About Hardware Intel Magazine Hardware Intel is a magazine powered by UAP. It covers current news, events and new products across the UAP Group, including our brands Intelligent Hardware, Locking Systems, Fullex, Firemongery, as well as industry news. Hardware Intel is the place for all your door and window hardware needs, covering topics such as security and fire safety from an individual household to large-scale industrial level, with insight from industry experts.

A Letter from David Jennings Hello. It certainly feels a lot more optimistic everywhere with the vaccination programme rolling out at an impressive rate, and we now have some time to reflect on how this will affect the world going forwards. We touch on some of those subjects inside this edition of Hardware Intel with our touch-free hardware innovations. Spring is also just around the corner and attention turns to the maintenance of door hardware that is essential at this time of year. This allows us to bring back the brilliant Pickbuster, which not only helps protect basic cylinders against lock bumping, but also is a fantastic lock lubricant that seeps into every nook and cranny of the lock system. Our Intelligent Hardware brand has seen a lot of developments over the last year and we are delighted to be launching our Compliance Made Easy Firemongery brand, which is vitally important in the post-Grenfell era. On a personal note, I was extremely humbled to be made Honorary Vice President of the Encepehalitis Society, which is a disease which has sadly touched my life from a young age, and I am delighted to be able to help others in a similar position. I hope you enjoy this copy of Hardware Intel. Take care.

INSIDE THE TESTING PROCESS: HARDWARE INTEL PODCAST EPISODE 5 In the fifth instalment of the Hardware Intel podcast, host Sian Astley joins UAP Technical Services Director John McLoughlin and Product Certification Manager Julian Roberts to discuss how we test and develop our products. John and Julian talk about the development of our letterplates and how they were influenced by regulation requirements, how ex-offenders can help in informing the security industry on how to make their products crime resistant, and how product testing has changed in response to the Grenfell tragedy. Hardware used in fire doors must now meet a dual certification, not only for fire, but for safety too. 1

This poses a challenge to products solely designed to fulfil one purpose. Julian goes on to explain that one of the biggest challenges in the testing process is the development of products designed to prevent snapping, bumping and picking, as products must be redesigned to react to these types of attack becoming more frequent. WE WENT #RED4WED FOR WORLD ENCEPHALITIS DAY There was a rosy glow amongst the UAP team in February as we dressed in red to support World Encephalitis Day on 22nd February for the Encephalitis Society. Thanks to the pandemic, we have largely been working from home for the past year but social distancing couldn’t stop the fun with many of the team getting their four-legged ‘office assistants’ involved and dressing them in red as part of the fun! CEO, David Jennings, has recently been appointed as Vice President of the Encephalitis Society in the UK. The cause is close to his heart following the loss of his brother

to the condition several years ago and he was pleased that so many colleagues got behind the effort to raise the profile for much needed research, education and support for people affected by Encephalitis and their families. “Challenging everyone to get involved and share their photos of their red outfits and their pets was a great way for a little team banter,” says David. “One of the toughest things about the past year has been keeping the team ethos and camaraderie alive while everyone is working remotely so a simple thing like posting pictures of pets in their red outfits has really brought 2

everyone together.” Amongst the humans supporting World Encephalitis Day were marketing director Kamila Kasperowicz and Product Certification Manager Julian Roberts, while four-legged furry companions dressing in red for the day included Holly the Jack Russell, Darcy the French Bulldog and Lola the Cavapoo. Kamila added: “Wearing red for the day was not just a way of having fun it was a way of showing solidarity for all the people affected by Encephalitis. UAP has a long track record of supporting charities and good causes, from local homelessness organisations and sponsoring grass roots sports,

through to planting trees and funding construction of community schools in Nepal. We always know when we ask the team to get involved that they will be on board and I’ve loved seeing all the pictures.”

EASE OUT OF LOCKDOWN WITH OUR COVID-SAFE HARDWARE

As the UK Government outlines our gradual exit from COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions, many of us will be preparing for life on the other side. However, many of the vulnerable who are yet to be vaccinated will likely be more cautious about getting back to normal. We’re all used to social distancing and wearing protective gear, but another thing to consider is making our homes more COVID safe. Most shops and businesses now use

plastic panels to separate people - for example, at a supermarket checkout - to prevent the spread of germs, and things can also be done at home to keep residents protected as visitors begin to become more frequent. CONTACTLESS ENTRY SLOTS UAP’s unique contactless entry slots were initially designed for the passing of ID cards or other material to verify the identity of the visitor to protect against rogue traders and bogus callers, but they can also 4

function as an extra layer of protection against the virus in your home. Prescription cards, shopping lists, and any small pieces of paper or cards can be passed through without spreading germs between the people on either side. Simply lift up the sliding latch of the Isolating Contactless Entry Slot from the inside to pass or receive items into your home contact-free, and put the latch back down after use. It should also be noted that Coronavirus can be spread via surfaces which may be passed through the door via the slot or letterbox, but it is very unlikely that the virus will be spread from inside packages and envelopes etc. Wipe down the exteriors of the items you receive through the slots with anti-bacterial wipes and wash your hands thoroughly for added protection. Click here to shop Contactless Entry Slots. WIDE ANGLE DOOR VIEWERS Door viewers allow you to see who is on the other side of your door without opening it, and it’s recommended that for safety reasons, no door should be opened to a

visitor without first checking who it is. If you’re still in a bubble or shielding, you can check that your visitor is someone you’re expecting before you open the door to them. UAP offers a range of wide-angled door viewers which have the added security benefit of allowing the user to see beyond the limited straightahead view of standard door viewers; some visitors may attempt to hide out of sight, but a wide angled door viewer will be more likely to expose them to the inhabitant. Click here to shop Door Viewers. DOOR CHAINS If you see that a visitor is not someone you know or are not expecting, keep them out with UAP door chains. We offer narrow TS003 or sliding door chains, made from high grade steel and fire rated. Door chains prevent your door from being forced open by an unwanted visitor or intruder, so they’re an essential safety feature of any front door. Our door chains can withstand breaking forces of over 2kN (200kg), as each individual chain in the link is machine welded. Click here to shop Door Chains.

TRADELOCKS

2-IN-1 LOCK MAINTENANCE AND PROTECTION WITH PICKBUSTER but there are still millions of homes across the UK that use older or budget standard cylinders that have little to no protection. This can be mitigated with Pickbuster as it modifies the lock to have an anti-bump function without the need to replace.

We all know that locks need regular maintenance to keep them operating optimally, and UAP brand Fullex recommends you refresh your locks every 4 weeks with a silicone-based lubricant - click here to watch our how-to video. Keeping your locks secure and protected from attacks by intruders is part of this issue, as a well-maintained lock will be more secure than one that isn’t. Pickbuster is an iconic UAP product that not only lubricates Euro lock cylinders, but also helps to prevent lock bumping, keeping your doors more secure. Many locks are created to be anti-bump and pick these days,

Pickbuster works by seeping into all the nooks and crannies of the inside of any barrel lock, attaching itself to the metal. This essentially creates more pins within the lock, preventing a bump key from opening the door by making the pins jump above the shear line. Packs of Pickbuster available on Tradelocks contain five sachets – one sachet is needed per lock. The sachets have been specially designed to fit easily into any narrow lock to avoid mess and maximise effectiveness. It’s recommended to refresh your locks with Pickbuster every two years.

UAP INVESTS IN LIFE SAVING DEFIBRILLATORS

UAP have chosen to invest in a set of defibrillators at our work premises at Whitefield and Radcliffe. Defibrillators help to protect against Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), which is a leading cause of death in the UK, affecting around 700,000 individuals each year, according to the Resuscitation Council. Both machines are registered on the heartsafe.org.uk website. By adding our AED we are making all Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) easy to locate throughout the UK. 7

These devices can save lives in an emergency, so it’s very important that they’re available and in working order across the country. We also would like to share a free training resource with an interactive movies where you can learn the essential skills needed to save a life – visit https://life-saver.org.uk to learn what to do in an emergency. This follows other work we have done with public health and charity, including the Encephalitis Society.

FIREMONGERY

NEW FIREMONGERY PACK SELECTOR A new feature, the Firemongery Pack Selector, has been added to the UAP website. This helpful tool will help you to find the right fire door products in three easy steps, just by asking a few simple questions. Step 1 of the Pack Selector asks “Do you need the door to lock”, and simply selecting “Yes” or “No” will take you on to the next question “Do you require a door lever?”. Step 2 asks if your door is a double door, and depending on your answers, you will be recommended a pack or combination of packs to complete your solution. Firemongery packs have been carefully selected by our hardware experts, allowing you to choose with full confidence. We provide a choice of “Firepacks” which includes the Sashlock Pack, Deadlock Pack, and Latch Pack, plus a range of closers, including the Budget Closer, Economy Closer, and Electromagnetic Closer packs. Finally, Firemongery has a range of accessory packs – the Pull/Push packs for pull handles, Flush Bolt & Socket Pack, Automatic Fire Door

Sign Pack, and the Ball Bearing Hinge Pack.

All Firemongery products are fully certified and selected by experts, appropriate for use in fire doors. Designed and developed in the UK, the collection balances performance, practicality and aesthetics. The packs in combination with the Pack Selector are designed to provide you with everything you need for your particular solution, so there’s no need to have to shop around for any extra pieces, saving you time and money.
