apes, assaults, domestic violence and even a hammer attack. This is the grim picture you discover when investigating the alarming incidents of violence in Site 5. The informal settlement situated opposite Dunoon has been the cause of concern among Table View police for several months now due to high assault rates in the area. According to the City of Cape Town during the most recent count in 2013, there were 2415 households in this small area, but ac-
cording to police, it contributes a total of 38% to the assault rate in the entire police precinct. At the root of the problem is alcohol abuse. Throughout the year, police have tried to engage the community by organising awareness workshops, however, on two occasions, the community failed to show up. On Saturday police held their third workshop and breathed a sigh of relief when just under 20 people pitched up. Speaking at the event, police spokesperson Captain Adriana Chandler explained she was relieved that some residents showed
an interest in addressing the problem. “We have a big problem with domestic violence and assaults and in all these cases the perpetrators are known to the victims. We are here to inform you of your rights and what can be done if you find yourselves in these situations.” During a question and answer session residents reveal a trend of family cover-ups when a child is assaulted or raped. According to one of the women, there have been incidents where a child is harmed and families opt to deal with the matter themselves by punishing the perpetrator themselves.
Police, however, advised that the actions of the individual remain criminal and the only way to ensure another child is not hurt is for the matter to be reported. Chandler says while assaults have been a concern for police for some time now, the amount of cases reported in Site 5 have decreased during July and August. She confirms there are a number of cases where excessive force is used. In addition perpetrators are known to arm themselves with knives or glass bottle necks to stab victims. V To page 2.
