BLIKKIESDORP: SHOOTING LEADS TO FURTHER VIOLENCE
Fearing for their lives
GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz
A
cellphone robbery led to the death of a man in Blikkiesdorp on Sunday and now tensions are running high with threats of further violence. The incident occurred at about 17:00 when two men went to an area in Blikkiesdorp to confront a group about a robbery that occurred the previous day. When this group was confronted about a cellphone that was stolen, a scuffle ensued between the accused and accuser – one allegedly a Young Gifted Bastards and the other an Oka Boys member. During this fight a firearm was drawn and
shots fired. In the aftermath 27-year-old Ryan Felkers was shot in his chest and he subsequently died at the Delft Day Hospital. This shooting then led to three more houses in the area being attacked where people were assaulted, goods stolen and residents threatened. Now people in the area are fearing for their lives and the tension in Blikkiesdorp is quite volatile. Police are investigating a charge of murder, three of malicious damage to property and theft. No arrests have been made. Authorities met with Blikkiesdorp community leaders behind closed doors in their effort to find strategies and interventions to
deal with these concerns and the threat. The law enforcement agencies are dealing with the issue and according to police a 42year-old-man was arrested on the murder charge. A resident from the area who did not want to be named confirmed that since the shooting people have been very scared. “It feels like a war-zone because we are scared,” he says. “There have been a number of small robberies that have taken place and sometimes the victims know their attackers. That’s when the problems start because they approach family and friends to take the law into their own hands. “It becomes a bigger problem when gangs
start getting involved because they associate homes in areas surrounding the culprits and start attacking them for no reason.” Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, station commander at Delft stressed the need for calm in the area. “We want to ensure the people in that area that we will be increasing our presence there,” he said. “It is also important for people to remember that they must not take the law into their own hands. “In circumstances where they recognise their attackers they must report it to the police and we will take action. If they take the law into their own hands they will also be prosecuted.”
