One death in a weekend of fires ANDRÉ BAKKES

The fire that destroyed Midmar Bottle Store on the corner of Boundary and Koeberg roads last week Friday ushered in a busy weekend for the City of Cape Town’s disaster response team. Nine other fires in Cape Town left 111 people displaced. A busy weekend was waiting in the wings when the Disaster Operations Centre received a call at 04:10 last Friday, informing them that the Midmar Bottle Store was on fire. No injuries were reported, but the con-

tents of the store were completely destroyed. “It was discovered that the cause of the fire was arson,” says Fire and Rescue Services’ Liezl Moodie. The case is currently being investigated. Then on Friday night the first of three fires in Wallacedene broke out. “At 19:52 a fire occurred at Wallacedene. It involved 11 shacks leaving 27 people displaced,” says Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, Head of Systems Integration and Special Projects. “The next one in Wallacedene happened at 18:03 on Saturday. It destroyed two informal structures, leaving eight people displaced. Then at 16:38 on Sunday a fire in

Mphandle Street destroyed two structures,” he said. Two fires in Elsies River, the first at 11:49 on Saturday and the second at 16:36, left three people displaced. One person died as a result of a fire in Gugulethu at 03:00 on Sunday morning. According to Solomons-Johannes the deceased was “burned beyond recognition”. “The City’s disaster response teams provided food parcels, clothing, vanity packs, blankets and building material to the affected victims. The cause of these fires is undetermined at this stage. The City of Cape Town with local law enforcement authorities will probe an investigation into the preceding events to establish the causes.”

Girls protected from cancer More than 90% of nine-year-old girls in the Western Cape are now protected against HPV related cervical cancer. This is the result of an HPV vaccination campaign, organised by the Western Cape Government Health in collaboration with local primary schools. Western Cape health minister Theuns Botha stated, “The uptake by all role players of the immunisation has been wonderful. HPV related cervical cancer is responsible for the death of many young women. We hope that through this vaccination, when these young girls are wives and mothers, we will see a significant decline in the incidence of HPV related cervical cancer. “This not only speaks into our goal of improving the wellness of our society, but also to the financial implications for households who need to care for a family member who is ill. Well done to all those involved in achieving this remarkable coverage.” The HPV campaign took place in two

rounds, the first round saw coverage of 87% whereas the second round in October found that not only had a number of girls become eligible for the vaccination, but many more parents signed consent forms thus enabling their daughters to be vaccinated. This small group (approximately 13% of the total group), will receive their booster shot during the 2015 campaign which will take place in February and March and again in September and October. Immunisation is available free of charge at all health facilities and at a number of partner organisations. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation is currently only offered to girls attending public schools and are nine years old during Grade 4. Those parents who wish to have their older daughters vaccinated can consult their local pharmacy. Vaccination remains the safest method to prevent illness, Botha says.
