retention pond south of the Willowbridge Shopping Centre had to be cleaned and treated after a recent sewage spill. This came after another sewage spill at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, which led to a contravention notice being served on the shopping centre earlier this year, as confirmed by them. On enquiry by TygerBurger, Siyabulela
Mamkeli, Mayco member for Area Central, confirmed the sewage spill at Willowbridge had occurred on 13 March. According to Lizelle Louw, marketing manager at Willowbridge, the shopping centre immediately informed the City, which upon investigation found a sewage blockage on municipal property on the corner of Old Oak Road and Carl Cronje Drive. “This caused an overflow into the stormwater system and ended up in the pond,” she said.
According to Louw, the sewage blockage was cleared by the City and all the contaminated water and debris in the pond was pumped into the closest sewerage manhole before any contaminated water could flow into the Elsieskraal River. Mamkeli further said the spillage at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre “was a separate matter previously investigated and addressed”. That problem was caused when a sewer connection was linked to a stormwater pipe
on site at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, he said. “After an investigation, the problem was identified and Tyger Valley Centre was issued with a contravention notice by the City’s Wastewater Inspectorate to rectify the problem within 14 days. “The management rectified the connection and complied within the stipulated timeframe,” he said.
