Kontak Debbi by 021 555 2881 of stuur ’n e-pos na director@wcapd.org.za met navrae. Leak detection first step in saving H2O PROMOTION

heir business has a 100% success rate when it comes to finding and fixing a leak – one of the slyest water wasters and one that often goes undetected, spilling thousands of litres of water. Detecting leaks is serious business for Lutho Thontsi and his partner, Marcelle Meyeridricks-Reinecke, as they do their bit to fight the current water crisis facing Cape Town. The two are the brains behind the expert leak detection service Plumbleak Cape. Between these two “water whisperers” and their two assistants, they have attended to hundreds of homes, finding and fixing leaks with their expensive state-of-the-art equipment – “the best to do the job in the shortest period!” And their reward? That perfect score of 100% success! “Approximate fixures show a 0.5 mm hole loses 19.8 litres of water per hour. A 3 mm hole loses 489 litres, and a 7 mm hole spills about

2 358 litres of water per hour!” says Marcelle. “It is very important that people realise it is not always water usage that’s the problem, but that they may have an even bigger problem – a leak – that is causing their bill to skyrocket,” she says. “We always tell our clients to monitor their water meter, even as a preventative action. This is the first step in the leak detection process.” Lutho explains: “Any regular household that receives an astronomical water bill should check their water meter. Our advice is usually that the client leaves the toilet stop cock open on the first time, then check their meter. “They should also check their geyser to see if the water is running through the overflow. “If your meter is still running, close the stop cocks, make sure the geyser’s water isn’t running through the overflow; take a look at your meter. If the meter continues to run, you may have a problem with a leak,” he says. This is the point at which you should call Plumbleak so Lutho, the plumber, can work his magic with the water pipes. “It’s not about being A plumber; it’s about being THE plumber!” He says that once a leak is suspected, “I then take our acoustic equipment and ‘listen’ to the taps. If I pick up a leak noise, I pump tracer gas into the system. This is made up of hydrogen and nitrogen and is not dangerous at all, but it is excellent at pointing out the leaks to us,” he says. Spotting a leak is not as easy as it sounds though, he warns. “A lot of the time you cannot see a water leak, especially if it is outside. The water simply filters down. So often people call the wrong person for the job – you need a leak detector with the right equipment to find a leak, and not necessarily a plumber. “Often the client ends up paying much more

up” to find a leak, says Marcelle. “In most cases we find leaks within one square metre,” Marcelle says. The young company – it was launched in September last year – is very proud of their success rate thus far. Their prices are market related and competitive, so they won’t add further burden to an already enormous water bill, and they are growing from strength to strength. Apart from not wasting water, they also don’t waste clients’ time or money. “We find the leak within an hour and have it fixed within two to three hours. Our work also comes with a one-year guarantee and we supply our own material,” says Lutho. Plumbleak also installs grey water systems. “We’ve come across some shocking grey water systems. How you connect and install the system is very important,” says Marcelle. Their grey water systems are Lutho Thontsi and his Plumbleak partner, Marcelle Meyeriinstalled using 120-litre tanks, dricks-Reinecke. “Service and work standard is everything to as grey water contains bacteria us,” says Marcelle. and you want to prevent buildthan they would have if they’d just checked up and limit odours as far as possible. So the water needs to run out as soon as the tank in with an experienced leak detector first. “Do you know how often Plumbleak has is full, she says. So, what else is unique about Plumbleak, we had to help plumbers out? They regularly phone us for assistance because we have all ask. “We have BEE Level 2 accreditation,” says the right tools to find even the hardiest of Marcelle. And that’s not all. Marcelle jokes she must be the only woman in plumbing in the leaks,” Lutho says.
