≡ SECTION 1 - STUDY ≡ ≡ EXHIBITIONS ≡ Blindfield was a Soundscape Installation done in conjunction with the artist/ composer Francisco Lopez. Arts and Architecture students collaborated to create a truly immersive acoustic / visual space.

The piece was held in an EMPAC [Experiemental Media Performing Arts Center] blackbox theater and consisted of a composition transmitted through LED-lit fabric panels with transducers housed in MDF. The project was the first example for many students to see the immersion needed to carry a project through from initial design to final construction / installation. ≡ ENVELOPE STUDIES ≡ The “inflated” concrete wall was an experiment in breaking from conventional formwork. Instead of the usual plywood forms, plastic sheathing was put in tension by the concrete mix causing a ballooning effect. For continuity, the sheathing would then be wrapped to the interior to double as a vapor barrier. The project sought to further the understanding of material plasticity, while still maintaining basic principles of structure, aesthetics, and enclosure. ≡ EMERGENT DESIGN ≡ Under the guidance of Tom Wiscombe, designs utilizing materiality of rigid, semi-rigid, and soft materials in conjunction with emergent design methods (via Maya & ZBrush) would be the focus for the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art [MoCCA] competition. The studio emphasized the play that architecture should have and ways to translate directly from materiality experimentation to full scale structure. Many students’ projects brought the uncomfortable feeling of designing against the grain, while others were able to thrive in the discomfort of crossing into new territory. ≡ PHOTOREALISTIC RENDERING ≡ Based in 3DS Max, scenes were created for a Lighting Pattern Book under the guidance of the Lighting Research Center in Troy, NY. The book sought to show homeowners the variety of lighting patterns that different affordable technologies could bring. This was achieved through simulating lighting and advanced photometrics via 3D room layouts. Being involved with the project afforded the opportunity to take freedom and responsibility in design, while keeping a discipline in design across different phases.

≡ SECTION 2 - PRACTICE ≡ ≡ DESIGN DEVELOPMENT ≡ The Deichmanske Cultural Center was a project which sought to solve the oversight of a previously failed Library / Media Center project in Oslo, Norway. The project focuses on the concept of bridging two nodes in significant cultural proximity to the site; the train station and Oslo Opera House. By creating a slice through and gradual slope toward the Center, the focus of visitors is framed by the site. Simulation of the real design process of an architectural practice was this studio’s fundamental basis; which included design from concept to SD, through DD. ≡ COMPETITIONS ≡ The Troldekt company launched a competition asking designers to find unconventional ways in which their acoustic panels could be used. Prior winners of the competition saw the panels being used as furniture or lighting fixtures. This design looked to integrate the product as an exhibition for the public. As it rises up from the ground in Skane Park (Aarhus, Denmark), visitors are invited to design their own planters out of removable panels, take a break from the city, or enjoy an outdoor concert. The project was an endeavor in isolated design with completely open-ended parameters. ≡ THESIS ≡ “Circum-symbiotic Dwelling” was the culmination of year-long research and design based around key concepts of bio-mimicry, symbiosis, and energy use. Drawing on relationships shared by the phostosynthetic sea slug, residential housing typologies, and terrace rice farming, a concept was developed to weave localized energy production with consumption into a closed loop within the home. The project is one which still has possibility for variation and adaptation as new technologies and demands arise in the future. ≡ MODEL FABRICATION ≡ Via Coop Himmelblau in Vienna, models were developed at different project stages for the Convention Center in Baku. An over 900k square foot area with a retractable / flexible floor and stage sought to act as the central convention space for diplomats and leaders in Baku. Scale models were implemented from schematic design through construction administration as tools in the design process (via laser cutting and CNC milling). The projects afforded the capability to experience a variety of design disciplines simultaneously and to create transcendental design solutions.

≡ SECTION 3 - IMPLEMENT ≡ ≡ PROJECT ARCHIVAL ≡ The Tangeman Housing was an archival project focused on documenting existing conditions and highlighting key architectural features before later demolition. The project was an opportunity for creation of process, from time management to designing views and details. ≡ COMPLETED WORKS ≡ The Eagle Hill School in Greenwich Connecticut was an addition and alterations project which completed construction in early 2016. After demolition of an existing auditorium, a new auditorium / multi-purpose room was constructed to serve the school for music classes, plays, as well as general gatherings. The space is used not only by the school but for local community events as well.

Following in the vein of Blindfield and the Deichmanske Center, Eagle Hill School showed how architecture addresses design factors, players involved, as well as unforeseen situations which are intrinsic to a construction project. ≡ CONSTRUCTION RENDERINGS ≡ The Learning Commons and Design Lab projects for Scarsdale High School were put forth with the goal of bringing the school to the forefront of 21st Century Educational Design. What once was their main gymnasium space, the Learning Commons and associated Mezzanine level would be constructed to provide the school with a flexible meeting / groupwork / eating space. The Design Lab was a conversion from an existing Auto Shop to a renovated state of the art Technology and Workshop space. Much attention was paid to the historical and cultural significance of Scarsdale High School in designing these spaces. While keeping with traditional styles, an efficient and modern design solution was still found.
