OPEN FIRE: CITY INVESTIGATES AFTER BOY BURNS TO DEATH

Land owners warned ASTRID FEBRUARIE @astridfebruarie

T

he City of Cape Town is engaging with the owners of a vacant property in Delft where two-year-old Lulo Patekile burnt to death after he allegedly fell into an unattended fire. According to ward councillor Michelle Adonis, land owners are being engaged with regard to the safety and environmental risk of the vacant property.

“We are also assisting the family in terms of the burial arrangements and providing them with counselling,” she says. Little Lulo lost his life on Tuesday 7 February. It is alleged that an unknown adult started a fire in a hole and left it unattended. According to Delft police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Brian Daniels, Lulo and two of his friends were playing near the hole where the fire was burning and he lost his balance and fell into the hole. “He sustained multiple burn wounds and

succumbed to his injuries,” he says. Daniels says the fire was left unattended while a group of children were playing in the same field. He said the City’s Fire and Rescue personnel tried in vain to resuscitate the boy after bringing the fire under control, but to no avail. A man who lives a few metres from the scene spoke to TygerBurger on condition of anonymity and said he had seen the children earlier and asked them not to play there. “The field is a dump site and very danger-

ous, which is why I asked them to go home and play there, but they never did. I later asked my daughter to go to the shop for me and on her way there she ran back home and told me that one of the children had fallen into the fire. I am devastated that this happened and cannot imagine what his parents must be going through.” . Anyone with more information is urged to contact the police on 021 954 9085/91.
