About Hardware Intel Magazine Hardware Intel is a magazine powered by UAP. It covers current news, events and new products across the UAP Group, including our brands Intelligent Hardware, Locking Systems, Fullex, Firemongery, as well as industry news. Hardware Intel is the place for all your door and window hardware needs, covering topics such as security and fire safety from an individual household to large-scale industrial level, with insight from industry experts.

A Letter from David Jennings Welcome back to Hardware Intel. It’s been a strange summer, but I have been constantly impressed by how a lot of companies and people are coping with the new normal. And whilst COVID-19 has had many negatives, I think it is important to remember the many benefits it has brought us, too. I know at UAP we are looking to try and get back to a new normal by integrating the old way of working in an office with the new idea of remote working. And so, we will end up with a hybrid of the best of both and hopefully be all the better for it. It is a well-worn cliché, but every business’s key asset is their staff, and none more so than at UAP. We have tremendous depth of talent across all our areas, and we have spent the last few weeks recognising that, and in putting structures in place to reward and retain all our employees. To each and every person at UAP I say thank you for your efforts, resilience, dedication and courage in helping the UAP Group grow during the COVID-19 period, and the future looks bright for you all. To our customers, I say thank you for your business and your understanding in these trying times. We will always try and do our utmost to service your needs, and when we fail to live up to your expectations you can be sure we are trying our best to resolve the issue. Enjoy this edition of Hardware Intel, and have a safe Autumn. Thank you.

UAP

HARDWARE INTEL MAGAZINE

REDUCING OUR IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT UAP has always been a socially and environmentally responsible company, having implemented and taken part in countless initiatives over the years to do our bit for the environment and our community. We work closely with our suppliers and customers around the world to implement ethical and environmentally friendly business solutions. WHAT EFFECT CAN BUSINESS HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT? The main problems that affect the environment and contribute to global warming are greenhouse gases and plastic waste. Every individual, household, and business organisation, or really anything that uses and produces resources, has a carbon footprint. This is the total greenhouse gas emissions produced and amount of energy used. The approximate carbon footprint of your household or business can be calculated using a carbon footprint calculator.

1

Businesses will also have an indirect carbon footprint – for example, the waste or emissions produced by people using their products. Plastic waste is also a major problem for our environment, as it fills up our landfills which are already at maximum capacity, and also appears in our oceans. Thousands of tonnes of plastic waste from western countries including the UK are also shipped to other countries such as Malaysia every year, and is essentially dumped there. That’s because the UK produces plastic waste in such enormous volumes that we currently do not have the means to deal with it by recycling or adequate disposal. Plastics will not normally biodegrade on their own for decades or even centuries, and so every piece of plastic that we use is destined to stay with us. Businesses of all kinds contribute to these environmental issues to varying degrees. It can be difficult to know

HARDWARE INTEL MAGAZINE

exactly what the environmental impact of individual businesses is as they do not have to declare their energy consumption or CO2 usage. This makes greenwashing a big issue in business as it can be difficult for consumers to know all about a company and their practices. WHAT DO WE DO DIFFERENTLY? We have taken major steps over the years to reduce down our energy consumption as a business. Our offices and warehouses are powered mainly by solar power, and we use lower-energy electricals (e.g. eco lightbulbs) and have properly insulated our buildings to ensure that they retain heat, so we don’t have to use as much energy to stay warm at work in winter and cool in summer. As a result, we use

UAP

around a third of the energy of the average medium-sized business per month. Starting with our brand Intelligent Hardware, we are cutting out all plastic from our packaging. We intend to do the same with all our other products and will be using 100% biodegradable materials including cardboard and a bio-polymer made from potato starch. As a door hardware company, most of our products are made from metals. We ensure that we source these sustainably so that our products are not damaging the earth. We have implemented many other environmental initiatives in our community as well as within the company; visit our Environment page to learn more. 2

UAP LAUNCHES ONLINE TRADE PORTAL

UAP has recently launched a new online account management system, the UAP Trade Portal, currently being ‘live’ tested with a selection of customers. The UAP Trade Portal will run alongside and complement UAP’s existing trade customer channels. The Portal will fulfil a major update to the UAP experience, improving the efficiency of the ordering process, saving time for customers and giving them much more control. Ordering is made quick and easy with customers able to browse, search, filter or upload a spreadsheet to find the relevant products. If you regularly purchase a particular product, you can simply re-order it again in the desired quantity at the click of a button. There’s even an option to save favourite or most ordered products too. All Portal prices match with any previously negotiated rates specific to the customer’s account. A previous call into the Sales Team can now be replaced with a self-service visit to the UAP Trade Portal, with customers benefitting from being able to view their account order history, check product stock levels before ordering, view prices for speedier quotation creation and much more.

The Portal is available via PC, tablet and mobile and is accessible 24/7, with customer orders and enquiries no longer being constrained to UAP office hours. Zoom demos will be introduced to help customers new to the Portal maximise its benefits along with step-by-step video walkthroughs, ensuring they make the most of what this new system has to offer. The testing is currently underway with a small number of UAP customers who are helping us to iron out any teething problems that arise and provide us with feedback on how we can make the new UAP Trade Portal as customer-friendly as possible. After this initial period of testing the UAP Portal will be available to all UAP Trade customers. We’re excited for the new opportunities and possibilities that digitalising our customer experience will bring and we hope that our customers will enjoy the new benefits that come with it. If you would like to learn more about the UAP Trade Portal and what it can do for you, please email marketing@uapcorporate.com.. marketing@uapcorporate.com 4

UAP BEGINS FLEXIBLE OFFICE RETURN

UAP employees who have been working remotely will soon begin to return to the office as lockdown restrictions ease. Plans have been made to allow those who have been able to work from home to continue this on a flexible part-time basis, and most will begin to come back into UAP’s headquarters once or twice a week to begin. UAP has observed great benefits of flexible home working during the pandemic with employees able to save time and money commuting, spending more time with family, and more options for child care, and we want to retain some of these benefits going forward. Some members of staff feel the need to work in an office environment and socialise with their coworkers, which we are now in a position to do post lockdown. Employees will be able to choose which days they want to spend in the office and when they would like to be at home, giving us all a flexible approach to the ‘new normal’ that works for everyone.

5

three office locations are being set up for the return to keep departments separated and reduce the amount of contact between people in the company. Our Sales, Finance and Admin departments will be temporarily relocated to our newly refurbished Bank House in Bury. This will also be the designated location for in-person customer meetings. Our warehouse operations will continue to be kept completely separate from the rest of the company to insure the safety of goods coming in and out of the premises. David Jennings, CEO, says: “This is a big step forward in our new normal, and it is a positive step for everyone”. UAP have also recently signed the lease to a new 26,000 square-foot warehouse based in Radcliffe. This move will alleviate our issues with limited warehouse space as the company has expanded over the years.

THE NEW IPLATE® DESIGN

The iPlate® in Silver Anodised UAP’s brand Intelligent Hardware have released a new design of the classic iPlate with brand new features, inspired by the sleek contemporary technology in our modern world. The iPlate has a unique frameless and slim design, making it the perfect choice for an entryway into any modern home. Created with help from Royal Mail, the iPlate’s innovative design avoids many of the issues associated with regular letterplates, such as its Patent Pending Soft Close feature. First edition iPlates utilised a unique un-sprung hinge, a magnetic ‘click to close’ feature, and soft plastic brushes

moulded into the rubber of the letterplate. The new features of the iPlate take it further by adding internal changes that leave the exterior unchanged and as sleek as ever. With no visible frame, our very own design classic will look good on any door. It now boasts traditional brushes in front of the aperture and is internally sprung with UAP’s ultra-reliable torsion bar, to give that extra feel of positive closure. UAP always listens closely to customers; these new features were introduced following customer suggestions and requests to help make your door the best it can be.

FIRE DOOR SAFETY WEEK WITH FIREMONGERY UAP are again supporting Fire Door Safety Week this year, which runs from the 21st to the 27th of September 2020. Founded by the British Woodworking Federation, the BWF-CERTIFIRE Fire Door Scheme and the UK’s Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS), Fire Door Safety Week aims to raise awareness of the importance of fire doors and the need for their proper installation and maintenance in residential and public buildings. “In everyday use the simple purpose of a fire door is just as any other door. However, since the break-out of a fire is never predictable, a fire door, unlike any other door must perform to prime purpose – to delay the spread of fire and smoke; protecting lives and property” - FDSW With everyone still spending a lot more of their days at home than usual during the Coronavirus pandemic and many people working flexibly away from the office, it’s more important than ever to ensure that people’s homes are fire safe and that they can safely exit should an emergency arise. Life threatening incidents can easily and rapidly occur in high rise buildings without proper working fire door exits, and the tragic case of Grenfell tower in 2017 serves as a reminder of how important this issue really is. UAP CEO DAVID JENNINGS SUPPORTS THE ENCEPHALITIS SOCIETY

David Jennings, CEO of UAP Limited, has this year pledged to financially support the Encephalitis Society, a charity that aims to raise awareness of encephalitis and support those affected. His generous donation will be given across three years to fund various schemes and initiatives created by the charity that aim to raise awareness of encephalitis and generate helpful resources and fundamental research. WHAT IS ENCEPHALITIS? Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain, caused by an infection or through the immune system attacking the brain by mistake. Encephalitis can affect anyone at any age, with up to 6,000 cases each year in the UK. The symptoms include a flu-like illness or headache in the infectious encephalitis cases, followed by more serious

13

symptoms such as an “alteration in the level of consciousness” and seizures. Autoimmune encephalitis often has a longer onset with varying symptoms. The brain is affected by encephalitis and it takes much longer to recover from injury than the rest of the body, so rehabilitation focuses on this, as well as coming to terms with the problems that can follow. This is what the Encephalitis Society works to contribute to by providing support, information, legal advice and community. WHAT WILL BE DONE? David has pledged to fund two major projects for the charity, supplying £150,000 over three years. The first of these projects is already underway, which is working to collaborate with encephalitis specialists to create content and support materials for young people who have been affected by the

condition. This will include online learning modules and bespoke factsheets to help them deal with issues such as brain injury and the mental wellbeing issues that can follow. The project will also produce a curated video collection giving a voice to first-hand experiences of young people affected by encephalitis, available to watch on YouTube. Finally, the project will be creating the “Young Experts Scheme” which will enable young people to connect with peers similarly affected who can act as positive role models to form a community with. This project will help to enable young people affected by encephalitis to understand that they are not alone in their experiences and that there are resources and a community to help them – the sense of isolation can be one of the hardest parts of the condition to deal with.

The subsequent projects in following years will allow the Encephalitis Society to begin to develop their international work following an expert baseline situational analysis which is currently being undertaken, and which will inform the Charity’s international strategy going forward. This review will help the charity identify geographical areas of need and where global policy change is required. With thanks to the longer term funding from David Jennings, CEO at UAP they can build on this work, focusing their efforts, and really make a difference to the lives of people affected by encephalitis, wherever in the world they live.
