Both Rhonda and Brian were carving out successful careers in the corporate world when the arrival of their daughter Hanalei catalyzed a dramatic shift in their life’s direction. Determined to never place Hanalei in daycare, Rhonda embarked on a venture into online entrepreneurship while still at GlaxoSmithKline, eventually launching a branding firm that would enable her to retire Brian from his robotics engineering career.
Their venture into real estate seemed like the next step towards securing their dream life. However, the 2008 market crash dealt a devastating blow, erasing their investments and forcing a radical reassessment of their future.
With a one-year-old Hanalei and their worldly possessions sold, the Swans embarked on an odyssey that redefined the concept of home. Over the next 15 years, their quest for a place to call home took them across more than 52 countries and all seven continents, each destination weaving into the rich tapestry of their family’s story. It was a journey of discovery, learning, and profound connections, driven by an unwavering entrepreneurial spirit and a desire for a life unbound by convention.
In 2015, after years of nomadic exploration, the Swans found their sanctuary in Bali, Indonesia, a place that had captured their hearts early in their journey with its world-class surf, vibrant culture, and breathtaking beauty. Bali was more than just a destination; it was where they decided to lay down roots and create something lasting. Thus, the Swan Bingin was born – a fourstory testament to their journey, perched atop Bingin Beach, offering both a personal haven and a commercial hub through Salty Coffee on the ground floor.
The building also features a one-bedroom studio apartment, designed by Hanalei, reflecting the family’s commitment to sustainability and ethical living. The crown jewel of the Swan Bingin is the penthouse, boasting 360° views and serving as the family’s part-time residence and a welcoming retreat for travelers. This space encapsulates the Swans’ philosophy of sharing the beauty of Bali with the world, while also allowing them to continue their travels and exploration.
Their journey underscores the importance of family, the transformative power of travel, and the enduring quest for a place to call home – a quest that has culminated in the creation of the Swan Bingin, a beacon of resilience, community, and the endless pursuit of dreams.
