Sy benut haar tweede kans DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

T

weede kanse is ’n geskenk.

“Danksy Bergzicht is ek ’n tweede kans gegun. Ek weet nou wat ek met my lewe wil maak en ek werk baie hard om my drome te bewaarheid. My lewe het heeltemal verander!”

Fun walk helps feed children With the R50 entry fee per person for the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk, the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) can feed 25 children. Warren Lodge of PSFA says the association aims to eradicate childhood hunger. The PSFA covers all operating expenses. This means that 100% of all donations are directed exclusively to the actual cost of school feeding. The meals help build the learners’ immune systems, assist with increasing attendance

and performance at school and also enhance their ability to learn. According to the PSFA’s website, three out of four children go hungry every day. V The Blisters for Bread fun walk takes place on Sun day 28 August at the Green Point Cricket Club. The 10km event starts at 07:30 and the 5km event at 08:00. Contact Top Events on 021 511 7130 or visit the website www.topevents.co.za. V TygerBurger will be giving away a pair of HiTec walk ing shoes to the value of R1500. More information to follow on our Facebook page on race day.

Common goal for learners More than 113 Western Cape schools and a total of about 3200 primary and high school learners will be taking part in this year’s Artscape Schools’ Arts Festival from tomorrow (Thursday) to Wednesday 31 August at the Artscape Theatre. “The arts have a central role to play in nation building, and in building social cohesion,” says Artscape’s director of audience development and education, Thokozile Ntshinga. “The Schools’ Arts Festival gives learners the opportunity to showcase their talent on a professional stage, in the form of music, verse or dance. The festival also stimulates a love for theatre and the performing arts, while creating an individual sense of self-esteem, pride and achievement.” The 2016 Schools’ Arts Festival was initiated and coordinated by Artscape’s School Liaison Unit with funding by the HCI Foun-

dation and Die Burger. It aims to encourage nation building as young people and their parents from different cultural backgrounds come together to experience a common goal. From over 113 participating schools, 20 will be selected on merit and sponsored with transport to the Artscape Theatre. Approximately 15 schools will share the same stage each evening, contributing to an exciting and diverse theatre experience – from classical choirs to contemporary dance. The festival culminates in a glittering gala performance on Thursday 1 September by selected schools, attended by various dignitaries. This year’s festival will be adjudicated by Charles Banjatwa, Phillip Swales, Sifiso Kweyama and Anina Lundi. V Tickets to watch the performances cost R40 and are available through Artscape DialaSeat on 021 421 7839 and Computicket.
