SMUGGLING: MASSIVE ILLEGAL CIGARETTE HAUL UNCOVERED IN BRACKENFELL

I

llegal cigarettes with a street value of R1 million were seized when police busted two foreign nationals in Brackenfell on Wednesday last week.

“Members from the Cape Town Dog Unit responded to information on a safari tour truck that had crossed the border from Zimbabwe into South Africa the previous day and was en route to Brackenfell industria,” said Brackenfell police station spokesperson Warrant Officer Erica Crous.

It was initially suspected that an endangered species were in transport.

Members arrived at the warehouse in Silver Park Okavango Industria at about 20:30,

where they found the truck and two men.

“Upon thoroughly searching the truck they found a false compartment between the floor and luggage storage area. This stretched from the back to the front of the truck and was filled with cartons of illicit and illegal cigarettes. A toilet in the warehouse also contained numerous boxes filled with cartons of illegal cigarettes,” said Crous.

The two suspects, a Zimbabwean man and a Jordanian national were arrested and 4 600 cartons of illegal cigarettes seized.

According to Francois van der Merwe, CEO of the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (TISA), the Pacific brand of cigarette – which was confiscated in this case– is manufactured in Zimbabwe and widely sold in Cape Town, but is not necessarily illegal.

“Pacific is legally imported and traded in South Africa, but there has been instances where it was smuggled into the country and sold illegally,” he said.

“Historically, illicit cigarettes have been smuggled into South Africa from neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zimbabwe, as well as China and the United Arab Emirates.

Currently, the majority, approximately 55%, of illicit cigarettes are produced and distributed by manufacturers within South Africa,” he said.

TISA defines illicit trade as the supply and sale of smuggled or counterfeit tobacco products, on which the necessary duties and taxes have not been paid.

FROM PAGE 1 “To avoid the payment of cigarette excise taxes, which are currently R12.42 on a pack of 20 cigarettes, some manufacturers do not declare total production. They only pay taxes on a certain portion of their production,” says van der Merwe.

He says the main external sources at the moment are manufacturers in Zimbabwe (approx 30%) and Botswana (approx 5%), who utilise complex illegal supply chains and concealment methods.

“These products enter through porous borders with both Zimbabwe and Botswana,” he says.

According to data compiled by TISA, South Africa is rated amongst the top five countries globally with the highest incidence of trade in illegal cigarettes.

“In 2013, an estimated 31% of all cigarettes consumed in South Africa were illicit. This equals one million packs of 20 smoked per day. In 2014 and 2015 this number was around 23%. It destabilises markets through the undermining of legitimate distributers and retailers and undermines brand equity,” he says In terms of impact on the fiscus, more than

R22 billion in tax revenue has been lost to the illicit cigarette trade since 2010.

More worrisome, it exposes consumers to unregulated products and packaging with inappropriate health warnings and dubious tar and nicotine disclosures.

It also encourages criminality as it is often a front for other illicit activities such as human trafficking and drug smuggling. It also funds organised crime and terrorism in other parts of Africa.

“Die grasmatte is besig om op te lig, wat dit baie moeilik maak om die rolstoele daaroor te stoot. Die speeltoerusting is verroes en handvatsels wat as stoppers dien, is afgeruk,” sê Laurie.

Volgens Laurie het baie van die kinders wat van die park gebruik gemaak het, nog nooit voorheen dié voorreg gehad nie.

“Daar was nog nooit so ’n park vir gestremde kinders in die noordelike voorstede nie en veral die kleintjies was uit hulle velle wanneer hulle die park besoek het.

“Hul nie-gestremde sibbe kon ook saam met hulle op die apparate speel. Dis hartseer om by die ouers te hoor hoe ongelukkig hulle nou is. Met die park in die toestand wat dit tans is, is dit moeilik en selfs gevaarlik om al die apparate met sukses te gebruik,” sê sy.

Ook die gestremde kinders by die Paarlskool kon die park tydens pouses en ná skool gebruik.

Carin Brynard, die wyksraadslid wie die projek ’n paar jaar gelede van stapel gestuur het, het haar teleurstelling verlede week uitgespreek.

“Dit was ’n toetslopie en ons het geleer uit ons foute. Die kontrakteurs wat deur die Stad aangestel is, moes apparaat ontwerp en vervaardig wat nog nooit voorheen gedoen is nie,” sê sy.

CPF combats growth in crime DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

I

n the little over four months since taking office, the new Brackenfell Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive committee has moved mountains, but now needs the local business sector to assist.

Chairman Sean McCleland says exponential development in the region has resulted in an influx of residents and businesses, but also an increase in crime.

“More people are moving to the northern suburbs thanks to the more competitive property prices. The local economy is therefore growing and wealth is shifting,” he says.

However, these are all factors that contribute to an increase in crime.

In an effort to effectively buffer increase rates of crime, the CPF has for the first time managed to bring all 12 local neighbourhood watches under one umbrella.

“This cooperation was necessary,” he says.

Uniformity A standard operating procedure was drawn up to ensure uniformity across the neighbourhood watches and two forums were introduced.

“All the neighbourhood watches are registered to Bolobook and sign in to Zello radio services,” he says.

The term “Bolo” is the internationally accepted abbreviation for “Be on the Lookout”.

“This unique online network gives security organisations, groups and its members the opportunity to interact via social media to report incidents, warn others, place

alerts and generally be on the lookout,” he explains.

Weekly crime trends can also be analysed so that preventative measures can be put in place.

In turn, Zello provides back-up to all neighbourhood watch patrollers.

“In essence this is a free ‘walkie talkie’ app that links you with a 24-hour control room, which in turn is linked up to every state department countrywide,” explains McCleland.

Increased attendance The local arm is called Brackenfell Concerned Citizens.

The above-mentioned developments, have led to an increase in the number of people attending monthly CPF meetings.

“At our first public meeting in February, we had 12 members of the public in attendance, while more than a 100 people showed up at our meeting in June.”

McCleland says the CPF is now in the process of aligning itself with local business to strengthen its functions.

“Much remains to be done. We desperately need our own control room in Brackenfell for instance, but to do this, funding is needed via local business,” he says.

He describes the association between the CPF and local business as a mutually beneficial relationship.

“From a security standpoint, everyone in town benefits – residents and business. We welcome any citizen or business that wants to participate in creating a better Brackenfell for everyone.”

social welfare organisation showed its compassion for children when it arranged a winter camp for mostly homeless kids last week.

Hewlin Compassion’s Hewitt de Jager, told TygerBurger more about the camp which was held from 14 to 17 July and included teenagers from Durbanville, Kraaifontein, Brackenfell, Athlone and Delft.

“We’ve worked with homeless people in the northern suburbs for the past three years. Among them are children – under 18,” said Hewitt.

“So we decided to take 30 of them on this camp.”

Hewitt said the camp’s theme was “Crossroads: What to do when you don’t know what to do.”

The camp was held at the Princessvlei Eco Adventure Centre in Diep River.

“Our facilitators consisted of social workers, community leaders and pastors,” he said.

Hewitt said their programmes ranged

from life skills sessions to self-worth, creativity, team work, problem-solving and decision-making, among others.

Among the various activities the children enjoyed were playing tag, building a bonfire and sharing their experiences during the group sessions.

“The kids had three meals per day, loads of snacks in between, and lots of games to play with. They each got two blankets and a sleeping bag, each had their own bed and own bag of toiletries with a face cloth and towel,” he said.

Hewlin Compassion serves as a member on the board of the Western Cape Streets Children’s Forum. The forum will be partnering with them during their annual “Amazing GRace” event on 10 October, in celebration of World Homeless Day, Hewitt said.

“It is where community members enter the race and travel between organisations – orphanages, shelters, old age homes, and so forth – and render a service at each organisation.”

A

rmed robbers hit employees of a woodwork supply factory in Stikland over the head, then robbed the establishment of laptops and cellphones.

The incident happened last Tuesday at the Chipboard Cafe in the industrial area when two men entered the premises just after opening time.

The factory is in Cecil Morgan Road near the R300 highway and Bottelary Road and is not known for armed robberies.

So says Edrich Engelbrecht, one of the company directors.

“This is the first time I hear of such a robbery in this area. With the economy being what it is, people come to look for jobs all the time. There was nothing strange about it,” said Engelbrecht.

“These guys knew most of the staff would not be there yet.”

Engelbrecht said his colleague, Johan Oosthuizen, usually opens the factory.

“I wasn’t there. Johan had just opened up and the machines were switched on to warm up, when two guys appeared,” he said.

The two asked if there were any jobs available and Johan told them go around to the front. He and a salesman as well as five factory workers were there at the time, said Engelbrecht.

“Then they pulled out the rifles. They took laptops, cellphones, watches, that sort of thing. They also had the safe opened and took whatever was inside.”

The robbers fled.

“They didn’t have time to consider taking the guys’ wallets too.”

The police and emergency services personnel arrived a short while later and trauma counselling was offered to the workers involved, with the two injured employees being taken away for treatment.

Funding invitation to NGOs The City of Cape Town’s social development and early childhood development directorate is inviting applications for grants-inaid to the tune of R2 million.

Wine fest benefits Pebbles Project

W

ine lovers in Cape Town’s northern suburbs can look forward to the third We Love Wine Festival at CapeGate Shopping Centre on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 August.

About 20 wineries will present more than 100 wines for tasting and for sale, directly from the producers. A wide selection to suit every palate and wallet, ranging from red, white, dry and sweet, through to Port, bubbly and pot-still brandy, is on offer. Wineries participating include some of the large producers with well-known brands, to smaller boutique and family-owned wineries, giving festival-goers a taste of the best of South Africa’s winelands in one venue.

A new addition to the event is the free wine theatre inside the festival venue, hosted

by The Cape Wine Academy. All visitors are welcome to join the programme of fun tastings and pairings at set times during opening hours. Entry is free with a festival ticket.

“A

big ‘thump!’,” is what Gerald de Bruyn heard when a car hit a hawk on Sunday.

He saw the entire incident, from when the VW Golf hit the low-flying bird, to the windscreen wiper coming off, to the owner stopping, picking up the wiper blade and speeding off again, swearing.

De Bruyn very gently took the bird out, its nostrils still covered in dried blood and its one eye bloody and swollen shut, to show TygerBurger.

He had built the bird a makeshift bed and soft shelter in a contraption resembling a trolley, but not quite.

From the middle of the resident milk crate, De Bruyn, who is homeless, took the bird out.

“He was much wilder yesterday when I found him,” he explained as the bird, with its feet loosely tied, snapped at his hands.

“If I could have the opportunity to name it, I’d call it Pure White. Not because it’s white, but because it is innocent,” he said.

“That driver of the Golf had no idea what kind of bird he hit. It is a hawk. You don’t just hit a hawk and drive off. I saw it and immediately scooped it up,” said De Bruyn.

De Bruyn brought the bird to the shop in Bellville’s CBD on Monday where he normally goes to sell bric-a-brac given to him by residents.

Not sure what to do, the owner of the shop in Kort Street, Steven Erasmus, proceeded to call TygerBurger in an effort to find out who best to contact.

The bird had a tag from the University of Cape Town (UCT) tied around its foot.

Professor Peter Ryan of UCT’s Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology told TygerBurger the bird might belong to Safring, a national bird-ringing unit that tracks birds’ movements and survival on a national database.

“It is most likely a black sparrowhawk or a peregrine (falcon),” he said at the time.

“But it is definitely not my bird.”

TygerBurger alerted the Cape of Good Hope SPCA which in turn arranged for a nearby emergency vehicle to fetch the bird.

The driver, Farrent Dlula, was at a nearby branch of the Tygerberg Animal Hospital and made his way to the CBD to collect the animal.

“The case will be referred to our wildlife department and taken to Grassy Park,” he said.

Abomlambo Youth Development and Asquared Theatre Company, along with Brackenfell High School’s theatre department, were among the top 16 finalists.

The festival saw 60 Western Cape schools competing.

With their play Ons is oor dit!/We’re over it!, the young Brackenfellers communicated they’ve moved beyond apartheid.

Die inwoners kla ook oor die afwesigheid van polisiëring in hul omgewing.

In ’n onverwante voorval vroeër vandeesweek is nege buitelanders en ’n Suid-Afrikaner aan die onderkant van Leeukop in Kaapstad beroof. Humbled by kind gesture On the coldest, wettest morning the past week I noticed what I thought was a drunk old man in our warm waiting room. He sat there, soaking wet, swinging from side to side, his head on his chest. I was annoyed and called two of our workers to escort him out as he obviously was not a client of ours. They gently took him by the arms, stepping over the pool of urine by his feet.

What happened next humbled me. These workers, earning a very small salary and being quite poor themselves, literally took the clothes off their own back to replace his soaked clothing. I felt ashamed. He was given warm coffee and a blanket. In the end, he was taken to the police station, as he did not know how he got to us. In hindsight, he might have been ill and not drunk at all.

What a humbling experience. I drop my head in shame, but have learnt yet another life lesson.

Petty rulings make life miserable Cluster housing appears to be one solution to living less expensively and safely in trying times. Unfortunately home owners’ associations are part of the deal. From experience I have come to realise that petty decisions made by trustees can make life very miserable for home owners.

Many of these frustrated ladies and/or gentlemen appear to derive pleasure from finding (and consequently fining the culprit) a dirt bin outside the fence after a day, cutting off the branches of a yellow wood tree (which might be so arrogant as to be growing its own way) and breaking up cement paving built to park a

dirt bin.

Trustees, for crying out loud, please be more concerned with home owners’ happiness and safety, than deriving pleasure from a minute deviation from petty house rules!

FRUSTRATED HOME OWNER E­mail

Plattekloof rock throwing warning My tale of woe comes after driving home on Plattekloof Road towards Panorama hospital. Late at night, after night shift, approximately 500m before the hospital I heard a thud under my car but saw nothing in the road.

That was about three months ago. Last month while driving home I heard the loudest bang ever. I did not know what it was and kept on driving for about 300m before stopping and getting out to looked around my Opel bakkie and found a huge dent in the left door. Feeling a bit nervous, I carried on home.

The next day driving past I saw half a brick in the gutter of the road that matched what had gashed my door.

I’ve been too busy to report it to the cops, but during the following weeks the pile of rocks and glass grew next to the same spot where I was hit so I imagine it is the same modus operandi of either naughty kids or attempted hijacking should you stop to see what has happened to your car. So be warned.

Pedestrian bridge on N7 long overdue Re: “Residents call for footbridge”, TB Durbanville, 8 July: For two years I have been driving that route and have always seen pedestrians running over the N7. I am sure it has been happening for many years prior. How come it has not been

sorted out sooner? The pedestrians should have been prevented from crossing the N7 and a footbridge built when the problem arose about ten years ago. The death of a pedestrian and the consequential traffic delays could have been avoided if the correct action was taken then. Why can we not think pro-actively and first wait till someone dies before reacting?

You ask for possible solutions but as far as I am concerned the decision makers do not respond to the normal law abiding citizen’s suggestions and ideas.

Vragmotors hoort nie in noodbaan Ek gebruik daagliks die Otto du Plessis-rylaan en is verbaas dat vragmotors toegelaat word om die noodbaan en sypaadjie tussen Paardeneiland-rylaan en Milnerstraat te gebruik as ’n gratis parkeerarea.

Van hierdie vragmotors neem nie aankomende verkeer in ag wanneer hulle hul “parkeerarea” verlaat nie en menige maak ’n U-draai by Milnerstraat om terug te draai na die hawe, weer eens sonder om aankomende verkeer in ag te neem.

Op donker wintersoggende is dit ook ’n probleem met die toename in voetgangers wat die bane oorsteek, veral naby die Caltex-motorhawe. Ek kan nie help om te wonder of die padverspoelings tydens die reënseisoen nie ook veroorsaak word deur die vragmotors wat die sypaadjies beskadig nie.

Elke vyf jaar gaan stemme op en word opgetree teen politieke partye wat hulle verkiesingsplakkate teen lamppale in Otto du Plessis-rylaan oprig, omdat dit die natuurskoon belemmer.

Bring maar die plakkate, want slegter as die klomp vragmotors kan die “scenic” roete nie lyk nie.

Met een arm maak hy naam in kuns ESMÉ ERASMUS

et ’n motto om nie moed op te gee en homself te “push” sover hy kan, is ’n kunstenaar van Durbanville ondanks die gebruik van net een arm besig om opgang te maak met sy beeldhoukuns.

Henry Haarhoff (61) was net 23 jaar oud toe sy regterskouer en arm in ’n motorfietsongeluk in Boston, Bellville beskadig is. Al die senuwees is uit die rugmurg geruk en dokters wou sy arm afsit.

Hy het egter gekies om sy arm te behou, hoewel hy geen gevoel daarin en geen gebruik daarvan het nie.

Hoewel hy daagliks pyn ervaar en medikasie gebruik weens chroniese inflammasie, is hy nie ’n dag spyt oor sy besluit om sy arm te behou nie.

“Dis asof jy jou jou arm in kookolie druk, só intens is die pyn. Maar dit kom in vlae,” vertel hy, terwyl hy tydens die onderhoud by sy huis in Amanda Glen eers die dooie arm se hand in sy heup stut, en dan weer in sy broeksak druk.

Studies Hy was pas klaar met sy weermagopleiding en ná sy studies in landbounavorsing aan die Pretoriase Technikon pas aangestel as assistent-wynmaker by Welmoed-kelders op die Stellenbosse wynroete. Dié wynmaakdroom was vir eers aan skerwe.

“Ek was baie sportief – ek het goed rugby gespeel, geswem en geduik. Toe ek na vier maande uit die hospitaal by die huis kom, kon ek nie my skoenveters vasmaak nie. Ek het gevoel ek het geen ‘purpose in life’ nie.

“Ek moes besluit of ek in die veilige kokon van my gestremdheid gaan bly en of ek gaan aangaan met my lewe. Alles is ’n ‘hurdle’ om te ‘cross’. Elke keer as ek iets probeer buite die norm vir mense soos ek, is daar die kans dat ek dit nie kan regkry nie en die emosio-

Hy het toe begin werk as fotograaf, veral as modefotograaf vir Topmod en later ander agentskappe.

“Ek moes als met een hand doen – die kamera vashou, zoom, fokus en afneem. Dit was voor die dae van digitale kameras. Met my een hand in my broeksak gedruk, terwyl ek met die ander foto’s neem, het mense dikwels gedink ek is baie arrogant.”

By ’n troue het ’n omie hom eenkeer aangepraat en gesê hy moet tog net sy hand uit sy broeksak haal, vertel hy.

Hy het vir sowat agt jaar foto’s geneem, maar dit was later nie meer ’n uitdaging nie.

“Elke keer as ek iets nuuts aanpak, moet ek eers kyk of ek dit kán doen.” Hy het onder

meer landbounavorsing gedoen vir Stellenbosch Farmers Winery en toe dit nie meer ’n uitdaging gebied het nie, sy eie onderneming in die wynbedryf begin.

Twee jaar gelede het ’n vriendin, Diederi Opperman-Lippstreu, dogter van die digter D.J. Opperman, hom gevra om ’n brons-borsbeeld van haar pa te maak.

Hy het op 20 jaar ’n bronsbeeld van ’n kind gemaak, maar dit was die borsbeeld van D.J. Opperman wat hom laat besef het hy kán.

“Dit was ’n gesukkel, maar dit het my vertroue gegee dat ek dit wél kan doen.”

Borsbeeld Toe volg die borsbeeld van Hennie Bosman, wat onthul is met die 50ste bestaansvie-

ringe van dié karateskool. Bosman se vuiste is oorgroot om die gevoel van sy krag as karateman oor te dra.

Ná die borsbeeld van Opperman, wou hy eksperimenteer of hy beweging sou kon weergee en het hy ’n diskusgooier geskep.

“Met elke beeld moet ek eers ’n staalraam sweis. Sonder ’n arm moet ek alles eers vooraf beplan en ‘uitdink’ van presies hoe ek dit gaan doen. Soms moet ek ’n voet inspan en goed met my tone vasknyp ... of met my mond.”

Nadat ’n kunstenaarsvriend, Conrad Theys, die Opperman-beeld gesien het, is hy bo ander bekende beeldhouers gekies om ’n brons-borsbeeld van dr. Allan Boesak te maak. Dit word op 11 Augustus by ’n NG Sendingkerk in Bellville-Suid onthul. Beslis ’n stempel van goedkeuring van sy talent!

Hy is nou besig met ’n reeks van drie beelde om die tema van die mens se vraagstuk oor die lewe te versinnebeeld. “In ’n stadium raak ’n beeld vir my ’n persoon en dis ’n ongelooflike gevoel om met ’n identiteit te werk,” vertel hy.

“Sekere ‘disabilities’ sit meer in jou kop.

Ek glo as jy iets eers in jou kop kan formuleer, kan jy dit doen. Jou hand is net ’n verlenging van jou brein. Dis in jou brein dat die dinge gebeur.

“Daar is net een ding wat ek nie kan doen nie en dis ‘push ups’. Dis eers as jy opgee, dat jy die stryd verloor, vertel hy.

Dis met hierdie geloof dat hy onlangs ook ’n Willy’s Jeep van 1953 gerestoureer het. Hy het die voertuig tweekeer uitmekaar gehaal tot hy tevrede was.

Hy het ook kleiduif geskiet, radiobeheerde vliegtuie gebou en gevlieg, die pragtige houtmeubels in sy voorhuis gemaak en ’n barshou op die muurbalbaan gespeel.

Hy het beslis die pa’s wat destyds, toe hy nog by meisies vlerkgesleep het, gemeen het hy “gaan dit nie met een arm maak nie”, verkeerd bewys.

Fish fun casts a serious hook With the rules of the day including stealing fish, exaggerating about the size of your catch and kissing your first fish of the day, the second Miggie Challenge was great fun.

The Miggie Challenge held at Phisantekraal dam outside Durbanville, was initiated in 2014 to celebrate the life of Stefan “Miggie” King from Brackenfell.

Miggie, a hero in fishing circles, lost the battle against Cystic Fibrosis in 2014 at the age of 21.

The competition aims to promote Cystic Fibrosis awareness and organ donation.

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects internal organs and there is currently no cure for the disease.

All monies from the competition go to helping those who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and similar life-threatening diseases.

ocal filmmakers are thrilled that a South African feature film has won awards at two international film award ceremonies.

The local film Born to Win scooped the Golden Crown Award for Best Evangelistic Feature Film at the International Christian Visual Media Conference (ICVM 2015) in Orlando, USA on 27 June, only three weeks after winning the Adam Award for Best Feature Film at the Sabaoth International Film Festival in Milan, Italy. It also won the Bronze Crown Award for Best Feature Drama.

Frans Cronjé from Brackenfell, who also produced the hit movie Faith Like Potatoes, and Cobus van den Berg from Eversdal, producer of the equally successful Klein Karoo, teamed up to produce this Frans Cronjé movie which was released in August last year.

The film was written and directed by Cronjé, produced by Van den Berg and wholly filmed in George.

ou know you are doing the right thing, when your work is named the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative in the dairy industry worldwide!

Fair Cape Cares Initiative won the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative category in the World Dairy Innovation Awards, announced in Amsterdam as part of the 9th Global Dairy Congress.

This award recognised the project Fair Cape Dairies is running for Operation Smile.

The cap of each bottle of milk Fair Cape produces is printed with information about the project. The caps are recycled and the money generated funds cleft palate and cleft lip operations They have also funded collection bins in shopping malls and schools, and a number of companies have taken up the challenge and collect plastic bottle caps.

Among the most enthusiastic is Janu van Deventer, a Grade 1 learner at Eversdal Primary School.

When the school asked the learners to

bring bottle caps for Operation Smile, Janu asked his family to keep all their bottle caps for him to take to school.

His grandfather in Clanwilliamn even started paying homeless people to collect bottle caps at the municipal dump. The caps are then washed, sorted by colour and packed in bags. They are now almost at their 10 000 mark!

Fair Cape Dairies was also a finalist in the Best Environmental Sustainability Initiative category.

This accolade was for the water recycling system. Every effort is made to avoid polluting the groundwater and water used to clean the milking parlour is recycled and the solid waste removed and used to fertilise the land, thus cutting down on the use of chemical fertilisers.

The competition was fierce, with the judging panel considering almost 220 entries from 30 countries in 18 categories.

The company was the only South African dairy to achieve recognition in this year’s awards.

Tablets installed in ambulances across the metro appear to have made emergency medics a target for criminals.

Three sources in the industry, who do not want to be identified as they are not contractually permitted to speak to the media, say robberies and attacks have spiked over the last few months, especially in Mitchell’s Plain, Manenberg, Hanover Park and Khayelitsha.

They believe the spike coincides with the installation of tablet devices which link medics to the call centre and provide directions to the emergency.

Some medics who have been held up have even been asked to hand over the “tablets”, sources say.

The tablets, according to a source with

knowledge of the project, have been installed in a way that makes them “impossible to remove” from the vehicles.

They are also locked to health department system, and are useless for any other user.

The installation of the devices, referred to as MDTs, cost about R300m, the source says.

Medics have reportedly raised their concerns with management, but have received no outcome.

They are now calling for communities to be informed the devices are not removable and are not useable outside of the ambulance.

They say in some areas, medics even choose to use ambulances in which the device has not yet been installed or to switch it off.

The increase in attacks has left medics fearful, one source confirms The department of health had not commented by the time of going to print.

The number of whales caught in ropes along the South African coast has increased.

A

s the winter brings an increased number of whales to our waters, the chances increase that the giants become entangled in ropes, nets and lobster traps.

Such cases are rising, says South African Whale Disentanglement Network (SAWDN) head Mike Meyers.

On average, 15 to 17 cases of whale entanglement are reported every year. However, this number is increasing yearly as the population increases, he says.

This year has seen eight cases already, with the whale season still only beginning.

It is expected to peak in September.

Ten years ago, a huge number of entanglements were reported, prompting the department of environmental affairs to approach the lobster industry to fund training from an American whale disentanglement specialist.

The department invited a range of roleplayers and SAWDN was born, with basic training and a set of equipment taught on a mechanical whale tail.

The network now includes a variety of partners, including the Dolphin Protection Action Group, National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Natal Sharks Board, researchers and whale watchers, Meyers says. This has created 17 centres along the South African coastline.

Every year, a new group is trained and more equipment is manufactured. It costs about R25 000 to set up a new team.

The network, which is now the fourth largest in the world, is also affiliated to the International Whaling Commission and shares information and best practice techniques with organisations from other countries.

Report it The public should report any sighting of an entangled whale immediately, says Meyer. There have been reports of people being killed by whales in the past, he explains, which is why the general public should nev-

er attempt to free a whale themselves.

The network will immediately dispatch a boat to locate the animal and monitor it.

The disentanglement team will then follow, using an appropriate knife to cut off whatever rope or net the whale is caught in.

The network has a 100% success rate in disentangling whales trapped on the sea bottom. However, whales entangled but able to break free are difficult to follow, and an entangled whale can face a very slow death, with it taking up to nine months for the caught whale to die.

Dangerous work Disentangling the whale can be very dangerous, Meyer explains.

While humpback whales easily tire and will stop thrashing about, southern right whales tend to kick their tails sideways and this can seriously injure a volunteer.

Safety is very important and the volunteers never enter the water, Meyer says. Only the best equipment is used and all volunteers are trained.

An entangled whale will spin around in the water to attempt to free itself, Meyer explains. This usually pushes the rope towards the whale’s tail, which the whale will kick. This action can be very dangerous to crew trying to help the whale, he says.

“It’s a very scary thing the first time you assist a whale. Many volunteers go out with their heart in their throats,” he says.

But this is all worth it, as freeing a whale is a very emotional experience.

“We’re all geared towards getting that piece of rope off. At the same time, we’re very close to a large animal, and they often cry in fear. Sometimes they don’t even realised that they’re free and we need to give them a touch before they take off like a bullet,” he says. “At that stage, although we’ve been as quiet as possible the whole time, the entire team will cheer.”

The launch of Why did you take so long comes shortly after Samantha and Calla Henn’s return from Johannesburg to attend the SAMRO Wawela Music Awards where they were nominated alongside Blackbyrd and Mccully Workshop in the best South African duo/group category.

Not bad for a group who have only been producing original music since last year.

Calla is one of four children and grew up in a musical family. He performed with various original bands before meeting Sam about four years ago.

Sam’s love affair with music started when she took piano lessons in high school, but life got in the way and she grew up and found herself with a day job.

She was 23 when she met Calla and the two used to sing together at braais until he convinced her to join him on stage. She says the idea of being on stage with “all those people” looking at her was scary, but soon she was working through the day and singing at night, until one day, she decided to focus on music.

“I left my job and I haven’t been back since.” That was three year ago, when Sam and Call were known as Public Holiday.

Within their first year together they won a local battle of the bands competition and got a contract to perform at a top hotel in Dubai.

When they returned in June last year, they decided it was time to focus on original music.

Shelter provides kennels Many township dogs sleep outside – come rain or sunshine, storm, wind or hail. For these dogs, a kennel may be the only thing protecting them from the elements.

This is why Fisantekraal Animal Welfare (FAW) started a kennel project in 2013, says Jennifer Davies of FAW. “Unfortunately, the norm in Fisantekraal is for dogs to stay outside. Many are even tied up and cannot seek shelter themselves.

“While some dog owners will build something for their dog, many do not. If there is a kennel or shelter, it is often inadequate or has disintegrated due to a lack of funds.

“Since we launched the project with the help of sponsors and donations of new and second-hand kennels, well over 400 kennels have been provided – last year alone 200 kennels were placed.

“Where possible, owners are expected to contribute towards the kennel, but we carry most of the cost.”

To sponsor a kennel costs R270, but FAW also accepts secondhand kennels of wood or concrete.

Davies says: “Wooden kennels are great. We also really like concrete kennels for areas where theft is a problem or we know the area is too rough for weaker kennels. We place these on top of pallets covered in a sheet of wood and rubber.

She is a very good watch dog.

Parow blaas nuwe lewe in korfbal STEHAN SCHOEMAN

D

ie Parow-korfbalklub is tans die enigste bestaande klub in Kaapstad en probeer nuwe lewe in dié sport blaas met verskeie ope dae wat beplan word.

Tans is daar ongeveer 60 spelers in die hele Wes-Kaap, met Ceres wat heelwat spelers op o.20-vlak het.

“Ons beplan om een keer per maand ’n ope dag te hou en ons nooi almal om te kom speel.

Dit is ’n gesinssport en baie sosiaal. Ons was juis nou op Saterdag 8 Augustus by die Jan Burger-sportkompleks in Parow.

“Vroeër jare het Bothasig, Eversdal, Durbanville, die Bellville-brandweer, Parowvallei en Epping, om slegs ’n paar plekke te noem, hul eie korfbalklubs gehad.

“Dit is juis die rede hoekom ons die ope dae hou om weer die getalle van die sport op ’n aanvaarbare vlak te kry. Hoekom die getalle oor die jare so drasties afgeneem het,

bly ’n ope vraag,” verduidelik Tania Brase, van die Parow-korfbalklub.

Daar word ook reeds aan planne geskaaf om binnekort ’n beginnersliga vir o.9-seuns en -meisies te begin. Die baan is soortgelyk aan ’n netbalbaan, maar die grootte en afmetings verskil. Daar is nege spelers in ’n span, drie in elke blok, en die span bestaan uit drie doele, drie middelspelers en drie verdedigers. Die bal word soos met netbal van speler tot speler gegooi. Spelers mag nie die bal teen hul lywe vang nie, daar mag nie gemik (ge-dummy) word nie en die speler het twee sekondes om die bal uit te gee. Alhoewel die voetreëls nie so streng is soos met netbal nie, mag die speler nie met die bal vorentoe of agtertoe beweeg wanneer hy of sy beheer daarvan het nie. Doele word aangeteken deur van buite die doelsirkel te doel en word “onder-arm” gegooi, met albei hande.

Women’s fitness extravaganza The second Diva Extravaganza All Women’s Fitness Show will be held on Saturday 1 August at CPUT in Bellville.

Overall winners will walk away with R5 000 prize money and several other hampers are also up for grabs.

“The stage will have fairy lights on a white backdrop, giving it a sensation of beauty and grace on the stage, along with a 15m catwalk going into the crowd,” says Bellville event owner Kevin Schwartz.

“This show is about the athletes who work hard and we have some fantastic sponsors on board that help make it a success.

“This will only be our second Diva Extravaganza and I am positive it will have a snowball effect and become bigger, better and more popular with each passing year,” says Schwartz.

There will be the usual beach bikini, fitness bikini, theme (fairies) and evening dress round. There is also a new exciting pole fitness division - a first for Cape Town.

Pre-judging starts at 11:00 and the main show at 18:00. Spectators pay R100 for prejudging and R150 for the main show.

Harris proving to be top tennis contender Although Lloyd Harris from Durbanville is still a rookie on the pro tennis circuit, he already has his first win under the belt.

Lloyd, the singles champion of the F2 Standard Bank Open, won his maiden singles title on 14 June on the ITF Pro Circuit in what was also his first appearance in a final.

The 18-year-old had been competing at ITF Junior Circuit events over the first four months of the year before starting on a run of ITF Pro Circuit tournaments in Egypt. After only six ITF tournaments, Lloyd clenched his first career title in Maputo. On his way to the final, he defeated world number 587, Song (third seed) from USA and world number 272, Da Silva (first seed) from Portugal.

After Mozambique, Lloyd travelled to Zimbabwe to participate in two ITF Future tournaments in Harare.

On 20 June Lloyd and his doubles partner Nik Scholtz won the doubles title and on 28 June Lloyd won his second singles title on the tour by beating South African number 1 Davis Cup player and first seed, Tucker Vorster in the final.

After this, Lloyd’s singles ranking rose to a new career high of 601 on the ATP rankings.

South Africa Tennis selected him as part of their SA Davis Cup squad who competed against Ireland this past weekend in Pretoria.

Lloyd excelled for South Africa at junior level. He represented SA at world championships from the age of ten.
