About Hardware Intel Magazine Hardware Intel is a magazine powered by UAP. It covers current news, events and new products across the UAP Group, including our brands Intelligent Hardware, Locking Systems, Fullex, Firemongery, as well as industry news. Hardware Intel is the place for all your door and window hardware needs, covering topics such as security and fire safety from an individual household to large-scale industrial level, with insight from industry experts.

A Letter from David Jennings Welcome back to Hardware Intel, bringing you the knowledge you need about all things door hardware. This November issue brings us close the end of the year, and what a year it’s been. As we all know, COVID-19 and the international lockdowns have put a major impediment on the usual runnings of the industry (as well as all others), but this hasn’t stopped UAP from pushing forward and making the best of things. Since the start of the lockdowns, we’ve been producing our own PPE to supply to other companies and organisations that need it, spurred by the huge national shortage of supply earlier in the year. We’re now in a position to donate a large quantity of surplus PPE to charities that need it to get going again after the current second lockdown lifts in December, and we have found several charities and schools local to Greater Manchester that will be receiving donations from us. UAP will always be trying to give back to the community as we are luckily in a position to do so. As a vaccine draws nearer and Winter begins, we’re grateful that we’ve been able to carry on working as usual throughout this second lockdown with the help of our new COVID testing strategy, which is keeping us in the know about the health of our employees. Enjoy this final edition of Hardware Intel for 2020, and have a safe Winter. Thank you for reading.

UAP STARTS COVID TESTING STAFF ON-SITE UAP are taking a strong stance against the second wave of COVID-19 and bringing in a new testing strategy at our site in Whitefield, Manchester. We’re working with BioGrad Laboratories who are providing on-site testing and will soon be bringing in antibody tests for us too. The tests provide us with next-day results so any positive results will be known almost immediately. The first round of testing began on Friday 8th of November and will continue every two weeks until the Christmas holidays. Negative tests or post-recovery clearance from the NHS will be mandatory for those who wish to visit the company offices and warehouses for work, though home-working is still in place for those who can work remotely. 1

UAP are providing any employee who tests positive and needs to isolate at home with their full wage to support all employees. We will be investigating any positive tests to contact trace to prevent COVID from spreading further across the company. We’re also encouraging UAP employees to bring their household members with them for group testing, which is all paid for by CEO of UAP David Jennings. Following the testing on Friday, we have found a small number of positive cases among our staff. These staff members are currently self-isolating and receiving their full wage during their time away from work. We wish them a speedy recovery, and they have the full support of UAP. Fortunately, our warehouse is 100% COVID free, so operations have not been affected, and products sent from UAP are completely safe.

UAP: IT ALL STARTED WITH A DOOR KNOCKER EXPLORE OUR DOOR KNOCKER RANGE A decorative ornamental door knocker can make a huge difference to the overall appearance of an entrance door, adding substantial value onto a property.

The first UAP door knocker

UAP door knockers are available with highly secure bolt-through fixings or the Patented hidden fix technology (for the Victorian Urn style only), both of which are ideal for those looking for something cost effective, durable and with extremely easy installation - the hidden fix door knockers are applied using an adhesive.

In 1996, UAP began with just a basic six inch door knocker. Back in the 90s, most door knockers on the market were solid brass - if a customer wanted a custom coloured knocker, they would have to get them powder coated locally, and door viewer holes needed to be drilled at an engineering company. This was very time consuming, expensive, and the quality was often poor.

We offer a vast range of door knocker styles which can suit traditional and modern build styles. These include Lion’s Head knockers, ideal for all door rose centres or unglazed doors and made from solid brass, available in four different styles. Our Ponytail knockers fit an Art Deco contemporary style, perfect for modern homes. Doctor knockers are a timeless entryway accessory, traditionally associated with identifying a doctor’s door. CEO David Jennings found a manufacturer Scroll knockers add a Georgian or in India and started to import ready-finished Victorian style, and Oval knockers create door knockers in four different colours, a period style element but can also suit both solid and drilled to take a door viewer. contemporary properties due to their minimalist design. This was revolutionary for its time, and today, UAP has a long history of listening CLICK HERE to customers and delivering solutions.

COMMERCIAL RANGE’S FIRE RATED HINGES

The new commercial range brochure from Intelligent Hardware includes a new set of fire-rated hinges, rated at BS EN 1935 Grade 13 and tested to Certifire FD30 and FD60. They’re a versatile butt type hinge designed for timber doors and are made to fit either the left or right side of a door. The hinges are available with square and radius corners. They are manufactured from SS201 grade stainless steel and available in colour options Polished Stainless Steel or Satin Stainless Steel. WHY FIRE-RATED HINGES? Though many consider the hinges to be simply what holds the doors in place, they actually play a major role in door security. 9

Fire rated hinges are required on a door for it to be fully certified as a fire door, as it must be fully able to hold back a fire for 30 - 60 minutes without any part of the door melting, catching fire or letting smoke through. Therefore, all parts and materials used in a fire door must be Certfire approved and CE marked where approprite. Fire door hinges must also be able to withstand the weight of the door repeatedly opening and closing, since fire doors are much heavier than regular doors. Fire doors require a minimum of three fire-rated hinges to be properly fire-rated; it’s very important to use the correct number of high-endurance and high quality hinges to avoid preventable danger in emergency situations.

It features an impressive one-hour fire rating, a dual spindle lock, an easily reversible latch as standard, and is supplied complete with a strike plate. It’s even corrosion resistance tested to BS EN 1670 Grade 5 for 480 hours.

HOW IT WORKS The Fire Door Slam Shut Autolock has an actuator unit positioned between the centre case and the top bolt. When the door is closed a trigger in the actuator is depressed by a strike plate fitted to the outer frame which allows the actuator to drive the top and bottom bolts into their extended position. A single rotation of the key then locks the door.

The Fire Door Slam Shut Autolock’s design is based on the classic Fullex Crimebeater Lock but with the addition WANT MAXIMUM SECURITY? of the slam shut feature which provides added safety and security for fire This lock can be used with the doors. UAP INSIGHTS: THE WEBINAR KEEPING US CONNECTED

To continue to strengthen the links in our workforce while we remain working from home, UAP have started ‘UAP Insights’, a weekly online webinar sharing company news, useful information and interesting presentations. UAP Insights is for all members of staff and runs live, but is also recorded for those who miss the live event to catch up. Each webinar is started with a segment by CEO of UAP, David Jennings, giving a few updates on how the company is doing each week. The webinars are intended as a space for employees to raise questions and 13

have them answered, keep up to date with how things are going, and to have more of a connection with the running of the company. We hope that this is a way for staff to feel more connected while working remotely and to bridge the gap that some may feel while there’s little face-to-face communication. Two webinars have taken place already, with the first covering the news of the new lockdown and how UAP will tackle it. The second began with a celebration of UAP breaking its sales record in October, shipping 581,905 products that month. It went on to discuss the new employee testing strategy, staff training, and the staff wellness group.
