Sound Waves and Culture Shifts: What Erasmus+ Taught Me About Media and Myself

Author: Eva Hanapy

Photography by: Culann Farrell

My name is Eva Hanaphy, and I’m currently studying radio and podcasting at City of Dublin FET College, Ballyfermot, Southwest Campus This year, I was incredibly lucky to be selected for a funded Erasmus+ mobility programme, an opportunity that took me to two countries I’d never imagined visiting: Finland and Estonia What unfolded over those few weeks abroad was nothing short of transformative, both personally and professionally

The Erasmus+ experience was far more than just a change of scenery. As a media student, I found the programme especially valuable because it focused on the growing influence of social media and digital platforms across all industries. We explored how these tools are being harnessed in innovative ways worldwide, not just to promote content, but to shape narratives, amplify voices, and build communities It was inspiring to learn from experts who are at the cutting edge of this ever-evolving landscape. Their insights gave me a whole new outlook on where the industry is heading and how I might position myself within it.

What struck me most was the global perspective Being in Finland and Estonia, two countries known for their progressive approaches to technology and education, allowed me to experience how differently things can be done, and how much we can learn from each other.

From the moment we landed, I was soaking up new ideas, approaches, and ways of thinking that challenged my assumptions and sparked new ambitions Before this, neither Finland nor Estonia were on my list of must-see places, but that’s part of what made the experience so special Discovering these countries through the Erasmus+ lens not as a tourist, but as a learner made the journey even more meaningful I had the chance to meet people from all over Europe, share stories, compare cultures, and come away with a deeper appreciation for the world outside Ireland

One of the biggest takeaways for me was how important it is to step outside your comfort zone. Ireland is a brilliant place to grow up and study, but it’s easy to forget how small our bubble can be When you get out into the wider world, your perspective shifts You start to see your own country differently, what’s working, what could change, and how you might be a part of that change It’s not always easy to be the one who starts the conversation, but I’ve learned that growth begins when you open your mind to something new.

That’s exactly what the Erasmus+ programme offers: a chance to explore, connect, and think differently It’s not just about travel, it’s about transformation I’d encourage any young person, especially those in further education, to grab an opportunity like this with both hands You never know how it might change your life or what ideas you’ll bring back with you

This experience has inspired me not only to look beyond borders but also to think more boldly about the kind of media I want to create. And for that, I’ll always be grateful to Erasmus+, and to the staff at City of Dublin FET College Ballyfermot for making it all possible.

Voices from BCFE: Erasmus Through the Eyes of Our Team

“We are delighted in BCFE to have the largest Erasmus plus project in City of Dublin Education and Training board This year we are sending approximately 70students to Malta, Finland, Spain, Germany and Portugal. Students travelling are from animation, media, business visual effects , gaming and art courses Erasmus is a life changing experience for our learners who travel abroad for a minimum of 2 weeks to work in industry led and vocationally relevant placements. Employers now value transversal skills such as communication, teamwork and autonomy- our learners develop these skills while away which makes them incredibly employable for their future careers.”

McKenna head of Erasmus

"Erasmus+ offers students an invaluable opportunity to broaden their horizons, both personally and professionally. On this recent trip, students of Content Creation and Photography, and Radio Production were able to hone their skills while attending the 2025 International Seminar on Social Media at Helsinki Business College. Immersed in a new cultural setting, they gained practical experience and fresh perspectives on digital storytelling and communication. I always encourage students to take full advantage of Erasmus+ during their studies, it’s a chance to grow, connect, and learn in ways that extend far beyond the classroom "

Inspiring Altitudes: FWIA 2024 Elevates Future

Female Aviators

The skies were filled with inspiration as over 2,000 students from 40 schools across Ireland tuned in to the Future of Women in Aviation (FWIA) Webinar 2024 an incredible celebration of female achievement, ambition, and opportunity in aviation.

Hosted for the third year by Aviation Skillnet and the Irish Centre for Business Excellence (ICBE), the webinar brought together a stellar lineup of nine industry-leading speakers, each with a unique story and pathway to share. From air traffic control and engineering to military aviation and leadership, the speakers illuminated the breadth of roles available and the real-life journeys behind them

The event was designed not only to inform but to empower It spotlighted the message that there is a place for everyone especially young women in the ever-evolving world of aviation. Key themes included breaking barriers, embracing mentorship, and the power of saying “ yes ” to new challenges

Among the organisations delighted to take part was TY Hub, a platform dedicated to opening doors for Transition Year students nationwide. TY Hub was thrilled to support this powerful initiative, which aligns perfectly with its mission to spark curiosity and help students explore diverse career pathways

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, events like FWIA are playing a critical role in ensuring that the future is inclusive, dynamic, and accessible. The FWIA Webinar 2024 was more than just an online event it was a launchpad for dreams and a reminder that the sky is not the limit; it’s only the beginning

A Soaring Day of Discovery at Shannon Aviation Museum

A sunny afternoon out of the office turned into an inspiring and educational experience for Maeve O'Neill and Kumar Kaneswaran as they joined Transition Year students from Presentation Secondary School, Mitchelstown, Co Cork, on their visit to Shannon Aviation Museum.

The school earned this exciting opportunity after participating in the Future of Women in Aviation (FWIA) webinar earlier this year an initiative aimed at encouraging more young women to explore aviation careers As part of their prize, the students were treated to a day filled with discovery and inspiration.

Proudly sponsored by Aviation Skillnet, the visit gave students an immersive introduction to the world of aviation. The day included a guided tour of the museum, where they explored aviation history and innovation, followed by an engaging presentation from David Ward of Atlantic Aviation Group. David shared valuable insights into the aviation apprenticeship programme, giving students a clear look at the career pathways available within the industry

A highlight for many was the chance to try out the museum ’ s flight simulator an unforgettable, hands-on experience that brought the magic of flight to life!

A huge thank you to Jane Magill and the dedicated team at Shannon Aviation Museum for hosting such a well-organised, fun, and informative day. Events like this play a vital role in sparking curiosity and ambition among the next generation of aviation professionals and this one truly took flight.

Logistics, Learning & Lift-Off –

TYHub Joins the Action at

LogisTYcs

TYHub was absolutely thrilled to be back at the LogisTYcs event in the Curragh – and this year’s edition was bigger, better, and even more exciting than before! Organised by the Department of Transport, this fantastic initiative is now in its second year and once again proved just how powerful it is when schools and industry come together under one roof.

From the moment the event kicked off, the energy was electric. We had the pleasure of speaking with so many of our amazing students and teachers – some we’ve known for a while, and some new faces joining the TYHub community for the first time. It was a real celebration of connection, conversation, and career discovery.

This was no ordinary careers event – LogisTYcs 2025 was gamified and packed with hands-on, high-energy experiences that brought the world of transport and logistics to life in a way that truly captured imaginations. Students had the chance to win a Mondello Driving Experience, test their reflexes and decision-making with the Virtual Driving Hub, and climb into virtual cabs of trucks and heavy machinery for an unforgettable experience behind the wheel.

It wasn’t just about fun and games though – it was about futures. The logistics and transport industries are evolving rapidly, and events like this give students a firsthand look at just how exciting and promising this sector really is. From cutting-edge technology to global supply chain roles, the opportunities are vast and growing.

We were also delighted to sit down with some incredible people working in the industry to gather insights, stories, and advice for the next generation. These exclusive interviews will be released soon on the TYHub Let's Talk Podcast – so stay tuned for some inspiring conversations that give students a deeper look into life in logistics and transport.

A huge thank you to the Department of Transport for having us back again this year and for creating such a powerful platform for connection and discovery. TYHub is proud to support initiatives that open doors and minds – and we can’t wait to share even more from this event in the weeks ahead.

The future is moving fast – and TYHub is right there with it.

6 Health & Fitness Tips to Help Students Stay Sharp for Exam Season

I know from experience when you're in aviation, whether you're studying or on the tools, your brain is constantly switched on. Exams just add another layer of pressure. The workload, the stress, the temptation to live off caffeine and fast food... it’s a tough phase, and your energy can take a serious hit if you’re not careful.

I work with aircraft technicians, engineers, pilots etc helping them stay fit, healthy, and mentally switched on through the challenges of the job (and the exam halls). So here are six simple things I’d recommend to keep your body and brain firing on all cylinders during exam season:

1. Drink More Water Than You Think You Need

It sounds basic, but most students are low-key dehydrated all the time Water affects everything from memory to mood. Aim for at least 2 litres a day especially if you ’ re smashing coffees to stay awake. Keep a bottle with you while studying and refill it like it’s part of your checklist.

2. Don’t Sacrifice Sleep for Study

You’re not going to retain anything if you ’ re surviving on 4–5 hours of broken sleep. Your brain consolidates memory when you ' re resting. Try to get 7–9 hours each night, and if you ’ ve had a rough one, even a 20minute nap can bring your focus back online.

3. Move Your Body Every Day

You don’t need to hit the gym for hours. Even a 20-minute walk or bodyweight workout can do wonders for stress and mental focus. Movement clears your head, boosts energy, and keeps you from getting stiff after hours at the books

6 Health & Fitness Tips to Help Students Stay Sharp for Exam Season

4. Choose Smart Snacks

What you eat massively affects how you feel. Skip the sugar bombs they’ll spike your energy and leave you crashing mid-revision. Instead, go for snacks with protein, fats, and slow carbs: think boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, fruit with nuts, or rice cakes with peanut butter

5. Don’t Rely on Caffeine to Survive

I get it sometimes that 3rd or 4th coffee feels necessary. But overdoing it will just make you wired, anxious, and ruin your sleep. Keep your caffeine to the morning or early afternoon, and pair it with a walk or break instead of using it to power through burnout.

6. Stay Connected

Studying can feel isolating, but mental health takes a hit when you shut everyone out. Even a quick chat, group study session, or walk with a mate can reset your head. I always say you ’ re not a machine. Stay human, and don’t be afraid to lean on your support network.

Final Thoughts:

Whether you're studying for your Junior Cert, Leaving Cert, EASA modules, ATPL theory, or your first maintenance qualification — looking after your body helps your brain show up properly. And when you're running on good energy, confidence comes easier.

Good luck with your exams and if you ever need support beyond the books, you know where to find me.

What is the SkyBound Fund?

At TYHub and AvCon, we believe every student deserves a cha extraordinary regardless of where they live or what their scho why we ’ ve launched the SkyBound Fund: a brand-new initiative that helps schools cover transport costs to attend free educational events like AvCon – The Future of Aviation We know that transport costs can be a major barrier. The SkyBound Fund exists to make sure that no school misses out on the opportunity to engage in hands-on, career-focused learning experiences This is currently very limited, and as we grow the more schools we can help.

What’s the Dare to Dream Flight Challenge?

To help grow the SkyBound Fund and give students a chance to aim high (literally), we ’ re launching the Dare to Dream Flight Challenge a student-led fundraising campaign with an incredible reward This summer, selected students who take part will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to FLY A PLANE thanks to our amazing flight school partners.

Here’s How It Works:

Students apply to take part in the challenge

Why I’m avoiding uploading my image to the AI doll generator Hidden Risks of Sharing Images with AI Generators

April 15, 2025

It’s all the craze at the moment your friends suddenly shrunk into pocket-sized versions of themselves on social media?

It’s the latest AI trend people are using tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to turn themselves into tiny action figures, doll-style avatars, and even miniature collectibles. Cute? Definitely. But let’s talk about what’s hiding in the background

Let’s be honest AI image tools are amazing. You upload a picture, type a few prompts, and suddenly you ’ ve got an image, a cartoon version of your dog, or a dreamy travel background with zero Photoshop skills.

But here’s what we ’ re not talking about enough: What happens to that image after you hit “upload”? And more importantly what did you accidentally share in the process?

We’re entering an era where AI tools are everywhere. They’re in our phones, our classrooms, our creative tools, and our social media feeds And while they unlock a world of creativity and convenience, they also open the door to real privacy risks especially when we ’ re uploading images that include faces, children, locations, or background details we don’t even notice.

If you ’ ve ever uploaded a family photo to “make it Pixar-style,” or tried one of those “AI yearbook” trends, or even dropped an image into ChatGPT to get help with something this one ’ s for you

So let’s explore:

What you might be unknowingly sharing when you upload a photo

Why metadata matters (and how to remove it)

The risks of facial recognition and identity theft

How to safely use AI image tools without oversharing

Because here’s the thing: ju ge doesn’t mean you should.

What You’re Really Sharing When You Upload a Photo

Most people think they’re just uploading a simple image but here’s what might be embedded in that file:

Faces and identities: AI can detect and process faces even in group photos or backgrounds

Sensitive backgrounds: A school logo on a uniform, a child’s bedroom, or a home address on an envelope in the background it’s all data.

Metadata (EXIF data): Many photos from phones contain hidden data like your GPS location, the exact date and time it was taken, and even what device you used.

If someone wanted to track you, images are often easier to exploit than text.

AI Doesn’t “Forget” the Way Humans Do

When you upload an image into an AI tool especially one that doesn’t clearly state its privacy practices it might:

Store your image on a server

Use it to train future AI models

Share data with third parties or advertisers

Even if the AI tool says it “anonymizes” the image, that doesn’t mean the data is gone In many cases, your image could live on long after you ’ ve forgotten about it.

The Risks: From Identity Theft to Misuse of Children’s Photos

Here’s where it gets serious especially for parents

Facial recognition: Some tools can scan, store, and match faces with online profiles creating a digital fingerprint you didn’t intend to give.

AI misuse: Images of children or teens could be altered, cloned, or misused in unethical ways even becoming part of deepfakes.

Consent issues: If you s image, have they consented to that imag

This is why many privacy e otos of children to any AI-powered tool even “ju

How to Stay Safe While Still Using AI Tools

You don’t have to stop using AI image generators entirely but you do need to be smart about it. Here's how:

Strip metadata before uploading (tools like Image Scrubber or online EXIF removers can help).

Blur or crop out identifiable features like faces, names, or backgrounds

Avoid uploading photos of children or anyone who hasn't given informed consent. Check the privacy policy of any AI tool. If it says your data may be used for “training,” that’s a red flag

Use local or offline tools if you ' re doing sensitive work some apps let you use AI without uploading to the cloud

Final Thought: Share Smarter, Not Just Faster

AI tools are here to stay and they can be fun, powerful, and incredibly useful But in our rush to play with the latest tech, let’s not forget the basics: Your images tell a story and sometimes, that story says more than you think.

Before you upload, take a pause. Ask: Is there anything in this image I wouldn’t want shared publicly or stored forever?

If the answer ’ s yes, maybe it’s better to keep it offline Found this article useful please give it a share and if you'd like to collaborate or work with me drop me an email: HIMSELF@waynedenner com
