ADVENTURE: ELDERLY COUPLE REACH DREAM OF CLIMBING TO EVEREST BASE

A birthday at 17 000ft ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

T

here was nothing odd about the way Kruben Moodliar celebrated his 71st birthday. He woke up at 03:00 to the sound of sherpas singing happy birthday in Nepalese, accepted a “blessed scarf” and then walked 14 and a half hours though freezing rain and sleet. OK, perhaps it was slightly odd. Kruben and his 68-year-old wife, Sham, recently became one of the oldest couples ever to climb up to Mount Everest’s Base Camp. At 5 364 metres above sea level, it is well over five times higher than what Table Mountain is. “Averaging 12 to 14 hours of climbing daily, it was 200% more difficult than we ever imagined it would be,” says Sham. The trip lasted 16 exhausting days. “But we had set our minds set on it and there was no way either of us was going to give up,” continues the ever-determined Sham. “When times got really tough we egged each other on. On the mountain there is just

you, your partner and your creator. Nothing else matters. It makes one very contemplative and it crystallises the essence of life. It was very emotional, a hugely spiritual experience.” Sham and Kruben, residents of Oasis Retirement Resort in Century City, underwent an intense 29 week training programme before their adventure, which was designed by Oasis’ bio-kinetic trainer. “It changed every four weeks. We started in the gym at 06:00, working on the treadmill, and later walked 50 laps in the pool dragging buckets behind us. We also walked up 10 flights of stairs ten times a day wearing weighted vests,” remembers Sham “fondly”. “Later we walked round and round the Central Park field with tractor tyres filled with stones tied around our waists! We’re very grateful to Chris Blackshaw of the Century City Property Owners’ Association for affording us this opportunity. We hope we didn’t ruin the grass!” Weeks of training finally paid off when they completed their journey. V To page 2.

Sham (68) and Kruben Moodliar (71) of Century City decided the best way to celebrate his recent birthday was to climb to Mount Everest’s South Base Camp.

Bakkie wat sonder petrol staan, laat SAPD se oë rek BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

By nadere ondersoek is ’n vrou alleen in die motor gevind.

FROM PAGE 1 “We were first captivated by the majesty of Everest when we saw it at sunset from an eight-seater Cessna some years ago. It’s the most impressive thing to see. It has an incredible magnetism to it – it literally gave us goosebumps. And somewhere it lodged at the back of the mind that we needed to spend more time in the Himalayas,” she continues. One of the two experienced sherpas told the couple that he had never taken anyone their age to Base Camp before. There are so many memories that will stay with Sham and Kruben forever.

The sherpas sang to Kruben and presented him with a blessed scarf they got from a monastery, as well as a bouquet of mountain anemone flowers picked the night before. For the first few hours the silver glow of the moon was their companion and then they were battered by rain and sleet. What was supposed to be an eight hour journey to Base Camp and back became a treacherous 14 hour trek. As for their next adventure, Sham jokes by saying that the family hopes and prays they won’t be scaling a volcano.

“Due to the numerous landslides and so forth there is no path as such. You have to step over huge boulders testing each one with your sticks to ensure it is safe to step on. Walking on the mountain in daylight is scary enough, but by night was another experience. These sherpas are unreal, how they know their way over boulders, through rivers and ice is unbelievable!” Creaking glaciers and the roaring of distant avalanches were also unforgettable. On Kruben’s birthday, and the day of the final trek to Base Camp, they got up at 03:00 to start the climb from Gorakshep.

ormer” and “heroin addict” rarely go together. Yet Craig O’Brien mastered this feat. Now, after numerous stints in prison and learning the humility of homelessness, he runs a home for recovering addicts in Kraaifontein. Craig attended The Settlers High and grew up in Boston. His story is not unlike many others one may have heard before: the almost 50-year-old comes from a good, conservative home, he says. “But I’ve always been very inquisitive”. This, coupled with a rebellious and self-proclaimed “naughty” nature, saw Craig start his drug experimentation with dagga. He tells a captivating story of how he was constantly in trouble at school, expelled, and later became a military conscript because his father “knew a Corporal at the Castle”. All he wanted to do was become an air steward. Or do art, “but my dad wouldn’t let me”.

He tells how “chasing the dragon” eventually turned into injecting intravenously while he could still afford his habit. But then he was retrenched. “I was going for interviews, being told I’m too white, too old. I started eating into my savings, they got depleted; eventually we started to pawn things. “I was beginning to hate my life now. My life was this drug.” With no job and no money to support his habit, he turned to crime

second time around, he met house Father Rodney Pringle, who introduced Craig to a new spiritual journey. “I couldn’t handle the happy-to-do fake pastors in my cell – I knew they were rapists,” he says. He came out of jail earlier than expected. He didn’t know “Mr Zuma was going to give us all amnesty,” Craig laughs. Storm had taken a lover, albeit with his blessing. Craig eventually ended up at The Haven night shelter in Bellville. His life was changed. He eventually became clean by avoiding drug dealers around the shelter.

Knack for troubled teens Tucked safely under the wings of manager Sharon Malan, he progressed from cook to supervisor. Craig soon realised he had a knack for working with troubled youngsters, especially addicts. His heart and ears seemed to be just the right receptacle to absorb their troubles. A job opening came up with the people from the social development organisation Metro Evangelical Services, or MES. “Sharon urged me to go for the interview,” he said. One death in a weekend of fires ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

The fire that destroyed Midmar Bottle Store on the corner of Boundary and Koeberg roads last week Friday ushered in a busy weekend for the City of Cape Town’s disaster response team. Nine other fires in Cape Town left 111 people displaced. A busy weekend was waiting in the wings when the Disaster Operations Centre received a call at 04:10 last Friday, informing them that the Midmar Bottle Store was on fire. No injuries were reported, but the con-

tents of the store were completely destroyed. “It was discovered that the cause of the fire was arson,” says Fire and Rescue Services’ Liezl Moodie. The case is currently being investigated. Then on Friday night the first of three fires in Wallacedene broke out. “At 19:52 a fire occurred at Wallacedene. It involved 11 shacks leaving 27 people displaced,” says Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, Head of Systems Integration and Special Projects. “The next one in Wallacedene happened at 18:03 on Saturday. It destroyed two informal structures, leaving eight people displaced. Then at 16:38 on Sunday a fire in

Mphandle Street destroyed two structures,” he said. Two fires in Elsies River, the first at 11:49 on Saturday and the second at 16:36, left three people displaced. One person died as a result of a fire in Gugulethu at 03:00 on Sunday morning. According to Solomons-Johannes the deceased was “burned beyond recognition”. “The City’s disaster response teams provided food parcels, clothing, vanity packs, blankets and building material to the affected victims. The cause of these fires is undetermined at this stage. The City of Cape Town with local law enforcement authorities will probe an investigation into the preceding events to establish the causes.”

Girls protected from cancer More than 90% of nine-year-old girls in the Western Cape are now protected against HPV related cervical cancer. This is the result of an HPV vaccination campaign, organised by the Western Cape Government Health in collaboration with local primary schools. Western Cape health minister Theuns Botha stated, “The uptake by all role players of the immunisation has been wonderful. HPV related cervical cancer is responsible for the death of many young women. We hope that through this vaccination, when these young girls are wives and mothers, we will see a significant decline in the incidence of HPV related cervical cancer. “This not only speaks into our goal of improving the wellness of our society, but also to the financial implications for households who need to care for a family member who is ill. Well done to all those involved in achieving this remarkable coverage.” The HPV campaign took place in two

rounds, the first round saw coverage of 87% whereas the second round in October found that not only had a number of girls become eligible for the vaccination, but many more parents signed consent forms thus enabling their daughters to be vaccinated. This small group (approximately 13% of the total group), will receive their booster shot during the 2015 campaign which will take place in February and March and again in September and October. Immunisation is available free of charge at all health facilities and at a number of partner organisations. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation is currently only offered to girls attending public schools and are nine years old during Grade 4. Those parents who wish to have their older daughters vaccinated can consult their local pharmacy. Vaccination remains the safest method to prevent illness, Botha says.

Books to inspire bookworms

New app shows winelands’ best offerings

The Rotary Club of Blouberg help various schools in the area by buying books for the top performers. They recently handed over books to grade 8 to grade 12 learners at Buren High School and also younger outstanding achievers at Ysterplaat OPrimaery School. These books are usually presen ted to the learners at the schools’ annual prizegiving.

An interactive new app, which maximises tourists’ experience of the Western Cape winelands, has been launched. Marthinus Botha from iKineo, the Cape Town-based agency that developed the app, called Sideways, said it is free and offers a powerful, sophisticated search engine which provides the perfect guide to the winelands of the Western Cape. “You can search by keywords, region and filters, and whether you’re looking for a wine farm with a fireplace for winter warmth or a family-friendly, award-winning restaurant in a specific area, the app will give you exactly what you need,” says Botha. Each wine farm’s profile page brims with useful information, from opening times to available wines, and even GPS co-ordinates that link to your smart phone’s own navigation software. “Sideways is a simple, but powerful solution we created to make the winelands of the Western Cape more accessible to everyone. It guides visitors to instantly find the perfect adventure, while simultaneously boosting the profile of the winelands as a world class destinati-

Ysterplaat Primary School children also received books. Buren High School learners who performed admirably academically each received a book from the rotarians.

on to local and international tourists alike,” says Botha. Another function that sets the app apart is its updated and themed curated lists, boasting fun line ups and must-see activities. “Not only can users feed off curated lists, but they can create their own lists by adding their favourite wine farms, adventure activities, meals and estates, making it easy to relive or share their good times with others,” he says. Wesgro marketing officer Judy Lain said the app is not only designed to discover wine farms and restaurants, it allows tourists to discover adventure activities like running or cycling trails or the best picnic or sundowner spots. A rewards system allows visitors to check in with their smart phone at specific wine farms and so accumulate points which unlock rewards like meal discounts, free wine tastings and so on. The app is available for download on iPhone devices from the App Store and will be available on Google Play for Android devices in early 2015. V Visit wesgro.co.za, for more information.

Man dies after being hit by train at Ysterplaat A man was killed when he was hit by a train at the Ysterplaat station last week Friday. ER24 paramedics, as well as other services, arrived at the scene and found the patient lying on the track in a serious condition. According to ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, the man had sustained severe inju-

ries to both his legs and injuries to his chest. “Paramedics began their assessment, providing the patient with advanced life support to stabilize his weakening vital signs. Unfortunately, after a 20 minute resuscitation, the patient was declared dead,” says Meiring. The cause of the incident is not yet known.

Field workers to help homeless people BRENDEN RUITER

@ruitervaniewind

T

he City of Cape Town will deploy a team of dedicated field workers over the festive season to assist with any street people-related matters, while 14 Local Networks of Care will operate in various communities to deter migration to the streets. Out of the 9 000 homeless people in Cape Town, an estimated 120 reside in Goodwood, but homelessness is increasing every day. So says Suzette Little, mayco member for social development and early childhood development. “It is true that more and more homeless people are taking to the streets of Cape Town and Goodwood also experiences this influx. The public parks, unoccupied buildings and wide verges as in Vasco Boulevard, Wiener Street Park, Hanekom Park, parking area behind Shoprite Checkers in Hugo Street, Rail reserve near Monte Vista Station, throughout N1 City, footway Dingle and Wallace Street are the places they stay,” says Little. She says the city’s law enforcement units are constantly engaged in removing people from places where residents complain of the street people’s presence, with very little obvious effect. “These people just move to another place within Goodwood. The reason they return is that it is to their advantage to remain in Goodwood on the street. Well meaning and compassionate residents store the street people’s belongings and

bedding, give them food and drink, employ them for domestic and gardening chores and allow them to scavenge through the refuse bins in for recyclable items. The proceeds from the recyclables and gifts or donations help these vulnerable people to remain in Goodwood. “One motor dealer protected the street people from being removed by law enforcement officials, by maintaining these people were regarded as “security guards”. Law enforcement officers were recently verbally abused and chased away by property owners on Vasco Boulevard when attempting to remove vagrants as a result of their anti-social behaviour. These actions by residents and property owners conflict with the efforts of law enforcement,” argues Little. The city and province has embarked on a “Give Responsibly” programme in which residents are given the option to become involved with government to address the plight of street people. “To alleviate the plight of street people the churches of Goodwood during the 1990s established the Elim Nightshelter as a place of safety. The demand for accommodation at this nightshelter exceeds the supply of space. A complicating factor is that many of these street people refuse to go to the nightshelter because they would be subjected to the discipline of being of sober habits and would have to pay a nominal fee for a plate of food, a bed and the opportunity to wash.” V The City’s dedicated Street People Call Centre can be reached on 0800 827 201.

City Carols service held at Central Park in the heart of Century City. The evening’s festivities kicked off with a range of kiddie activities including free rides on the Ratanga Train while families picnicked on the lawns. The carols service and production was organised by one of the Century City-based churches, the Shofar Church. Entry to the event was free but guests were asked to bring a donation of toys or books for the Masikululeke Creche in neighbouring Joe Slovo Park and guests gave generously with over 20 black bags of goodies collected including toys, books, puzzles, games and clothes. Here the excited children at the creche in Joe Slovo Park receive their goodies.

Lego art show wows viewers ANDRÉ BAKKES #andrebakkes

Some people use lego to build dinosaurs that look like spaceships, other use it to build houses that look like spaceships. Children will relate to the fact that no matter what they build, it eventually looks like a spaceship.

Nathan Sawaya builds dinosaurs that look like dinosaurs and houses that look like houses. His remarkable art is now on show at V&A Waterfront and is most definitely going to stun onlookers. TygerBurger was invited to the exhibition during a media launch and it is sure to go down as one of the most jaw-dropping

launches of all time. It features up to 70 sculptures created from more than a million Lego bricks by this American artist.

Tickets to the exhibition, which ends on 28 February, are available from Computicket at R140 for adults and R95 for kids. Entry for children under two is free.

Famous Roman statues are almost as beautiful as those made of marble.

Horses create dinner courses The Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas run at Kenilworth last Saturday not only yielded one of its most exciting winners in recent times, the mighty Mike de Kock-trained Majmu, but the race meeting was also well attended and a significant amount of money was raised for a charity in Observatory. Majmu powered away from the field in exhilarating fashion in the closing stages of the prestigious R1 million race, having

been given a confident ride by jockey Anthony Delpech. Not even the unfortunate late scratching of the Cape’s best filly, Cold As Ice, could put a damper on the impression she created. Kenilworth Racing handed over a cheque of R100 000 to the Peninsula School Feeding Association. The money will be enough to feed 255 children lunch and breakfast for a year.

Thieves posing as workers strip public property MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

They come in neon vests as if they are council workers, when in actual fact they are stealing from the council – and residents – while pretending to be hard at work. This was the case when Janeen Ackermann van Heerden recently saw some suspicious activity in Boston at an electricity substation while on her way to fetch her son from a playdate. “I was driving past the substation in 13th Avenue in Boston when I saw one man inside the fencing and one standing on the outside,” Janeen said. “The one on the outside had a wheelbarrow and was continuously accepting a filled spade from the one on the inside,” she said. “I called my husband to check this out, seeing as it was 18:00 in the evening – who works at that time, digging for things?” she said. Janeen realised to her shock that they were busy “loading gravel from the substation” into the wheelbarrow. Janeen’s husband went out and followed the group of men to a private residence where they stopped and tried to sell the gravel. “My husband said they wanted to sell the gravel for R1500, but then he alerted the resident that it was stolen property. The resident then wanted nothing further to do with it.” She said her husband went to look for patrolling police officers and saw a second bakkie. “He counted about 15 men in vests,” she said. Her husband told the men to leave the area, which they did. “I reckon the council should follow this up. It was their property that was stolen.” Pierre Gouws, owner of the District Group of security companies, told TygerBurger his team had seen this same modus operandi at city parks, which were being stripped bare.

“On a regular basis we come across people with bakkies, orange lights and reflective bibs, that look like people working, but are not. They do this because people generally think that it is municipality workers or subcontractors doing work,” Pierre said. “On many occasions they are the people that are stealing from the community or stripping the communities and City Of Cape Town of its assets.” He said they found more and more car guards, actually “trolley pushers” with the same vests on. The thieves were also known to put orange cones around park equipment “to make it look official”. In an incident on 3 November, Pierre’s team investigated a callout of a bakkie, with an orange light on its roof, parked in front of a Montague driveway. “making it look like a maintenance vehicle”. He says the occupants were standing outside the bakkie pretending to be fixing it. When security officers appeared, they sped off. The occupants were followed and pulled over by the security staff at a business in Monte Vista Boulevard, with the Goodwood police hot on their heels, Pierre says. Then, in June last year, an incident was recorded where three suspects were arrested, also in the Monte Vista are, for removing the swings and frames in the park at Algoa Crescent there, Pierre said. The suspects were tampering with the swings and told an approaching security officer “they were working for a sub-contractor and they needed to remove the swings and frames”, Pierre says. The Goodwood police were alerted again, and arrested the three. Captain Fienie Nimb, Bellville police spokesperson, said no charges of damage to public property, or sale of stolen property relating to the Boston incident had been laid at the Bellville police station.

This is the first bakkie whose passengers allegedly stole gravel from an electricity substation in Boston.

This is the second bakkie spotted by Janeen’s husband operating in Boston.

V Dogs Against Drugs kan gekontak word by 082 222 3950 (Werner) of 084 567 7150 (Estelle). Besoek hulle ook op Facebook by www.facebook.com/edudogtraining.

A total of 47 teams from 20 depots are responsible for repairing potholes and in at least 80% of the cases the teams meet the City’s own benchmark of fixing a pothole within 72 hours of it being reported. So says the City’s mayoral committee member for transport for Cape Town (TCT), Brett Herron. “This is a very high standard to maintain, given the fact that the city’s road network comprises 10 629 kilometres and every inch of it has to be managed by TCT. One must admit that it is quite an achievement that over 80% of potholes are fixed within three days when each of the 47 teams has to repair at least 260 potholes every month.” Residents report at least 250 potholes to the City’s call centre every week and the other potholes are identified by the supervisory staff at TCT’s depots. “A C3 (fault reporting notification) is generated for every pothole that a resident reports via the City’s fault reporting system. This report is sent to the relevant area depot, which passes it on to the responsible crew to undertake the repairs. This administrative process can take up to a day, but in most cases it is sorted out within a matter of hours. The team will inspect the site and make the road safe for road users, either by repairing the pothole there and then or by demarcating the area if an immediate repair is not possible. “Sometimes delays are caused by incle-

ment weather, the unavailability of asphalt to fix the potholes, or the breakdown of equipment. However, one of our biggest challenges is that the wrong information in relation to the location and address of the pothole is often reflected on the C3 notification system. In this instance residents can greatly assist TCT by providing the correct addresses.’’ The City does proactive maintenance work as well, such as the resealing and resurfacing of roads to prevent potholes. “The majority of potholes form when water penetrates the asphalt due to the cracking of the road’s asphalt surfacing; when roads have to carry higher volumes of traffic than they were originally designed to carry; or when routine maintenance has not taken place due to funding availability. Grey water discharge onto roads and other sources of water such as natural underground springs are also contributing factors. “In the current financial year, TCT will spend nearly R464 million on road maintenance, of which R110 million is allocated for the repair of potholes. We urge our residents to please report potholes to the City, either by phoning our call centre on 0860 103 089 or by using the TCT app (mobile application). TCT relies on residents to be our eyes and ears on the ground, given the fact that 81% of our road network (8 649 kilometers) is suburban roads,’’ says Herron.

Santa Clause arrived on a Fire Engine.

Christmas cheer for young The Richwood Sport and Recreation Centre was filled with early Christmas celebration and jubilant cheers recently. The Elundini Special Care Centre located in Dunoon celebrated its annual Christmas party culminating in a graduation of learners clad in full graduation regalia. The day was filled with children’s laughter, the sugar-scented smell of candy floss, Santa Clause arriving on a fire engine and distributing Christmas goodies to the children of Elundini. The general entertainment of the day included a ballet, sports activities, activity tables such as decorate-acupcake, play dough fun, loom bands and face painting.

The day would not have been possible without the joint collaboration of the dedicated staff of Elundini, all sponsors, Santa’s helpers in the kitchen and the Milnerton Fire Department all lending a hand to bring Christmas cheer to the children of Elundini. Founded in 2008 by principal Indy Kawana who saw the growing need for a special care centre, the Elundini Centre was established to meet the physical and emotional needs of mentally and physically challenged children in the areas of Dunoon, Table View and Joe Slovo Park. Today the centre caters for 100 children and provides three nutritious meals per day for all learners.

Waggle and Walk: The 21st SPCA MyPlanet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon took place recently

at the Cape Academy for Maths and Science in Constantia and saw over 1 300 people and nearly 1 000 dogs take part in the walk. Putting their best paws forward, participants managed to raise roughly R140 000 for the SPCA – funds that will be used to protect and care for animals over this festive season, where inspectors are needed most. Here are Stephen le Grange and Judy Coleman from Table View with their dogs, Breeze and Light.

VACANCY BULLETIN

No Christmas Boxes for staff The City of Cape Town has made it clear that solicitation of Christmas donations by municipal staff is forbidden. Any contributions are purely voluntary. “The City of Cape Town would like to advise residents that the solid waste management department enforces a policy which strictly forbids its personnel from asking residents for ‘Christmas boxes’ and soliciting any donations. Staff have been reminded that this practice is prohibited. “If, however, residents believe that excellent service has been provided, they are of course at liberty to give a voluntary donation to staff as a gesture of thanks and goodwill, but under no circumstances should they be approached and asked for money.

“City staff are appropriately remunerated. It would be appreciated if residents could report any incidents of intimidation by City staff to the call centre on 0860 103 089 during office hours. Apart from the date, time, and place, a vehicle registration number should be provided so that the culprits can be identified. Such reports will be investigated immediately and, where residents are willing to testify, the City will be able to take disciplinary action against the offenders,” says the City’s mayco member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg. Refuse collection services will remain unchanged during the festive period, even on public holidays.

Upset over pic Op die regte tyd sal of starving pup regte dinge gebeur As an avid animal lover, the photograph of the starving puppy sickened me for several reasons (Lewenskiekie, 3 December). The caption reads “Ek soek net kos” and further on “babahondjie kyk net anderpad”. This was all happening while police were looking for perpetrators “in ’n misdaad operasie”. Whoever owns this dog – if anyone – is a criminal. I cannot, for the life of me, think why you would publish something like this. To what end? If your photographer was so touched by this puppy’s plight – take it to the SPCA and then rather publish a before and after picture when it has been taken care of, rehabilitated and put in a home where people will give it the love it so obviously needs. Take R50 out of your wallet if have to. The only reason this puppy is standing so still and “posing” for the photographer is because the poor thing has nowhere to run. As an animal lover, I am of the conviction that animals and humans all have rights. Human babies depend on their parents, young puppies depend on the people who own them. And this picture had the same effect on me as if you had published a picture of a newborn baby dumped in a rubbish bin. No regard. PIER HEMY Table View TygerBurger’s photographer is a huge animal lover and she managed to find the puppy in the photograph a loving home. Unfortunately this is an everyday sight in many of the city’s poorer areas and organisations such as the AACL have an uphill battle to finance the sterilisation of these stray dogs. – Ed.

CORRIE LAUBSCHER Suid-Kaap

God, not guns, will keep us protected I would like to respond to the recent letters about guns by P. van Wyk and Charl van Wyk. Both claim more guns in the hands of “good” people will limit crime, which is of course

a myth. I follow their tirade in most newspapers. Both are also pro-death penalty activists. It seems their whole outlook on life is one of anger, hatred and vengeance. Charl was the guy who had his gun in the St James Church massacre in 1993 claiming the lives of 11 people. He claims his little gun prevented a bigger disaster, but most of us believe it was only the hand of God. Those evil folks had bigger guns and even hand grenades. I once read that Charl propagates the fallacy that because Simon Peter carried a sword, the weapon of Biblical times, we must all also carry guns to protect us. But most of us believe our Master taught us to put our sword away because “those who live by the sword will die by the sword”. If we look at the misery and devastation guns are causing all over the globe, no sane person will instigate more fear into societies by telling us all to carry guns. It is wholly unrealistic and dangerous. If God cannot protect us, what can? Guns? Anyone that supports the death penalty and violence is himself a potential murderer. KOERT MEYER Welgelegen

Thank you for helping us on N1 My daughter and I wish to thank the kind people who stopped and offered help to us when our car broke down on the N1 on Wednesday 10 December. We were in a blue Ford Fiesta on the N1, near Brackenfell, at about 10:30 travelling towards Bellville. Weer eens, baie dankie. RUTH O’C Kraaifontein

Township feel “I think at the heart of it, I’m really a folk musician, but I happen to come from South Africa.” When asked where his ideas about mixing cultural references come from, Donovan simply points to heart. “When I started to play guitar, sometimes the things I played just sounded sort of township-style and that’s what I felt.” He says his music and his band came from an exploration on what it felt like “to be me”. His new album is a continuation of that exploration. Donovan will be releasing Songoma (sic) at Kirstenbosch on Sunday 28 December. “I think it’s a real stamp of the sound that I’ve developed or explored with the last three albums.” The album name comes from a conversation Donovan had with a stranger one day. He was looking for a word that would describe who he is, what he does and his life’s purpose. He was giving an African woman a lift and she pointed out that the beads on his wrist are often worn by sangomas or natural healers. He felt like he could relate. “Songs sort of come from an invisible place, so where is it that you go to collect a song?” For Donovan, there’s a transformative aspect to writing music so he said: “I guess you can call me a songoma.”

ot Water frontman Donovan Copley wafts into the WP Media office like a fresh of breath air. His calming presence is violently juxtaposed to his vibrant outfit or “colour gemors” as he calls it, but then, the Cape Town singer says he loves colours, and more specifically, loves mixing them. “I like to mix musical genres and colours,” says Donovan. He is also passionate about South African rhythms and loves finding crossover points. Think Ghoema meets Sakkie and you’re on the right track. The rest of his band reflects this perfectly. While members change, they always come from very different music genres. Readers may be familiar with Hot Water’s single, “Wamkelekile”, which was used in the American Film Blended, and is currently enjoying high rotation on local radio stations, but a quick listen to one of his albums will show that there’s much more to Donovan’s music.

Donovan Copley of Hot Water is excited to share his new album, Songoma. He describes his “hybrid” word as fun and cheeky, which perfectly encapsulates his music. From a production side, he says he’s also taken a step forward, working with two producers, including Aron Turest-Swartz, a founding member of Freshlyground. “Aron really got, and gets what it is I’m doing.” He recorded at Monte Bello Studio and says working with producers gave him the space to focus on the delivering the music. “I think it’s distilled Hot Water,” Donovan says of the new album. He says the concert at Kirstenbosch will also reflect that.

Founding venue Fans will be able to hear old favourites like “Bush Fire” alongside songs from the new album, including an Afrikaans song, “Voortrekker”. “We’re going to have fun, that’s all I can guarantee,” he says. Donovan says he loves Kirstenbosch. He launched his first album, Home, at the venue in 2006 and he’s played three shows there since. “Kirstenbosch is very close to my heart and was really part of almost founding what I do.” Hot Water will be playing at Kirstenbosch as part of the Summer Sunset concert series. They saw that my hand was basically off and used cardboard from the bushes to put around my arm and hand. Then a doctor stopped at the scene in a private vehicle. A lady also appeared from nowhere and wrapped her scarf around my wrist,” Rory recalls. He remembers waking up in the hospital, with his hand “wired back on” and being able to move his fingers. Since he was a child, Rory was interested in the art of magic and inventions. He performed tricks from the age of five and after completing his studies, he worked as an entertainer on a floating casino. Then he joined the Brian Boswell roadshow as, amongst other things, a flying trapeze artist and stunt man. He does not boast about gadgets he invents, but shared the Gadget Mobile’s selfstarter with TygerBurger. After the van is unlocked with the remote, Rory says: “Start!”, and the engine switches on. Once ordered to “Switch off!”, the engine cuts out. The secret, he says, is a little Asian technology and a little Inspector Gadget magic.

SPORT

Old football players help one another out STEHAN SCHOEMAN

T

he Danny Abrahams Ex Footballers Fund is the birth of a project aiming to assist old players who are in dire need of financial assistance. Ivan Jack (Elsies River) and Douglas Karelse (Kraaifontein) are the masterminds behind the fund and are trying to relieve some pressure off their former teammates. Jack played for Elsies River from 1970 to 1992 and Douglas played professional soccer for Cape Town Spurs from 1970 to 1988. “We applied to register the fund as a NPC (non-profit company) some four months ago and we got the greenlight last week. This will really help us in our cause to approach companies and individuals to sponsor us in any way they see fit,” said Jack. Former Cape Town Spurs star Danny Abrahams was the initial spur for the fund. Abrahams, who struggles financially and has Alzheimers, has benefited greatly from his friends. “It’s difficult to see how your former teammate struggles. Dougie and I said we can’t just sit back and watch him and other players struggle the way they do. We felt the urge to jump in and help,” Jack says. “It’s a great feeling, helping them in whatever way we can. Every now and then we will host a dance and raise a bit of money for these chaps. We are hoping to get some sponsors in the new year to assist us in bettering their lives. “Having said that, we are very positive we can get some sponsors on board, there is some interest from companies and individuals wanting to get involved but we had to wait to get registered as a NPC. Now that we have the papers, it is all systems go. We will also

TYGERBURGER Milnerton 19

The fund committee will also have a monthly meeting and see who they can assist in that given month. “Sometimes we will just go and have a cup of tea and chat about the good old days. It is truly heart warming to help these guys and see how thankful they are. This is why we do what we do. To be there for our friends and help make life just a little bit better one good deed at a time,” said Karelse. VANDALISM: LACK OF SECURITY GUARDS SEES MUNICIPAL FACILITIES BEING STRIPPED

Sport clubs besieged TASMIN CUPIDO @tazzcup

S

ports facilities across the Cape are falling prey to the acts of brazen vandals and thieves. A total of 55 sports complexes were vandalised and burgled between April and November. A staggering 217 incidents were reported during this period, the city confirms. Sports clubs and facility management committees are calling on the city to step up security, as they fear the continuous criminal activities may stifle or end operations at the organisations and facilities. Bennet Bailey, chairperson of the Rygate Local Football Association (LFA) which calls Johnson Road Sports Complex in Rylands its home, says vandals stripped the facility in the first week of October – only a couple of weeks after the end of the football season. He claims the damage amounts to R200 000, a cost they cannot cover. “The interior of the clubhouse was stripped bare. All the cabling and wiring was removed. The wiring of the floodlights was also removed and the electricity box removed and damaged,” Bailey says. Similarly, chairperson of the Metropolitan LFA, Wayne Weitz, says the Metropolitan Sports Complex in Bonteheuwel was hit

at the end of October. The facility was stripped to resemble a shell and the organisation had to replace the trophies and medals for its annual prizegiving days before the event. “Everything was fine during the season, except for the odd burglary, but when the season ended and there was less activity at the facility, the criminals pounced. “The MFMC is constantly reminded that it is not the owner of the facility, but only the custodians. Yet the owner, the city, doesn’t take responsibility for its assets.” In local sporting circles, Weitz adds, there has been talk of several facilities being vandalised over the last couple of months. “There was a time when security guards were placed at the facility, but they informed us their contract had come to an end and that was the end of security,” he explains. “The city spends millions upgrading and maintaining facilities, so I believe they should protect it or the work will be useless.” TygerBurger has reported on incidents at the Wesbank Sports Complex, Durbanville Sports Complex and Ruyterwacht Sports

Complex, while its sister publication City Vision reported on incidents at the Gugulethu and Philippi swimming pools. Furthermore, it’s other sister publication, People’s Post has reported on burglary and vandalism at several sports facilities across the peninsula over the last couple of months. These include the Stephan Reagan, Rocklands and Strandfontein sports complexes, and Swartklip Indoor Sports Centre in Mitchell’s Plain, the Hoosain Parker Sports Complex in Parkwood and the Johnson Road Sports Complex. Burglary and vandalism were also reported at clubhouses at Kraaifontein Sports Complex. Despite the number of incidents, the city says it cannot provide continuous security presence. Mayco member for community services and special projects, Belinda Walker, says a “limited budget” of R36m was allocated for security in the department budget. “The department has had to rationalise the use of security personnel at some of its facilities to remain within the allocated

budget in the current financial year,” she says. “The department manages a large number of public facilities across the city and has identified hotspots where facilities are particularly vulnerable to theft and vandalism – security personnel will be present at these facilities. It is closely monitoring these facilities to find the most effective and financially sustainable options for securing them.” But security guards aren’t the only option, Walker adds, as the city has invested considerably in fences and alarms. It is also working to create partnerships with community organisations such as neighbourhood watches to help deter theft and vandalism. The city has spent R4,8m on repairs and replacements at facilities which have fallen victim to theft and vandalism, Walker says. “This is money that could have been put to better use to either upgrade these facilities or provide additional facilities in areas where there are limited or no sport and recreation facilities,” she says. “Now, more than ever, we need our communities to work with us and take ownership of their recreational spaces. We urge residents to report any suspicious behaviour immediately.” V Report incidents anonymously on the toll-free number 0800 225 669.

Die strand-kontrolepunte is by Nature’s Valley, The Waves, Brenton-on-Sea, Swartvlei, Wildernis, Glentana, Grootbrakrivier en Kleinbrakrivier. Dag twee se skof is 86 km. Die tradisionele aandresies vind vanjaar by

Struisbaai plaas.
