Tickets – In person: 15-minute parking spaces are marked and available on Coventry Loop, in front of the Center. Cash and select credit cards are accepted at the Box Office window.

You may fax your order 24 hours a day, call (716) 645-2787 during Box Office hours to request a fax form.

By Mail: Mail order forms are available through the Box Office.

Personal checks are accepted for mail orders only. Do not send cash.

At Ticketfly.com: Tickets are available at Ticketfly.com, or charge by phone at 1-877-987-6487. The Center for the Arts maintains a no-refund policy.

Will Call: The Box Office (Will Call/Paid/ Reservations) opens one hour before performances. Early ticket pickup for paid reservations is permitted after 4 p.m. on the day of the performance. Proper identification (including credit card) is required for all prepaid tickets.

Late Arrivals: Late arrivals will not be seated until a suitable break in the performance, or at the discretion of the ushers, and may not be seated in the exact seating locations until intermission.

Parking: Parking is free after 3 p.m. and on weekends. Parking is available in Slee Lot A and B, Baird Lot A and Jacob’s Lots B and C and in the Arena Lot behind Alumni Arena.

Parking for persons with disabilities is available at various locations, including spaces adjacent to Slee Hall and several spaces in Baird Lot B. Additional spaces are reserved adjacent to Alumni Arena and in the Arena Lot. Persons in wheelchairs have curb accessibility on Coventry Circle in front of the Center For The Arts.

Group Sales: Group sale discounts are available for most performances. Please call Karen at (716) 645-6771 for more information.

Rules/Restrictions: All cameras and recording devices are prohibited. Please check cellular phones and pagers at the coat check and leave your seat location with the attendant. Out of respect to the performers and audience members, please do not allow these services to sound off. We would also greatly appreciate having wristwatch alarms turned off.

Emergencies: In case of emergency, contact the House Manager or nearest usher.

Fire Notice: Please take a moment to locate the nearest emergency exit. In the event of a fire or other emergency, remain calm and listen for directions via our public address system.

Smoking : UB’s smoke-free policy is in effect as of Aug. 1, with smoking prohibited in buildings and on the grounds – including green spaces –on the university’s three campuses.

Food and Beverages: Food and beverages are not allowed in the theaters proper.

Concessions: Refreshments are available in the Atrium before and during selected performances. This service is provided at bars located outside the entrances to the main floor and balcony lounge.

Coat Check: Coat check service is available in the center of the lobby.

Patrons with Disabilities: The Center for the Arts is accessible to people using wheelchairs or with restricted mobility. Tickets for wheelchair locations must be requested at the time of the ticket purchase. It is suggested that you arrive at the Center at least a half-hour prior to show time. There is no elevator to the balcony.

Assistive Listening Devices are available free to audience members. These devices can be checked out at the coat check before performances.

Discounts/Coupons: Discounts may be available for some performances. Please direct your inquiries for specific performances to the box Office. Student discounts are available for most performances with valid student identification. Visit the CFA website for more information www.ubcfa.org.

Lost and Found: Any items found at the Center will be held at the coat check during performances and at the Center Administrative offices (Room 103) during the day. The Center assumes no responsibility for damage caused by the loss of the item. Items not claimed within five days will be turned over to University Police.

Restrooms: Restrooms are located at the main floor level in the Atrium. Patrons using wheelchairs are accommodated with accessibility on all restroom, as well as accessible drinking fountains, in the Atrium. Additional restrooms are available in the lower level of the Center and the balcony lounge of the Mainstage.

Children: Children will form the audiences of tomorrow, so we enjoy having them in the Center today. Parents should exercise their discretion in deciding what events their children will enjoy (or call our Box Office for Program suggestions). Please remember, regardless of age, everyone attending an event must have a ticket.

Children (Infants): We encourage parents to prepare their children for the live theater experience by explaining basic audience etiquette to them. Parents of children talking, crying or moving around in a manner that is distracting to other patrons may be asked to move with their children to another location or to leave the theatre. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Greetings from the University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for the Arts!

As this CFA season kicks off, I want to share with you some highlights from the upcoming schedule.

I’m proud to say that, once again, the CFA will be offering high-quality, high-energy productions nearly every week of the year.

This season, two of our dance companies in the M&T Bank Dance Series, the acclaimed international touring company, Lehrer Dance, and the admired Claire Jacob-Zysman & Dancers, will feature UB talent. Both Jon Lehrer (BFA 1994, Theatre and Dance), the founder and director of Lehrer Dance, and Claire Jacob-Zysman (BFA 2006, Theatre and Dance), the founder and director of Claire Jacob-Zysman & Dancers, are UB alumni. Their creativity and drive are extraordinary.

In keeping with the theme, I also strongly encourage you to attend a performance by UB’s acclaimed Zodiaque Dance Company. Both Jon and Claire were members of the company during their time at UB and the group has a reputation for nurturing world-class talent. The Zodiaque series is known for featuring works by faculty and guest artists and showcasing remarkable student performances. This year marks the 44th season for the Zodiaque Dance Company, with shows in both fall and spring.

I also hope you will find time to attend a performance of Green Day’s “American Idiot.”

The two-time Tony Award-winning musical, based on the band’s Grammy Award winning, multiplatinum album, is exhilarating and timely. This musical also features some of our most talented student performers.

The above is only a brief introduction to culturally relevant, quality programming that defines the Center for the Arts. Every time you attend a show at the CFA, you are helping to support the performing arts programs at UB and the future of the arts for all. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) comprises 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today. Led by Wynton Marsalis, Jazz at Lincoln Center Managing and Artistic Director, this remarkably versatile orchestra performs a vast repertoire ranging from original compositions and Jazz at Lincoln Center-commissioned works to rare historic compositions and masterworks by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, and many others. The JLCO has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra since 1988, performing and leading educational events in New York, across the United States, and around the globe. Alongside symphony orchestras, ballet troupes, local students, and an ever-expanding roster of guest artists, the JLCO has toured over 300 cities across six continents. Guest conductors have included Benny Carter, John Lewis, Jimmy

Heath, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Santos, Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Faddis, Robert Sadin, David Berger, Gerald Wilson, and Loren Schoenberg. The JLCO has been voted best Big Band in the annual DownBeat Readers’ Poll for the past four years (2013–2016).

In 2015, Jazz at Lincoln Center announced the launch of Blue Engine Records, a new platform to make its archive of recorded concerts available to jazz audiences everywhere.

The first release from Blue Engine Records, Live in Cuba, was recorded on an historic 2010 trip to Havana by JLCO and was released in October 2015. Big Band Holidays was released in December 2015, The Abyssinian Mass came out in March 2016, and The Music of John Lewis came out in March 2017. Handful of Keys, featuring a group of all-star guest pianists, arrives in September 2017. Wynton Marsalis Wynton Marsalis (Trumpet) is the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and a world-renowned trumpeter and composer. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12, entered The Juilliard School at age 17, and then joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He made his recording debut as a leader in 1982, and has since recorded more than 60 jazz and classical recordings, which have won him nine Grammy Awards. In 1983 he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz Grammys in the same year and repeated this feat in 1984. Marsalis is also an internationally respected teacher and spokesman for music education, and has received honorary doctorates from dozens of U.S. universities and colleges. He has written six books; his most recent are Squeak, Rumble, Whomp!

Whomp! Whomp!, illustrated by Paul Rogers and published by Candlewick Press in 2012, and Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life with Geoffrey C. Ward, published by Random House in

2008. In 1997 Marsalis became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. In 2001 he was appointed Messenger of Peace by Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and he has also been designated cultural ambassador to the United States of America by the U.S. State Department through their CultureConnect program. Marsalis was instrumental in the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center. The event raised more than $3 million for the Higher Ground Relief Fund to benefit the musicians, music industry-related enterprises, and other individuals and entities from the areas in Greater New Orleans who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Marsalis helped lead the effort to construct Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home – Frederick P. Rose Hall – the first education, performance, and broadcast facility devoted to jazz, which opened in October 2004.

Lehrer Dance

Now celebrating their 10th Anniversary Season, Lehrer Dance is proud to be Buffalo’s very own internationally touring professional dance company. Under the direction of Jon Lehrer, the company showcases Jon’s unique choreography and embodies his definitive style. Jon’s extensive background in both the modern and jazz dance idioms fosters choreography that is organic, artistic, accessible and often humorous, reflecting life experience and the human condition.

The Lehrer Dance style is based on three main elements of movement: Circularity, 3-Dimensionality, and Momentum. These combine to create a form best described as “Organically Athletic” - integrating the approach and fluidity of modern dance with the excitement and energy of jazz dance to create an expressive, engrossing style of movement. Lehrer Dance is a “small, enviable team of dynamite Buffalo, N.Y. dancers” (Chicago Tribune) comprised of 8 individuals who bring their own unique skills to the Lehrer Dance vernacular, keeping it fresh and evolving.

Lehrer Dance began in July 2007 and has already received much national and international attention and critical acclaim. Dance Magazine says Lehrer Dance “took the house not so much by storm as by quantum physics”, and Galerie Ortenau in Offenburg, Germany declares, “Dynamic, Powerful, Elegant – Lehrer Dance brings an absolute passion for the dance.” The company tours extensively, bringing their trademark athletic style to audiences worldwide. Lehrer Dance toured to Europe in 2013 and 2016 and will return for a 9-week tour in 2018.

The company was brought to Russia in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. The Russian tours were sponsored by the US State Department in order to, “Bring the best in American modern dance to the people of Russia.”

At home in Buffalo, Lehrer Dance is committed to producing new original works through collaboration and partnership with the areas finest cultural organizations. These projects include works with Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Irish Classical Theatre Company, MusicalFare Theatre, Torn Space Theater, UB Center of the Arts, and many others. Lehrer Dance is very proud to be the professional dance company in partnership with the University at Buffalo Department of Theatre and Dance. This unique collaboration brings together higher education and the professional world of concert dance, with benefits that serve both groups, as the two entities share artistic resources. UB Dance Majors have the opportunity to take classes in the Lehrer Dance technique, and Jon Lehrer sets work on the University’s Zodiaque Dance Company.

Now in their 11th Season, Lehrer Dance is proud to be Buffalo’s very own internationally touring professional dance company.

Under the direction of Jon Lehrer, the company showcases Jon’s unique choreography and embodies his definitive style. Jon’s extensive background in both the modern and jazz dance idioms fosters choreography that is organic, artistic, accessible and often humorous, reflecting life experience and the human condition.

The Lehrer Dance style is based on three main elements of movement: Circularity, 3-Dimensionality, and Momentum. These combine to create a form best described as “Organically Athletic” - integrating the approach and fluidity of modern dance with the excitement and energy of jazz dance to create an expressive, engrossing style of movement. Lehrer Dance is a “small, enviable team of dynamite Buffalo, N.Y. dancers” (Chicago Tribune) comprised of 8 individuals who bring their own unique skills to the Lehrer Dance vernacular, keeping it fresh and evolving.

Lehrer Dance began in July 2007 and has already received much national and international attention and critical acclaim. Dance Magazine says Lehrer Dance “took the house not so much by storm as by quantum physics”, and Galerie Ortenau in Offenburg, Germany declares, “Dynamic, Powerful, Elegant – Lehrer Dance brings an absolute passion for the dance.” The company tours extensively, bringing their trademark athletic style to audiences worldwide. Lehrer Dance

toured to Europe in 2013 and 2016 and will return for a 9-week tour in 2018. The company was brought to Russia in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. The Russian tours were sponsored by the US State Department in order to, “Bring the best in American modern dance to the people of Russia.”

At home in Buffalo, Lehrer Dance is committed to producing new original works through collaboration and partnership with the areas finest cultural organizations. These projects include works with Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Irish Classical Theatre Company, MusicalFare Theatre, Torn Space Theater, UB Center of the Arts, and many others.

Lehrer Dance is very proud to be the professional dance company in partnership with the University at Buffalo Department of Theatre and Dance. This unique collaboration brings together higher education and the professional world of concert dance, with benefits that serve both groups, as the two entities share artistic resources. UB Dance Majors have the opportunity to take classes in the Lehrer Dance technique, and Jon Lehrer sets work on the University’s Zodiaque Dance Company. Lehrer Dance utilizes UB’s rehearsal space at the Center for the Arts during summer months and on academic breaks.

Here, new works are created to be toured all over the world. In addition, an Observership is offered to a UB Dance senior every year affording them the opportunity to learn company repertoire while gaining valuable insight into the professional world of dance.

In 2007, just six months after he started with Lehrer Dance, Immanuel fell ill and went into a coma for six weeks. The doctors, nurses, family, and friends did not know if he would come out of the coma the same, if at all. Eight months later Immanuel was back on stage. Three years later “Taken” was created.

Bios

Jon Lehrer, who was raised in Queens, New York, took his very first dance class at age 19 at the University at Buffalo. On a dare, Jon took a beginning level modern dance class and his life was changed. After only two years of training at UB, Jon was asked to join the university’s Zodiaque Dance Company. In the summer of 1994, Jon received a scholarship to study at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and ultimately received his BFA in Dance from the University at Buffalo.

As a professional, Jon has danced with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Paul Sanasardo, John Passafiume Dancers, in Merv Griffin’s “Funderful” in Atlantic City, NJ, and the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. In May 1997, Jon was hired into Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, and after three years, was promoted to Rehearsal Director and then given the position of Associate Director two years later. During his ten years with Giordano, Jon also became the resident choreographer, creating seven original works on the company that received rave reviews all around the world.

Jon’s choreography has been set on numerous professional and university dance companies around the country, and he teaches master classes throughout the U.S. and around the world. Jon has been on the faculty of Jazz Dance World Congress, Dance Masters of America, Dance Teacher Summer Conference, and Chicago National Association of Dance Masters (CNADM) to name a few. In 2003, Jon had the honor of receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University at Buffalo’s Zodiaque Dance Company for his accomplishments as a dancer and choreographer. Jon was on the Advisory Board of Dance Spirit Magazine, was featured on the November 2007 cover of Dance Teacher Magazine, and has been reviewed and interviewed in Dance Magazine numerous times.. In 2009, Jon was commissioned by CNADM to write their Modern Dance Syllabus, which is utilized by teachers all across the country to properly teach and introduce their students to modern dance. In 2010, Jon was honored with CNADM’s Artistic Achievement Award for his excellence and artistry in concert dance. In 2011, Jon was the featured guest speaker for Convocation at Shenendoah University and, most re-

cently in 2015, Jon was given the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award from University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences.

Jon is also the Dance Curator at Burchfield Penney Art Center, helping to cultivate the professional dance scene in Buffalo, NY.

Kurt Adametz, originally from Northampton, MA, began his dance training at the Hackworth School of Performing Arts.

While studying there, he traveled to Europe twice as a member of the United States Tap and Jazz Teams, and won two gold medals and titles of Junior Male World Tap and Jazz Champion (Slovenia, 2001), and a gold medal and title of Male World Tap Champion (Germany, 2002). Kurt went on to attend Wheaton College near Boston, where he received a BA in Hispanic Studies. During this time, he continued his training by participating in intensives at the North Carolina School of the Arts. Upon graduating in 2008, Kurt accepted a full scholarship to study at the Giordano Dance School in Chicago.

While in Chicago, he went on to dance for one season with Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago II, and as a principal dancer for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Kurt is thrilled to be in his eighth year with Lehrer Dance.

Cristiana Cavallo is from Utica, NY and began dancing at the age of 3. She received her training from local and guest artists at the Dancenter and at Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute School of Dance. Cristiana graduated in 2014 from the University at Buffalo with a BFA in Dance and a BA in Sociology. As a UB student, she was a member of the Zodiaque Dance Company for three years and performed in various Musical Theatre productions, including It Goes Like It Goes: The Music of David Shire and Grease. She has choreographed for many student productions and was the Director of Dancer’s Workshop. She attended numerous summer programs, including NYSSSA , Thodos Dance Chicago Intensive, and Steps Summer Study. During her senior year, Cristiana was chosen for the LehrerDance Observership, allowing her to train with the company and gain valuable insight into the professional world of dance. Cristiana couldn’t be happier to be in her fourth year with Lehrer Dance.

KerryLyn Kercher is from Allentown, PA and began studying dance at the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts in Bethlehem, PA. She attended Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, VA and received her B.F.A. in Dance Performance in 2014, graduating with the Terpsichore Award & the Deans Undergraduate Award. Upon graduation, she performed with Ekilibre Dance Company, Motion X Dance DC, and JChen Projects based in NYC. KerryLyn is very happy to be back in her second season with Lehrer Dance.

Tyler Malone, originally from Long Island, NY, grew up in Mooresville, North Carolina.

He attended a local dance studio, Lake Norman Dance Gallery, under the direction of Nikki Ritchie-Hensley, training there from age 7-18. While still in high school, Tyler performed with Kool and The Gang, under the direction of Chris Judd, as well as in many parades, showcases, flash mobs, and industrials. Tyler graduated from Point Park University in 2014 with a B.F.A. in Dance, concentration in Jazz. While attending Point Park, Tyler performed in multiple shows featuring many choreographers including Ron Tassone, Alan Hineline, Darrel Moultrie, Ron Hutson, Nicolas Petrov and many more.

Tyler is overjoyed to be in his fourth year with Lehrer Dance. Lastly, Tyler would like to thank his friends and family for keeping him motivated and inspired though it all.

Ryan Moguel was born in North Carolina and later moved to Buffalo, New York. He trained with Matthew Clark at Clark Academy of Performing Arts and with him attended the International Dance Organization’s tap competition in Reisa, Germany in 2006 and 2008, winning 1st place on both occasions. Ryan graduated from the University of Arizona in 2013 where he worked with many amazing artists, performing works by Sam Watson, Larry Keigwin, Michael Williams, Doug Nielsen, and George Balanchine. Ryan is happy to be back in his hometown, dancing in his fifth year with Lehrer Dance.

Immanuel Naylor is a native of Maryland, and a 2006 graduate of Elon University in North Carolina. Manny moved to Buffalo, NY in 2007 to become a founding member of Lehrer Dance. Prior to joining LehrerDance, Manny performed as a guest artist in Elon University’s Spring Dance Concert,

Walkerdance’s The Nutcracker in Burlington NC, American Dance Festival’s Acts to Follow and was a founding member of Kearns Dance Project based in North Carolina. Since moving to Buffalo, Manny has performed in Artpark’s productions of Aida (2007) and All Shook Up (2010) in Lewiston, NY and MusicalFare Theatre’s production of American Rhapsody (2010) in Amherst NY. He has also performed in Dancenter North’s production of The Nutcraker as Soldier Doll and Russian at the beautiful Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, IL. Manny is extremely excited to be living in Buffalo and working with such great artistic talents.

Taylor Ramos is a native of Toledo, Ohio.

She began her dance education at Toledo School for the Arts, where she attended both middle school and high school. Additionally, she was a company member with the Toledo Ballet Association, where she cultivated her classical ballet training. She is trained in ballet, modern, and jazz, and has spent time studying with River North Dance Chicago.

Upon graduation, Taylor moved to Dayton, Ohio to begin schooling at Wright State University with a major in Dance. While working under the faculty at Wright State, Taylor was also a member of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s second company.

In addition to performance opportunities with both Wright State and DCDC, Taylor has also done several film projects in both Toledo and Dayton. Taylor is both thankful and thrilled to be in her second season with Lehrer Dance!

Colleen Walsh was born and raised in Buffalo, New York, and began her training at Steppin’ Out Dance Academy under the Direction of Patty Pawlowski at the age of 4, where she currently teaches. In 2010 Colleen received her BFA in Dance from the University at Buffalo. While at UB, she was a member of the Zodiaque Dance Company for three consecutive years, beginning her freshman year in the Zodiaque Studio Dance Ensemble. In her Senior year, Colleen was awarded the first LehrerDance Observership which was established through the partnership with LehrerDance and the University at Buffalo’s Department of Theatre & Dance.

Colleen is tremendously excited to be in her eighth year with the company.
