ie Demokratiese Alliansie (DA) het twee uit die drie stadswyke in Kraaifontein met verlede week se plaaslike verkiesing met ’n wegholoorwinning ingepalm. Met 87,43% stemme (18 913) sal wyk 7 weer deur die DA bestuur word. Wyk 7 bestaan uit Northpine, Scottsdene, Ruwari en Protea Village in Brackenfell. Grant Twigg, subraad-voorsitter asook raadslid van die wyk, is opgewonde oor die uitslae.
“Baie dankie dat julle weer eens jul vertroue in my as ’n raadslid en in die DA in geheel geplaas het. Ons het bewys dat ons goeie dienste lewer en sal voortgaan daarmee in die volgende vyf jaar. “Ek hoop ook dat die vertroue wat die gemeenskap in ons as plaaslike regering geplaas het, gepaard sal gaan met hul samewerking vir die volgende vyf jaar,” sê hy. Vir sy nuwe ampstermyn wil Twigg spesifiek op die jeug fokus. “Ek wil kyk na maniere waarop ons die jeug op meer positiewe maniere kan besig hou. Dit sal neerkom op meer sport- en ont-
spanningsgeriewe in die wyk,” sê hy. “En natuurlik gaan ons voortbou op dienslewering in al die wyke van die subraad, wat wyke 6 en 111 insluit.” So ook bly wyk 111 onder DA-bewind met 79,79% (16 7997) van die stemme. In die wyk wat bestaan uit Scottsville, Belmontpark, ’n gedeelte van Wallacedene en Peerlesspark, het die ANC 14,32% (3 014) van die stemme verwerf en die ACDP 1,89% (397). Die wykraadslid Brenda Hanse wil haar aandag oor die volgende vyf jaar ook op jeugontwikkeling fokus. V Na bladsy 2.
Sedert verlede Maandag is dit weer oorlog in Scottsdene. Vier mense is reeds doodgeskiet in skietvoorvalle wat na bewering verband hou met die aanhoudende bendegeweld in die area. Volgens ’n onbetwisbare bron is die eerste slagoffer verlede Maandag in sy huis doodgeskiet. “Twee mans het die huis binnegekom en die man doodgeskiet waar hy met sy 2-jarige kleinkind in sy arms gesit het,” sê die bron. Die kind is nie beseer in die aanval nie. In die tweede voorval op Vrydagmiddag is ’n 18-jarige man op straat doodgeskiet, gevolg deur nog ’n voorval op Saterdagmiddag. In die laaste voorval is nog ’n man Sondagaand net buite die VGK Kerk doodgeskiet. Die ouderdomme van die mans is nie bekend nie. Verskeie bronne het aan TygerBurger genoem dat die skietery teen Maandag nog voortgegaan het. “Die gemeenskap is vreesbevange en weier om uit hul huise te kom. Selfs van die polisielede het skrikkerig gelyk,” sê een bron, wat kort ná een van die voorvalle op die toneel was. “Een polisieman het by die oorledene se liggaam gestaan met ’n R5aanvalsgeweer, gereed om te skiet. Hy het baie senuweeagtig om hom rondgekyk en die atmosfeer was angsbelaai,” sê hy. Teen druktyd kon die Kraaifontein-polisie nie bereik word vir kommentaar nie, maar TygerBurger het betroubaar verneem dat daar teen Maandagmiddag nog geen arrestasies gemaak is nie.

Winkeldief het onlangs sy rieme styfgeloop teen ’n op en wakker skoonmaker by die CapeGate-winkelsentrum. Die skoonmaker wie se identiteit beskerm word, was om 18:00 besig om die gange buite ’n rekenaarwinkel skoon te maak toe sy gesien het hoe ’n jong man binne die winkel items van die rakke in sy rugsak druk. “Sy het dadelik inisiatief geneem en die winkel ingehardloop om die personeel bewus te maak van die diefstal,” sê Marinda Bezuidenhout van die betrokke winkel. Sy het boonop ook teruggehardloop om die uitgang te versper toe sy sien die verdagte wou uithardloop. Hy het egter nie ’n kans gehad teen die vasberade vrou, wat bankvas met haar besem in die deur gestaan het nie. “Danksy haar vinnige aksies kon ons personeel hom aankeer. Hy is oorhandig aan die sentrumsekerheid wat die Brackenfellpolisie gekontak het,” sê Bezuidenhout. “Was dit nie vir haar wakende oog nie, het die man weggekom met drie stelle rekenaarluidsprekers ter waarde van R600.

“Ons kan almal by haar ’n les leer om so ’n houding in te neem en meer waaksaam te wees oor wat rondom ons gebeur,” sê sy. Die voorval het verlede Woensdag plaasgevind. In nog ’n voorval die vorige dag, het die optrede van drie sekerheidswagte in die sentrum gelei tot die suksesvolle inhegtenisneming van ’n bedrogverdagte by ’n selfoonwinkel. Die verdagte het beoog om met die identiteit van iemand anders aansoek te doen vir ’n kontrak. Hy is egter uitgevang toe personeel by die winkel deur sy aansoek gewerk het. “Soos ons deur die aansoek gewerk het, het ons agtergekom iets is fout. Hy was byvoorbeeld nie werksaam by die werkgewer wat hy opgegee het nie,” verduidelik Rodney van Niekerk, die bedrogspesialis by die winkel. “Ons het hom toe verwittig dat ons nie die spesifieke foon het wat hy soek nie en hom gevra om die volgende dag terug te kom. “Ons het hom ingewag en met die hulp van sekerheidspersoneel is hy in hegtenis geneem,” sê hy. “Hulle het uitstekende werk gedoen en sonder hul professionele hulp sou dit nie moontlik gewees het nie.” Die verdagte is aan die Brackenfell-polisie oorhandig.

Só het Nicole Jeffries (21) van Kraaifontein besef toe sy onlangs die eerste sewe weke van ’n professionele tienweekkookkunsprogram, sowel as ’n drieweek-opleidingsgeleentheid by Spier op Stellenbosch voltooi het. Vir so lank as wat sy kan onthou was kos haar passie – ’n passie wat sy nou voluit sal kan uitleef, danksy ’n vaardigheidsontwikkelingsprogram van die nie-regeringsorganisasie Bergzicht Training. Die City & Guilds’ Professional Cooking and Food and Beverage Service-program word deur Bergzicht Training in samewerking met The Private Hotel School in Vlottenburg aangebied. “Bergzicht verbeter die lewens van arm, half- en ongeskooldes, sowel as werklose persone, oraloor die Wes-Kaap deur hulle toe te rus met praktiese vaardighede deur programme in selfbemagtiging, educare, gesondheid- en verswaktesorg, en professione-
le kookkuns,” sê hul woordvoerder, Lynne Rippenaar-Moses. Nicole sal dié wêreldbekende kwalifikasie eersdaags heeltemal voltooi, waarna ’n blink toekoms vir haar wink. ’n Paar jaar gelede het dinge egter nie so goed gelyk nie. “Ek wou nie meer skool toe gaan nie en dinge het vir ’n lang tyd sleg in my ouerhuis gegaan. Ek het ook met die verkeerde vriende gemeng en was nie gefokus op my toekoms nie,” vertel Nicole. Tydens 2012 het omstandighede haar forseer om by haar ouma in te trek en het sy kort daarna skool verlaat. “Ek het eers by ’n ander kollege ingeskryf vir ’n kursus in gasvryheid, maar het ná twee jaar opgeskop, omdat my kop by my vriend was en nie by my studies nie,” sê sy. Sy het intussen ook swanger geraak en het vandag ’n eenjarige dogtertjie. “Danksy Bergzicht is ek ’n tweede kans gegun. Ek weet nou wat ek met my lewe wil maak en ek werk baie hard om my drome te bewaarheid. My lewe het heeltemal verander!”

Sy het ingeskryf en het eers die lewensvaardighede-kursus, sowel as die huisbestuur- en die kookkunsprogram voltooi – party dae op ’n leë maag aangesien daar nie altyd geld vir kos en vervoer na haar klasse was nie. Nicole sê dié geleentheid het vir haar deure oopgemaak en sy moedig ander aan om ondanks die struikelblokke in hul pad, nooit op te gee om hul drome te verwesenlik nie. “Ek was voorheen skaam en het koponderstebo gestap. Maar as ek nou met my sjef-klere in die pad stap, voel ek trots en kan ek sien dat mense my met ander oë aankyk,” sê sy.

Common goal for learners More than 113 Western Cape schools and a total of about 3200 primary and high school learners will be taking part in this year’s Artscape Schools’ Arts Festival from tomorrow (Thursday) to Wednesday 31 August at the Artscape Theatre. “The arts have a central role to play in nation building, and in building social cohesion,” says Artscape’s director of audience development and education, Thokozile Ntshinga. “The Schools’ Arts Festival gives learners the opportunity to showcase their talent on a professional stage, in the form of music, verse or dance. The festival also stimulates a love for theatre and the performing arts, while creating an individual sense of self-esteem, pride and achievement.” The 2016 Schools’ Arts Festival was initiated and coordinated by Artscape’s School Liaison Unit with funding by the HCI Foun-
dation and Die Burger. It aims to encourage nation building as young people and their parents from different cultural backgrounds come together to experience a common goal. From over 113 participating schools, 20 will be selected on merit and sponsored with transport to the Artscape Theatre. Approximately 15 schools will share the same stage each evening, contributing to an exciting and diverse theatre experience – from classical choirs to contemporary dance. The festival culminates in a glittering gala performance on Thursday 1 September by selected schools, attended by various dignitaries. Daarom het Lily du Toit van Welgemoed besluit om geld in te samel om 300 pakke eko-vriendelike en herbruikbare sanitêre doekies, Subz Pants and Pads, vir Projek Waardigheid aan te koop. Sy doen die geldinsameling in oorleg met Liza Adlem van Bellville, die koördineerder van Projek Waardigheid in die Wes-Kaap. “Augustus is Vrouemaand en ek het besluit om dit ’n Vrouedag-inisiatief te maak. “Die hele idee het ontstaan ná die ontdekking van die dooie visse in die Klapmutsrivier verlede jaar Januarie en ondersoek daarna ingestel is. “My man, Giellie, het in Klapmuts aan die Rozenmeer-ontwikkeling gewerk en het navraag by die plaaslike munisipaliteit gedoen en ook sommer sy eie ondersoek gedoen. Dis toe ontdek dat die visse dood is omdat stukke lappe en ander gemors in die skroewe van die filtreerstasie verstrengel geraak het en verhoed het dat die gefiltreerde water nie die rivier bereik nie.
Rioolslyk loop oor “Die rioolslyk het oorgeloop en direk in die rivier gevloei wat die visse vergiftig en laat vrek het,” vertel sy. Volgens Giellie was die repe materiaal oorblyfsels van lappe wat as sanitêre doekies deur die vroue en meisies in Klapmuts gebruik word, omdat hulle nie sanitêre doekies kon bekostig nie. “Ek was so geskok om te ontdek dat daar in vandag se lewe nog mense is wat nie iets soos ’n sanitêre doekie kan bekostig nie en dat hulle gebruik maak van koerantpapier, blare, sand en stukke materiaal om met hul menstruasie te help. Voorheen het ek nie eers gedink aan watter
impak menstruasie en die hantering daarvan op mense in agtergeblewe gemeenskappe kan hê nie. Maar toe ek met die feite gekonfronteer word, het ek besluit ek wil ’n verskil maak en het toe ingeskakel by Projek Waardigheid,” vertel Lily. Lily sê sy voel baie sterk dat weggooibare sanitêre produkte omgewingsonvriendelik is en het haar eie ondersoek begin. In haar ondersoek het sy toe die Subz Pants and Pads van Sue Barnes van KwaZulu-Natal ontdek het en ook bewus geword van Projek Waardigheid.
Ekovriendelike produkte “Sue het self die eko-vriendelike produkte ontwerp nadat sy die impak van die gebrek aan sanitêre produkte op opvoeding en waardigheid van jong meisies en vroue in Suid-Afrika besef het. Deur Projek Waardigheid kan duisende skoolgaande meisies en vroue van agtergeblewe gemeenskapppe ’n drastiese verbetering in hul lewens sien, danksy die groot hoeveelhede Subz-pakke wat geskenk is. Die pak bevat ’n higiëniese, wasbare sanitêre doekie met hakies op ’n spesiale katoenbroekie, wat elke keer ná gebruik gewas kan word en jou tot vyf jaar kan hou,” vertel Lily. Sy het gesê elke pak kos R150 en bestaan uit twee katoenbroekies met ses wasbare doekies, wat met seep en water gewas kan word. Sy wil genoeg geld insamel om 300 pakke te koop en dit eerstens onder die inwoners in Klapmuts en daarna die Kaapse Vlakte versprei. “Om hierdie projek te ondersteun, verskaf jy meer as net die sanitêre produkte aan die meisies en vroue. Jy help ook indirek om te verseker dat ’n biologiese proses maklik hanteer kan word en nie die rede is waarom meisies uit die skool en vroue uit hul werk bly wanneer hulle hul maandstonde het nie,” het Lily gesê. Off to school in ‘Walking Bus’

lmost eight out of every 100 teenagers in some Kraaifontein high schools are either pregnant or already parents, struggling with the demands of parenthood as they try to complete their school career. This reality was made evident during an assessment at one such school in Wallacedene done by the Durbanville-based Usapho Foundation. This non-profit foundation was established in May 2013 to empower families by means of specific preventative and developmental intervention programmes. A Teen Parenting project, implemented at Hector Petersen and Misibambane Secondary schools in recent years, is one such programme. “Using detailed questionnaires, it became evident that the learners at these schools are struggling to make healthy decisions in terms of relationships, and most of the time regret it,” says Elize Hendricks, a director at Usapho.
Boys, young men included “These teens struggle to care for their young ones not only materially but also emotionally, because they themselves lack basic life skills. For instance, they fail to assert themselves because of a negative self-esteem,” she says. “Naturally, the maltreatment of their children is often a matter of concern,” she adds. It is not only the girls who attended the
group discussions at the schools. “We had enquiries from many boys and young men who were also included in the parenting programme. While they are parents too and will get the same basic parenting training, there needs to be some different mentoring and guidance for these young,” she says. It also became evident that psycho social support services was critically needed. “The questionnaire the learners completed, indicated that a lot of them are exposed to violence and death and are in desperate need of guidance and counselling to cope with loss and grief. “Some of them are in child-headed families and struggle with everyday demands of life.” The 18-week programme entails workshops where the learners are equipped with positive parenting and life skills. It also deals with issues such as self-esteem, understanding their children’s behaviour and feelings, learning to listen and being assertive, positive discipline and problem solving. “Relationships and sexuality, as well as HIV and AIDS, loss and grief are dealt with as well as managing money and ways to generate an income,” she adds. The Teen Parenting material was developed by another NPO, The Parent Centre, but adapted by Usapho to suit the societal norms within the specific communities. Hendricks says the foundation aims to develop preventative strategies for children and families at risk and equip parents and caregivers. “Our objective is to run as many parent-

A Walking School Bus was initiated in Scottsdene last week. The first of its kind in Kraaifontein, the Western Cape minister of community safety, Dan Plato, officiated the launch last Thursday morning. A Walking School Bus is essentially a group of children walking to school together chaperoned by one or more adults. “The Walking Bus initiative aims to create a safe and supervised route for learners to and from school every day ,” says Plato. The initiative will see parents forming the “drivers” of the “bus”, supported by the local neighbourhood watch, Community Policing Forum and the relevant schools and ward councillor to help safeguard learners to and from school. “The Scottsdene Walking Bus will see parents volunteering their time to help improve the safety of learners on their way to school with the support of the traffic and law enforcement units as well as the police. Safety is everyone’s responsibility and the through the Walking Bus initiative, the parents, learners and educators in Scottsdene are making safety a priority,” he said.
Cycle broken Hendricks says ongoing assessment with participants and their children will continue to gauge and ensure that there is relevant impact. “The cycle of teen pregnancies will hopefully be broken, when the next generation is equipped to make better decisions. These young learners will have the skills to emotionally care for their children by making healthy decisions and asserting themselves better before they leave school. Their sense of responsibility will be addressed so that they will own up and care for themselves and their babies. “More importantly, we are positive that through our intervention there will be an improvement in their school attendance as well as their academic performance. Toneeltienertalent weer op die planke D
ie Wes-Kaap se beste tienertoneeltalent gaan van vandag (10 Augustus) tot Saterdag op die planke te sien wees by die Hoërskool Durbanville se elfde skoletoneelfees. Sedert die ontstaan van dié skoletoneelfees in 2006 het dié fees ontwikkel tot een van die gewildste toneelfeeste vir hoërskole. Altesame 19 eenbedrywe sal aangebied word in die skool se ouditorium. Vir Afrikaanse skoletoneel bied die ATKV jaarliks die Nasionale Tienertoneelkompetisie aan, maar volgens Jan Burger, die organiseerder van die fees, is daar ’n groot behoefte aan meer blootstelling en optreegeleenthede vir die skole en dramaskole wat soveel moeite doen en onkoste aangaan om produksies op die been te bring. Hy het in 2006 die Hoërskool Durbanville se Skoletoneelfees op die been gebring om nóg ’n vertoonvenster daarvoor te skep. “Die Wes-Kaap is landwyd bekend vir die besonder hoë gehalte van sy tienertoneel,”
sê Burger. “Ek droom van die dag dat die algemene publiek die gehalte van tienertoneel in die Wes-Kaap sal besef en dit ondersteun. Daar word dikwels werk van professionele standaard gelewer en baie van vandag se topregisseurs en professionele akteurs se pad loop deur tienertoneel. “Oor die afgelope elf jaar het van die skole wat vanjaar deelneem, gesamentlik sewe keer die ATKV se Nasionale Tienertoneelkompetisies gewen, wat net weer die standaard van hierdie fees onderstreep,” sê Burger. Die Hoërskool Durbanville se skoletoneelfees is oop vir enige taalgroep. Daar is vanjaar 12 Afrikaanse, 5 Engelse en 2 Xhosa-produksies op die verhoog. Altesame 13 skole bring 19 produksies na die fees. Deelnemers uit die noordelike voorstede is die hoërskole Durbanville, Bellville, Tygerberg, Stellenberg en Fairmont. Inskrywings kom verder uit alle uithoeke. Uit Stellenbosch is daar inskrywings van die Paul Roos Gimnasium, Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof en die Hoërskool Stellenbosch. Uit Somerset-Wes bring die Hoërskool Parel-Vallei vier produksies, uit Kaapstad neem die Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck deel en uit Uitenhage het die Hoërskool Brandwag ingeskryf. Daar word elke aand tussen vier en vyf eenbedrywe opgevoer, wat elk tussen 20 en 45 minute duur. Kaartjies is by dite koop teen R30 vir volwassenes en R15 vir skoliere. Bome weer in pienk getooi Bome in die voorstede van Kaapstad sal eersdaags weer in pienk toegewikkel word wanneer die Pink Trees for Pauline en die Kankervereniging van Suid-Afrika (Kansa) hul 2016-projek van stapel stuur. “Pink Trees for Pauline en Kansa se samewerking in die 2015-projek het meegebring dat fondse vir kankergemeenskappe oor Suid-Afrika heen met groot sukses ingesamel is. “Duisende hande en voete het onophoudelik vir weke gewerk om dorpe in SuidAfrika in pienk toe te draai, en vanjaar sal hierdie twee organisasies voortgaan om saam te werk om mense by te staan wat deur kanker geaffekteer is,” sê Adri Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen, besturende direkteur van Pink Trees for Pauline. In die noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad, het Brackenfell, Durbanville en Melkbosstrand deelgeneem aan die projek. “Dis ’n voorreg om saam met Kansa te werk. Kansa het die projek gedurende 2015 in meer as 40 dorpe geïmplementeer. “Met al die middele en vrywilligers tot Kansa se beskikking, is ten minste 20% meer van die SA bevolking gedurende die 2015-projek bereik. Ná byna vier jaar is die grootste geskenk steeds om te weet die fondse wat in dorpe ingesamel word, gaan
aan die kankergemeenskappe van daardie spesifieke dorpe,” sê sy. “Kansa is opgewonde om weer vanjaar die projek saam met Pink Trees for Pauline aan te pak,” sê Gerda Strauss, Kansa se hoof van dienslewering. “Nie alleenlik word waardevolle bewusmaking vir kankeropvoeding gedoen nie, maar ons samel ook direk fondse in vir persone wat op die oomblik teen kanker veg. Verlede jaar is nagenoeg R150 000 deur middel van die projek ingesamel, wat gebruik is om rystoele, looprame en spesiale matrasse vir kankerpasiënte aan te skaf. Fondse is ook aangewend vir vervoerkoste na klinieke en hospitale, asook vir akkommodasie in ons Kansa-tehuise. “Kansa moedig alle gemeenskappe aan om ‘pienk’ te gaan en die projek te ondersteun. Help ons om pasiënte by te staan tydens kankerbehandeling. “Fondse wat ingesamel word deur die 2016-projek, word aangewend vir akkommodasie gedurende behandeling, tuisgebonde versorging, voedingskemas van pasiënte, opleiding van welsynswerkers, asook die verskaffing van prostese en rystoele,” sê Strauss. Agterstalliges nie meer geduld Mense wat in die Stad Kaapstad in huurhuise woon en nie hul huurgeld betaal of reëlings tref nie, sal nie verder geduld word nie. Talle inwoners het reeds die afgelope tyd uitsettingsbevele teen hulle gekry, omdat hulle voortdurend agterstallig is met hul betalings. Die Stad sê dié inwoners het dikwels die geld om te betaal, maar hulle weier om dit te doen. Chris Barnard, projekbestuurder by TraceOnline wat deur die Stad gekontrakteer is om mense onder meer by te staan met inligting oor hoe om hul huise te behou, sê nadat ’n uitsettingsbevel teen hulle toegestaan is, moes ’n aantal huurders eers dadelik die regskoste plus drie maande se huur vooruit betaal het om in hul huise te kon aanbly. “Volgens stadsbeleid kan hulle in so ’n geval ’n reëling tref om verdere agterstallige bedrae af te betaal. Die voorwaarde is egter dat hulle onder geen omstandighede weer agterstallig mag raak nie,” verduidelik Barnard. Hy sê dit is hartseer dat mense hulself en hul gesinne blootstel aan uitsetting deur talle aanmanings te ignoreer en nie die reëlings te tref nie. “Die Stad het verskeie
opsies, met voorwaardes, om die afbetaling van agterstallige huur te vergemaklik,” sê Barnard. Hy sê hoewel daar begrip is daarvoor dat baie mense se finansiële posisie benard is en dat werkloosheid ’n al hoe groter probleem word, is daar maniere waarop hulle die dak oor hulle en hul gesin se koppe kan beskerm. Barnard sê om aanmanings bloot te ignoreer en te hoop dat die probleem vanself sal verdwyn, is onverskillig en sal uiteindelik tot uitsetting lei. “Ek kry seer om te dink daar is mense wat hulle of hul gesin aan sulke risiko’s blootstel terwyl daar ander oplossings bestaan,” sê hy. Hy verduidelik dat baie mense besef nie dat daar sowat 300 000 mense op die behuisingswaglys in die Kaapse metropool is nie, wat bereid is om te betaal en as iemand deur die hof uitgesit word, sal hul huis blitsvinnig aan iemand anders op die waglys toegeken word. Barnard sê een oplossing vir huishoudings met ’n gesamentlike inkomste van minder as R3 200 per maand is om aansoek te doen om ’n deernistoelae. The City of Cape Town rolled out card payment facilities for motor vehicle registration services at the municipal office in Durbanville last week. The City also expanded this service to its municipal centres in Kuils River, Parow, Kraaifontein, Bellville, Goodwood and Brackenfell in the past two weeks. The extension of credit and debit card payment facilities follows the successful pilot roll-out of this service at the Cape Town Civic Centre in June. The expansion of card payment facilities for the payment of rates and tariff accounts, building plan and land use applications and traffic fines will take a bit longer as system upgrades
are required. The City accepts payments of up to R5000 per transaction by credit or debit card, or any other means of payment which does not hold any cost implications for the client. This amount covers most transactions by clients, including vehicle licences, rates and services bills, or other sundry payments. The City will, however, reclaim banking fees for any payment over R5000. “We are forging ahead with the enhancement of services at our municipal centres and we are committed to finding ways of constantly improving the level of convenience for our customers,” says Ian Neilson, the City’s executive deputy mayor.
Edu-Play centre hosts open day The Edu-Play early learning centre in Durbanville for children with developmental delays and learning barriers such as autism, will present open days on Tuesday 23 August and Saturday 3 September. The centre, which opened its doors in January this year, is a special education needs centre that delivers inclusive educational and therapeutic services for children from two years and up to grade 3. It operates from a house at 9 Oxford Street, Durbanville. The idea was born when Lizé du Toit from Durbanville, a
counselling psychologist and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) life and wellness coach, and her partner, Carlyn Coetzee, also a counselling psychologist, realised the shortage of such facilities. Kenridge man helps animals in need GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

hile it may have been raining cats and dogs when Mark Anley celebrated his birthday in Observatory recently, real cats and dogs were overjoyed when he got some great gifts for them. This Kenridge resident loves to do things differently and asked the public to give him presents for pets in need (“Paying it forward for pooches”, TygerBurger, 12 July). Two years ago he started with a target of 250 items to help pets in peril, but upped the target to 1000 this year. He made it, and more! Mark was ecstatic after hosting a birthday bash at The Slug and Lettuce at the River Club on Saturday 23 July, which also marked the end of his donation drive. “The response was fantastic,” he says. “I have to thank TygerBurger and People’s Post for the part they played because it is going to make a huge difference in the charities that we are supporting. We could not have dreamed that the response would be so great in such a short time span. We collected loads of donations, which filled my garage on both sides! “The final tally was about 1.5 tons of dog and cat food and hundreds of blankets as well as some kennels for the amazing charities, with some cash contributions as well.” Mark adds that the party at the River Club was also a huge success. “The birthday party was fantastic and so many people gave of their time and talent to be part of the event. “Those who attended also added to the stash of donations with members of the public, friends, family and a host of well-known SA personalities who came to show their support to help these charities. “The highlight was when the amazing Danny K ended the evening’s performances

Without them this wouldn’t have been possible.” The charities chosen to benefit were the Animal Anti-Cruelty League in Cape Town (AACL), Pet Empowerment in Townships
(PETS) that operates across the Western Cape and the Lamberts and Elands Animal Protection Services on the West Coast. Anoux Aimeè Massey from PETS thanked Mark for his initiative, pointing out that generous gifts like this motivated them to keep caring for animals. “Gifts from donors like you (Mark) provide the financial and moral support needed
to continue our mission,” she says. “You’ve demonstrated your deep commitment to our work of rescuing animals in need in townships and there is no way to fully express our gratitude for your loyalty. “We are continually inspired by the dedication and generosity of donors like yourself who answer the call to give again and again.”

60 years later women still ‘the full circle’ Imagine the scene: The year is 1956 and South Africa’s skewed policies have become increasingly repressive, directly influencing the livelihoods of millions of South Africans. In the midst of this turbulence, more than 20 000 brave women of all races and walks of life, stood together to march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, protesting the “pass laws” that were threatening not only their freedom, but also their family life. As they stood outside the official seat of the president, they began to sing a special song: “Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo! (Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.)” “I felt a lump in my throat when I looked at this large army of women: dignified women, courageous women. I felt so humbled to be part of such bravery,” one of the leaders of the march, Sophia Williams de Bruyn, said. She was joined at the front of the crowd with Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph and Rahima ‘Now you have Moosa. From the Oumas who make sure their grandchildren are clothed and fed, to the mothers working more than one job to keep their family afloat, and the daughters who help. In a world still rife with patriarchy and inequality, it’s important to take the time to remember the women who helped pave the way for a better South Africa and to celebrate the women who continue to fight for an inclusive society. As author Diane Mariechild says: “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” – Louisa Steyl

Volgens die lys in die aangehegte webblad is die Hyperolius horstockii blykbaar op die oomblik buite gevaar en gelys as “least concern”, maar die Microbatrachella capensis word op dieselfde webblad as ernstig bedreig geklassifiseer (Http://www.iucnredlist.org/ details/13318/0 en http:// www.iucnredlist.org/). Beide hierdie paddatjies woon in die vleilande aan die Kaapse Weskus. Die Hyperorlius maak duidelik van die aronskelk (blaar en blom) as rus- of dalk skuilplek gebruik. Hoewel hulle nie in die blomme hul eiers lê nie, word daar in een studie aangedui dat die eiers onder die water aan die wortels van plante heg en daar uitbroei. Ek sou ook dink dat hulle in die blomme klim waar hulle jag maak op insekte. Ek het foto’s gesien van verskeie soorte blomme en plante waarin verskeie klein diertjies soos paddas, akkedisse en selfs veldmuisies skuil. Op een van die foto’s het ’n akkedissie in ’n roos geskuil. Dit beteken dat wanneer ’n aronskelk in die veld gepluk word, is dit moontlik dat ’n klein dieretjie daarin skuil. Wat gaan gebeur wanneer iemand daardie diertjie in die blom sien? Die diertjie gaan uitgeskud word of die blom weggegooi word en in beide gevalle sal die diertjie vrek. Die groter bekommernis is egter die Microbatrachella capensis, wat as krities bedreig bestempel word en ’n habitat deel met die Hyperoli-
us. Vleilande is habitat vir ’n groot verskeidenheid van diere, voëls, waterdiere en insekte en dis terselfdertyd ook ’n baie delikate ekosisteem. Die Microbatrachella is maar een van die spesies in die vleiland wat as bedreig aangedui word. Daar is ook heelwat plante in so ’n vleiland. Ek het nie navorsing hieroor gedoen nie, maar ek dink daar is ook plante wat bedreig word. In hul poging om by die aronskelke uit te kom, sal mense nie omgee vir die diere en insekte en ander plante wat hulle in die proses vernietig nie. Microbatrachella moet seker een van die redes wees waarom dit onwettig is om aronskelke in die veld te pluk. Dit is dus ’n delikate ekosisteem en vir daardie rede alleen behoort ons saam te staan in ’n poging om te voorkom dat vleiland-plante verwyder of beskadig word. Hier in die Kaap het ons ’n besondere natuur- en plantlewe. Dit is tog so ’n vermorsing wanneer ’n mens kyk na die dooie aronskelke wat langs die pad lê. Is dit nie beter om dit in die veld te los, waar almal dit kan geniet en bewonder nie? Eerder as om dit te pluk en die plant is binne ’n dag dood, want veldblomme hou nie so lank soos blomme wat by ’n bloemiste of kwekery gekoop word nie. wees. Dit is ook onwettig om op straat te smous. As ons nie besorg is oor die wêreld om ons nie, hoe kan ons droom om besorg te wees oor ons medemens? Ja, soms is ek meer besorg oor die dierewêreld as die mense. ’n Volk word gemeet aan hoe hulle die omgewing wat hulle bewoon, waardeer en beskerm. Saam met Madelein Joubert en Loané van Sandwyk vertel dié trio die storie van ’n basaar op ’n klein dorpie, met al die karakters wat daarmee saamgaan, maar deur al die grappigheid spreek die vroue ook die baie ernstige en sensitiewe onderwerp van plaasmoorde aan. Loané, Madelein en Anja het die toneelstuk verlede jaar geskryf terwyl hulle besig was met hul honneursjaar by die Universiteit Stellenbosch, waar hulle kabaret studeer het. Madelein vertel dat nie baie mense bekend is met die kabaret-genre is nie. “Hulle dink aan ’n rokerige kamer of kroeg met ’n broeiende sanger en ’n klavier.” Eintlik gaan kabaret meer oor sosiale kommentaar. “Dis die gebruik van satire, ironie en parodie om kwessies aan te spreek.” Met dít in gedagte het Madelein, Anja en Loané besluit dat die kwessie van plaasmoorde die ideale onderwerp is om aan te spreek. “Dis ’n kontroversiële onderwerp,” sê Madelein. “Daar’s so baie dinge wat daarop inspeel en dis iets waaroor ons al drie baie sterk voel.” Anja sê hulle gebruik die Afrikaner as ’n platform. “Dit speel af by ’n basaar in ’n klein plattelandse dorpie waar ons die Afrikaner-psige en -kultuur ook kan aanspreek.” Hoewel Madelein van Durbanville is, kom Anja oorspronklik van Burgersdorp, terwyl Loané van Bloemfontein is. Hulle het hul eie
“kleindorpie-ervarings” saamgetrek om Verplaas se karakters te skep. Al handel dit oor ’n swaar onderwerp, verseker Madelein dit is nie die soort produksie waar die gehoor “heeltyd gaan sit en wroeg” nie. “Almal lag die hele tyd deur.” Verder gebruik die vroue hoofsaaklik die FAK-sangbundel as hul bron van parodie. “So dis alles wat mense ken,” sê Madelein. “Ons probeer om dit vir mense toeganklik te maak, sodat die probleem uitgelig word in die konteks waarin dit geplaas word.” “Ons voel jy hoef nie ’n gereelde teaterganger te wees om die stuk te geniet nie, maar gereelde teatergangers sal ook daarvan hou,” sê Madelein. “Ek dink ons produksie is vars,” sê Anja. “Dis oorspronklik en nie verbonde aan ’n soort genre nie. Ek dink ons bied iets nuuts vir die teater.” Toe Anja, Madelein en Loané hul studies voltooi het, het hulle besluit om Verplaas te gebruik om in die toneelbedryf in te kom. Die produksie is geskep onder leiding van hul dosent, Marthinus Basson, wat aanbeveel het dat hulle die stuk vir feeste inskryf. Verplaas het al klaar blitsverkoper-optredes by Stellenbosch se Woordfees en die Vrystaatse kunstefees in Bloemfontein gehad, maar die drie het besef dis nie genoeg speeltyd nie. Toe besluit hulle om teaters te nader. Teatergangers sal nóg ’n kans kry om Verplaas te sien wanneer dit môre (Donderdag) in die Drostdy-teater in Stellenbosch op die planke is. an die oprit van sy huis in Vereeniging tot goue status! Só is die jong sanger Refentse Morake vinnig besig om aanhangers oor Suid-Afrika heen te wen. Kapenaars sal ’n kans kry om dié Facebook-sensasie in aksie te sien wanneer hy op Vrydag 19 Augustus die Kraaifontein-stadsaal-verhoog met Kurt Darren gaan deel. Die 19-jarige Refentse se musiekloopbaan het vroeg verlede jaar vlamgevat nadat ’n verbyganger hom voor sy huis hoor “De la Rey” sing het. Sy het sommer ’n video van hom op haar selfoon geneem en dit op Facebook gelaai, waar dit in vier dae 120 000 keer deur ander Suid-Afrikaners en mense oor die wêreld heen gekyk is. Refentse, wat toe nog ’n matriekleerder was, sê die sukses van sy video was vir hom opwindend en skokkend. “Dit het my baie geloof in my talent gegee.” Kort daarna is hy uitgenooi om saam met Karen Zoid by 2015 se KKNK op te tree, waar Select Musiek hom raakgesien het. Sy debuutalbum, My hart bly in ’n taal, is in April bekendgestel en het net vier maande geneem om goue status te bereik. Die 12-snit-album bestaan uit twee oorspronklike liedjies en ’n versameling van gewilde Afrikaanse liedere wat hulde bring aan legendes soos onder andere David Kramer, Koos Kombuis, Laurika Rauch en Johannes Kerkorrel. “Dis liedjies wat my verlief gemaak het op die taal en musiek in die taal,” vertel Refentse. Hy beskryf sy komposisies as: “Dis eerlik en opreg.” Sy musiek is “baie outyds en orga-
nies” en hy vertel dat hy in Afrikaans sing omdat dit nog altyd sy hartstaal is. “Ek druk myself die beste in Afrikaans uit.” Refentse sê hy sien baie uit na sy konsert in die Kaap, wat deur Bakgat-Promosies aangebied word. “Ek kan nie wag nie.” V Kaartjies vir Refentse se vertoning met Kurt Darren in die Kraaifonteinstadsaal op Vrydag 19 Augustus vanaf 19:00, kos tussen R90 en R130 en is by Compu ticket beskikbaar. Seksualiteit die temas van aande S
eksualiteit en spiritualiteit is die temas van ’n reeks gespreksaande op Sondagaande, wat op Sondag 14 Augustus by die NG kerk Durbanville op die hoek van Kerkstraat en Weyerslaan begin. Die tema “Seks se storie binne die kerk” word op Sondag 14 Augustus deur Nicki Spies bespreek. Spies is ’n praktiese teoloog, narratiewe terapeut, genderspesialis en sosiale kommentator wat gereeld aan gesprekforums deelneem. “Seks is seker die oudste verhaal van die

mensdom. In die verhaal van seks is daar soveel vreugde, plesier, hartseer en taboe opgesluit,” sê Spies. “Ons gaan gesels oor waar hierdie idees oftewel konstruksies oor seks en seksualiteit vandaan kom en hoe dit gevorm word – van die Ou Testamentiese tye tot en met vandag. “Hierdie gesprek is veral daarop gerig om te verstaan hoe hierdie idees gestalte kry in mense se lewens en wat die gevolg daarvan is,” sê sy. Spies is ook die spreker op Sondag 21 Augustus met die tema “Die taai toffies van ons tyd”. “In hierdie gesprek gaan ons gesels oor die mees prominente stories oor seks in terme van geloof, waardes en voorgeskrewe geslagsrolle, maar ook hoe seksualiteit en seks vandag in ons samelewing lyk,” sê sy. Hierdie gesprek sal onderwerpe aanspreek soos hoe om met jou liefdesmaat oor seks te gesels; hoe praat jy met jou jong kind oor seks; tienerseksualiteit; pornografie; en seks in die verskillende lewensfases van saamwees. Op Sondag 28 Augustus sal Michelle Boonzaaier die tema “Woorde om oor seks te praat” bespreek. Michelle Boonzaaier is ’n proponent in die NG Kerk en is tans gekoppel aan NG kerk Brackenfell. Haar werk die afgelope ses jaar by Inclusive and Affirming Ministries sluit in opleiding in Christen-geloofsgemeenskappe en pastorale versorging van LGBTI (lesbiër, gay, biseksueel, transgender en inter-
seks)-mense en hul gesinne. Sy is tans besig met ’n meestersgraad in gender, gesondheid en teologie op Stellenbosch met die fokus op die ontwikkeling van prosesse van insluiting van LGBTI-mense in die NG Kerk “In hierdie sessie help ons mekaar om oor seks te praat. Ons leer om konsepte soos seksuele oriëntasie, gender-identiteit, asook woorde soos lesbiër, gay, biseksueel, transgender, interseks, queer, aseksueel en heteroseksueel beter te verstaan. Sy praat op Sondag 4 September oor “Veilige ruimtes vir verskille”. Sy sal Inclusive and Affirming Ministries (IAM), wat oor 21 jaar ’n proses ontwikkel het om oor seks en seksualiteit te praat, se teorie gebruik as een manier om moeilike gesprekke te voer in geloofsgemeenskappe. Temas wat hieruit voortvloei sal insluit inklusiewe gemeentes of gemeenskappe wat diversiteit vier; die skep van veilige ruimtes waar mense se stories vertel en gehoor kan word; asook bewuste omgee. André Kilian bespreek “Emosies in gesprekke”. Tydens hierdie sessie gaan die praktiese verhaal van ’n gemeente en wat hy daaruit geleer het, deur Kilian gedeel word. “Ons gaan saamdink oor die spesifieke emosies wat by ons wakker word wanneer seksualiteit en spiritualiteit op die tafel kom in ons geloofsgemeenskap. “Dit is ’n geleentheid om saam te dink oor hoe ons as ’n gemeente nader aan mekaar kan beweeg wanneer ons met mekaar gesels oor die sensitiewe kruispunt tussen seksua-

Die prentjies van onder meer plaasimplemente wat ’n afgetrede boer van Durbanville vir ’n 5-jarige seuntjie in hul familie geteken het, het nou gelei tot die uitgee van ’n boek met dié sketse en stories wat daarby pas. Eric Burger, wat met appels en pere in die Koo-vallei in Montagu geboer het, is deur die familie aangespoor om sy boek Wiele en Masjiene met sy sketse en ook later stories wat daarby pas, uit te gee, maar hy wou ook daarmee stadsjapies meer oor die plaaslewe leer. “My eintlike beweegrede om die boekie die lig te laat sien, is omdat daar baie van ons ouers ’n groot belangstelling het in goed met wiele – hedendaags of uit hul grootworddae. “Baie kinders, veral seuns, word nie meer daaraan blootgestel nie. Watter dorpskind weet wat ’n stroper is; dat water met ’n windpomp gepomp word; dat lande geploeg en gesaai word; dat beeste op ’n veiling verkoop word?” vra hy. “Die prentjies het te doen met alles wat wiele en masjiene het – van mo-
tors tot swaarvoertuie en plaasmasjinerie. Die stories, wat later bygevoeg is, vertel van ’n spesifieke situasie en elkeen het óf ’n bietjie humor óf ’n lewensles,” sê hy. Die 20 volkleur-illustrasies in die boek is gedoen met potlood, kleurpotlood en pen. “Die sketsies is so eenvoudig dat dit die kinders sal aanspoor om dit na te teken. Die beskrywings is so gedoen dat dit ou en nuwe terme en name gebruik, maar leesbaar is vir kinders van so agt jaar en ouer. “Vir kleiner kinders kan dit natuurlik gelees word, maar hulle kan selfs die prentjies kyk en hul eie storie daarom bou,” sê Burger. Daar is selfs ’n woordelys agter in die boek met vreemde woorde en begrippe sodat die leser – dalk selfs die ouers – die betekenis kan naslaan. In sy inleiding skryf Burger dié boek is bedoel vir die “manne onder ons”. “Die manne wat belangstel in alles met regte wiele en masjiene – nie so baie hou van stories oor kabouters en feetjies en prinsesse in kastele en ... “Die prinsessies kan ook maar die boekie lees, so sal hulle ook kan leer
van die goeters waaroor die manne praat.” Burger het sy sketse aanvanklik gemaak vir die 5-jarige Marco Visser, wat in Windhoek woon. “Sy ma is my skoonsuster se dogter. Hy was in daardie stadium die enigste kleinseun in die familie met wie ons gereeld kontak gehad het en hy is gek oor goed met wiele,” vertel hy. Hoewel hierdie Burger se eerste boek is, is dit beslis nie sy eerste kunswerke nie. Hy skilder al sowat 12 jaar lank landskappe sedert sy aftrede, hoofsaaklik in olieverf. Meeste skilderye skenk hy aan familielede – van seetonele en sonsondergange tot berge en Weskushuisies, enigiets waarvan die familie hou. Ook is dit nie sy laaste boek nie ...’n Engelse weergawe is feitlik gereed, en daar is reeds ’n opvolgboek in Afrikaans in die vooruitsig. Die boek is beskikbaar teen R150 elk. Drummies take major accolade T
he Fairmont High School majorette team is the best in the country in their division after beating the best in last month’s 40th Samca National Majorette and Cheerleading Championship in Germiston. Competing in the High School Presidents League Champion of Champions section, Fairmont beat Grace Trinity School for Girls from Gauteng into second place with JG Meiring (Goodwood) taking the third spot. Fairmont competed in the following categories: large drill, flag group, pom/non-prop group and throwing prop group. The team consisting of 22 young women from Fairmont as well as girls from Durbanville High School, Robinvale High in Atlantis and Rhenish High School for Girls in Stellenbosch, made up this small yet dynamic team. “Many hours of practise is required in order for the team to perform their displays with precision, timing and showmanship. It takes discipline and commitment, sacrifice and dedication to be part of a majorette team. This certainly was the case from all the girls in the 2016 team,” says team coach Karen Donachie. At the championship each display was precise, entertaining and extremely excit-

home. Every day I tried to lift it a little bit higher than the next. “Eventually after six months I could lift the weight above my head. It gave me great satisfaction, and that is how I got involved in the game of powerlifting – by accident, dare I say,” says a reminiscent Adamo. Adamo represented South Africa for the first time at the age of 40 in 1984 at the world powerlifting championship in Chicago, Illinois – a moment in history he will never forget, and for obvious reasons. “Man, let me tell you, that was one for the record books. I did a squat of 280kg, bench press of 180kg and a deadlift of 280kg, giving me a total of 740kg in the 100kg weight division. I beat a Canadian fellow by 5kg for the gold medal,” said Adamo. Squatting 300kg for the first time was also a “big thing” for Tony at his old training gym in Tokai. To this day there are not many guys that can squat 300kg with proper form and good depth. “I did three reps with that squat and also three reps with 300kg on the deadlift.”

magine you go mountain climbing and on your way up you see these two cement balls attached to a steel bar weighing around 100kg and you can barely lift it. That is the bizarre – but true – story of how Tony Adamo (72) from Bellville fell in love with powerlifting. “I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was 18 years old and knew nothing about gyms and training and that stuff. I also vividly remember trying to lift it, but I could barely get it up to my knees. I rolled it down the mountain and took it
Years later in 1991 he broke the world squat record with a 350kg attempt, a record that stood for many years. His best bench press is 225kg, a massive 350kg squat and a 320kg deadlift. Tony also competed in weightlifting with success, earning Springbok colours, but prefers powerlifting that is regarded as the most powerful and strongest sport. “Weightlifting is all about speed, technique and then strength. Powerlifting is strength with a little bit of technique. It is a sport of brute strength. My personal best attempts is a clean and jerk of 175kg and snatch 120kg in weightlifting.” Turning back the clock to his teenage years, Tony was a bright prospect as a junior Springbok cyclist. In 1972 he did a 40km time trial in 59:14. “I loved cycling but my love for powerlifting was greater. Later on I felt I needed to take a break from powerlifting. I didn’t have an injury or something like that; I just felt I needed a mental break from the sport. “From 1991 to 1995 I was back in the saddle and did five Cape Argus cycle races at the time. My best time was 2:57, which is not too bad. That was my so-called glory years. Now I train three times a week to keep healthy and fit. At my age I can still easily squat 200kg, bench 150kg and deadlift 200kg – not too bad for an old man,” says Adamo with a smile. He is still active in the sport he so passionately loves in the form of judging at competitions. “It is good to see the sport growing and there is increased safety with the squat racks. Powerlifting is in a good space in the country and we still produce lifters that can compete with the very best in the world.”

Later in die week het HS Tygerberg egter met 14-29 sy rieme styfgeloop teen HS Swartland, terwyl Fairmont met 8-6 getroef is deur die Engelse toerspan van Exeter College.
