Black belts arrive from Japan

Eighteen candidates from the Welgemoed dojo, who were successfully promoted to Shodan Black Belt in December last year, just received their belts from Japan. It took a minimum of seven years of gruelling training to achieve this, and only about 4% of white belts ever pass a black belt grading. Kyokushinkan Welgemoed held their annual kata tournament recently. More than 140 students from all the dojos in the northern suburbs took part in age groups starting from under seven years. The standard was very high, according to the chief instructor Hennie Bosman. The tourna ment was held to prepare the students for the WP tournament to be held in May. Bronze for Samantha

Samantha Carstens from Francois du Plessis GojuKai School of Karate competed in her first KSA National Championships in Durban earlier this month, where she won a bronze medal for kumite. Here she is pictured with her coach, Sensei Charl Roux (left), and Francois du Plessis (right).
