About Hardware Intel Magazine Hardware Intel is a magazine powered by UAP. A Letter from David Jennings Happy New Year everyone. I know COVID is at the top of everyone’s minds at the moment, as it has been at UAP. I am pleased that UAP’s COVID policies have resulted in no disruption to our operation functions, and we can continue to service our customers properly. The other thing on people’s minds has been stock, now that Brexit is out of the way. We can foresee significant issues in the supply chain especially after Chinese New Year if the virus in Northern China spreads South. In order to manage that, we at UAP have increased our stock levels to £8 million and increased our warehousing to 100,000 sq ft to cover what we expect to be a bumpy period for some. We’ve also got some great news coming up on new products especially cylinders with the launch of our Master Suite MILOS range. Additionally, the launch of the UAP Store www.uapstore.com will enable us to give everyone access to over 6,000 products and to check stocks. And thank you to everyone who has tuned into our Hardware Intel Podcasts which have given us the chance to share our visions and views with everyone. We have really appreciated the positive feedback. EVERYTHING WE DID IN 2020 What a year 2020 was! UAP have been working very hard, keeping everything moving during such strange times, and it hasn’t dampened our successes and achievements. We’ve had product launches, launched a podcast, new websites, and began producing our own PPE during the pandemic. Here are the top 10 things we did in 2020: WE ACQUIRED TWO NEW BRANDS We acquired Newcastle-based masterkeying company, Locking Systems, shortly after our acquisition of Intelligent Hardware the previous year. Locking Systems is now integrated into the UAP brand, still operating with its original staff in Gateshead, and Firemongery products are now a part of the Intelligent Hardware brand. 1
THE UAP PORTAL OPENED The UAP customer Trade Portal was launched in the first half of the year, designed to give customers greater control of their UAP accounts. With a wide range of features, the UAP Portal allows you to place orders and check stock availability at any time of the day or night, seven days a week meaning you won’t be restricted to office hours, review your order history, view invoices, and much more. THE PANDEMIC In March, UAP and every other company in the world had to think about how we were going to deal with the pandemic. We put preventative measures in place as early as possible, social distancing staff, taking temperatures and providing hand gels to reduce risk. In mid-March, UAP employees

that could work from home did so, and in April, we shut our doors completely. We reopened our doors in May, with only essential warehouse staff onsite. By this point, we were also producing our own PPE with our manufacturers to help with the national shortage. PPE Guarantee was launched, providing the country with essential protective equipment. By December, more staff were beginning to return to the UAP offices on a part-time basis. We started our own COVID testing program to keep our staff as safe as possible and locate COVID cases within the company. WE LAUNCHED THE UAP ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE During our closure, a number of staff were placed on furlough as part of the government scheme to keep businesses afloat during the pandemic. While these members of staff were away from work, they were receiving expert training as part of the Academy of Excellence, implemented through weekly Zoom meetings with business solutions consultant Nicola John. SUSTAINABILITY This year, we have been putting in developing more sustainability resources and improving the eco-friendliness of

our products and company operations. UAP have always had sustainability at heart, saving energy and resources where we can. In 2020, we launched new product packaging for our brand Intelligent Hardware which is 100% plastic-free, made from cardboard and a potato starch-based imitation plastic. WE STARTED TWO NEW MAGAZINES When we came back to work after the furlough period, we began two new UAP magazines, Hardware Intel and the re-launch of popular Cars, Keys & Locks magazine. Each magazine is published online every two months for free, and covers industry and company news, as well as helpful auto locksmithing guides. WE LAUNCHED UAP AMERICA In June, we were very pleased to open our doors in Andover, Massachusetts, bringing the very best of British designed and engineered door and window hardware and security products to the USA. UAP’S FIRST PODCAST LAUNCHES In October, we announced that we were launching UAP’s first ever podcast – Hardware Intel: Ear Edition. Intended to supplement our new multimedia resources such as the 2

magazines, Hardware Intel: Ear Edition covers a range of fascinating topics with information from industry experts. It’s not to be missed! Catch up with the episodes here. WE DONATED ESSENTIAL PPE TO CHARITY Towards the end of the year, UAP have been donating surplus PPE to various local charities, businesses and schools that need it. Many not-for-profit charities in Manchester that work with vulnerable people such as homeless people or vulnerable youth have very limited funds to put towards protective equipment, which they need to reopen again as National Restrictions lift. As we have been using our manufacturing resources to produce our own range of PPE since March, we now have a surplus that we can happily donate to those who need it more. ISOLATE SAFELY WITH CONTACTLESS DOOR SLOTS
To help protect at-risk people or those who are currently self-isolating at home, UAP can provide Isolating Contactless Entry Slots for your front door, making it easy to pass items such as lists for shopping and prescriptions from either side of the door without the need to fully open it and expose people on either side to the potential risk of COVID-19. The slots were initially designed for the passing of ID cards or other material to verify the identity of the visitor to protect against rogue traders and bogus callers, but they can now function as an extra component of protection against the virus in your home. With the slots, the front door acts as a protective shield for both parties, barring germs and bacteria from spreading between the two. Simply lift up the sliding latch of the Isolating Contactless Entry Slot from the

LOCKING SYSTEMS LAUNCHES MILOS 100
This month, UAP brand Locking Systems has seen the launch of the MILOS 100 cylinder range, a high-security and high-performance addition to Locking System’s portfolio. CYLINDER FEATURES The cylinder is made with a sacrificial cut as standard on each side, meaning that when force is applied to either end, the cylinder will break away for the sacrificial cut line only. This leaves the remaining cylinder operational and the locking mechanism intact. Fitted in each side of the cylinder are hardened steel anti-drill pins, protecting the cylinder from break in attempts with a drill. All moving pins inside the cylinder are hardened steel of minimum 50 HRC, plated in nickel. The cylinders are also protected with anti-pick, thanks to the minimum of three pins in either side of the cylinder.
This makes it extremely difficult for a common burglar to pick. They also use a unique and patented anti-bump system which does not use trap pins. THE RANGE Also featured is an unrestricted key section for ease of local key duplication, 800,000 differs, and six pins as standard. Classroom and clutch/barricade functions are available. MILOS 100 includes a comprehensive range of offset sizes. Scandinavian, rim and threaded cylinders are also available. BIMobject provides design inspiration and digital product information for architects and engineers, “while giving building product manufacturers a better way to reach, influence and understand them”. 100 of the top architecture firms use BIMobject for their projects – and now UAP are a part of the platform. Publishing our products on BIMobject allows architects and designers to discover them, and they can then be forwarded on to our sales team to discuss supply for their project. When viewing our products, designers can see the product description and details, their classifications, links to technical certifications, and links to buy. BIMobjects also provides users with data on how and where their product listings are being used, meaning we have access to new details about how our products can work in practice, allowing us to “understand how 13
products perform with designers, spot trends early and find opportunities for growth.” Making our products available on BIMobject will increase their visibility to designers and architects, leading to more sales, potentially for large-scale projects.
