PROBLEM PROPERTIES: BOSTON CENTRE THE WORST CASE IN BELLVILLE

Building battles MONIQUE DUVAL @monique_duval

B

ellville and Parow have been highlighted as “problematic areas” due to the high number of buildings in a bad state. This was revealed last week by the City of Cape Town – as was the fact that the Boston Centre, the building that used to house Home Affairs, was declared “the most problematic” in Bellville. This comes as the City announced last week they had officially handed over a site in Somerset West for demolition. According to a statement by Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, this was to be the first ever demolition of a listed problem building. Smith says the City’s Problem Building Unit is currently investigating 1292 of cases of possible problem buildings. “Problem buildings are found across the city; however, Bellville, Parow, Somerset West and Wynberg are some of the most problematic areas. Generally, buildings at risk of becoming problem properties are those where property owners have died or are absent.” Responding to questions, Area Central Mayco member, Siyabulela Mamkeli, says there are 44 declared problem buildings in Bellville and Parow. The problem properties are mostly residential buildings and there are various reasons why these buildings have been declared problem properties. “Generally speaking, however, problem building declarations come about because buildings are structurally unsafe, have been illegally occupied, pose health and safety risks to occupants and the public at large, or have become havens for antisocial behaviour and criminal activities.” He adds none of these buildings are close to being demolished like the Somerset West building. Mamkeli confirms Boston Centre is deemed the most problematic property in Bellville. “There are various violations across a number of bylaws.” V To page 2.

The donations are streaming into our office’s Chill Room in a very steady, “unchilled” stream – and we absolutely adore our generous readers for it! This is the direct result of our call to action for this month’s #We♥Tyger campaign – “Human Rights Month” – as celebrated by us at WP Media (also known as TygerBurger and our two sisters, People’s Post and City Vision). As a whole, we could not be more grateful for all the donations of clothing, blankets, shoes and even toiletries we’ve received to date! Our aim? To collect as many bags of warm and snuggly winter clothing as possible for people living on the streets. Even while some of us may not understand, support or agree with their way of life, all of us can lend a helping hand without judgment, because

FROM PAGE 1 In Parow, the most problematic building, Mamkeli says, is 13 Hillview Street. He says the unit recently put temporary measures in place to secure the property until a long-term solution can be found. When TygerBurger visited the property on Friday 17 March, a fence had been erected, and signage had been put up indicating that the property had been declared a problem building. A section of the roof was also observed to be missing – seemingly due to a fire. Mamkeli says these two properties have made it onto the City’s top-10 list of problem buildings. Subcouncil 6 chairperson, Councillor Rose Rau, says the subcouncil has formed a task team to address the issue of problem buildings in Bellville, in particular. “We have also been in contact with the

Western Cape Department of Social Development to investigate the living conditions of vulnerable individuals and children on the site, as they are mandated to enforce the provisions of the National Children’s Act.” She says they will be working closely with all interested and affected parties to try and resolve the issues emanating from this and other problem properties and urge property owners to work with the City. Meanwhile Smith says it is not sustainable for the City to clean up after every single errant property owner. “We simply do not have the funds, capacity or resources for it. “I therefore appeal to property owners to quite literally keep their houses in order,” he concluded. City eyes development of land in Groenvallei MONIQUE DUVAL @monique_duval

T

he City of Cape Town has completed a land availability study in Groenvallei to determine whether or not open fields are viable for future development. This follows a motion by ward councillor Brendan van der Merwe submitted in October 2013. The matter was discussed at the Subcouncil 6 meeting last week. According to the motion submitted by Van der Merwe, Groenvallei was developed during a time when public transport was popular among residents, and the securing of private vehicles at night was not a concern. According to the motion, the houses developed were “of a low-cost nature” and intended as government-owned accommodation for needy individuals and families. Van der Merwe states that as a result, town planners did not give special attention to the parking and storing of vehicles. He says while garages were provided, they were situated in a remote location separate from the homes. The motion further states that in the 1980s and early 1990s, local government,

as the owner of the residential units, began disposing of these assets, and residents were given the opportunity to purchase these homes. Over the years, Van der Merwe states, the needs have changed, and families occupying these homes have more than one vehicle per property. “Crime patterns have changed and these assets can no longer be stored safely at a distance. Garage units also do not have power supplied to them and therefore cannot be secured with electronic devices.” Van der Merwe also states that residents are now using public open spaces closer to their homes for parking, and he called on the City to look for a way to protect public open spaces and also to accommodate residents. During the subcouncil meeting, subcouncil chairperson, Rose Rau, said some interesting pockets of land had been discovered when surveying Groenvallei. She told TygerBurger the possible disposal of land was still in a conceptual stage and officials would have to establish whether the land is suitable for development. Association seeks to expand services MONIQUE DUVAL @monique_duval

T

he Tygerberg Association for Street People (Tasp) is one step closer to achieving their dream of expanding their services in Bellville. This follows a report tabled at the Bellville subcouncil meeting last week, indicating that the City of Cape Town intends to sell the building currently occupied by Tasp to the organisation. The building in Charl Malan Street is owned by the City and was formerly used as a clinic. Tasp has been leasing the building from the City for the past 14 years and has applied to purchase the building and expand it to provide more services, including a homeless shelter. According to the report, the City is looking at disposing of the property by selling it, but due to procedures the report seeks inprinciple approval of the disposal, coupled with a call for alternative proposals. The report states the single-storey building was originally constructed in the 1960s and comprises a reception area, consulting rooms, a kitchenette and ablution facilities. The report also states the property is valued at R1 650 000 and recommends that should the property be sold to Tasp, it be done at 25% of the total value under the City’s reduced policy rate. Speaking at the meeting, subcouncil chairperson, Rose Rau, questioned whether the proposed sale would have any impact on the plans to upgrade the Bellville Public Transport Interchange (PTI) due to its close proximity. The City official indicated that as most of the surrounding buildings had business and mixed-use zoning, they did not think it would be an issue. Rau said as the City rolls out its plans to improve the Bellville Central Business District (CBD), they also need to be mindful of the issues surrounding homeless people and the access they require to services offered by organisations like Tasp. Council-

lors voted in favour of the report’s recommendations. Speaking to TygerBurger after the meeting, Rau explained the call for alternative proposals other than the sale to Tasp will include comments from City departments to determine whether the building is needed by the municipality. Jan Majied, manager and social worker at Tasp, says the plans to purchase the building were first conceptualised five years ago, mainly due to a lack of space to conduct social intervention programmes and provide accommodation for homeless people, and a plan to make Tasp more self-sustainable. He says during winter, the building is filled with people seeking refuge, and while they do their best to accommodate as many people as possible, they even have to sacrifice office space to give homeless people a place to sleep for the night. The space constraints also impact on how many people can be accommodated during programmes aimed at rehabilitating homeless people and reuniting them with their families. Majied says many organisations face a continuous battle trying to source funding to keep social projects going, and at Tasp it is no different. A plan was conceptualised to purchase the building they have been renting for 14 years and develop it further. Tasp has already secured the funding to purchase and develop the building. “If you look at the space, you will see there are many of these tiny rooms that are too small for people to sleep in, so we use them for storage. The plan is to buy the building, demolish it and redevelop it with additional storeys.” Majied explains that by creating additional space, Tasp plans to lease some space to small businesses on the ground floor, with two remaining floors being used by the association and its partners. Tasp can then generate a steady income and focus on their work to assist homeless people. V What is your opinion on this article? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.

Viable alternative water generator exists! MONIQUE DUVAL @monique_duval

A

s dam levels continue to drop and residents across the city fret over the current water crisis, two local companies have teamed up to literally create water out of thin air. Local businessmen David Fulton of Red Konnect Business Systems and Greg Bredenkamp of Aquacello have been making waves in recent weeks as they go around proudly demonstrating how their Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) produces clean drinking water and even cleaner air. Last week the two men, whose businesses are situated in Bellville and Plattekloof, invited TygerBurger to a demonstration of how the AWG works and say while the technology is complex, the concept is pretty simple. The machine resembles a normal office water dispenser, yet comes in various models, sizes and designs for homes and offices. Fulton explains the clever science and biology behind the AWG. “In essence it takes in warm air through the side and cools it down to dew point. Condensation then starts to kick in and it drips into the bottom tank and what happens is, once it’s in there, it goes through a filtration process. It starts removing bacteria, e.coli and heavy metals, and then goes through what is known as reverse osmosis. He explains that depending on the size of the AWG purchased, a homeowner could opt to either completely cut off the municipal water supply or have a switchover between the two water supplies. Fulton says the machines, which cost around R20 000 for the smallest AWG, have already caught the attention of several banks that are willing to finance the product. Along with this, he says, banks have requested a maintenance cost. Bredenkamp says all AWGs come with a service plan enabling consumers to have their water generator checked once a year and the necessary parts replaced. Asked whether he thought he was sitting on a gold mine, Bredenkamp says: “I have been working for just over a year to complete the AWG so it can be sold commercially. This is not about money. This is about a precious resource that we are quickly running out of. What will my children and yours be drinking in the next 10 years? The problems with water supply are very real, and I believe we have this technology and so we should all be working to make this available to residents”. Making Bellville better MONIQUE DUVAL ielman Marais Park buzzed with excitement last week as volunteers got down and dirty as they joined the third Community Clean-up. The event, hosted by the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), saw volunteers from Bellville police, surrounding businesses, the VRCID, MES and learners from DF Malan High School collect and sort rubbish found around the park. This is the third Bellville clean-up hosted

by the GTP and participants got to see how much waste is being dumped in the neighbourhood. The event is aimed at giving all residents a unique opportunity to raise awareness on the litter problem. By joining in, the volunteers did their part to promote a cleaner and healthier Bellville. Bellville police also used the morph-touch machine on people found sleeping in the park to check whether they were wanted for any criminal cases. VWhat is your opinion on this article? City leads the fight against TB I

n a bid to increase testing rates for tuberculosis (TB), the City of Cape Town will be intensifying its outreach campaigns. According to a statement by Mayco member for social services, JP Smith, during TB Awareness Month the health department will conduct a door-to-door campaign to educate the public about TB and the importance of regular testing for high-risk individuals. He says Statistics South Africa recently revealed that TB killed more than 33 000 people in 2015 and that it has remained the leading cause of death for many South Africans over the past three years. “The statistics are unfortunate, because TB can be successfully treated. The most vulnerable groups are people living with HIV

and diabetes, household contacts of people with TB, pregnant women, and children under the age of five. “A range of health and socio-economic factors come into play and bedevil efforts to fight TB.” He says the treatment of drug-resistant TB continues to be a concern, although the City has made steady progress in speeding up the diagnosis of cases and improving the treatment success rate.

Awareness and testing events to be held There has been a decrease in the number of multi-drug-resistant and extreme drug-resistant cases since 2014. Smith says the Cape metro leads the way

Watch raises awareness

M

embers of the Hoheizen Neighbourhood Watch, accompanied by Bellville police, embarked on a crime awareness campaign last week. Bellville police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Henrietta van Niekerk, says the campaign was initiated by Des Willows of the watch and sector manager Captain Tobie Engelbrecht. Their focus was on a door-to-door walk to make residents aware of crime in the area and to recruit more members for the watch, she says. Van Niekerk says although crime has stabilised in this area, awareness and education are powerful in the fight to prevent crime, and 200 pamphlets informing residents about house break-ins were distributed. “An active neighbourhood watch is definitely an asset in combating crime, and we

urge the public to join their local neighbourhood watch structures. She says Bellville police have noted various crime patterns of which residents should be aware. The trends are as follows: . Break-ins often occur in the daytime, when residents are at work or school. . The most common period is between 09:00 and 15:00. . Front doors are the most reported entry point, as criminals often force doors open to gain entry. . Homes with open windows are frequent targets during summer months. . April and July top the charts for the most break-ins. . Items mostly taken include cash, electrical appliances, laptops, cellphones and jewellery. V What is your opinion on this article?

LOUIS MULDER EPOS

Report on Mabel Street awaited We the residents of Mabel Street would like to thank you for your follow-up article (“Mabel Street report to be released soon,” 08/03). We do sympathise with the residents of Avondale Street (Lynette Goosen). Just one major difference: Mabel Street ends with a 90-degree bend, at which point buses enter and block the entire road, forcing oncoming traffic to stop forcefully. There is nobody manning this event or any warning to oncoming traffic; basically the bus driver finds a gap and takes it. I urge anyone to spend just an hour observing the traffic flow in Mabel Street and you will sympathise with us as to what ‘we’ must put up with. We look forward to the positive outcome of the “soon-to-be -released report”. CHRIS HAYES Bellville

Midmar Road a shortcut for all It is not only the taxis that are a problem, but the other 100-plus vehicles that use Midmar Road as a short-cut between the Hadley Street robot and the La Belle robot. Midmar Road used to be a two-lane residential road, but is now a three-lane (and sometimes four-lane) highway, depending on how impatient a taxi driver is. Midmar Road was (and I believe still is) a five-ton-limit road; however, it is not unusual to see anything from shopping trolleys to heavy-duty delivery vans and even horse-and-trailer vehicles using it as a short-cut. This road (along with Hadley Street) was never designed for these excess masses or volumes, and these roads will soon start breaking up Hadley is already deteriorating. In peak hours it is virtually impossible to get in or out of your driveway, and the boom-boom from the full-blast taxi radios parked in front of our premises makes my house windows rattle. The worst are the taxi passengers who discard their refuse (plastic cooldrink bottles/polystyrene takeaway boxes, etc.) out of the windows onto the verges where we as residents have to go and clean up. If you say anything, prepare yourself for some ugly verbal abuse. I sincerely hope that the authorities will do something about this situation and soon. GERALD KLASEN Email

Taxi’s skep gevaar by Sanlamkantoor As poliseienaar van Sanlam wil ek graag my ontevredenheid uitspreek met die situasie by dié maatskappy se hoofkantoor in Strandweg.

‘IT gaming contest will keep youth off streets’

T

he Genesis Community IT Initiative (G-CITI), managing the I-CAN Centre in Elsies River, will host a Gaming Day Competition for the youth. Youth from various communities, including Elsies River, Parow, Ruyterwacht, Kraaifontein, Mitchell’s Plain, Bonteheuwel, Hanover Park, Delft, Wesbank and others, will participate in the competition. The competition will take place on Saturday 1 April from 09:00 to 14:00 at the I-CAN Centre in Halt Road. G-CITI envisions giving young people hope through technology. Llewellyn Scholtz, CEO of G-CITI, says many teenagers (millenials) do not know a life without technology, as it has been an integral part of their existence, in many cases for their entire lives. “For them, technology can seem like a giant playground with its devices, like toys to be explored and enjoyed. They are enthusiastic about technology, even if they do not realise it,” he says. Scholtz says this is why teens want the latest video games with the best graphics and the latest console – even if they already have others. “It is not greed as much as curiosity, as they want to see what is out there and play with it. “The population of young people who play video games is growing, and it keeps them off the streets. “It also becomes a stimulant for young people to think strategically in order to win a game,” he says. The organisation is in need of trophies, second-hand gaming consoles with games, a 32-inch TV screen, and meals to serve at lunch. Donations are welcome. VWhat is your opinion on this article? City: ‘Hurry up for grants for homeless’ The City of Cape is awaiting applications from organisations to receive money for the betterment of street people this winter. As the City heads towards the colder months, the City’s social services directorate is still awaiting applications from relevant organisations to respond to the needs of homeless people, by offering assistance to them and in this way helping to reduce the number of people out on the streets during the cold weather, according to a City statement. This year R700 000 has been set aside for the distribution of goods to qualifying organisations. This is in response to the increased demand for shelter for street people during the cold winter months The City will support non-governmental and non-profit organisations that provide shelter to street people, by supplementing their available resources to allow more indigent people to benefit from their services. The aim is to provide temporary mattress space during the winter period between May and September. Organisations will not be expected to create any permanent accommodation. Should a particular organisation meet the criteria, the City will provide Expanded Public Works Programme workers to assist with cooking and cleaning, the making of food parcels, and the supply of toiletries, mattresses and bedding. V Application forms are available from the City and the closing date is Thursday 23 March.

Kontak Debbi by 021 555 2881 of stuur ’n e-pos na director@wcapd.org.za met navrae. Leak detection first step in saving H2O PROMOTION

T

heir business has a 100% success rate when it comes to finding and fixing a leak – one of the slyest water wasters and one that often goes undetected, spilling thousands of litres of water. Detecting leaks is serious business for Lutho Thontsi and his partner, Marcelle Meyeridricks-Reinecke, as they do their bit to fight the current water crisis facing Cape Town. The two are the brains behind the expert leak detection service Plumbleak Cape. Between these two “water whisperers” and their two assistants, they have attended to hundreds of homes, finding and fixing leaks with their expensive state-of-the-art equipment – “the best to do the job in the shortest period!” And their reward? That perfect score of 100% success! “Approximate fixures show a 0.5 mm hole loses 19.8 litres of water per hour. A 3 mm hole loses 489 litres, and a 7 mm hole spills about

We’ve all seen leaks like this one that wastes copious amounts of water if unattended. Get your pipes leak-tested with Plumbleak.

2 358 litres of water per hour!” says Marcelle. “It is very important that people realise it is not always water usage that’s the problem, but that they may have an even bigger problem – a leak – that is causing their bill to skyrocket,” she says. “We always tell our clients to monitor their water meter, even as a preventative action. This is the first step in the leak detection process.” Lutho explains: “Any regular household that receives an astronomical water bill should check their water meter. Our advice is usually that the client leaves the toilet stop cock open on the first time, then check their meter. “They should also check their geyser to see if the water is running through the overflow. “If your meter is still running, close the stop cocks, make sure the geyser’s water isn’t running through the overflow; take a look at your meter. If the meter continues to run, you may have a problem with a leak,” he says. This is the point at which you should call Plumbleak so Lutho, the plumber, can work his magic with the water pipes. “It’s not about being A plumber; it’s about being THE plumber!” He says that once a leak is suspected, “I then take our acoustic equipment and ‘listen’ to the taps. If I pick up a leak noise, I pump tracer gas into the system. This is made up of hydrogen and nitrogen and is not dangerous at all, but it is excellent at pointing out the leaks to us,” he says. Spotting a leak is not as easy as it sounds though, he warns. “A lot of the time you cannot see a water leak, especially if it is outside. The water simply filters down. So often people call the wrong person for the job – you need a leak detector with the right equipment to find a leak, and not necessarily a plumber. “Often the client ends up paying much more

up” to find a leak, says Marcelle. “In most cases we find leaks within one square metre,” Marcelle says. The young company – it was launched in September last year – is very proud of their success rate thus far. Their prices are market related and competitive, so they won’t add further burden to an already enormous water bill, and they are growing from strength to strength. Apart from not wasting water, they also don’t waste clients’ time or money. “We find the leak within an hour and have it fixed within two to three hours. Our work also comes with a one-year guarantee and we supply our own material,” says Lutho. Plumbleak also installs grey water systems. “We’ve come across some shocking grey water systems. How you connect and install the system is very important,” says Marcelle. Their grey water systems are Lutho Thontsi and his Plumbleak partner, Marcelle Meyeriinstalled using 120-litre tanks, dricks-Reinecke. “Service and work standard is everything to as grey water contains bacteria us,” says Marcelle. and you want to prevent buildthan they would have if they’d just checked up and limit odours as far as possible. So the water needs to run out as soon as the tank in with an experienced leak detector first. “Do you know how often Plumbleak has is full, she says. So, what else is unique about Plumbleak, we had to help plumbers out? Students geared for skills exchange programme

N

ine Northlink College students will be jetting off to China as part of a scholarship programme that will equip them with the necessary skills and experience to improve their chances of being employed in the future. A South African agency and a Chinese agency have afforded the students this opportunity to leave for China mid-March as part of a group of 200 South African students, says Northlink spokesperson, Ivan Swart. They will be doing six months of university and theoretical training at Beijing Union University, while the other six months will see them gain practical experience in the related mechanical engineering field, he says. Says Trish van der Merwe, Northlink College deputy principal for innovation and development: “The College is excited to be able to have such great international partnerships that will not only benefit the college, but the students themselves. With this support, these nine students will be able to grow their skills set and become more employable within the trades and industries of which they are a part.” The nine students are: Vuyokazi Thukani, Nondumiso Mtshali, Shanise Jacobs, Shane Appollis, Keanu van Rooi, Damon van der Spuy and Kevin Hamman, all from the Wing-

field campus, and Xinzelele Yolokazi and Zizipho Nkonki from the Bellville campus. Says Damon van der Spuy, a Wingfield campus CNC student: “I grew up with a mother and father that did a lot for me. With my parents being taxi drivers they ensured that we always had enough. With this opportunity I would like to show my appreciation for what my parents did for me and for their support during my studies to become more employable and therefore give back to my parents”. Each of the nine students has his or her own reasons for looking forward to this opportunity, even if it means leaving behind families and fiancés for a year. Van der Merwe says: “The college is also proud to see that so many female students are tackling the mechanical engineering field, which has historically been seen as a male-dominated field of study”. Northlink is the largest Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college in the Western Cape, with seven campuses across the northern suburbs of Cape Town. For more information, contact Ivan Swart on 021 970 9047 or email iswart@northlink.co.za. VWhat is your opinion on this opportunity? Let us know at briewe@tygerburger.co.za.

From left are: Shane Appollis, Damon van der Spuy, Vuyokazi Thukani, Zizipho Nkoni, Leon Beech (Northlink College CEO and principal), Alana James (Northlink College Council chair), Xinselele Yolokazi, Shanise Jacobs, Kevin Hamman and Keanu van Rooi. Absent: Nondumiso Mtshali.

S

uid-Afrika se eerste melktertkampioen is pas aangewys. Rita Schuster van Pretoria is Donderdagaand met dié titel bekroon by ’n spoggeleentheid by Deeghuys se proekombuis in Durbanville. Melktert is so Suid-Afrikaans soos biltong, braaivleis en koeksisters. Dit is as’t ware ’n kultuurskat, sê Henna Jordaan, bemarkingsbestuurder by Deeghuys.

Women’s network tackles challenges ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie

Glenroma Women’s Empowerment Network (Gwen) in Bellville South seeks to address the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment through programmatic interventions. According to the founder of Gwen, Renay Ogle, the organisation’s objectives are short, medium and long term and include addressing hunger, learner support programmes, unemployment, domestic violence, spiritual guidance, social grants, child justice, substance abuse and maintenance issues. “We are aligned with and seek to make a meaningful impact in pushing back the frontiers of the triple challenge,” she says. Ogle says their vision, mission, core values and strategic objectives are aligned with legislative imperatives such as, but not limited to, the Constitution of South Africa (Act 108 of 1996), the Children’s Act (Act 38 of 2005) and the Child Justice Act (Act 75 of 2008). Ogle says their work is also aligned with national, provincial and local governmental policies, programmes and priorities. “It is a reality that no singular institutional imperative has ever achieved any significant success in terms of developmental policy implementation. Every success or achievement is derived through synergy,” she says. Ogle says they work closely with the police, neighbourhood watches, schools, religious structures, universities and the

community police forum. She says during one of their programmes, about 40 learners were identified by local primary and high schools to take part in a programme aimed at building youth resilience. “The learners were taught about empowering themselves and standing up for what they believe in, and also about crime and why not to get involved. “They were very open and realised that they in most cases have similar backgrounds, and in that way it brought them closer. They were given leadership roles to make them realise they are the leaders of their future and that they can use their skills to uplift others,” she says. Many of the children raised issues that included crime and drug abuse, drug dealers putting children’s lives at risk because of all types of crimes connected to this activity, gangsterism, shooting, bullying, teenage pregnancy and poverty. “We spoke about what they need, which includes more sporting facilities, social workers, communication with the police, youth programmes and learner support for school work,” Ogle says. She says based on what was discussed in the programme, it will help the organisation to better plan in future and see how they can address these issues. “We will roll out programmes based on the needs of the learners and their families to ensure that we can achieve a better outcome for all,” she says. Marion dankbaar ná haar rillerjaar MARITA MEYER

“E

k doen nie comedy nie. Ek doen life.” That’s it.

Marion se topvyf-lewenslesse is: 1. “Haastigheid is regtig ’n euwel. Sodra jy haastig raak, raak jy angstig.

Jean-Louis, ’n selferkende “werkholis”, volg nie juis resepte nie. Hy gebruik dit slegs as ’n riglyn. Ek weet mos in my kop hoe dit gaan smaak!”

Die man agter Die Boer se treffer-geregte, Jean-Louis Geldenhuys.

“Brood en Coke was my dood. Sommige vlietend, ander jaarliks. Sy tien jaar by Die Boer was veronderstel om net vir ’n jaar te dien as ’n pit stop.

100 % SUCCESS FINANCIAL FIX EXPERT MAMA MADINA & SHAMIL

After 15-painful years” HERBALIST: NASEEF BROUGHT PEACE IN MY BROKEN UP FAMILY For many years I suffered a lot in my marriage. I had daily fights with my husband and had no peace because of my jealous family; friends and my In-laws also hated me. I felt betrayed and heart broken by my own people, sleepless nights and stress nearly killed me. I tried many healers, but they all failed me, until I heard about Herbalist: Naseef on a spiritual program on the radio. With the only R100 I had in life, Herbalist: Naseef took my fortune readings and surprised me by telling accurately about my husband’s hidden family secrets. He then made special prayers and gave me powerful herbal Indian Holy water for cleansing and special oil. Within just a few days a miracle happened: all my enemies and family in-laws, who hated, came back to make peace with me. After suffering 15 painful years, today we are the happiest couple and I am also grateful because of Herbalist: Naseef. His special prayer of blessings has made me become a successful business lady.

My name is Asanda from Fishoek and my no is 064 000 3450. Life is beautiful when you meet someone who keeps her word and changes life for better. Money is no longer my problem since MAMA SARA blessed me with lots of money in my account. In years have been robbed by fake Doctors who demanded money from me without help. When I first read the testimony about MAMA SARA, I never believed, untill I tried to call her, just to find out her services. She explained about how people get rich through Short boys, Magic Wallet, Ring money, money in the house or Account and many more. I was interested in getting money in my Account since I was far from her. She asked me to provide her with my account and my names and R1000 within 30 minutes R350,000 notified in my phone. Then I went to the bank even though I was scared but there were no questions. My husband also tried Money in the house and he was shocked to see the bag full of money.Thank you MAMA SARA for saving my life. You are indeed ablesser.

Die o.19A-rugbyprogram (A-veld) is: HTS Bellville t Fairbairn (08:00), Kasselsvlei t Bredasdorp (09:10), Bosmansdam t Bonnievale (10:20), Edgemead t Martin Oosthuizen, HS Strand t Labori (12:40), Fairmont t Goudini (13:50),HS Bellville t Milnerton (15:00), Brackenfell t Outeniqua (16:10); B-veld: J.G. Meiring t Dirkie Uys (10;20), Melkbosstrand t Grabouw (11:30), President t Eben Dönges (12:40). – (Sarel Burger)

ith the cars in the national Extreme Festival and the South African championship DEOD Super GP motorcycles on the same programme for the first time in three years, Killarney is preparing for the recoil from a double-barrelled blast on Saturday 25 March. Heading the festival list is the return of the turbocharged Sasol Global Touring Cars (GTCs). And with a large field that is said to be to be a whack faster than they were during their debut meeting in the Cape last year, some exciting racing can be expected. While predicting a winner is not going to be easy, partisan Kapenaars will undoubtedly favour local hotshot Johan Fourie in his EPS Courier BMW-2, as he challenges reigning GTC champion, the Eastern Cape’s Michael Stephen (Engen Xtreme Audi A3). Of course, they could both be upset by the likes of Gennaro Bonafede, who was runnerup in the 2016 title chase in his Sasol BMW, and Production kingpin Daniel Rowe, who is moving up to the senior class in a VW Jetta. The GTCs are also going to be relaunching the Production Class as GTC-2 for the

2017 season. Here the battle will probably be between Killarney’s Dayne Angel in a lone Honda Civic, and a selection of Volkswagen GTis and powerful 2-litre Minis. And while the Crossley & Webb Sports and GT events do not enjoy national status, their standard of racing certainly justifies it. The centre of attention is almost certainly going to be the question of whether Craig Jarvis can keep his brutal 8.4-litre V10 Dodge Viper ahead of a gangbang from three Lotus Exiges in the hands of Dawie Joubert, Philip Booysen and Ian Long. Jarvis was forced to use his spurs and whip to secure a well-deserved overall victory during the opening Power Series meeting. On other occasions the super-slick Joubert has been first to the flag. So all bets are off – Saturday could go either way. Other interesting Sports & GT entries include one from Johan Engelbrecht, then Scois Joubert can be seen in an almost bodyless Ariel Atom, while Steve Humble has the advantage of superior driving ability to compensate for his Juno S2000’s moderate power output. Ladies are represented by Paige Lindenberg in the single-seater Investchem Formula 1600 class and VW Polo driver Tasmin Pepper.

GONE FISHIN’: YOUNG ANGLER MAKING WAVES

Angling for the big one STEHAN SCHOEMAN

F

or most of us, fishing is a way to get away from the hustle and bustle of city living – a time to relax and forget about the pressures of life. Not so for Gareth Dahl, who takes fishing very seriously. The 15-year-old Grade 9 learner at Melkbosstrand High School, who is a member of the Two Oceans Angling Club, recently achieved national colours in shore angling. Gareth represented the Western Province u.16 team at the South African Shore Angling Association (SASAA) nationals in the Southern Cape, ending in fifth position, making him only the second WP u.16 angler in 10 years to receive Protea colours. “It is still unreal – I think when I get capped and receive my blazer and tie, reality will sink in. I am very honoured to be part of the Protea team, and the fact that WP hasn’t produced many SA u.16 anglers makes it an even bigger honour. But I worked

hard off-season and my dream was always to make the SA team,” says Gareth. Coming from a family that enjoys fishing, it was only a matter of time before the bug bit. “I have always loved fishing. I started bass fishing competitively when I was 10 and received provincial colours the following year. “I decided at the age of 12 to move to rock and surf angling, since it has always been my passion, and I received my provincial colours (WP u.16) at the age of 13. “Fishing is relaxing yet tough. Dealing with natural elements that are out of your control, and not knowing what you are going to catch, is a huge excitement. I love being out in nature, in an area that doesn’t ‘belong’ to humans but to marine life, and we need to respect that,” says Gareth. Gareth fishes almost every weekend, with inter-club competitions every three weeks.

When asked if there is a science to being a good angler or whether it is down to pure luck, Garth says it is maybe a bit of both and that fitness, technique, practice, bait presentation, gear and knowledge of how to read the water all play a major role. Growing the sport and conservation is close to his heart. “At this stage it would be great to be an ambassador for the younger fishermen, encouraging them to get involved in the sport. I want to guide and teach them and pass on the knowledge that I have gained. I also want to encourage marine conservation, getting anglers to fish for the enjoyment of it and not take everything out of the sea, and to work on a catchand-release basis. Apart from angling, Gareth plays first-team cricket for his school and enjoys running long distance. He is also a regular at the gym. Velddrift will host the next WCSAA schools mini league competition on Saturday 29 April.

Gareth Dahl from Melkbosstrand became only the second Western Province u.16 shore angler in 10 years to receive national colours.
