Leading the Future of Maritime Innovation
HEFRING MARINE’SInterview with
CEO KARL BIRGIR BJÖRNSSON
What inspired the founding of Hefring Marine, and what key problem did you aim to solve in the maritime industry?
Hefring Marine was founded as the result of a research project initiated by Karl Björnsson & Björn Jónsson, who are now the CEO and COO of the company. While working for a boat-building company in Iceland, they recognized the need to
monitor and minimize the impact of high g-force hull slamming events on fast-moving vessels. Such impacts posed safety risks to both the boats and their crews. To address this challenge, they reached out to Magnús, a specialist at the University of Iceland, and together they formed a research partnership. Their collaboration focused on studying the dynamics of hull slamming and
its effects on vessels. Over time, their research evolved into the development of a sophisticated solution designed to enhance maritime safety. This project eventually gave birth to Hefring’s current product IMAS, which digitally monitors vessel movements and helps reduce the risks associated with operating high-speed boats, making it a leader in marine safety technology.
Hefring Marine is known for its intelligent vessel performance and management system IMAS. Can you explain how the technology works and what sets it apart from other marine solutions?
While many data logger tools exist in the marine industry, what sets IMAS apart is its real-time, actionable guidance provided directly to operators on board. Unlike typical systems that only collect and display data, IMAS actively offers clear, easy-to-follow recommendations, enabling operators to take immediate action to enhance fuel efficiency or improve safety. This hands-on, proactive approach makes it much simpler for operators and crew to optimize vessel performance during operations, rather than just reviewing data after the fact. The system’s user-friendly guidance not only drives immediate results but also promotes long-term behavioural changes, encouraging operators to adopt safer and more efficient practices over time. Additionally, IMAS retains its powerful data analysis capabilities, allowing for retrospective assessments and further optimizations. However, it’s this “do something about it” approach that truly distinguishes IMAS from other marine monitoring tools, giving it a unique edge in fostering safer and more efficient maritime operations.
How does your system utilize AI and machine learning, and what benefits do these technologies bring to your clients?
IMAS leverages multiple data sources from onboard the vessel to feed its AI algorithms, providing real-time insights to captains. By integrating data from various sensors—such as motion, engine performance, weather conditions, and others—IMAS creates a comprehensive profile of each specific vessel. One of its key features, IMAS Eco Speed, uses this data to determine the optimal operating range for the vessel to minimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. The system constantly processes and analyzes this data, ensuring that captains receive precise, real-time guidance on
how to operate their vessel most efficiently. By tailoring the recommendations to the unique characteristics of each ship, IMAS helps crews make informed decisions that can significantly lower operational costs and environmental impact. This advanced use of AI sets IMAS apart, offering not just raw data but actionable insights that enhance both fuel efficiency and sustainability.
Who are your primary clients, and what types of vessels benefit most from the IMAS technology?
IMAS’s wide-ranging capability makes it a versatile tool across various maritime sectors, enhancing efficiency and safety for virtually any vessel type. Whether it’s a military ship, a pilot boat, a search and rescue vessel, or a small fishing craft, IMAS delivers valuable insights to optimize performance. Its strength lies in its ability to benefit any vessel equipped with an engine and a hull, regardless of size or purpose. By monitoring critical factors like engine performance, motion, and weather conditions, IMAS provides tailored recommendations to optimize a vessel’s operation. This broad versatility makes IMAS an ideal solution for reducing fuel consumption, lowering emissions, and improving overall safety standards. With its flexible use and affordable pricing, IMAS becomes an essential tool for any organization seeking to enhance maritime operations, no matter the vessel’s scale or mission.
Can you share any success stories or case studies where Hefring Marine’s solutions have made a significant impact?
Looking at the data we’ve collected to date, we’ve observed remarkable improvements in both safety and efficiency when operators follow IMAS’s guidance. Specifically, there has been an 87% reduction in high g-force hull slamming events when vessels operate at the recommended safety speeds. Furthermore, vessels have achieved up to a 20% reduction in fuel consumption by following the system’s
real-time guidance. These outcomes are derived from an extensive dataset of 330,000 nautical miles traveled over 30,000 individual trips. This proven track record is a crucial factor, and Hefring Marine can confidently provide this level of reliability to operators. The data-backed performance not only showcases the system’s effectiveness but also instills confidence in operators, knowing they are supported by a tool with demonstrated success in improving safety and operational efficiency across a variety of vessels.
How do you see the application of your technology evolving in different sectors, such as commercial, search and rescue, and recreational boating?
We have established a strong presence in the commercial, search and rescue (SAR), and workboat sectors, where IMAS has proven to be a highly effective tool. Our next goal is to expand into the yachting industry and demonstrate the unique value IMAS can bring to yacht owners, brokers, and their customers. The system’s ability to enhance fuel efficiency, optimize performance, and improve safety is equally valuable in the yachting world. By providing realtime insights and actionable guidance, IMAS can help yacht owners reduce operational costs, extend vessel lifespan, and offer a smoother, safer experience for passengers. We are excited to showcase how IMAS can elevate yacht operations and deliver significant benefits to this new market.
Are there any new products or services in the pipeline that you’re particularly excited about?
We are continuously evolving IMAS with new features and updates that future system owners will benefit from. Over the next year, we have many exciting advancements planned to further enhance the system’s capabilities. In addition to this ongoing development, we’ve recently introduced a version of IMAS specifically configured for boat builders to use during sea trials. This specialized system has been very well-received by customers, providing valuable insights and improving the performance evaluation of new vessels. Our commitment to innovation ensures that IMAS remains a cuttingedge solution, offering even more value to operators as the product evolves.
How do you envision the future of maritime technology, and what role do you see Hefring Marine playing in that future?
Marine technology is finally beginning to catch up after lagging behind other transportation sectors for many years. I believe that over the next few years, we’ll witness widespread adoption of advanced technologies in the maritime industry, aiding captains, fleet managers, and maintenance crews in unprecedented ways. Hefring is well-positioned to lead this transformation, particularly in the areas of safety, sustainability, and overall vessel lifecycle management. With our cutting-edge solutions like IMAS, we aim to play a pivotal role in helping the industry embrace this new wave of innovation, ensuring that vessels are not only safer and more efficient but also better equipped for long-term sustainability.

AD Ports Group Fast-Tracks Land Transport in the Middle East with a New Rail Logistics Offering via Etihad Rail Network
Article Source: adportsgroup.com
The new solution, provided by Noatum Logistics, inaugurated with new rail shuttle service connecting Khalifa Port and Fujairah Terminals
ABU Dhabi, UAE – 03 September 2024: Noatum Logistics, an AD Ports Group company and a leading logistics provider serving the globe across all major markets and trade lanes, announced today the launch of its new rail logistics solution for the Middle East region. The new offering, which complements Noatum Logistics’ integrated regional portfolio of freight forwarding products leveraging land, sea, and air transport, was inaugurated with the launch of its first rail shuttle service between Khalifa Port and Fujairah Terminals.
The shuttle service, which uses the UAE’s national railway developed and operated by Etihad Rail, aims to add significant capacity to the regional logistics network and provide optionality to customers transporting large volumes of overland freight. Specifically, the service will offer weekly departures capable of carrying of up to 156 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) or 78 Forty-Foot Equivalent
Units (FEUs) per direction via a single train. Depending on demand, the solution can incorporate first and last mile truck transport, thereby providing clients with seamless endto-end connectivity.
Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO – AD Ports Group, said: The inaugural journey of the first commercial train shuttle from Khalifa Port to Fujairah Terminals is a major milestone for our broader AD Ports Group family, as it delivers on our wise leadership’s vision for boosting the connectivity across the UAE and the broader Middle East region. Serving as a key pillar of our multimodal transport network, the National Railway Network - developed and operated by Etihad Railway - not only links our strategic seaports and inland logistics assets, but also serves as a springboard for our nation’s and the region’s future economic development for generations to come.”
Qusai Kankazar, Deputy Managing Director, Noatum Logistics, Middle East Region, AD Ports Group, said: “We firmly believe in the transformative role that rail can play in providing our customers with a transport alternative that delivers on their key priorities, including cost-effectiveness, scalability, reliability and environmental sustainability. By combining the best of what rail and trucking
can offer, we are creating a win-win solution that benefits all market participants across our regional logistics network.”
The new rail service offers significant savings and efficiencies compared to traditional road transport, making it a compelling choice for businesses seeking to optimise their logistics operations. The service is very scalable and ideal for handling large volumes of bulk, containerised, oversized and general cargo, particularly over medium and long distances. Given that the service runs on a dedicated rail network, it is not affected by traffic conditions, road bans or tolls, thereby allowing customers to generate savings and take advantage of more reliable delivery times and predictable logistics planning. Just as importantly, thanks to its ability to combine scale with fuel efficiency, rail service emits significantly fewer CO2 emissions per-tonne of cargo moved than trucking, thereby enhancing environmental sustainability and helping clients meet their specific emission goals and mandates.
Depending on regional demand dynamics, Noatum Logistics will be able to increase the number of weekly departures for the Khalifa Port to Fujairah Terminals leg and launch new shuttle services across the broader regional rail network.
