L E T T E R F R O M T H E E D I TO R

Well, the festive season and the years end is almost upon us again, another strange year with the hope of a more normal year ahead for us all. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. In this issue, we conclude the VAG key guides on Lishi and focus on UAP’s latest award. There’s plenty being planned for the New Year, so I’m looking forward to seeing you all on the other side. With further restrictions looking very likely in the New Year and Covid not going away any time soon, I would just like to remind everyone that UAP/Tradelocks still have you covered with your PPE equipment. Face masks, gloves, face shields, aprons and everything needed to keep yourself and your customers safe are available and can be ordered online. In closing, I again wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope to meet at a show in the future. Stay safe, Martin Pink

UAP WINS G21 AWARD IN COVID BUSINESS HERO CATEGORY

This year’s G Awards took place on Friday 26th of November, and UAP, having been announced as finalists for three categories, won the award for Covid Business Hero! OUR COVID STRATEGY UAP was quick to respond to the crisis when the pandemic first emerged in China, preventing visitors from coming to site and enabling working from home

1

weeks before the UK locked down. Concerned about the lack of quality PPE available, the we leveraged our contacts in Asia to purchase multiple PPE consignments, pivoting the business to sustain jobs, become a vital supplier and keep people safer. The team inspected factories and checked documentation to make sure everything imported was fit for purpose and deep cleaned one

of our warehouses to hold PPE stock, creating a secure area to hold alcohol-based sanitiser safely. UAP also used our existing resources to contribute to the emergency response during the initial stages of the crisis, deploying our 3D printers to make more than 250 headbands to enable face shields to be made for front-line workers, as part of a nationwide initiative by the National 3D Printing Society. Since then, UAP has also donated £500,000 worth of PPE to charities, healthcare providers, schools and community groups, as well as keeping our own team safe and providing opportunities for colleagues to connect with online staff quizzes, bitesize training and free weekly yoga sessions. UAP were also announced as finalists in the 2021 Engage Awards in three categories - Best Employee Support During a Crisis, Best Use of Training, and Best Use of Knowledge Management. We were up against some major names in the Engage Awards, including Mercedes Benz, DPD, Bupa, and many more. Unfortunately, we didn’t win at Engage Awards, but being listed as finalists among these names is still a major achievement.

OUR 2021 ROUNDUP 2021 is drawing to a close, and we’re taking a look back at everything we’ve done this year! 25TH ANNIVERSARY 2021 marks 25 years since UAP began in 1996. All those years ago, we started with just a door knocker, under the company name “Universal Imports”. Fast forward to now, and we’re a £22 million business, selling more than 3,000 products across 25 countries with a wide portfolio of brands. Read more about our 25 years in business here. PPE DONATIONS We began producing our own high-quality PPE early in the pandemic, and donated much of it to local charities, schools, and businesses. At Christmas in 2020, we donated boxes of face masks, gloves, and hand sanitizers to many of Manchester’s homeless charities including Coffee 4 Craig, Barnabus, Mustard Tree, and Lifeshare. As the Delta variant spread in mid-2021, we donated to the North West’s Emmaus charities, Bolton hospices,

3

local schools, and mosques. KINETICA+ K4 This year, we launched our strongest 3* Euro cylinder yet – the Kinetica+ K4. Thanks to its advanced technology and unrivalled built-in performance at every turn, it takes security, safety, hygiene and easy-fit functionality to a whole new level. Learn more about Kinetica+ K4 here. G21 AWARD WINNER UAP, having been announced as finalists for three categories, won the award for Covid Business Hero at the G21 Awards! We won in this category due to our quick response to the pandemic, production of our own PPE, and our donation of over £500,000 of PPE to local charities and businesses. We were also finalists for Best New Product for Soterian Slim, Best Training & Development, and listed as finalists in the 2021 Engage

Awards for Best Employee Support During a Crisis, Best Use of Training, and Best Use of Knowledge Management. DOGGY DAY CARE In September, we opened our own UAP Doggy Day Care to allow staff to bring their pups to work with them after the pandemic. Many UAP staff dogs regularly use the day care and it’s been a big success! MLA EXPO October saw the return of the MLA Expo in Telford. We attended to promote the new Kinetica+ K4 lock, Locking Systems cylinders, and the Fullex Ionic electronic lock. We also had our own coffee stall on the stand provided by Koala Koffee! INTELLIGENT HARDWARE RETAIL RANGE We launched Intelligent Hardware’s new Essential Retail Range, designed to provide everything you need for your door solutions, fully tested and selected by experts. Click here to view the range and here to download the brochure.

EXPANDING UAP In 2021, we expanded the company by 15%, increasing our number of employees to 89. This follows our substantial growth in 2020, when we were able to expand our workforce during the pandemic at an unusual time when many companies were shedding staff. We also tripled our workforce in China and set up a new office in Shanghai, an exciting development for UAP. FIREMONGERY UAP brand Firemongery released a new brochure at the end of this year for internal door hardware. Click here to read or download the brochure. Firemongery also added a range of ready-made packs for a variety of solutions, including sashlocks, latches, closers, and more - click here to see the range. MAGAZINES This year, we published 8 UAP magazines. Towards the end of the year, we merged our two publications, Hardware Intel and Cars, Keys & Locks magazine together. DECODING THE SIDE CUTS ON AN HU162 9 CUT LOCK USING LISHI 9 Cut Lock Side Cuts The 9 cut lock; the Lishi decodes the side cuts as position 1 on the bottom track knowns as Axis C (the side with no indent) and decodes position 2 and 3 on the top side of key known as Axis B (side with indent in the key). So from the above info, we can see that the Lishi tool decodes the side cuts position 1 on the bottom track Axis C (side with no indent on key) and positions 2 and 3 on the top track Axis B (side with clear indent on the key).

Decoding the Side Cuts on an HU162 9 Cut Lock Using Lishi The 9 cut lock uses just three side cuts, we need to take two readings of the three side cut positions to decode it. First, we read the side cuts in the unpicked state. We must then read these again when picked open and held in an open position to get our second readings.

The side cut grid on the tool lists three reading positions in values of 30, 60 and 90 as above. Our first reading is in the unpicked state, so before you start picking and in the unpicked state, you will only get two different readings in each position - either 60 or 90. You will not get a 30 reading in the unpicked state. The very first thing to do is to make yourself a table to jot down your readings: (see next page)

7

Position

Reading in unpicked state

Reading in the picked open position

Key cut if Key cut if using Silca using Instacode cutting cards and keyline cutting cards

1 2 3 Once you have your table ready, you are ready to begin the decode. We start by fully inserting the pick into the lock, then with no tension on the tool, simply position the side pick arm at position 1 and push the wafer to its stop position, it will stop on a reading of 60 or 90. Repeat this for positions 2 and 3 and write your readings on the table in the unpicked state column. So, let’s begin by fully inserting the tool into the lock, then with no tension on the tool, position the top lifter in position 1 and take our reading, then position the back lifter on positions 2 and 3 and take the readings.

Position the front lifter on position 1

4

Position the back lifter on position 2 and take the reading

The position 2 reading is 90

5

6

Move the back lifter to position 3

9

Position 3 reads as 60

So, in the unpicked state we have our readings and need to enter them into our table: Position

Reading in unpicked state

1 2 3

60 90 60

Reading in the picked open position

Key cut if using Silca cutting cards

Key cut if using Instacode and keyline cutting cards

We now have our first readings in the unpicked state. We must now pick the lock open and hold it in the open position and follow the same process whilst holding the lock in the picked open position. In the picked open position, you will only get readings of 30 or 60; you will not get a reading of 90 at all.

7

Position 1 reading is 30

10

8

9

Position 2 reading is 30

Position 3 reading is also 30

So, we now have our readings from the picked open position and need to add these to our table. Position

Reading in the picked open position

1 2 3

60 90 60

30 30 30

Key cut if using Silca cutting cards

Key cut if using Instacode and keyline cutting cards

We now have our full readings. We now need to convert our readings to key cuts using the table below as a guide: (see next page)

11

The cuts will be on machines using Instacode and keyline cards Cut 4 Cut 3 Cut 2 Cut 1

Looking at the table, we can enter the reading values associated to our key cuts. However, the value you enter will depend on your cutting machine and whether it uses Silca cutting cards or Instacode and keyline cutting cards, as Instacode and Silca list the cut values differently. One is the opposite of the other, so you need to enter the correct format for your machine. Silca list 1 as the highest cut and 4 as the lowest cut and Instacode list 4 as the highest cut and 1 as the deepest cut. So, let’s look at our readings converted on our table to key cuts: Position

Reading in unpicked state

1 2 3

60 90 60

30 30 30

2 1 2

Key cut if using Instacode and keyline cutting cards 3 4 3

We now have our decode of the side cuts from our Lishi tool, but the Lishi tool reads readings from both Axis B and Axis C, position 1 from Axis C and positions 2&3 from Axis B. Your key machine will want all values from Axis B and C and not just the partial read you have of each, so we must work this out. Lishi has read it as the table below: (see the next page)

12

For users of Silca cutting cards: Track Top track Axis B Bottom track Axis C

Position 1 X

Position 2 4

Position 3 3

3

For users of Instacode cutting cards: Track Top track Axis B Bottom track Axis C

To work out the missing positions on Axis B and C marked by an X is simple as long as you remember to insert opposite values in positions marked with X as: 1 always sits opposite a 4 2 always sits opposite a 3 3 always sits opposite a 2 4 always sits opposite a 1 Knowing this rule, we can quickly and easily fill in the blank positions in our table. For users of machines using Silca cutting cards your full axis B&C tracks are below: Track Top track Axis B Bottom track Axis C

13

Position 1 3

Position 2 1

Position 3 2

2

4

3

So, for users of machines using Silca cutting cards, the side cuts on this key will be: Top side track Axis B: 312 and Bottom side track Axis C: 243 These are the values to enter into your machine. For users of machines using Instacode cards like Keyline your full Axis B&C tracks are below: Track Top track Axis B Bottom track Axis C

Position 1 2

Position 2 4

Position 3 3

3

1

2

For users of machines that use Instacode cutting cards: Top side track Axis B: 243 and Bottom side track Axis C: 312 This is the decode of the side cuts completed, however, you will also need to work out from your side cuts what the conventional key cuts are on the conventional key cuts on Axis A to cut a key - this is pretty straight forward. Let’s first look at the decoded side cuts on Axis B and C:

14

So we know the side track cuts on Axis B and Axis C, to work out the A axis conventional cuts on the key we must work this out from the side cuts. To show this, below is the first three cuts decoded on Axis A:

You will see that the cuts will be same as on Axis B and C, but differ depending on whether using Instacode or Silca cards. For users of machines using Silca cutting cards, the top side track Axis B will be the same cuts as the bottom track of Axis A, and the bottom side cuts on Axis C will be the exact same cuts as the top track of Axis A. For users of machines using Instacode cards like Keyline, then you will see it’s the opposite - the top side track cuts on Axis B match exactly the top track of Axis A, and the bottom side track cuts on Axis C match exactly the bottom track of Axis A. So when asked to enter the cuts for the first 3 positions of Axis A, you know to enter positions 1, 2 and 3 as: Top track 243 and bottom track of 312 to cut correct key. Now you can successfully and accurately decode the side cuts for the 9 cut HU162. It looks a lot more complex in pictures and writing than it actually is, once you understand the process and understand the differences between Lishi decode and what your machine wants entered, it’s very quick and straight forward.

BEAT WINTER CRIME WITH THESE 6 TOP TIPS

The winter months have officially begun – the clocks have gone back and the weather’s getting cold. With the dark nights setting in, it’s an ideal time to assess your home security to protect against winter crime. Research carried out by Co-Operative Insurance reveals that home thefts are more likely in the winter months, increasing by a third between November and March. Co-op’s stats also reveal that home thefts are more likely to be caused by a burglar using physical force to break into a property, than

in summer, where burglars tend to be mostly opportunistic. With the days going dark as early as 4pm, burglars use the opportunity of low light to hide their criminal activity. Long, dark days are inevitable, but there are many simple security solutions to help protect your home through the winter. Here’s six ways to help deter burglars from breaking into your property:

1. Make it a habit to draw you

curtains and blinds at night, especially

16

when your home is unoccupied. Not only does this shield your valuables from the sight of passers-by, but also is likely to give the illusion that someone is home even if you’re not.

2. Keep your property lit up.

Light timer switches are a simple yet effective way of deterring would-be thieves. Installing motion-activated security lighting externally to your property can put intruders off attempting to break in, as it makes them more likely to be seen.

3. A weak door and lock will provide the quickest and easiest route for an intruder to enter your home. Check that your lock provides maximum protection against common lock breaking techniques, such as cylinder snapping. If it does not meet these standards, be sure to upgrade your lock. The Fullex Kinetica+ K4 cylinder provides protection against every common attack method, plus new innovative protection techniques that set it apart from other locks. 4. Visible security measures can be

the difference between a potential burglar bypassing your property or attempting to break in. Installing an alarm and even security cameras can be a big deterrent for a burglar.

17

5. Doorstep crime has become a

common method of home intrusion. Installing secure door hardware, such as door chains and door viewers, can help protect you especially in the lead up to winter. Door viewers are a simple and low-cost security solution which allow you to see who’s on the other side of the door before opening. Additionally, by installing a high-security door chain, it is possible to communicate with those who call before letting them in, giving you that added level of security and peace of mind. We always recommend that you verify the identity of a caller before opening the door.

6. As well as checking the home

security measures within your property, it’s a good idea to check your garden too. Installing a gate or fence to surround your property can aid security – however, you should bear in mind that high fences can also provide burglars with the ideal cover to hide behind. It’s therefore a good idea to keep fences low and gates to your property closed. A gravel drive can also be an effective deterrent as they create a distinct sound when stepped on, so burglars will be aware that they could be heard walking towards your property.

WHAT’S THE BEST LETTERBOX FOR YOUR HOME? SOTERIAN VS. IPLATE

With so many options for letterplates on the market, it can be difficult to choose the best letterbox for your home. The main points to consider are the appearance of the letterbox and how it will contribute to the overall look of your front door, and the security features; quality letterboxes have a big role to play in preventing intruders from entering your home, as the letterbox is a point of entry. Intruders can attempt to “fish” items through the gap or open the lock from the inside, which is why a high-security letterplate is so

important. Take a look at our top two options from UAP: The TS008 Soterian and iPlate, both packed with security features to keep your home protected.

SOTERIAN TS008 & SOTERIAN SLIM The Soterian is a stylish, streamlined and secure letterbox, designed to add essential security features to the door while also contributing to its overall appearance. TS008 and PAS24:2016 approved, the innovative pivoting stay mechanism reduces

22

the opening to 37° for protection against letterbox fishing, as well as preventing intruders from being able to manipulate the cylinder and unlock the door from the inside via the entrance of the letterbox. There are also no visible fixings on the outside, meaning that intruders cannot unscrew it from the door as a means to break in. Rigorous testing ensures that the Soterian can withstand thousands of openings, protecting your door for years to come. The letterbox is also available in a Certifire fire-rated version, tested for up to 60 minutes of protection. The Soterian Slim has all the great features of the original Soterian but within a smaller package, slimmer by 21mm, for a sleeker look. Both letterplates meet TS008 test requirements – this means that they eliminate the risk of an intruder gaining access to the property by means of physical force, letterbox fishing, and lock manipulation, whilst also maintaining clear access for postal items. IPLATE The iPlate has a unique frameless and slim design, making it the

23

perfect choice for an entryway into any modern home. Created with help from Royal Mail, the iPlate’s innovative design avoids many of the issues associated with regular letterplates, such as its Patent Pending Soft Close feature. First edition iPlates utilised a unique un-sprung hinge, a magnetic ‘click to close’ feature, and soft plastic brushes moulded into the rubber of the letterplate. The new features of the iPlate take it further by adding internal changes that leave the exterior unchanged and as sleek as ever. With no visible frame, our very own design classic will look good on any door. It now boasts traditional brushes in front of the aperture and is internally sprung with UAP’s ultra-reliable torsion bar, to give that extra feel of positive closure. The iPlate also has a corrosionresistant finish, manufactured from high-grade stainless steel, and a lifetime coating guarantee, making it a perfect choice for homes in coastal areas.

QUESTION: I had a Ford Kuga today that only had 7 key cuts in the door, the Lishi tool picked it and decoded it ok, but how do I find the missing cuts for the full key?

QUESTION: I had 2020 combo to do the new Peugeot variant - I programmed the key, it said all fine, but van was a non-start, any ideas?

ANSWER: Yes, on these new PSA systems of which your combo is one, once you have coded the key and completed programming, leave the ignition on for 30 minutes after this, then you will be able to start the vehicle. If it’s still an option, go back to the vehicle and switch ignition on and wait 30 mins, all should be fine.

ANSWER:

There is a 7 cut version of the lock. Use your 10 cut Lishi to pick and decode, but your decode becomes positions 1 to 7 and cuts on IC card 1370, which is the dedicated cutting card for this series.
