessibility on all restroom, as well as accessible drinking fountains, in the Atrium. Additional restrooms are available in the lower level of the Center and the balcony lounge of the Mainstage.

Children: Children will form the audiences of tomorrow, so we enjoy having them in the Center today. Parents should exercise their discretion in deciding what events their children will enjoy (or call our Box Office for Program suggestions). Please remember, regardless of age, everyone attending an event must have a ticket.

Children (Infants): We encourage parents to prepare their children for the live theater experience by explaining basic audience etiquette to them. Parents of children talking, crying or moving around in a manner that is distracting to other patrons may be asked to move with their children to another location or to leave the theatre. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Greetings from the University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for the Arts! As home to the Departments of Theatre and Dance, Music, Art, and Media Study, the College prepares future performers, artists, designers, and technicians to thrive. Students come to us from every corner of the globe. They contribute their unique creative talents to Buffalo while they are here, and many choose to stay and build careers in our community. Buffalo has long been a champion of artistic innovation. We thank all of our students for their passion, talent, and drive.

I’m proud to say that, once again, the CFA will be offering high-quality, highenergy productions by our talented student performers, as well as professional and national touring acts, nearly every week of the year. Zodiaque Dance Company (ZDC) is gathering momentum for Celebration 45. With anticipation building for the landmark anniversary, we pause to admire where we are on this path of creative exploration and development. UB Dance is experiencing a growth spurt and the excitement is tangible. This year we have welcomed our first cohort of MFA Dance students and three new Dance Faculty members, all while simultaneously preparing for a celebration of ZDC – an institution in the Department of Theatre & Dance. The vision of ZDC expands with the creative contributions of each choreographer. I acknowledge the following choreographers for their inspired additions to the 44th Spring Zodiaque Concert: new dance faculty Trebien Pollard and Jenna Del Monte; our first UB Dance MFA candidate choreographer Naila Ansari Woods, and senior undergraduate Zodiaque company members Rachel Latke and Jess Levin. Local choreographers Terri Filips Vaughan and N’Jelle Gage Thorne, and New York City guest artists Bryn Cohn and Baira duo Bryan Strimpel Baria and Shaina Branfman Baira have all broadened the landscape of innovation and versatility. I gratefully acknowledge all of the technical and professional support that made this concert possible.

Specifically, the talents of lighting designer Gina Boccolucci (Senior Design Technology Major) have heightened the entire creative environment. I express thanks for the generosity of alumni donors and friends of dance, like Carol Greiner, David and Cindy Cominski, Lucille and Jack Yellen, and especially to Dr. Sebastian and Marilyn Ciancio for the recent establishment of the Marilyn Bonfiglio-Ciancio Zodiaque Award. Set to music of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, A Dance in the Garden of Mirth was designed to capture the vibrancy and joy present in the music and gatherings associated with the time period. With Garden of Mirth, Welch tells the story of a particular type of music and the way that music can affect people.

The tradition of instrumental music before the thirteenth century is poorly documented. It fell outside of the traditions of music theorists who were mainly affiliated with church music, and the poet troubadours and trouvères, whose ability to improvise musical accompaniments was legendary. Few examples of purely instrumental music exist because the tradition was an aural one, passed between itinerant musicians hired for festive occasions and ceremonies.

The music used for A Dance in the Garden of Mirth comes from two rare collections that include various instrumental sketches along with collections of vocal music. They are the thirteenth century French Manuscrit du Roi and a fourteenth century Italian collection. Their performance is a matter of skillful invention using reproductions of ancient instruments since the music does not indicate specific instrumentation.

Artistic Profiles ILYA KOZADAYEV, Choreographer, Molto Espressivo Ilya Kozadayev was born into a family of professional ballet dancers in St. Petersburg, Russia. He received dance training from his parents Sergey Kozadayev and Zhanna Dubrovskaya. He continued his training at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg and at the School of American Ballet in New York City. He then graduated from the John Cranko Ballet Academy in Stuttgart, Germany where he studied exclusively

with the great Peter Pestov. Mr. Kozadayev has danced with several prestigious ballet companies in the United States and has performed works by numerous leading and legendary choreographers. Mr. Kozadayev was a soloist for ten seasons with the Houston Ballet. Mr. Kozadayev has toured nationally and internationally and has performed in the US, Canada, Austria, Germany, France, Spain and Japan. Mr. Kozadayev was the winner of the New York International Ballet Competition, and was an MFA choreography candidate at Jacksonville University in Florida. In 2013, Mr. Kozadayev became an Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Dance.

Artistic Staff STANTON WELCH AM, Artistic Director, Houston Ballet In July 2003, Australian Stanton Welch assumed leadership of Houston Ballet, America’s fifth largest classical ballet company. Since he took the helm of the company, Mr. Welch has revitalized Houston Ballet, bringing in new dancers, commissioning new works, and attracting a top-flight artistic staff. Mr. Welch has created works for such prestigious international companies as Houston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, The Australian Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet. Mr. Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones, O.B.E., and Garth Welch, AM, two of Australia’s most gifted dancers of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1989 he was engaged as a dancer with The Australian Ballet, where he rose to the rank of leading soloist, performing various principal roles. He has also worked with internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Ji?í Kylían, Nacho Duato, and Maurice Béjart. In 1995, Mr. Welch was named resident choreographer of The Australian Ballet. For Houston Ballet, he has choreographed more than twenty works including a new full-length narrative

ballet Marie (2009), inspired by the life of the legendary Marie Antoinette and spectacular staging of Swan Lake (2006), and La Bayadère (2010).

VICKI ATTARD, Academy Director, Houston Ballet Academy Vicki Attard joined The Australian Ballet in 1985 and rose to the rank of Principal Artiste in 1993.

She performed all principal roles and many and varied leading roles during her 15 year career with the Australian Ballet. Ms. Attard created the role of Cio-Cio San in the world premiere of Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly in 1995, the same year she won the James & Diana Ramsay Scholarship which enabled her to study in Copenhagen, London and Netherlands. Highlights of Vicki’s career included Kitri on the opening night of the Washington season, Manon in Tokyo and the opening and all performances of Cio-Cio San in Madame Butterfly for the New York season. Early 2001 Vicki assisted Stanton Welch in re-staging Madame Butterfly with The National Ballet of Canada, Atlanta Ballet, Boston Ballet and Houston Ballet in 2002. Vicki has produced unique pointe programs, entitled ‘My Pointe’ and ‘My Beginner Pointe’.

CLAUDIO MUÑOZ, Ballet Master, Houston Ballet II/ Houston Ballet Teacher and Coach Claudio Muñoz joined Houston Ballet’s Academy in 1999. Mr. Muñoz trained with a variety of choreographers, including John Cranko, George Balanchine, Ben Stevenson, and Ronald Hynd. During his career as a dancer, he filled principal roles in Peru, Uruguay, Argentina, and New York. In 1989 he founded the Chamber Ballet of Santiago. Mr. Muñoz has taught classes and seminars in Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, and the United States. He has worked as an instructor for the Ballet Nacional de Chile, Ballet de Santiago, and Ballet Nacional de Peru. The

dancers Mr. Muñoz has coached have won the silver medal at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson (1990), third place in the Shanghai International Ballet Competition (1995) and first place at the Prix de Lausanne (2010). In 1996, Mr. Muñoz was awarded “Best Teacher” at the Interdance Competition in Asuncion, Paraguay. Mr. Muñoz has staged a ballet for Ben Stevenson at Florida Ballet, and also staged Stanton Welch’s work at Cincinnati Ballet and Tulsa Ballet. Mr. Muñoz also coaches Houston Ballet II students for the Prix de Lausanne and Beijing International Ballet Competition. In 2007 and 2011, he served as a judge for the Youth America Grand Prix competition in Mexico. In 2016 he was awarded the Dance Teacher Award by Dance Teacher Magazine.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE The Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, had a great passion for the transformation of his own works. Likewise, Pedro Almodóvar led the metamorphosis his Oscar nominated,1988 film, Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, into the 2010 Broadway musical, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which he then collaborated on its re-conception for a 2015 production in London’s West End. It is this version of the show that we have the pleasure of presenting to our audiences.

In that spirit, our production is an homage to Pablo Picasso, whose words however sometimes painted a less optimistic portrait of Spanish life during the time shortly before that of our author.

Nosotros, los españoles, es misa por la mañana, corrida por la tarde y burdel por la noche. ¿Qué tienen en común? La tristeza.

For us, the Spanish, it is mass in the morning, bullfights in the afternoon and the brothel at night. What do they have in common? Sadness.

[Pablo Picasso, in André Malraux, La Tête d’obsidienne (Picasso’s Mask), 1974] Pedro Almodóvar’s essay which appears in Lincoln Center Theater Review reflects the spirit of our production and a newer Spain: In 1987, when I wrote the script of Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios, Madrid was a party. Democracy had arrived in our country a decade before, and the most playful, hedonistic side of the Spanish character had exploded (we also have the opposite side – austere, small-minded, tragic and dark – but in those years we forgot about that). I had the good fortune to be young at that time. My films from the ‘80s reflect that explosion of freedom which illuminated everything. You could say that even grief was joyful.
